The woman…read moreserving it mentioned that the winery wasn't far away, so we thought it might be fun to stop for a tasting. Del Rio Vineyards is located in Gold Hill, in Oregon's Rogue Valley. Its tasting room occupies the historic Rock Point Hotel, built in 1864 as a stagecoach stop and later used as one of the area's first telegraph stations. The vineyards stretch out behind the hotel, with a colorful zinnia field off to one side. When you enter, there is a shop where you choose your flight. You can then sit in one of the downstairs rooms or outside at the picnic tables behind the hotel. There were many things I enjoyed about this stop. First was the relaxed, old-school tasting experience. We didn't need reservations. We simply selected a flight, found a place to sit and sampled the wines at our own pace. The flight was $12, but the fee was waived if we purchased two bottles. Everyone we interacted with was friendly. When they learned where we were headed next, they offered helpful recommendations for the rest of our trip. I also noticed that many people had brought food and were enjoying a picnic while drinking wine. The entire experience reminded me of Napa and Sonoma before they became so crowded and commercialized. As with any tasting, there were wines I really enjoyed and a few I would pass on. Overall, though, Del Rio was a relaxed and memorable stop.

She brought two glasses of water for the adults but said she didn't have small cups for the kids, so our two children had to share one plastic cup. A little later, we saw her carrying two small plastic cups to another table, which was confusing. The kids' menu also listed milk as a drink option, but when we asked for milk, she told us they don't carry it. The lobster cakes were okay, but my husband's pork chop was overcooked, my salad tasted moldy, and the kids' pizza was terrible. The biggest issue was that our server never came back to check on us after our food was served. Because of that, I didn't have the opportunity to let her know about my salad or ask for a replacement while we were eating. When I asked about a refund for the salad, I was told they couldn't refund it simply because I didn't like it. That was frustrating, especially since I had barely eaten it because it tasted spoiled. Having worked in several restaurants myself, I've always been taught that if a customer is unhappy with a meal and hasn't eaten it, the restaurant should either replace the dish or remove it from the bill. Overall, the service and food quality were both disappointing, and we won't be returning.

My drink included some beautiful accoutrements -- edible flowers and exotic herbs -- served in a large wine glass with a 4 cm dia. ice sphere (instead of cubes) for visual appeal, better chilling, and less dilution. There was also an appetizing spread of finger foods, charcuterie, and crudités. A live music group with a nice repertoire of memorable tunes gave people a reason to dance. Toward the end of the event, when activities started to slow, Linda provided a tour of the indoor space with casks. The wines were all good. Obviously liked some more than others. I personally appreciate and prefer biodynamic wines. I just think they have better flavor. I'm not a wine snob, but Troon is Demeter Biodynamic and Regenerative Organic Gold Certified (only one of four in the world). The Amphora Amber Vermentino (orange) was good and the Tannat was awesome. They do small batch so many of the reds had already sold out. Our server, Kitty, was incredibly knowledgeable about the wines, the process, and the uniqueness of each variety. We were blown away! She paced the tastings perfectly. We weren't waiting too long in between and we also didn't feel rushed. I didn't take pictures, but the outdoor lawn area is wonderful.
