All the staff members I encountered were welcoming, friendly and professional...and made a long overdue cleaning and an almost emergency extraction a pleasant experience. I had X-rays, a thorough exam & cleaning, and was provided with a written phased treatment plan with estimated costs. They efficiently took care of the immediate problem that day with great care and attention to detail. I am so glad I went to this office and have found my new dental care team.

No, they unilaterally cancelled it for their convenience. And we wonder why healthcare is so poor in this country when doctor's offices don't value the patrons or honor their commitments. As human beings, realize not everyone has the flexibility or bandwidth in their jobs to appease your reminders. The front desk was rude, unempathetic and made it clear that my time was expendable. The dentist and owner has always been nice to me so some stars but other staff leave something to be desired... especially the front desk. To the admin: you are interacting with people whom have responsibilities that you'll never know or understand so I'll tell you the advice I got when I was just 15 years old: treat everyone with respect.

I'm honestly shocked to see all the bad reviews, I came to Byrd dental after I had many many bad…read moreexperiences at my previous dentist, Byrd has been good, maybe not great, but definitely good. I saw a ton of people complaining about appointments not being kept, all I can say is that this hasn't been me experience at all, not only have my appointments been kept promptly, but I have had to call multiple times over the past few months for emergency appointments due to some dental issues that I'm working on fixing, on almost every occasion they have gotten me in that same morning for my emergency, the could times they couldn't do that, they fit me in that same week. My bad experiences with my prior dentist involved things like failed root canals, placing a crown on a tooth that needed root canal treatment, without realizing the tooth needed a root canal, then getting a lump on my gums and having to drill a hole through the brand new crown to do that root canal. To make matters even worse, they put a filling in the root canaled crown which leaked for who knows how long, destroyong the tooth and requiring extraction. This same dentist also placed a crown that didn't cover all of my tooth on the inside portion of my mouth, I didn't find out until it was too late and that tooth also required extraction. My daughter had a root canal that also failed, she ended up going to a specialist for retreatment. All of this and more happened in a 2 year period with this dentist. This is what a 1 star dentist experience looks like, Byrd dental is definitely not a 1 star dentist.

I'll keep this as short as possible. Interestingly, I was in for my semi-annual dental visit a few…read moremonths back and was sent to get a periodontist to check an area that I have had ulcers in (my mouth) before, but they were not there whenever I went to the dentist. In the many years I've been going there, as I normally went twice a year, it seems they would have caught the issue prior to having to have a procedure to correct bone loss. I wasn't the only one that thought that. Anyway, prior to this, I had one of the dentists tell me I needed a procedure that costed over $800 (with insurance) to fix an area with a soft tooth. I then made an appointment with Dr. Byrd to get his opinion, who said I didn't need it fixed at that time. No telling; could be 10 years before needing fixed was the response. Another time, Dr. Byrd did an implant. About a year and a half after this, I got a bill for over $600. I called and asked why this was just getting to me as I always pay my bills the day I go to the dentist. Jasmine stated they just got the insurance information back. I asked the insurance company and was told the insurance was paid over a year ago, and Byrd Dental had requested the check to be reissued at least two times. Interestingly, they have a fee schedule, so there should not have been an issue. I spoke to Dr. Byrd, and he stuck up for his employee. Also, when I went to pay the bill, Jasmine stated that there was money on the account due to my husband going and money left over. Not sure why they didn't refund the monies. What if we had never gone back? Would they have just kept the money? If I owe money, they want it. Why don't they refund the overage they have to whomever it belongs to? Long story short. I'm not going back to there. Almost every time going in, there are new employees. The turnover is high, which leads, in my opinion, to too many mistakes. I went to both Dr. Byrd's when they've practiced there (and one is still there on Tuesdays only), and I always felt like I had a competent dentist. That feeling is gone! Additionally, in my opinion, the staff isn't very friendly.

