It was getting late on a Tuesday evening (when many restaurants in Venice close) and this place was open so we popped in. The decor is a blend of modern and cliché, but the place was clean and the staff friendly. My friend ordered the veal liver and another friend ordered the seafood pasta. I ordered the black squid ink pasta. My two friends loved their meals and I'd rate mine well too -- but in honesty, the squid ink pasta at Tratorria Zaccaria next door was better in my opinion. We arrived later in the day here in Venice after driving from garmisch Germany. And let me tell you we were HANGRY! We finally found parking and figured out the water buses and we finally arrived on to the main island close to San Marco plaza. My husband and I decided to head down an alley way, and I was too hungry to go hunting for a place to eat. Saw this little gem on the corner and I sat down! Buying drinks .... like a small soda can ... cost 7€ the smallllllll one but once we moved past that price we finally decided we'd share a pizza and find another place to eat! I literally closed my eyes and pointed at the menu and that's what we got!! Not going to lie the pizza was amazing! I want to say it's a type of ham on it. But the cheeese!! And that thin crust!! We stopped for lunch while walking through Venice. Our order included meat plate, 2 pizzas, a pasta dish, and drinks. Note that you do not get the free spritzer when you check in with Yelp. One of the pizzas was incorrect so we had to wait for the entire order to arrive. There was no bread served with the meat plate so I wouldn't recommend this appetizers. The pasta was good and the pizzas were fine. The reason for only 3 stars has to do with service. I tried smiling at our server, we didn't complain about the food mixup, so I cannot explain the why our server was t pleasant. There are many cafes in Venice to choose from so I'm torn about recommending this location. read more

We stumbled upon this delicious place by accident while walking through Venice after our gondola ride. ATMOSPHERE: Quaint and romantic. We sat in the patio area which over looks a regular street. No view of the canals, but if there's outdoor seating, we'll take it! FOOD: Spaghetti bolognese - THE BEST I've had. Full of flavor and the pasta cooked al dente. Mix that with being in Venice, and I was in heaven! Artichoke mushroom & ham pizza - Do they do bad pizza anywhere in Italy? Thin and chewy crust with fresh toppings. And, the being in Venice thing... DESSERT: I have no idea what its called but it was a pink & white whipped (mousse?) dessert that was not overly sweet but perfect. Topped with frozen raspberries and cherries. The second dessert was some sort of tiramisu. Light, chocolatey, creamy, and delicious. SERVICE: Pretty friendly. Food came out quickly though I'm never in a rush to get my food because I love to have one or two cocktails before eating. OVERALL: Great food, average prices but no view. read more

This was the last restaurant we ate in Italy. Food was absolutely delish. The squid ink pasta was cooked perfectly and squid was tender. The mussels were the star of the evening. The white wine sauce was so yummy, I could drink it like soup. The mussels was amazingly soft and just melted in my mouth. Spaghetti and meatballs were good. Turbot fish and clams were ok; nothing really special. I liked the artichoke over the spinach. I would come back if ever in Venice. read more

We arrived off the ferry in the afternoon not having had breakfast and we were pretty starving. I try and avoid ristorantes along the main paths so we wandered down an alley and stumbled across San Provolo. My wife was in search of Spaghetti with Squid Ink and sure enough they had it. Walked in and were quickly greeted and sat. Decent music in the background and not overcrowded, the atmosphere was quite pleasant. Anyways, bottom line my wife loved the spaghetti with squid ink and I had the spaghetti with clams and mussels and omg it was so good as well. So good in fact I used the rolls given to us to sop up every last bit of olive oil, garlic, and sauce out of my plate. Phenomenal food, good service, will be coming back again before we leave. read more

