First off, the two waitstaff members were very friendly and took the time to explain the dishes we were interested in. Although the restaurant started getting quite busy, they still made an effort to refill our glasses and check on us regularly. I've been to this place several times. What's funny is that I don't go there for the ramen. I haven't even tried it yet. No, what draws me back time after time are the delicious takoyaki and the baby tako skewers. I would gladly eat several orders in one go. The takoyaki have always been hot and fresh, perfectly cooked to be slightly chewy on the outside with an almost gooey center. Each bite is bursting with flavor from the sauces and bonito flakes. The baby tako skewers can be a little hit or miss. By that I'm speaking of the garnish. The tako (octopus) itself is never an issue. It's always great. But sometimes they'll add some green onion on the side which really kicks the flavor up for me, while other times I'm given the skewers and nothing else. I never ask for the onion to be added because I honestly don't know if it's even supposed to be included at all. Am I not supposed to be eating it? Is that why it's not consistently provided? The Godzilla roll was quite delicious and this is coming from someone who doesn't normally like sushi. The restaurant is very aesthetic as well. It was neat to find this ramen bar in Pasadena. Ramen San opens late and their interior elements are much appreciated. What a beautiful restaurant! I think this place has all the tools necessary to become an amazing restaurant, and with the right management decisions, they could get there. Let's start with the negatives. Although the place is spiffy and beautiful, why choose to showcase a regular, local, low quality TV news program on a 65" in the center of your restaurant? I appreciate a char on my yakitori, but gosh--mine was burnt. My girlfriend's piece, however, seemed to have been properly done. In these kinds of situations I would imagine the chef would have to trash and restart and not try to mask their obvious mistake with overcoating teriyaki sauce on it. Ramen San nods to JINYA's success with baos and places their own take on their menu. It's quite good, but it's not a cha siu, charshu, chashu, or chasu Bao in anyway way, shape, or form. Yes there is pork in there, but it's your typical Chinese five spice meatball with green onions. Even in Chinese standards, Cha siu baos are made differently with cuts of sweet BBQ pork. Either the literature needs to change or there needs to be a change in the kitchen. Positives: The Tonkotsu ramen is pretty good! There is clearly a lot of Chinese influence at the restaurant and I think the soup also reflects that. Wood eared mushrooms are more often used in Szechuan cooking but I actually enjoy them in my soup. Each piece of chasu is carefully browned on each side to give it that smokey taste. Noodles are soft but not soggy; I mean, I prefer a bit more Al dente, but there's certainly nothing wrong with their take--it's just a preference thing. I would also recommend their takoyaki. The bonito flakes are a bit hard, almost as if they came from pencil shavings, but the texture of the dough is well executed. They could add a bit more lines of sauce on the plate to give customers the option of increasing that flavor profile, but it's already pretty good. Green tea is loose leaf and comes inside a pot that safely protects your hands from the hot glass and also gives you the option of removing the container with leaves when you've gotten the right amount of bitterness or strength. Images of the menu are provided! What a cool menu, by the way. Would visit again out of curiosity. I'm excited to see how this restaurant grows. This is a great place to go if you need to impress someone. There are booths along the sides and a community table at the center with a gorgeous centerpiece. Saw all the reviews , and I felt like it was a challenge to come see for my self if it's that good as the reviews say. When I came in I was greeted and welcomed . At the first look at the menu you can see that they have different variety of food types . They don't really focus on ramen . The menu only had about 5-7 ramen soups . I got the Tonkotsu , the soup didn't look very appetizing. The soup didn't have much flavor the pork belly was over cooked. And it had some kind of onion or some type of grass that ruined the noddles texture . I really don't see why this place has so many good reviews .
