Visited for the first time. I went to try the turkey legs they serve on Saturdays (only), but they didn't have any. My second choice was the beef, and again, they didn't have none. The only thing available was the pulled pork, so I decided to try it. Good tasting and VERY good portions. You might want to call before going and make sure they have what you want to eat available. Some of the best barbecue I have ever had. We had just moved to town and our very nice new neighbors brought us pulled pork, slaw, and baked beans to welcome us. The meat and slaw was excellent. I don't like baked beans so I can't comment, but my wife liked them. Swung by here on a whim. Called and they were closing in 8 minutes yet still invited us in. We ordered two pulled pork sandwiches, the fried bologna sandwich and potato salad. Hands down the best pulled pork I have ever had in my life. Lovely little place. Next time we hope to get there earlier to enjoy our time there more. If you are looking for real wood smoked barbeque then look no further. Don't be fooled by the exterior. Inside is clean and bright. The staff was very nice and friendly. I had a jumbo pork sandwich and they made a bean and slaw sandwich for my vegetarian wife. She loved it. The pork was perfect as was the spicy sauce. Finished it off with an amazing slice of pie! Place is awesome but the business is a mess. They close for lunch, their advertised hours are at best a mere suggestion and they never answer the phone. Again a fantastic West TN bbq joint but good luck getting them when their interested in running a restaurant/business. Could be a gold mine if someone got it together. read more

To say that Sam's is modest and unassuming is an understatement. But Sam's is not exactly off the foodie radar either. Word has that it's has been a Gibson Co. presence since the '40's. Sam's got press a couple of years ago before the pit burned up and almost destroyed the property. They had their own $50 designer t-shirts in Oak Hall as a fundraiser to rebuild. And it was rebuilt, with help from chefs and foodies from around the south. From what I read of the old place, the new facility is spacious and updated with industrial-chic lighting and flat-screen TV's. Aside from random clutter in the windows, the current dining area is actually clean-ish, which is normally a red flag for a business burning trees a couple of walls away. Updated decor (by BBQ joint standards) aside, Sam's is the real, traditional, and disappearing west TN slow-cooked BBQ joint. All meat is cooked over acorn- or fruit-bearing wood, whichever they have on hand and feel like burning on a given day. The backyard of the property is littered with stumps and limbs that will eventually be sacrificed into the pit. Get permission, then stick your head in the pit room on the left side of the building for a glimpse of old school BBQ'ing. Still, the meat is no product that can't be experienced in most west TN counties. It's good, not extraordinary, BBQ. The pork butt is adequate, not elite. Skip the bologna, as it's in the bottom half of my experience. Sandwiches are served with an underwhelming mayo-based slaw that seems store bought. My strongest recommendation is to get the BBQ sauce on the side. The sauces at Sam's, both mild and hot, are so tangy that they overwhelm the meat, in my opinion. It's not my thing, but it might be yours. Both sauces should be on the table, so figure out your taste as you go. read more

I am nearly incoherent if I don't have pounds of pulled pork in my freezer! We had never tried Sam's, but it had come highly recommended, and we were not sorry. We had already stopped by another place we had been to and bought 3 pounds, and while we ate delicious barbecue sandwiches at Sam's, he rustled up two pounds of pulled pork for us to take home. So I am here to tell you that Sam's was much smokier with no fat and gristle, plus it was a few dollars less. In short, it was stellar! So, we ate the three pounds we bought at the first place, sort of to just get it over with, but boy! When we got to Sam's our patience was rewarded! So good!!! The building is old, but neat as a pin inside. The restrooms are old, but clean. Fear not, sometimes it looks closed, but it isn't, and the people are sweet as pie. read more

Great place. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall from the outside, but clean inside. As soon as I walked in, the aroma of smoke and pork smacked me in the face. We ordered their 2lbs family pack, which came with a few sides and a pie. The pulled pork stood on its own and needed no sauce. They have quite a few selections of pies. Sams was recommended to me by one of my co-workers. I told her that I had to travel in the Jackson area and she said you have to go to Sams! She is from Texas and said this is the best brisket she's had outside of her home state. They did not disappoint! My wife had the brisket and I had the pulled pork. Outstanding!! To top it off we had a slice of sweet potato pie to go. It was the best pie I have had since my great aunt passed away years ago. We will be back I'm sure of it. read more

It's a funny thing how you can forget one of the gems of good eating right in your own back yard! I did, but I'm glad to say I remembered them, I did a search and found that Sam's BBQ was still dishing out some of the best BBQ made in the South! Keep it simple, and just order a the BBQ sandwiches. Don't mess up the flavor with a bunch of side orders, just sit down and keep the sandwiches coming. Or better yet order a full slab o his, melt in you mouth RIBS. Sam's ribs are best enjoyed also unadulterated, yep really! Don't slide these in between bread and ruin them. Just add some of Sam's sauce and enjoy the experience! And forget leaving without some homemade pie. The pies are decadent, made locally by a pie baking genius! How did a Denver man end up at Sam's? I flew in from Denver to see my mom, brother and his wife who live in Humboldt. I stopped at Sam's at 1:30 to order food to be picked up for a family dinner at 5. I ordered a rack of ribs, a whole chicken, a pound of pulled pork. What I got as well we're 3 sides, a whole delicious pie, and 6 rolls, well as plenty of BBQ sauce. To no surprise the order was waiting for me when I walked in at 5. All I can tell you is that dinner was a feeding frenzy of great food and smiling faces. Now I know what BBQ taste like when it made with so much care. read more

SAM's is about one of the few BBQ joints left in W. Tennessee, that still Cooks there BBQ with 100% real wood. The only reason I'm not giving them a five star is due to them using mayonnaise base slaw. I prefer the Vinegar base slaw. Yes I did have the mayo slaw with my sandwich but that's just because I would rather have it, than no slaw at all. As usual the service today was very friendly and welcoming. The pulled pork was on its mark but that's common when you're in the top two best BBQ joints in Tennessee. The place is not fancy buts very clean and that goes for the restrooms as well. At Sam's you can also get some of the best home made pies there are, Either by the slice or whole pie. If you get a can drink be sure to ask for ice because they're not very cold. If you want a break from the fake BBQ places that have gone over to the commercial gas cookers, then I highly recommend Sam's. read more

I was a bit hesitant to check out this place judging by the lackluster exterior, but I'm glad I did. Although not flashy by modern restaurant standards, the end result is that we're there for the food, right? They didn't disappoint. I ordered the rib plate with beans and potato salad and it was delicious. The bones fell right out of the meat. Super tender, cooked just right. The sides were great as well. If I had to nitpick and complain about anything, it's that the plate should have a slice of Texas toast to go along with it. But that's just nitpicking. Do yourself a favor, go check the place out. Don't waste your time on this. Went in and was completely ignored for nearly 10 minutes. A couple of women came out of the kitchen and gave me a "What the hell are you doing here?" look, but other than that, no one acknowledged my presence or offered the take my order.
