Shared a really cool experience with some friends that surprised me with tickets to live jazz show. I was blown away by the skills that each artist showed. Seats seem like first come first serve, so we found a table in the middle that could accommodate for 4. Can get a little tight, but our servers were able to get our orders and drinks just fine. Didn't order any food, but the drinks were good. I love a good espresso martini and they got options here for those. Would recommend for anyone looking to get some live music in. The demographic is slightly on the older side, but honestly, no cares, musics for everybody.

A friend brought us to Sam First Bar for the first time, and what a hidden gem! Tucked away near the airport, this cozy little bar totally surprised us--in the best way. We happened to catch a West Coast jazz band doing an album release party, and the live music was absolutely incredible. It felt like a private concert in an intimate setting. The drinks were delicious, the service was attentive and friendly, and the vibe was just right--chill but elevated. It's rare to find a spot that nails both the craft cocktail scene and live music, but Sam First really delivers. Definitely worth seeking out!

Super groovy spot just outside of LAX. Incredible sound system and acoustics. Music, of course, was top-notch, as was their liquor selection.

Amaaaaazing venue and musicians. So close to lax, parking is a little hard because they have a tiny lot or street parking (with meters), so highly recommend coming early. Full bar and light snacks. Must buy a ticket but no requirement to buy any drinks like some other jazz bars. Super cozy bar with lots of these little tubes all around the ceiling and wall, I think it's for acoustic/soundproofing purposes but also adds to the ambience. Had such a fantastic time listening to live jazz and enjoying some white wine. They have their own record label and they are a nonprofit, which I thought was pretty cool. Highly recommend for JAZZ enthusiasts

This place is tucked away, but such a good find! I came here on a Friday night for the 9:30 show. We got lucky with parking, but it can be tricky to land street parking on this little side street so close to the airport. But the music was lovely (though the set felt short and was over before I knew it!), the empanadas were decent, and the space was intimate and cozy. I would have given 5 stars, but there was only one bartender serving everyone in the place, so service was a little slow to begin with, and toward the end of the night, the bartender did leave his customers to go talk to someone else in the audience, so we had to wait to close out our tab. That was a little weird! But aside from that, it was a really nice experience.

Live Jazz, and good drinks. Need I say more? The drinks were pretty good and the staff is all super friendly. There was a 20$ cover, and some really good musicians. The street parking was pretty easy to find on a Tuesday night.

Had such a great time here watching the 7:30pm jazz show. We were lucky enough to snag one of the few parking spots in the back, otherwise you'd need to park at one of the airport lots and walk over. This bar is RIGHT next to LAX. People from the hotels and those waiting for flights were there as well as a few locals! There isn't really dinner per se, but you can order a drink and a small appetizer like a charcuterie board or empanadas. Everything was pretty good and I'd come back again!

This place is SUCH A GEM! This was my first time visiting - I will be here at least monthly and I've told all my friends about it. The location is a bit odd smooshed in right near LAX, but I was able to find a parking spot easily in the back (follow instructions provided in email confirmation). The aesthetic is so cute and I love how it's a smaller cozy vibe with room for perhaps 20-30 people. I saw Tone Forest with Miro Sprague, Jason Ennis & Marty Jaffe with a couple friends and it was a wonderful experience. We went to the 7:30pm showing and there was also a 9:30pm showing you could attend. Tickets were $30/person and they have yummy food/bites and a full bar as well. The server/bartender will come around and quietly serve you during the show. This is my new favorite spot in West LA!!!

A nice and very intimate jazz lounge to visit. I enjoyed my first visit in this place and listened to a jazz band performance for about one and half hours. Their cocktails were delicious as well. You can buy the tickets online before going. Would love to return to see other performers.

Oh wow, this has now become my new favorite place in the LA area for serious live jazz listening . This small place sure gives a super intimate listening/ viewing experience. There are a variety of seating options, but up close are several armchairs (see photo of how close you are to the performers). As others mention, its good to arrive at least 30 mins early, to give you time to pick a choice seat, order a cocktail (the drinks are sophisticated and tasty), and during the time prior to the performance is the only time you can talk with the people you came with. As the website says, no talking is allowed during the performance, which totally makes sense given how small the venue is. People were there by themselves, totally fine to go by oneself if in the LA area with time to kill during an evening. It is literally in walking distance to the Terminal 1-2 area. The performer when I went was Edward Simon and his trio, playing music from his newly released album. It seems that Sam First carefully select a good range of serious jazz musicians to play. GIven the small venue size, its possible to chat with the performers after the show (at least on this day, people could).. I will be back for sure

Super cool intimate bar. Call ahead if you want to reserve a booth (would enhance the experience). Very small though so come a little early to get a spot. Very friendly, small service staff but enough to get things moving. I wasn't sure how to flag someone down to get a bite to eat as I was seated in front of the show so didn't want to distract the performance. Would recommend sitting in a booth near the bar as that's near the kitchen so you could get small bites as well as drinks without impeding the performance.

