Use to go here 2-3 times a week for a few years. But I won't go back after this:: I ordered the same thing the table next to me ordered. It sounded good. I was alone for dinner that night. I got my food, took 3 bites and the waitress asked if everything was okay. It was but I didn't have beans on the plate so I asked about them. It was all rice. She apologized and i thought was going to take my plate to the kitchen when she took it from me but she took my plate and SERVED IT TO THE TABLE NEXT TO ME!! Server rule #1. Once a plate hits the table it can't go back to the kitchen, OR TO ANOTHER TABLE! I wouldn't want my food coming to me from someone else eating it! Gross. read more

Something terrible happened in the kitchen. Flavor remover was used on my chicken fajitas! We drove from salem for this meal...just like last time, but this meal was sub-par. The chips, no seasoning and a bit rancid. The salsa was okay. No refrioles with the chips. Many ice tea refills. Water tasted horrible. Just so disappointed. So many choices of mexican food in this area and san antonio is off the return list. read more

Iv had tamales , asada, chile verde, carnitas and a ground beef tostada. All were good except the Chile verde. The pork was not tender . I told the waitress and got zero response not a word . I left big chunks of meat on the plate due that reason. Well the tostada had way too much lettuce. Was more like a salad . read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant! I moved to Monmouth about a year and a half ago and was looking for a good Mexican restaurant when I tried San Antonio's. The food is so good and the staff is very friendly. I was so sad when they closed for a couple weeks due to coronavirus, but they're doing takeout orders now and put in a drive thru and I'm so glad! Their food is delicious and whenever I have friends or family in town, I take them to this restaurant. So good! So it can go without saying that food from this country is one of my favorites, and I'm always eager to try new restaurants that serve the area's fare. While San Antonio is a nice alternative from many of the other Mexican restaurants that the Monmouth-Independence area has to offer, I have to say that the food is just okay. The flautas and taquitos are awesome. But if you want something not fried.... You see, I'm a HUGE fan of mole. I get it at almost any Mexican restaurant that gives the option. I almost got it yesterday at San Antonio. But then I saw something that caught my eye. Enchiliadas con Pepian. WHAT?! Well, I mean, I'd only seen it spelled "pipian," but it's this delicious sauce made from chilis and pumpkin seeds. And it's really hard to make (and I've NEVER seen it on a US menu). Someone made it for me when I was in Mexico, and upon returning, I tried to duplicate the recipe, but it turned out horribly. So, very excitedly, I ordered the pipian. It came out. It was a green sauce. Bummer! I almost always prefer reds when it comes to Mexican sauces. I think it tasted fine, but for some reason, my enchilada tasted like there was a chicken broth in it. I don't think it was the chicken filling, but it could have been used as the pipian base. The beans are awesome, as is the complementary salsa. The regular margarita was a let-down, though; it seemed to be lime juice and ice. I could BARELY taste the tequila. Sadness. But definitely the place to go for deep-fried Mexican fare. read more

If you're looking look something consistently good in Independence, go to San Antonio! I've never had something that I didn't like and it is only made better by the manager (I think? He is the nice guy running around everywhere, helping everyone.) I've had a ton of things off the menu including: Fish taco w side of rice and beans - delish! Pollo ala diabla - spicy and good! Pollo ala creama- rich and yummy! Enchiladas are to die for! Basically... everything is good! Make sure you ask for spicy salsa for your chips! Super yummy and has a little more kick than their regular salsa. Also, complementary dessert! What?! So awesome. Love San Antonio's and will continue to visit. read more

My wife and I go here a couple of times a month. Unlike like the previous reviewer, I've had the Pepian sauce on multiple occasions and it has been great. I am half mexican... mom's side of family is mexican so if this place wasn't good I wouldn't come back. I would definitely recommend the carne asada, flautas, fish tacos, and puerco in pepian. Also, the deep fried ice cream and banana daquaries are good if you want something sweet. The service is also always great. Always on top of refills and the restaurant is always incredibly clean. read more

Ubiquitous chips and salsa - chips were fine, i.e. not great, not bad. Salsa - I like it mild and it was, but lots of flavor, very good. I ordered shredded beef flautas. Portion size was good and it looked great. Then I bit into it and was disappointed. Continued to eat and it didn't get any better. The meat was very tender and the portion was generous, the flautas were actually more like small burritos in size and had cheese as well as beef inside them. But they were incredibly bland. They looked so good, the beef looked like it was cooked with sauce or spices or something, yet there was just no flavor. Served with guacamole (good) and sour cream so I just kept drowning each bite in salsa and condiments but finally just gave up. read more

Disappointing. Nothing is spicy. Maybe they serve non-Hispanic customers differently? There's no spice in anything the salsa just tasted like pace and the fajitas almost tasted like they were covered in BBQ sauce. Very weird experience. There was nothing wrong with our visit to this restaurant. It was recommended by locals so we brought our party of six (two from the Midwest) to check it out. Service was attentive and friendly and there were a few authentic touches. The dining room was clean and attractive. And the food was good, but nothing more. We're from Salem, and we regularly meet friends from Monmouth at San Antonio's. The food never disappoints, and the wait-staff is top-notch. The owner, Moises, is charming and, if you regularly order the same dish, he'll remember and make certain it's as good as it was the last time, or even better. And, when we take picky grandchildren with us, their "special order" is filled exactly as specified---even when it's very strange. There is no specific dish we can recommend, because everything we've ever ordered was excellent, but the rellenos are my "benchmark" for Mexican restaurants and these are goo-o-o-d! read more

It was about 745pm when we showed up. Seated right away. There was a large group in the lobby and misc other tables of couples thru out the place. I thought to myself great lots of chips and dips and a long wait. Well yeah we received the chips and dip and we had questions about white sauce. Yummy pollo ale crema. Husband got that. I got white sauce chicken enchiladas. Kids got a quesadilla and a red sauce enchilada. More chips were brought out. Hot sauce was great. And food was brought out fast. Didn't matter if all the other people they were prompt bringing everyone their food their water and checking on everyone!!! First visit on our way back to south Salem. We have nothing but good things to say about San Antonio. We ordered - Pollo Ala Diabla, Enchiladas Zuisa and Chile Colorado. The consensus was we all had the best dish. I had the chile Colorado and it was fresh and definitely homemade - the sauce was not out of a can and It was full of flavor. Generally I don't eat the rice and beans and this time I ate all of it. Wow, big critic of others rice and beans, it was all good! The décor might be a bit outdated, cheap, or cheesy..... But the food is really fantastic. They don't "dumb down" the flavors to appease dull palates, yet the amount of heat is acceptable to anyone's taste. My personal favorites on the menu are the flautas (Thank GOD a restaurant in this area ACTUALLY UNDERSTANDS the difference between a flauta, and a taquito!!!!) Beyond that, the Carne Asada and Chile Colorado are wonderful as well. Tonight, I happened to order my all time favorite Mexican dish - Chicken Mole. I have to say, it held up to any I've ever had, and did not disappoint. The service is polite, quick, and gracious. All in all, I can't think of any reason not to come back over and over! read more
