We came here looking for some less touristy Venetian food. They were full inside for lunch on a weekday in October but were able to set up a table for us outside along with some other tables. They started with an amuse of polpette of tuna. I got a Spritz Artigianale with Select (Select over Aperol in Venice..) Starters: - Local razor clams: much smaller than we've had elsewhere but super flavorful and so great - Carpaccio of local fish: sea bass, tuna, swordfish, and shrimp - all very fresh, with olive oil and salt. It came with a wasabi sauce and a tartar type of sauce, but we liked the simple, plain preparation - Spaghetti with shrimp and prawns alla busara: with an uni like sauce on top, rich and good in texture - Fettuccine: fresh pasta with spider crab sauce Service was friendly, and the outside setting was actually really nice because it was a quiet area - nice as a more relaxing lunch stop just far enough away from the Rialto Market. read more

A relative recommended Antiche Carampane, which was close to my Airbnb. I usually feel so off reviewing places I don't get to fully experience that I don't do write the reviews. But when -the restaurant has 2 tables for 2 in its outside seating area available and possibly more inside on a rainy evening (but you didn't get to go inside to check), -you ask the host if you can have dinner and she says yes, you may, and one moment, -she brings a middle aged or older man out, -he visibly assesses you by looking you up and down, -you're in a black hat and a black parka because it's raining and sandals because your other shoes are out of commission (wet city) and you couldn't fit waterproof boots in your carry-on luggage, -he says no, they can't seat you, and doesn't say it is due to other reservations or a dress code, -you take comfort in that you'll later have the opportunity to share that with other customers on Yelp I assume I was discriminated against due to my foot attire, but it was possibly because I am a solo diner, as that type of discrimination is apparently also a thing in Italy. Anyway, I found another restaurant around the corner. It was fine. Antiche Carampane most likely has significantly better food. After we ordered, they brought out fried fish balls. As an appetizer, we had the seasonal autumn octopus (my favorite part of the meal). We split the shrimp scampi pasta (great) and a plate of fried daily fish (just good). Antiche Carampane is a neighborhood restaurant in the San Palo district of Venice that regularly gets high reviews that are unwarranted. The restaurant is casual and very small with too many tables for the space so that everyone is jammed up against each other. The ambiance is cold and the restaurant loud. Our food (which barely fit on the tiny table we were at) was mediocre at best, and served cold. For starters, we had octopus and a salad with shrimp (that was unappetizing as the heads were still attached and it was overpoweringly "fishy") followed by paccheri pasta in a ragu sauce and Spaghetti Vongole that was unnaturally green in color and flavorless. The wine was recommended by the owner and was too sweet with a high alcohol content and was a bad pairing. All in all a very disappointing experience. With the many fabulous restaurants in Venice, this one is not recommended. read more

Antiche Carampane was one of my favorite restaurants from our entire Italy trip. Spectacular service and food, with an intimate atmosphere. We asked our server for recommendations and she basically said everything. After we ordered, they delivered a fried zucchini appetizer to our table, on the house. We ordered the seafood carpaccio and it was keyboard-smash-worthy levels of amazing. The shrimp/prawns and crawfish were spectacular. It took a really long time for the main course to come out (over 35 mins between the appetizer and main course). We also got the polenta with cuttlefish, which we found a little plain despite the cuttlefish boasting such bold flavors! The spaghettini with tomato sauce came out perfectly al dente. I found it a little spicy but Steven completely disagreed. The sauce and flavoring stuck neatly to each strand of pasta. The seafood was incorporated so well, probably the best I've ever had. It just tasted well-balanced. Tomatoes worked perfectly in this dish, small enough to provide tiny bursts of acidity. We got their dessert of the day, a pistachio crumble with grilled peach and vanilla ice cream, raspberry, and mint. What a great combination. They're so good at balancing flavors. It was sweet enough to notice its presence but not enough to overwhelm you. I wouldn't expect these to work well together, but they did so magnificently. read more

Two easy rules to eat in Venice by are; 1. If someone is outside the restaurant asking you to come in, keep walking 2. This was the best food we ate in Venice and that is not an easy feat! I would go back to Venice to eat here again. An absolute must try and get to eat here if you are in Venice. This is a family run business and I think a local favourite judging by the packed reservations list and the queue around the block to eat here. This restaurant features on a Rick Stein cooking programme where the son, now running it, cooked clam linguine for Rick which looked mouth-wateringly good. They were very welcoming but almost fully booked. I was lucky enough to get seats outside on a Saturday night without a reservation; we just popped somewhere else for an aperitif and came back. We were facing a stone wall in a small alleyway, not picturesque but the food is incredible. The Prosecco I wanted was finished so we were recommended a fantastic bottle of Zamuner 2008 for the same price. For starter we had crab meat and asparagus which was phenomenal. I had the ragu and my husband had squid ink linguine with baby octopus. Both were soooo flavoursome and fantastic. This is real Venetian food the sign even says "no pizza, no lasagna". We decided we'd have a dessert and when I asked about tiramisu the waitress we had a good rapport with by now said "...come on! Don't have the tiramisu!" with a grin. So we asked for her recommendation and had two excellent desserts. The owner seemed humble and almost embarrassed when I mentioned his time on TV. There were chefs also seated outside who were also loving the food and asked to buy the papa a drink - apparently his job is "taste-tester" these days and their was good humour and warmth between them which added to our night. read more

