Music with explicit references to cocaine was playing loudly -- not ideal, especially with a child present in the shop at the time. At one point, an employee made a loud comment in our direction -- "sharing is caring" -- which didn't relate to anything happening. When I asked what he meant, he smirked and said "oh, nothing," offering no explanation. Between the lack of basic customer service and the uncomfortable behavior, the experience came across as unprofessional and, frankly, a bit unsettling. I won't be returning. The signs were there ..... things were happening; but I chose to ignore the signs. It all started a couple of years ago when my key wouldn't turn in the lock of my vintage SUV cargo door. I started using the auto lock to open that door.... This was definitely kind of wacKEY! About a year ago my key again started acting funKEY! It could open my driver side door lock but wouldn't turn in the lock of the passenger side door..... This was definitely getting kind of kooKEY! And then two weeks ago I dropped off my friend at the entrance to Kuakini Physician's Tower for a doctor's appointment and for some strange reason I couldn't get the key out of the starter switch ..... This was definitely was getting more and more spooKEY! I searched for and found my spare key and it opened all the doors and went in and out of the ignition switch just fine .... Duh! I knew I needed a new key which definitely made me feel like a donKEY. I haven't made a duplicate key for years and discovered the place I used to go to, Modern Key Shop on Bethel was no longer in business.... This definitely made me feel kind of unlucKEY. I remembered that City Mill made keys so I went to their store on Nimitz. They have converted to an automated key making machine so I push the call button, a clerk comes over and that person inserted my key in this slot and then that slot and got a message saying they didn't have my key .... This definitely made me feel like their key making machine was hoKEY and they were key making rooKEYs I drive over to Lowe's and they too make keys and also use an automated key making machine. I've been to so many different key shops to get one key made... its a Masterlock key. No one makes it! Luckily, my landlord told me to try Salz Lock and Safe to see if they can make it. Luckily, I went... and they DO make copies of the Masterlock key!!! I went to the store, and its a small store in the building. They have a few parking stalls reserved for their shop. I went in, and was greeted immediately. I asked if they can make a copy of my Masterlock key, and to my surprise, they do! The guy took my key, and I swear, not even 5 or 10 seconds later, he made my spare key! I was shocked to see how fast he did it! I paid... wasn't as much as I thought it would be, so this place is super cheap (compared with other places i normally get my keys done). They also sell lanyards, key chains, and key rings... everything you need for your keys! Since I needed other keys made, I went back to their location again, and again, good service, and to my surprise again, the key was made in less than 30 seconds! LOL. I wanted to have a copy of my car key for my 2006 Honda Civic. The key itself was a little wobbly so I wanted them to tighten it up. They said the mount on the inside was starting to fall apart so I needed to replace the key. Once they were done, I had no doubt the keys would work. They even gave me my original key back mounted on another plastic body and said it was a last resort in case the new one and it's backup didn't work. We have a rare Winkhaus lock on our front door that stopped locking and unlocking with the key. Mark Yealey of Salz Lock and Safe was determined to get it working again. In June, after a lot of research, he ordered a new gearbox that first arrived in the wrong size. We returned home from our vacation to find that we had some trouble getting into our condominium unit. I lost the manual key to my Mini. Since I normally only carry my manual key instead of the whole fob/key assembly when I go to the beach I had to get the key replaced. Thus, I ordered an OEM key slug from mainland. I went to "CM", "HD" and "L" chain stores and they all said they didn't cut BMW/Mini and told me to go to Salz. Salz is a small shop but was busy. When other key cutting services told me to go here that was my first sign of quality workmanship and then the amount of customers coming in the shop told me I made the right choice. They cut the slug on site and it worked on first cut (those who have BMW/Mini know how finicky and precise the duplicate has to be). Anyway I side thing I noticed is they do safes too. I've been to a couple of City Mills, Ace Hardware, and...Wal-Mart (this was the worst). I've had keys that didn't work at all, keys that don't even go into the lock, and keys that work terribly. Is it really that complicated to cut keys? I guess they don't really hire professionals to cut keys at those bigger stores. Everyone is a professional at Salz. Salz is located along Waialae Ave, near the big intersection of Kapahulu, King, and Kapiolani, across from Goodyear, next to Mandalay. They have their own parking lot with specified parking spaces. It's a small shop, but filled with numerous key and lock related items such as key rings, lanyards, specialty NFL team keys, safes, combination locks, and etc. Prices start at $3.00 for single cut key copies. All the newer locks have the same style keys, so almost all the keys I need to make are $3.00 each. Double side keys start at $4.50, and there are many more services Salz offers. The staff that work there are very friendly, upbeat, and personable. Excellent customer service. I like how they use key rings to separate all the keys. Very helpful! And I can use the rings too!
