So without much thought at all I declared that we needed to go inside and started across the street. What could Dad say? He gave me a look that clearly said "you're weird" and followed me in. Once inside we were greeted by dozens of items that I swear are in my Grandfathers basement right now. Dad must have been reading my mind b/c he actually said "I think you're grandfather has a couple of those in the basement" while pointing to a set of vinyl suitcases. The entire store is filled, floor to ceiling, with vintage pieces of all sizes and shapes. Big ticket items like tables, chairs and trunks to smaller accessories of baskets & picture frames. The layout and arrangement made it hard to navigate the store and what was more confusing was the location (I think) of the cash register & counter area... It's hidden behind a huge pile of stuff so you can't even see the front door if you're sitting behind the counter. Oh and we were in the shop for a good ten minutes and I don't think I saw the owner/manager once. I though that was weird.. and I can't forget to mention- I found the store to have a bit of a musty smell... which makes sense if you think about the items inside. Aelfie emailed the next day to apologize and tell me the Aziza was sold out in the 3x5 size. She showed me several other styles in that size and said I could choose one of those or size up to 4x6. Since I had my heart set on the Aziza, I told her I would size up and asked what the additional cost would be. She said there would be zero additional cost because the fault was hers for not keeping better track of inventory. Thus I received a gorgeous 4x6 rug for the price of a 3x5 rug. What a generous gesture! The rug arrived today and its vivid indigo-blue and creamy white stripes are even more beautiful in person. I look forward to purchasing more rugs from Aelfie, who is not only an enormously talented artist, but an ethical and admirable entrepreneur.

Under the guise of another craigstlist score like the $5000 credenza he'd scored off a guy on the upper east side just last week for $500. (I mean who says no to a craigslist run with the guy who scores a $5000 credenza at that kind of mark down?) They were two breeders with a keen eye for fashion and a strong nesting urge, and I just love nesting too so I was along for the ride. Anway this is all beside the point, but I feel like that's how Yelp reviews are supposed to be formatted. Obnoxious self indulgent personal aside, followed by earnest outpouring of love/vitiriol for local buisnesses. This review being one of the former. Aelfie's is located..... I don't know somewhere in Greenpoint, in what's essentially one of those old industrial buildings that have been converted into lofts/studios. You know like the pinnacle of chic these days. The owner is a BA-bizzie, she was almost equally as pregnant as my buddy's wife and had such an awesome hustle going on . The team here sources these teak pieces from Danish families, restores them and offers them for purchase to you and me at utterly reasonable prices. We'd actually just seen a few "vintage" furniture spots where they were asking similar prices for old, scratched and broken down pieces, and I commiserated on this with the ultra friendly and knowledgable salespeople here at Lanoba. We were probably going to get one of the tables with leaves built in to expand anyway, but the fact that they are so nice didn't hurt at all. They were even hospitable toward our children (ugly, rude kids, if I do say so myself), showing them the old TV sets and letting them know there was a call for them on the rotary phone. If you like intelligently designed wood tables, chairs, sideboards, coffee tables, dressers, entertainment centers and more, you should check Lanoba out.

And they taught us how to care for the furniture. The warehouse is situated VERY CLOSE to the tunnel. It's also close to all the filipino restaurants/bakeries I ALSO LOVE so it was nice buying our furniture and celebrating at the Philippine Bread House. We bought a house and our dining area is quite small so we knew we needed a well-designed, well-made dining table that was universal to all kinds of parties and beautiful to look at. Teak does that. Mid-century modern does that. It was hard to choose which we'd like and once we narrowed it down to the potential one table with chairs, we told them and they held it while we looked around which was so great cause we didn't feel so rushed to buy it cause I KNEW it would've been picked up by someone else if we hadn't claimed our interest. Our table is wide enough to be comfortably used as a work table and can extend up to 8 which is lovely. The chairs are comfortable, it helps you keep from slouching and the table we chose had a more beautiful grain to it than the others which helps in contrast to our hardwood. They even gave us a tote with a tin of danish cookies aka future sewing kit container and mineral oil as a thank you. How dare they be so thoughtful.! I love this place. I'm already scheming to make room somewhere in the house just so I can own another piece. I'm thinking a bookcase or...three. ;)
