This nondescript corner pizzeria is better than it's closest competition (you know who you are). The pizza is crisp and chewy, the cheese in proper ratio and the sauce seems generic but is good enough. If you're nearby and hungry, there is worse options, two in particular blocks away on Lancaster Ave.... Drive around the block and hit up Sam's. read more

I just opened a business around the corner from Sam's and had the pizza for the first time yesterday. It was amazing! I got a personal size plain cheese pizza and it was the perfect size for one person. The crust was just the right thickness and had just enough chewiness while still maintaining the right amount of crispiness. I even ate the outer crust which I don't always do. The sauce to cheese ratio was just the way I like it and it was made fresh while I waited. It didn't take more than 7-8 minutes but the wait was fine because I enjoyed taking to the very nice owner (Sam himself!) and some of the locals. This place is not fancy but it is super clean. (I noticed he got 100% on health dept reviews, too!) The counters are worn from many people over the years coming in to chat and grab a delicious bite to eat. To me, that indicates a loyal following. I can only imagine the great stories that have been told at that counter over the 40+ years he said he has been in business! We've lived in Downingtown for 12 years and before that (with a 5 year stop in between in another state) in Thorndale for 10. Had driven by this place only on occasion but never thought to stop in. Then I saw the great reviews on Yelp, and we decided to try it. Outstanding chicken cheesesteak!! We will definitely be back to try other items. I bought take out at Sam's last weekend and none of the three people working there were wearing masks. They also were making the pizza with their bare hands. They don't seem concerned with food safety or cleanliness. I've bought pizza from them dozens of times but never will again. read more

Many years ago , when I was a little girl back in the 80's, my Dad always ordered at the one in west Chester and they had the best pizza around. My how times change . Several owners later , the west Chester one is AWFUL. So sad they didn't keep the original recipe , as I still dream about it --also you used to collect the box top coupons and redeem them every 10th pizza for a free one ! I've often wondered where the family went who owned this back in the 80's and 90's so I could find them and ask them for the recipe ! We literally stumbled across this place recently while we were out walking and popped in to get a menu. The smell, when we opened the door, was AMAZING! So we thought we would give them a shot that evening and ordered a chicken cheesesteak pizza. The delivery guy was nice, courteous and very friendly as he and my husband chatted for a few before he took off. The pizza was piping hot and was absolutely delicious when we sank our teeth into it! Nothing redeemable. Chicken cheesesteak smelled like beef stew; they obviously don't clean the grill well. The fryer must be 75 degrees lower than it should be, because everything fried came out yellow and soggy. "Salads" are just hoagie stuff thrown in a takeout box. And they either don't believe COVID-19 exists or just don't care. It's rare I write reviews, but I should've just thrown that money in a blender. Wife and I went there for the first time today. My Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak Hoagie was EXCELLENT. Her Eggplant Parm sandwich was good. As the other reviewers have mentioned this place is definitely "old school" in its vibe - classic neighborhood pizzeria from the 70's/80's, and the gentleman proprietor was very friendly. This is the best kept secret of Downingtown. Sam has the best cheesesteaks in the area, easily as good as Jim's Steak's without having to go into the city or even into Delaware County. It has the look, feel, and smell of a downtown sandwich shop. read more

Good pizza and cheese steaks in the D-town area. Kind of hard to locate, it is on a back street, but a lot of guys at work recommended Sam's hands down when I moved to the area (work in Coatesville). If I'm grabbing pizza or a few sandwiches for a party, Sam's is typically the place I hit up unless someone has another request. Sams is by far the best cheesesteaks Around. I think it's the best in Pa. They have a fresh roll and great steak. Their old school Vulcan grill creates a flavor very hard to mimic. Sams has it all. We were so lucky back in the day, to have had our local favorite pizza/cheesesteak/stromboli place (when in Downingtown in the 1990's). About 20 years ago, we had to move to California for work opportunities, but we have kept coming back each year to have our "Sam's Fix" . We dream of their cheesesteaks and excellent Philly food all year, and are so grateful to come back each summer. Nice place to add small town feel to community. Pizza is just like the way it taste in Italy. Not easy to find that here on the states. Pizza price is $15 delivered to door with tip. When we added a salad or cheese steak the price point seemed to jump up quiet a bit. But that doesn't stop us from ordering. Cheese steak is very Philly tasting, salad is average. Back when I worked literally across the parking lot, Sam's was my favorite place to grab lunch. Fast, easy and tasty, Now, it's still my favorite place for steak sandwiches. I rate theirs as the best steak sandwiches ever. Sam told me it's because the rill is well seasoned (over 30 years). I think it also has to do with how he mixes the cheese and meat on the grill. The place is a great little corner cheesesteak spot, reasonably priced. Hoagies and steaks are excellent, the pizza is Meh not the best or close to it. Avoid any thing you'd expect to be fried, wings, fries, and other appetizers, they don't have a fryer everything's baked. It's a bit dirty inside as well but overall not bad. read more
