I spent a significant amount of time with San Clemente Woodworking settling on the design details and price for our staircase remodel, and I was encouraged by their apparent expertise, flexibility, and capabilities. But then came the payment schedule, where they were requiring 40% of the job to be paid up front, which is not permitted in California. I requested a payment schedule with the maximum allowed up front cost of $1000, and they sent another schedule. This one had the $1000 up front cost, but still wanted 40% of the job paid prior to ordering materials, which is also not permitted in California. So I sent them a proposed payment schedule which was aligned with California requirements and was similar to other quotes I had received. The curt response of "I'm not interested in someone creating a payment schedule" and "Please find someone else" was quite a surprise. Now I'm not sure whether they know they are in violation of California contractor law or if they just don't care, but they definitely have no intention of following it. Either way, I suggest taking their advice and finding someone else for your job, as I did. While I could thoroughly discredit the business owner's false excuse below by posting their actual texts, I won't spend any more of my time on them. I just feel very glad to have dodged this bullet. Walter did the majority of the stair installation and I kind of missed him after the stairs wrapped up. He had an excellent eye for details and would consult me if something didn't look quite right to make sure it would come out as I expected. We were having new LVP flooring and carpet installed in our home just 3 weeks ago, but we needed to find a company to redo our stairwell. When a huge job like this begins, one must consider the "order" of how projects are started and finished. The stairs had to be done first, because sanding of wood produces lots of dust. So the decision was made to call San Clemente Woodworking, all 5 star reviews on YELP. There wasn't anything wrong with our old staircase and spindles, other than they were "stuck in the 80's" and needed a refresh. Also, our home is a Spanish Mediterranean style of house, and wrought iron spindles is what it needed to look "right." We were referred to San Clemente Woodworking and Ed and Jake came right away to see our existing stairs. Ed was a treasure-trove of information and he was able to educate us on staircases. There is a lot to know about how a proper staircase needs to be built and how using natural wood is paramount if you want the staircase and railings to last a lifetime. We picked out a beautiful assortment of 3 wrought iron spindles, and we took extra time and effort to arrange them specifically in an artistic arrangement to make the most of their artful appearances. Pedro came first to remove the old, dark oak stain from the wood, then Uriel came to custom mix a lighter color stain to match the new flooring that we were having installed. It was a perfect match and we were to happy to see Pedro work very hard to put it together for us. The stripping and staining required 5 days of hard work and Pedro was faithful to us the entire time; starting early in the mornings and finishing at a reasonable hour in the midafternoon. Once Pedro finished, then Walter came to fit the spindles. He was very careful and very cautious to get the measurements of the spindles accurate before he sawed them into place. He was very considerate of our preferences and he asked many questions before making his cuts, which I appreciate very much! He got the job done, but we were short one spindle! Not to worry because Jake came in the next few days to install the missing one! In the end my husband and I are very pleased with the beautiful new staircase! It is stunning, it is excellent, and it's a real showstopper! We are so happy that we called San Clemente Woodworking, Ed and Jake. Call them if your stairs need repairs or an overhaul. At the consultation, I met with Joe who walked us through the process of remaking my two staircases. One staircase is curved and the other just straight. I had older styled stairs with the wooden spindles and built in carpeted runner. I wanted to update them to a contemporary look of wooden treads and simple metal spindles. San Clemente Woodworking did a fantastic job updating my 80's staircase -- from start to finish. After making a recommendation about the style, SCWW removed the old, outdated banister and wall-to-wall carpet, and replaced it with a beautiful updated banister with a new elegant curve, and white treads on the stairs (for a carpet runner). We also had an awful rough wood post that stood out like a sore thumb. We weren't sure what it should look like, but knew it just needed to be covered with wood. Ed suggested we leave it with him, and he transformed the post to the most amazing wood design. We could not have asked for something as nice.