Jazz bar right by LAX, seriously, one wrong turn and you'll be stuck in LAX traffic. Came for a Gerald Clinton Tuesday night with some friends and it was so fun and romantic! Tips: * Seating might be difficult if you come late * Bring some ear plugs incase you sit near the front Green Beast cocktail (5/5) refreshing w a little salt and absinthe. Best cocktail I've had! Service was so pleasant, from the security to the bartenders! Thank you for hosting a wonderful night.

Ask the Community - Sam First Bar

What is a good time to be there for a group of 6?

I would get there at least an hour prior to the start time.

    What is the parking situation?

Small lot. Otherwise street parking available (meters drop running at six pm!) and other paid parking lots from the hotels. I recommend coming early!

    Is this place still open?

    Yes

    Can you make reservations?

Yes, pre-sale tickets can be purchased through the website by visiting Samfirstbar.com/music

Looking at the line up for who's playing , but it also says to buy tickets, so we arriving at the bar do we pay cover and tickets to see the band?

The ticket is your cover charge. You can either buy them ahead of time on the website or at the door. However the room can fill up quickly so always better to purchase ahead of time.

What's with the glasses on the logo? Is this place for nerds only? Am I allowed to go in there in start a good ol fashioned bar fight?

The bar is named after the owner's grandfather Sam, and he wore spectacles (and was a tailor). We pay attention to the details, and we're for everyone - nerds included. No bar fights please

    When is Happy Hour?

We double down on happy hour: regular happy hour is 4-7pm and late night happy hour is 11pm until close.

Cool to watch the chefs work with the open kitchen atmosphere. Farm to table dining, menu seems to switch up depending on what's in season, but my friend was pumped that the sticky toffee pudding was still on the menu since she last visited! Guava mojito: Very refreshing with mint but perhaps too watered down as I barely tasted the gin Smoked Tomat: An interesting smoky and savory drink, pretty strong (for me) Asparagus: I wish I got a photo of this because the black butter they used made us call this oil spill asparagus. Some of the ends were pretty tough and inedible and it tasted pretty much just like a vegetable not a lot of salt or butter flavor. Wouldn't get it again. Potatoes: BEST PART!!!!!!!!! GET THESE! Crispy but soft in the center, buttery goodness Blackened Cod with green curry and mystery string bean: The cod was tender and definitely tasted like the fish had been caught today. This dish would have benefitted from a side of rice to sop up all that green curry, especially since its family style shared food in a shallow plate it was hard to enjoy much of the curry. It also had a mystery black string bean that looked like a snake and some very pickley pickled vegetables. Odd flavor profile to say the least and not visually appetizing or Instagramable ha! Welsh rarebit (we thought the menu said rabbit)! This item was described to us as an open faced grilled cheese but it reminded me more of like Francesinha in Portugal without the meat. It was not really cheese bread at all. It was huge to where we thought it was almost a cake or a piece of meat tbh. It was very dense and while a few bites were good I think I would've rather tried the bread with butter. Sticky Toffee Pudding: Decadent, but not really a pudding at all. It's more of a dense loaf with a toffee demiglaze. My friend loves it because the dish is hot with the cold ice cream scoop on top. The flavor was a very rich and strong toffee flavor. I think I might like something sweeter though next time. Very generous letting the girls gab for over an hour and didn't feel rushed out. And apparently they have a rooftop?! I might come back for the atmosphere but the food wasn't craveable for me EXPENSIVE! Oops! For a casual vibe the price isn't casual yall. We split all of these items and ended up paying ~$95 each with tax and tip.

However, I believe that having a comfortable conversation at a bar with live music is a contradiction, so no points lost there. My main issues with The Washington are as follows: 1) expensive 2) poor drink selection. These two issues are not independent as I am ok paying ~$20 a drink only if the cocktails are going above and beyond in some sort of way. For example, the drink has some sort of complicated syrups or uses some sort of unconventional technique that I would not want to replicate at home. However, you cannot really find creative cocktails here. And, on top of that, I also find a lackluster selection of drinks. I'm not entirely sure why there isn't more gin/vodka cocktail selection (I am well aware that they can make standard bar drinks that are not explicitly listed, but I am critiquing the lack of 'original drinks').

