For being in a National Park tourist town this place is awesome!! Especially if you want something different than pub food. To start there are 13 beers on draft as well as many bottled. Husband had the filet and it was cooked to perfection and very yummy! Side veggies and potatoes au gratin were great. Rolls were served with cranberry butter which neither of us had ever had. I don't like butter but this was gooood. My husband doesn't like cranberries but he loved the butter. I had Heifer salad with poppyseed dressing; it was delicious. Beer selection was fantastic of local and regional selections on tap as well as a comprehensive liquor and blended ice drinks. Had a great crow peak IPA, and pina colada. Entree was the Salty Steer burger (huge and juicy) and the tomahawk steak. This beef is processed less that 1/4 mile away. How much more fresh can that be? Fresh beef is SOOO much better. Stopped by with our party of 13 looking forward to some good steaks and bison. Had 2 people order the sirloin steak, both medium rare and when they came out one was rare and the other was well done. One actually looked like a steak while the other was more of a thick end cut that would've been impossible for anyone to cook as a steak consistently thru. 3 of our people ordered the 16oz bison ribeye's, medium rare. All three came out looking like different sizes and thicknesses. We're convinced that one of the orders which was much larger and thinner was a beef ribeye, looksed smelled and tasted different from the others. There was absolutely no consistency in how this place cuts or cooks their steak. The remaining people in our party seemed to be happy with their orders and it appears that the majority of the positive reviews here are for either pasta, salads or chicken. I would not call the Salty Steer as steakhouse. The storefront, the interior, the ambience all look great but they do not deliver on food. We all agreed that this restaurant is nothing more than a tourist trap. read more

Slow service and missing items had me wishing I took my family somewhere else. To begin, I need to recognize that I may be the anomaly. The reviews look great and the environment was nice so I was very excited to eat here. We were seated fairly quickly (wasn't busy despite being prime lunchtime) and the host seemed nice. The waitress came not too long behind and offered us drinks. I had seen signs and read reviews about their flights and I asked about them. I was informed I couldn't get one because someone already had one, and they only had "one flight thing". She said something about how they had lost glasses recently. A little sad, I shrugged it off and ordered one of the local beers I was interested in anyway. Apparently they were out of that one. No problem, there was another local IPA that looked good. Out of that, too. In fact the first four beers I asked for were all "out". At this point I decided water was fine and chalked one up for being healthy. Go me. My family of 5 quickly ordered our meals and all got the same thing -- burgers and fries. We were starving after hiking through the badlands all morning and felt like we could eat a cow together. Or bison. Fast forward 45 minutes. Multiple other large families had entered, ordered and even gotten their food (including a couple burgers). We had nothing. Our waitress came one time about 30 minutes after in to let us know "it will just be one more minute" and offered us refills. It was the only time she came, after which I couldn't find her. We ordered at 1:07 and didn't get our food until just shy of 2:00. Another waitress helped bring us our food and even our check. We never saw our waitress again. Like I said, maybe we were the exception. It was not busy and several other people got their food fast, even before us. Most of them looked happy. And while the food tasted fine (only reason it got 2 stars), the overall experience left us disappointed. I've only been once but I couldn't recommend the restaurant to a friend. read more

This place is the biggest surprise in Wall. Bigger than the Wall T Rex. Bigger than the Wall jackalope. Fantastic steaks. Best steak fries I ever had. Delicious wedge salad. My husband & I decided to try this new place as the past reviews, with the exception of one bad review, we're good. We both had a small wedge salad that was really good. My deviled eggs were boiled eggs cut in half with a slice of jalapeño and a few bacon bits. They didn't even bother with the paprika! Wtf? Oh and a side of Mac and cheese that set up like concrete. We were staying overnight in Wall after a day of travel with Wall Drug as our destination for the end of that leg of our trip. We never dreamed that we would find NO food delivery available to the motel for dinner! We had very few options and decided to try Salty Steer due to the good reviews on Yelp. What a great choice!! The only real negative we found was that it was very loud. They were busy and there are high ceilings in a pretty open space, so nothing to help with the noise from the people or the music, which we were unfortunately seated by the large corner speaker. Even with that drawback, the food more than made up for it. We didn't take pics of the baby wedge, but should have; combo of ingredients is thoughtful and tasty. The Salmon was cooked perfectly and well-seasoned. Chose the seasonal veg of carrots and Brussels sprouts and they didn't disappoint. Two had the meatloaf. Again, cooked perfectly and the tangy-sweet bbq sauce on top was exceptional. One had the Mac and cheese with lobster added. This was really the only food to disappoint a bit - the lobster was chewy. However, our 11-yr-old who ordered it said that the Mac and cheese made up for it and really, what can you expect from ordering lobster in South Dakota. Lol. His only regret was not being able to eat it all because he got too full. If we are ever in Wall again we will definitely be back! read more

Service: SUCKED (to the point of frustration) have MANY examples but ordering draft then get a bottle and politely ask if it can be draft and get told "it's the same thing" so I say no I would like draft like I ordered. Walks to the bar and guessing explains the situation because multiple workers looked up at us with the "really" expression. Look I know this place is new and mistakes happen so it's okay that our drink was wrong. But save the faces. Ambiance: Hipster country. Just in need of training and professionalism. It's a beautiful space but afraid that doesn't men the good and service lives up to the ambience. Ordered a bison rib eye that, while cooked to the correct temperature, was so tough it wasn't going to be worth my effort to struggle through it. I returned it, it was told buffalo is different than beef. I've cooked buffalo for years so I know it's very lean, cooks much faster than beef, but shoe leather is shoe leather! I re-ordered their buffalo burger-two four ounce burgers medium rare. It arrived without the caramelized onions the menu detailed. Had to go to the bar to get a night and fork and fresh water as the inattentive server, despite being reminded twice, never brought. Nor was there any follow up to ask about my satisfaction. The burger was served well done, tasteless and rubbery. I don't know what I should've ordered here, however I'll never know as I have no intention of returning to the place. Management needs to pay more attention to food and service quality. Why 2 stars? The salad was good. read more
