Nice, newer looking setting, very well located to huge local attraction. Interesting menu with lots to offer. Service today was Slow-Slow-Slow...staff moving about quickly, but seemed disorganized and helter skelter and place was not slammed, just confused...may have been a kitchen issue too as order was very late to arrive at table. Food was good however. My burger was delicious, potato salad seemed like regular commercially available product. Heifer burger; two patties, feta cheese, grilled peaches, caramelized onions was awesome, too tall to eat like a burger so I dig in with fork and knife. Wife had appetizer portion of wings and loved them; crispy and sauced nicely. Daughter ordered appetizer portion of fried calamari which was only so so, commercial frozen product but we were in South Dakota. Went for a late lunch before heading to the badlands but were well cared for and enjoyed the unique mounts and decor. Very clean and new feeling. We both ordered salads - one steak one chicken and both were amazing! Wanted to order the bison burger but seemed like too much before a hike. The salads were excellent and did not skimp on the berries or meat - and speaking of meat! THE BEST steak! I feel like steak on salads tends to be the leftovers but not this one. So considering where we were, in the middle of cattle country, we figured the advertised steak house in town was going to knock it out of the park. We went with a local, a friend. He mentioned the last time he was here the steak was tough, but he was willing to try again. First we'll start with the CON: I ordered the bone-in, daughter got the filet, friend got the strip. Bone-in order: Med Rare. Filet: Med Rare. Strip: Med. To say my Bone-in was Medium would be generous. It was leaning towards Med-Well. Barely even pink, even at the bone. Not a lot of seasoning so had to salt at the table. This might be the first steak I've ever not finished. It just wasn't good. Filet was a solid medium. Light pink, nothing rare about it. Still good quality, though, daughter ate it. Strip was WELL, to the point that as he was cutting through this grey monstrosity, it was turning white it was so dry. There was only one waiter for the entire place. I think they had a callout issue because we, and another party, stood in confusion for a few minutes at the check-in kiosk for several minutes before he peeked out of the kitchen and said he'd be with us shortly. Service was very slow, but I can't put the blame on the waiter, he was the only one there and doing what he could. He apologized. There was a note on the menu saying a gratuity would be added for 6+ people. When we got the bill we could not see it and asked him if it was added after (we didn't want to double-tip for fairness to us, but didn't want to assume and leave him untipped in fairness to him). He said he removed the gratuity because he could not give us good service. Of course we politely told him that was nonsense and he was doing everything he could, so we absolutely added a tip. Last CON: Price. I don't know if they keep these prices year-round or not, but these were absolutely "fleece the tourist" prices. PRO: Two people in our party ordered the smash burgers, and said they were awesome. They got the huge 4-patty one. Moist, good flavor, had to eat with a knife and fork. They said, barring the price, they would eat it again. Last person got the lobster mac. I never eat restaurant mac because it's always overdone and fancied up to the point of being nasty. However, this mac was AMAZING. I don't say that lightly. The cheese was perfectly buttery smooth, but still with consistency (real cheese, not a sauce). Often the cheese is grainy because of how they make it. This was not. Silk. Noodles were just right. Flavors thrown in were perfect. I've never had good mac n cheese and this was great. The lobster was what you'd expect for a land-locked state--nothing special, nothing bad. But man, that mac was spot on. Overall: A steak house, in steak country, ruining steaks is not something to overlook lightly. While all the rest of the food was great, and keeping them from a One-Star, and our poor server busted his BUTT to help all of the tables simultaneously, so he deserves all the kudos. We didn't ask for the steaks to be taken off the bill (we did tell him they were the wrong temp so he could let the cook know to pay attention so they didn't get a ton of angry people). But we won't be going back unless their prices plunge significantly, and if we do, we won't be ordering steaks. It was a $275 lesson we won't soon forget. read more

Worst steak I have ever had. I had the hardest time just cutting it and worst of all trying to chew it. The augratin potatoes were like soup. My wife had the same. The other couple with us had the burger and he said it the driest burger he has had. I do not recommend going there unless your in a gambling mood to see what you get. read more

My friend and I went here on a Saturday night while we were staying in Wall. We arrived around 9 pm and it was still pretty busy but we didn't have to wait to get seated. There is a nice bar area and tables and high tops around the restaurant. It was a nice ambiance! There was a nice selection of local beers and you could get a flight if you wanted. It is always great to see vegetarian options when going to a steakhouse! I got the heifer salad and a side of Mac and cheese (no bacon) and my friend got the deviled eggs and the brussel sprouts and everything was Delicious!!! The salad was also Huge! Amazing! Best Cheese Fries (Steer Fries) I've EVER had. Everything we had there was awesome. We were staying in Wall SD for the end of our vacation here and stopped for dinner at the Salty Steer. First the service was great. We ordered two things and split them. The first was deviled eggs which had a great taste and a bit of a kick which was a fun start to dinner ! We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and both of us were quite stunned how delicious it was. The waitstaff and front of house were doing a fantastic job very kind and courteous. however management was completely lacking or nonexistent. perhaps this was the anomaly but sections were not being followed well, bar tender was running food constantly and front staff where just scattered trying to deliver good service. had to leave before we got our food kitchen was slow. Visited for the first time. It has only been open 3 years so it is very nice inside. We tried the Bison Meatloaf and Pan-seared Salmon. Both were very generous potions with excellent side opinions. The food here was phenomenal! I got the bison burger, which was great but HEAVY. It could feed two people. I got the lobster Mac and cheese as a side, and I was a bit hesitant because lobster Mac and cheese can be very hit or miss, especially in land locked states. However, it was genuinely the best lobster Mac and cheese I've ever had, and I easily regretted not getting it as my entree. Everyone at my table tried it and loved it as well. For an appetizer, we got the buffalo sprouts. They were good but the serving size was small for an appetizer. My table got sliders and the buffalo rib eye. Both got raving reviews as well. Even the salad was quite good. The potatoes were not special, as well as the side winder fries. The fries were better than the potatoes though. We also got two drinks, a vodka cran and some he Dakota sky. The vodka cran is hard to mess up, but it was strong. The Dakota sky was good and larger than I thought it would be. The restaurant ambiance is amazing! Extremely clean and everyone is so friendly! Our server Rainey was amazing! She checked on us frequently and was very very nice. The food was beyond amazing! Hubby had the prime rib dip and I had the bison burger! We also had the deviled eggs and the Brussels sprouts. All were amazing. Such great flavors. I would suggest the owner or management work on their marketing. I had to find the restaurant , instead of them finding me. The signage outside does not adequately show what the building is. Took our order back to the hotel because we had to get up at 2am for Milky Way photos. My girlfriend's burger wasn't perfectly executed (soggy bun that needed some toasting) but everything tasted amazing. We've been traveling for 10 days, and it can be tough to get some good balanced meals with tasty veggies, so this was an oasis for us. They're all up to speed with Apple Pay and things like that, and use QR codes to take payment -- Surprisingly modern in this lil ole town.