Dr. Levy was able to get us in within a few days to have the procedure done. He performed the frenectomy with local anesthesia and a scalpel. Our two older children had laser frenectomies at other locations, but I preferred the scalpel method because my husband and I were able to stay with our baby the entire time (other practices do not allow parents in the room if the frenectomy is performed with a laser). Dr. Levy did an excellent job of explaining what to expect during the procedure, which took less than 10 minutes total. After the frenectomy, our daughter was more fussy than normal for about 1.5 days, but nursed successfully just 1 hour after the procedure. The nursing pain for me significantly decreased after the procedure. I'm very happy with the level of care and compassion that Dr. Levy and his hygienists gave us!

Every time I've gone, I've paid my bill & was good to go (over $400 worth out of pocket before I could leave). Dr. H had asked if I wanted a desensitizing treatment for my cavities. I had asked if they were covered by my insurance & she said yes so I went ahead and got it. The second time I received it for my other side, the front desk tried to charge me over $400 for it. I was like no- it should be covered that's what I was told by Dr. H. They said okay no worries we'll take care of it. They are calling me now 4 months later saying I have a $700+ bill overdue that I've never received nor was told about when I closed my account in November because of these treatments. Even the person on the phone was telling me she's shocked it's so much because she usually only sees it for $30 a tooth... make it make sense. Where did this bill all of a sudden come from? They better figure it out because I wouldn't have gotten the treatment otherwise if they had stuck to their word. Or had come back multiple times if I had known they were going to be so mistrusting to their word. I'm honestly exhausted of financial malpractice at dentist offices. I had thought I finally found a decent one. But this really took me over the edge. They told me at the end of last year that for 2026 they would stop taking my insurance, Delta Dental, which so many people have. Clearly, there is a disconnect between the patient/doctor experience & financial department & they'll continue to lose patients if they continue this. So beware!

Over the past 10 years I've moved around a lot and I've gone to...I think five other dentists. Family Smile Center is the only office that really stands out for being very thorough, using technology, and telling me information beyond just, "you have some cavities, and you grind your teeth." People there talked to me about oral cancer, tooth enamel, the health of my gums, TMJ, sensitivity...and the list goes on and on. The hygienist talks to you first, and then one of the doctors comes in to check and chat. The hygienists at Family Smile Center are great though, and you can tell that the doctors trust them to do a good job. The hygienists have advanced degrees in dental stuff too, so it's not like they're just some intern with a water pik. It was because of them that I FINALLY found floss that I could use on a regular basis without causing my gums to bleed. I FINALLY decreased my tooth sensitivity so I could eat cold things again. I live almost an hour away from Family Smile Center now but I still go there twice a year because they're worth the drive. They're awesome! I have a small mouth and my teeth are not great. Going to the dentist is pretty scary for me. My fear of having my throat blocked up is pretty strong. Family Smile Center is the only dentist I've gone to where I haven't panicked about that sort of thing.

The hygienist Rae (?), was AMAZING. She was super friendly. She took a full set of x-rays since I was a new patient and then gave me a pair of sunglasses to put on before she started my cleaning. They had numerous flavor options for the polishing paste. I was offered cherry, vanilla, mint and cookie dough. She checked on my comfort numerous times while she was working and was very thorough. There is a large flat-screen TV hanging high in front of the chair so you can watch TV while they work on your teeth. Once she completed the cleaning, Dr. Thackenkary came in to do the final examination. He did a complete oral cancer screen and checked the condition of my jaw, teeth and bite. He also explained about the pH of my saliva and how it helped to prevent cavities, which was interesting. He did not try to "sell" me anything else, like tooth whitening. Every other dentist I've been to has always tried to get me to pay for something else. Dr. Thackenkary advised me to come back in 6 months for my next routine visit and gave me a goodie bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash. Neither Dr. Thackenkary or Rae were condescending or rude. I've been to some dentists who get a bit nasty when they are telling you about your teeth and if there is any plaque or anything. Not these two! Rae just explained how to better floss my bottom molars to help prevent buildup in the future. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my visit. Friendly staff and straightforward dental care. I highly recommend others visit Opal Ridge Dental for their dental needs. You'll be pleased.