We dined at Antiche Carampane on Tuesday, May 9 as it was recommended by our tour guide. We had made reservations months before, and glad we did. The restaurant was very busy and we would not have been able to get a table. The restaurant was a short walk from the Rialto Bridge off of Rio Terá De La Carampane, about 15 minutes from our apartment. Although small, there was seating both inside and outside on the street. Our meal consisted of 2 salads, an appetizer and 2 entrees. We also enjoyed a wonderful red wine from Northern Italy. The seafood entrees were fresh and delicious. The salad and appetizers were very tasty. Although our server was not fluent in English, we navigated through the menu with her and she was great. Our entire meal and experience was wonderful and we will make reservations to eat there again. read more

Definitely in the top two of the eateries we've been to in Venice. Firstly, we'd wandered in without realizing this was *the* famed and popular restaurant in Venice. We had read up on the best places in the area, and I remembered this place in particular as somewhere potentially highly desirable and worth spending a while trying to get a reservation at - but somehow we didn't make the connection when we walked in the first night. At the time, we were only looking for a nearby, well-reviewed place to grab some grub. Realizing it now, it seems rather funny. Unsurprisingly we weren't able to get a table that night, but the staff was very pleasant and welcoming about our unwitting entry, generously allowing us to make a reservation for the following night. The following night, we were promptly seated and served some of the best seafood dishes we've had in a while. We enjoyed the carpaccio, tagliolini with spider crab, and cuttlefish. In a few words, the dishes may be described as bold, with strong flavours well complemented by good texture and mouthfeel. For dessert, we ordered a sweet and creamy pavlova (served mixed in a cup and dusted saucer, rather than the traditional style of fruit and sauce over a bed of meringue). Definitely more expensive, but not forbiddingly so. Would happily return if we had the chance. If you're trying to get a reservation in person here, make sure your name is written in the book! The names get copied onto a sheet of paper that dictates who gets to dine there when it opens that night, if it is full (and there's a good chance it will be, seeing as we went in the off-season and were still unable to manage a walk-in on the first try). Since we went here one of the first few nights in Venice, I hadn't yet picked up sufficient Italian to even properly greet, thank and say goodbye in the local language at the time. Wonderful place, highly rated, and the only Venice restaurant we booked before arriving, based on their reputation for Venetian food. Excellent choice, with reservations essential, and lots of time needed to find this isolated restaurant near San Polo. Google Map was of minimal help. We wandered, backtracked, considered trying to walk on water as the Google map suggested, and finally made it to the front door fashionable late. Great service, great atmosphere, and great food - worth the effort. They have a huge wine list, which was fun to browse. We shared a tagliolini pasta with crab sauce. Very nice, and a half serving each was plenty as a starter. For my main course I had John Dory. It's listed on many menus in Venice. I decided to try it, since in America and Australia its one of my favorite fishes. It was cooked perfect, soft and moist, but it just isn't as good as what they bring out of the fresh waters of the Pacific. No room for dessert. Is this the absolutely-must-go-to restaurant in Venice? No. But it's top notch, with authentic Venetian food in a delightful authentic setting. The locals seem to have no problem finding it, and keeping the tables filled. read more

I have been to Venice twice, my parents 4 times, and my grandfather 30 times :) ! We all agree that this is the best restaurant in Venice. First of all, it's not in a touristy neighborhood and there are a lot of locals & Italians eating here, which is always a good sign. Second of all, the food is amazing! They have terrific fresh fish every day and their pasta is super tasty as well. I highly recommend the soft shell crab to start (if it's in season) and the fish of the day if you're in the mood for fish, if not, either the spaghetti vongole or the spider crab tagliolini. Last but not least, the service is impeccable. The waiters are knowledgeable, kind, and respectful. We go twice every time we come. You can't go wrong with a meal at Antiche Carampane!! read more