I happened onto the restaurant using Yelp. It was located very close to our hotel and several other restaurants in a touristy area of Venice. We sat inside and enjoyed the very good air conditioning, which was this restaurant's only redeeming quality. We started with a caprese salad and ham with melon. For our main courses, I had the lobster pasta, my wife had the shrimp cocktail, and my daughter had the prawns. The pasta was mediocre at best. The cocktail and prawns were horrible. Worst of all was the service. They brought out a sorry excuse for a bread basket and olive oil for dipping but we didn't have bread plates. My wife asked for plates but the waiter either blew her off or didn't understand her. Also, the food was way over priced. This was our first meal in Venice. I had the spaghetti bolognese. To my taste it was somewhat bland and slightly odd tasting. Perhaps it was a bit too tangy in comparison to the overall flavor. The table bread served before the meal was two wrapped packages of 3 thin breadsticks and a couple of small pieces of cheap bread. I was amused by the ambiance and have included 3 photos: 1. A glowing LED ice bucket at another table (also shows my breadsticks and bread). 2. A model sailboat with a crucifixion sail. 3. The sugar packets on the table all had bizarre "Keep Calm and ______" slogans. The service was slow and not particularly friendly. The bottom line: I feel 3 stars is giving the benefit of the doubt. We arrived late in Venice, hungry, and were staying at the Hotel Fontana on Campo San Provolo. We were too tired to hunt for the "perfect" restaurant and settled on this instead, although we worried that it might be touristy and overpriced. Wow, were we wrong. A week later, having traveled across Italy, we're still comparing other meals to what we ate at Ristorante San Provolo. My husband's spaghetti with clams had some kind of mild pepper kick to it that we just couldn't get enough of. My daughter in law ordered gnocchi with gorgonzola that was pillowy-light and yet rich and flavorful. My spinach and ricotta cannoli was the weakest item we'd ordered, yet it was still delicious. We shared an order of steamed artichokes that left us swooning, they were so delicious. When we finished we got a pizza Margherita to take back to our son, who'd crashed out in the hotel, and he says that was one of the best pizzas he'd had on the whole trip. Service was polite and friendly, and prices were about average. Later in our Venice stay, we dined at critically-acclaimed Osteria da Carla and Trattoria La Rivetta, and I honestly don't think the food at either of those places was better than this. read more

The food was OK. We ordered the spaghetti with meat ball, and rigatoni with mixed seafood. To me the spaghetti was cooked too firm and I would like it softer. Also, they tastes a bit too salty. However, the veil liver with onions definitely is delicious and a pleasant surprise. Highly recommend. If I only ordered this, I would give them a higher rating. The service was OK, but we had a senior waiter who never smiled. Plus they charge 12% service fee plus 4 euro cuperto. read more

We arrived at San Provolo around 14hr for drinks and lunch and was our first meal in Venice. Upon arrival the waitstaff was not very accommodating with showing us the menu's or what the different specials that they had to offer were. He was very dry and was not prompt to take drink orders or see what our needs were after being seated. Upon ordering, we decided to go with one of the fixed menus for 23,30 and explained that myself and my husband would be sharing a plate. Our waiter seemed to be irritated at this fact and continued to ask what else we would be ordering. He took our order after again explaining that we would be sharing and huffed as he walked away since we did not have a second order to be placed. Every aspect of our service was excruciatingly slow and asking for a second drink was near impossible. Now for the food portion of this review... We ordered the Spaghetti with clams, Sea bass with potatoes, and the lemon sorbet. Upon delivery of our food, we had requested an additional plate since we were sharing - that never came upon multiple requests. The spaghetti with clams was nothing special and I was taken aback that the clams did not arrive in their shell with the spaghetti. The clams did not taste fresh and almost seemed as if they were canned clams that were used instead of fresh. The pasta was mediocre at best and the sauce honestly tasted the same as jarred pasta sauce. Our next dish was the sea bass that was served in a white, salty gravy with potatoes and a few tomatoes with capers. This too was nothing special.... the sea bass did not taste fresh and the dish was more so bland than anything. The best part of our meal was the lemon sorbet that was served at the end. We did enjoy two spritzers while here but again ordering a second drink was near impossible when the waitstaff did not return to check on us. We had to ask our waiter for our check and then again another waiter for our check when our waiter never returned. It was like pulling teeth to get our check to leave. Hopefully our restaurant experience will be better than this one going forward while in Venice! read more

As with most restaurants, here you get what you expect: foods, liquids, cutlery, napkins, tables, etc. These are what connoisseurs and critics alike dub "the essentials." In addition to these staples, however, my experience at San Provolo involved a critical nonessential, henceforth referred to as "THE X," which made my sojourn there if not a pleasure cruise, something only slightly worse than a pleasure cruise: a mostly but not entirely pleasurable cruise. THE X took the form of what I like to call a fern (or bushlet or veggie veggie greenie, my lexical preference fluctuating wildly with my ever worsening and capricious moods).
