I can't tell you about the food because we didn't get any. what we did get, was a whole lot oddness. We ordered The Carnitas plate, Chicken Enchiladas and Asada Taco, two waters and a D. Coke. A fairly young gal too our order, and she was very kind but seemed overwhelmed. 15 minutes after we ordered (still no water of Soda), she came to the table to ask what kind of meat we wanted with our Carnitas plate.... "uhhhh Carnitas please". She left and came back a good 5 minutes later and said they were out of Carnitas, so what else would we like to have with our Carnitas Plate? She said how about asada, so we went with it, and asked for our drinks again. 10 minutes later my husband went up to get our drinks and the gal said "we're starting your order right now". We were so confused, we'd been there at least 30 minutes at that point... We politely let them know we were going to go because we didn't have a lot of time. The young girls just said "ok" and that was that. It was a very strange experience. The reviews are good, and maybe she was just overwhelmed... but either way the poor girl need some help/support AND better training. read more

Super awesome surprise finding this hidden gem today while starving in Salem. We were passing though and I had a "I need to eat right now or I may get stabby" moment so I hopped on Yelp and this place popped up. It has positive reviews and when we walked in it was super clean so we decided to try it out! We were immediately greeted by two very nice young ladies who gave us a choice of socially distanced seats. After sitting it was less than 90 seconds until we had drinks and chips and salsa while we perused to menu. Settling on carne asada for myself and pollo el diabla for my husband we settled in to wait. Less than 10 minutes passed and we had piping hot delicious food. The carne asada was cooked perfectly and seasoned so well, you can tell this is a family recipe. The diabla was so hot my husband was sweating which was entertaining to see. The drinks were kept full and the service was very hospitable. We would 10/10 go again if we were in the area. I have so much to say about this place. The food is amazing and the service was friendly. I plan on going back. But I hope to see some improvement on a few things. If the food wasnt amazing as it was, this would be a 2 start ** rating. And i have to say the price range is not one $ more like $$ . Sure there are items around $10 and under. But our bill was almost $70 for 2 dinners 2 beers a bottle of soda ( because they were out of the fountain drinks) and 1/2 doze tacos to go. 1. The menu is almost impossible to read. The font is super small. And everything is crammed on the pages. I ended up using the photos provided to chose what I wanted. 2. The lighting was very low. In the day I guess its ok. But we went for dinner and I feel this added to the difficulty of reading the menu. 3. I ordered the $20 carne asada molcajete bowl and I'm pretty sure I read on the menu that it came with a side of rice and beans, that i never got. I can't be certain because the menu was so hard to read. I asked for a fork and steak knife to cut up my meat. I was given a spoon. 4. As advertised on the table i signed up for their text message alerts. It clearly stated " sign up and receive 25% off your entree. " and text I got said "Thank you for joining JJs Mexican Food! This restaurant delightfully surprised me. I wanted to take my mom to eat and we had never tried this place so we gave it a go. Walking in, the place is nicely decorated. Chips and salsa were provided and they were delicious. The waitress had excellent service and explained the dish very well. The only complaint I have is that the menus is huge and bright red making it hard to read. We ordered a mocajete that had a reasonable wait time. It was shredded beef in salsa with cactus and green onions. The presentation was not very pretty but the flavor was delicious. The sauce was perfect and the rice was light and not heavily seasoned like other places. The order comes with three tortillas. Me and my mom both filled up on one and cleaned the plate. read more

Chips & salsa were excellent and the heat on the salsa was just right for me at least alittle on the hot side which I like!! They should have their specialties highlighted and easy to find not buried in with everything else. The street tacos looked excellent but couldn't even find them on the menu. Came here on my way to Seattle. During the pandemic time, it was either this or Subway (in the same plaza), so I chose this. Place was very clean. I ordered a shrimp burrito. It was the best shrimp burrito I've had in my life. They did not skimp on the shrimp, very flavorful, good portions. I got nothing but good things to say about this place. The food here was amazing! It is just the best Mexican food in Salem hands down. All the food I have tried have been excellent. It's hard to write a review because every item is so great. Pork: The marinated pork is one of the best porks I have ever had. Chicken: Delicious. Lengua: If you like lengua, this is exactly what you like about it. Chips and salsa: All Mexican restaurants in the area offer chips and salsa, and JJ's has the best. The salsa has more flavor and just the rigth hint of spice. Enchilada sauce: Most places' enchilada sauce tastes like it's from a can or like it's an after thought, but JJ's enchilada sauce is amazing. It has a very complex flavor that I can't recommend more. Refried beans: Great refried beans. Rice: This is the real star. I have eaten and cooked rice my whole life. I love the stuff. I always try the rice wherever I go: Oregon, California, Texas, New York. I challenge you to find a better rice. This rice is magically fluffy and flavorful. The really amazing foods from JJ's that I fully recommend everyone try is their marinated pork, enchilada sauce, and especially the rice. If you only try one thing, try the rice... Hands down the best Mexican food. The burritos and tacos are the perfect size. A great selection of drinks, too. But I have to say, what really made me happy, was how warm and friendly the staff is. I haven't had this great of customer service in a long while. I am fortunate enough to work next door to this fine establishment, and plan on handing handfuls of money to the staff in exchange for burritos. The only good thing about this restaurant was the server; very pleasant, very attentive. The food was, unfortunately, atrocious - first, the fact my dining partner and I were the ONLY 2 people in this place on a Saturday evening around 6 should've been a big red flag. But on we pressed (and the fact this place has only 24 reviews - should've taken that into account, too, derp....live and learn). The salsa was middling, totally meh (like from a jar, thin and wimpy). I ordered a cheese enchilada and a chile relleno. Another red flag was the melted cheddar cheese on everything (??) Enchilada was nothing special (hard to screw up corn tortillas and cheese).The relleno was inedible and really weird - usually, they're coated in a fluffy egg batter. My dining partner (who sadly had also ordered one and was suffering as much I was trying to figure out where it had gone so wrong) pointed out this was like some sort of hybrid omelette thing - really rubbery, way-overcooked egg on the outside, with a THIN obviously canned, stringy chile inside, a TON of what appeared to be mozzarella cheese (again, ??!!!) and red sauce. Like eating the sole of a Nike. I tried to pick out the flimsy chile but it was a pointless effort. And ridiculously overpriced for this terrible, inedible meal (it was ultimately a shit-ton of $ to spend on basically just beans and rice, which I only ate because I was hungry - whole tragic mess should've been sent back while we beat a hasty retreat, but alas.....). I hate wasting money on bad food - life is simply too short. There are, presumably, FAR better options in the Salem area for Mexican food. This was a really gross and disappointing mess. At first we weren't sure it was a restaurant because it's in a strip mall and didn't really look like a Mexican restaurant. There was no one there when we walked in but a hostess quickly came out of the kitchen and greeted us. She then explained all the options my daughter and I could have that were gluten free. She was very nice and took her time to make sure we didn't eat something we shouldn't. I had a shrimp taco and my daughter had pork carnitas. My taco was very tasty and very inexpensive. My daughters carnita was plain but very tasty as well! My husband got a combination platter that was huge! We would definitely go there again! read more