I was in Italy on business and flew my wife out from New York for a romantic weekend in Venice. We went the first weekend in March. My wife had made a reservation in late January. for dinner on March 3, 2017, which was confirmed. The reservation details were quite specific as they had pushed us up earlier from what we requested because of their seating times. Our hotel is closer to the train station and we traipsed through the rain for 40 minutes to get here. Once we arrived, we were told by the man at the desk with the reservation book that we did not have a reservation. We clearly explained we made a reservation and recounted the details. The man grew beligerent and kept pointing to the book that it wasn't written down so we don't have one. Finally I had to ask him if he was perfect and never made a mistake and he said of course he wasn't perfect and could have made a mistake but there was nothing he could do to seat us as people kept strolling in after us to be seated. He told us to come back tomorrow. I told him we had other reservations (where we left a deposit) and could not. After insisting we come back tomorrow, I told him that wasn't a workable solution and he continued to get louder and was screaming at this point. I politely informed him that this was unacceptable and I would leave a review reflecting this. He told me it wasn't fair since he was giving us solutions (come back another time when we couldn't). We finally had to call our hotel who squeezed us into the last table of a lovely establishment across town that prioritized our food since I had a business call that evening. Another 40 minute walk back. I am not sure how the food is here but I will tell you the staff is rude and belligerent. I recommend you spend your money at another restaurant. read more

I made a reservation on January 24th, 2017 for dinner on March 3, 2017, which was confirmed. I specifically remember the details of the reservation as 1) the restaurant was closed for vacation through Jan 23, so I waited until the 24th and 2) I asked for an 8pm reservation and was told the first seating starts at 7:30. So I had a 7:30 reservation for March 3. When my husband and I arrived at 7:25, we were told we did not have a reservation. We explained that we did and asked if it was possible someone at the restaurant made a mistake. The manager became irate and started screaming that anytime someone makes a reservation, it's immediately written in the book and if someone made a mistake, it was us. He just kept screaming at us, so loudly that patrons that were already seated started to stare at us. We confirmed this reservation through our hotel, so we called the hotel to see if they could help. The hotel called the restaurant and reiterated that they had notes in their system about the reservation. The manager of the restaurant hung up on the hotel and continued screaming at us, saying that it's not his problem and if we wanted to stay there and wait until 9:30pm, he would try to get us a table during the second seating. We explained that we could not wait (my husband had a conference call at 9pm) and again asked him to find a way to seat us for our reservation. We explained that we were looking forward to eating at this restaurant because we read it was favored by locals and had great food. He responded that there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, that his was not one of the best in Venice, and that we should leave. So we left and found a table elsewhere and had a great meal. I would not recommend you spend any of your money in a place that shows such disregard and contempt for its customers. There was no reason for the manager to become so irate or rude to the point of being intimidating. The Real Deal. Enjoyed a lovely dinner here tonight. Was looking for a non-touristy authentic Venetian restaurant and we found it. Had grilled razor clams and a mozzarella salad to start, the clams were the best seafood we had...ever. We both had a pasta course: Tagliatelle with scallops and pesto, and spaghetti with clams and again every detail was perfect. On to a cheese course and a lemon tart for dessert and BOOM it was fantastic. Highly recommend, but don't tell too many people :). An absolutely authentic Venetian restaurant located way off the beaten path. Only one other table of tourists. My Dad and I went for dinner and had a great amuse Bouche of tiny fried whole gamberetti. Then we had the mixed Venetian Frutti di Mare antipasti, followed by two pasta dishes (clans and linguini and baby squid over pasta with their ink in the sauce. We ended with a shared plate of fritti calamari and shrimp. The shrimp in this dish were the sweetest I have ever had. Order this dish - it is incredibly light and perfectly cooked. Excellent fresh seafood at slightly higher prices than surrounding restaurants but definitely worth it. Had the fresh catch of the day which was a whole monkfish and linguine with swordfish and deep fried fresh caught seafood. When you find this place it won't disappoint. Tucked away from the "traps." Hard to choose between an outdoor table viewing Venezia's pathways and people vs. indoors. Both welcome a sophisticated Italian experience of white linen tables. The staff are hospitable and know just enough English to guide you through. Wine: The Cabernet del veneto. Velvety full bodied in a 1/2 carrafe. The food: Start with the sautéed clams and mussels! So tender, no chewing required. We are still talking about it. Secondi: The tagliatelle, fresh pasta of just the right texture topped with ragu meat. Warm and hearty to your taste buds. I tried the cuttlefish (Venetian style) please confirm what cuttlefish is first! I misunderstood the server and got the very thing I was avoiding. Squid. Familiar with squid ink? Sometimes in a pasta? Well this is the squid, tentacles and all, cut in pieces served in its own ink. Fortunately, it was tender and prepared well enough for me to push through it. read more

Perfect! If one loves seafood, one will not find a finer seafood restaurant in Venice. Located next to the Rialto fish market is definitely an advantage. If you want authentic Venetian then this is the best. Always book and take a compass, it really is hard to find. We like to stop in Venice as the first stage of our Italian holidays and Antiche Carampane is a good reason to do so. You won't be disappointed unless you want a burger or fish'n chips.