Server Álvaro is an actual SAINT at Saint & Second!…read more I want to start by clarifying that I went to S&S yesterday afternoon ready to cry major boo-hoo tears to my two besties, without much of an appetite. Instead, I ended up with a full belly and side cramps from laughing along with our awesome server, Alvaro. The Man. The Myth. The Legend that he is! Small Backstory: Last Friday I lost my job of almost 25 years in public education due to a complicated work accident (my back was broken & I now have screws in my spine) and I planned to whine to my best friends into a cocktail or two, and get out plenty of Kim Kardashian ugly-cry faces until it would be time to go home. Enter ALVARO! This kind man had the nerve to be polite to us! The nerve! LOL. He greeted us with a warm smile while my cold heart was practically making it snow. He explained all portions of the breathtaking menu when I had planed to eat my sadness. He even had the GALL to say if we wanted something not on the menu that he would see what he could do to make it happen! Here I was, ready to drink Unicorn Tears, and he was cheering me up! WHAT THE??! LOL The three is us started with the MEZZE PLATE. And OH LORD! I think we ate the print off of the plates while trying to get to the last crumb. We polished off a whole extra serving of cucumber slices in the process, by the way, and I'm not embarrassed to say that. The Turkish honey-sweetened labne was such a party in our mouths! Make of that what you will. Each of us got a dinner entre, with mine being the S&S Fish and Chips. I loved that the fillet was not overly battered and the chips had an almost double-Belgium fried taste going on. I couldn't help but swipe several spoons worth of aged-cheddar grits off a friend's seared pork chop plate. Now THOSE were some butter-heaven sent grits! My drink, that kept shooting partially through my nostrils from laughter, was a classic margarita on the rocks. No margaritas were injured/harmed in the process of my belly laughter. At some point towards the end of our night, a patron of the mall next door pulled the site-wide fire alarm, ringing through the whole location for everyone to use caution and head to the closest exit. If you grew up like my friends and I, you don't follow that suggestion unless you're trying to run out on the bill like a jerk. Bless be to Alvaro, he stopped by our table several times to apologize about the noise and flashing lights and explained the fire department was working on it. I explained that the Hood Cricket sound didn't bother us and we were happy to wait out the alarm. So not only did Alvaro provide us with excellent service, an outstanding meal, and generous smiles, but he also made sure that we felt SEEN. And THAT is what made the whole evening worth it. No sadness or cringey tears about a lost job were needed. It ends up all we needed was a server named Alvaro at Saint & Second to make my spirits feel high again. Pricing is a bit high but was totally worth it! Patrons were dressed business casual. Sound level, not counting the hood cricket, was mid and conversation was easy to have. Several televisions were playing different stations but no captions were provided. There is handicap parking available in the parking garage located just outside the front door of the establishment and no stairs or elevators are needed to enter. There are several entrances/exits to the available outdoor seating area and outdoor heaters are available. Glances around showed me that every patron I saw was tucking into their plates with smiles and were enjoying themselves. I have already made plans to return to S&S in another two weeks because it was indeed THAT GOOD! And for those fine diners that are wondering, "But what is a Hood Cricket?" Our server Josh was also a fine, pleasant fellow. The issue we had was more with the management (or seemingly lack thereof) and the excessive fees. This is the first restaurant I've ever been to that doesn't (or "can't") accept prepaid Opentable Reward cards - everyone who has an Opentable Reward card needs to proceed with extreme caution. Our server Josh did everything he could, but I believe the manager(s) could have done SOMETHING: they could have offered some gesture/compromise or at least come to our table to talk with us - to show some hospitality. Maybe I'm just comparing with my excellent managers at my restaurant, but I definitely noticed that at this restaurant. Regarding the excessive fees, the automatic 20% gratuity even for small parties is extremely excessive, I could see that possibly making some servers complacent - and that's not to mention that apparently there's another 4% or so wellness fee added on top of that. All in all, the server and food were quite good, while the management/manager(s) and fees were unsatisfactory. If you have an Opentable Reward card, go to any other restaurant.

The outdoor patio is such a cool space to just relax, people watch, and enjoy the scenery. They had music playing along with a big screen TV, which made it feel like a perfect chill spot to unwind without feeling overcrowded. Since I went midday, it wasn't too packed, which honestly made the experience even more enjoyable. The staff were absolutely sweet, friendly, and very attentive -- not just to me, but also to the couple sitting nearby. Customer service definitely did not go unnoticed. I'll definitely be back to try the food next time!

Ordered the Napa Salad with chicken -- it was a decent salad with crunchy croutons. Also order the duo dip with warm tortilla chips. The pimento cheese dip was really good. Did not order from the bar this time, but looked good like they have a great selection of liquor to choose from. The service was meh -- once we received our food, the wait staff never stopped by to check if we needed anything else nor refill our beverage. Also waited for at least ten minutes after we were finished eating before having to flag down the wait staff for the bill. Be sure to get your parking ticket validated. Also the pricing is a bit high -- not as affordable for a lunch menu.
