I went to Salty Steer after looking at their online menu and noting that they had buffalo steaks! That's something I've never had before and it's not something commonly found in restaurants in other areas. Salty Steer definitely seemed like the best place in Wall to try out. The restaurant is inside kind of a mall/office building and occupies a portion of the first floor. It's pretty easy to find since the signs for the restaurant are plastered all around the exterior. They have a menu posted on a table right in front and when I saw it, I was really confused as it didn't match the online menu at all (they've since updated the menu). They changed a bunch of items and now only offer buffalo steak in the summer, June-Sept. I got there a couple of days late and they confirmed they were out. Oh well, we still decided to go to try some of their other items. Buffalo Meatloaf ($27) - The meatloaf comes with a wedge salad and a choice of either blue cheese or ranch dressing. In addition to the dressing, the salad is also drizzled with balsamic to add some additional sweetness and tang. The toppings are quite plentiful - there's sliced red onion, pine nuts, gorgonzola cheese, and plenty of bacon bits sprinkled around. I normally don't like gorgonzola, but there isn't too much and it's not that strong in comparison to the dressing. There are also sliced cherry tomatoes scattered around the fringes of the lettuce. Some other places drown the salad with way too much dressing, but here, the ratio is pretty good. Overall it's a well constructed wedge salad, although they don't de-core the iceberg lettuce. (4/5) The meatloaf itself is quite good. It's fluffy and soft and perfectly seasoned. They normally serve it with homemade barbecue sauce drizzled on top but I opted to get it on the side. The sauce is actually not needed given how moist and tender the meat is. The sauce itself is sweet and tangy and I wonder if they put huckleberry in it? It's quite good and perfect with the meatloaf (5/5). The meatloaf is served with mashed potatoes - salted well, fluffy, skin-on and well mashed, topped with melted cheese. For some reason The Salty Steer doesn't provide spoons so you have to eat the mash with a fork (4/5). They also give a side of veggies, included roasted brussels sprouts and carrots. The carrots are a bit disappointing - they are pretty tasteless and not sweet at all. While the texture is still a little bit firm (but cooked) it feels like they boiled the carrots, resulting in all the flavor leeching out. (3/5) Open Range Buffalo Burger ($26) - The buffalo/bison flavor is very apparent in the meat in this burger, unlike the meatloaf. It is also super lean, and even though I ordered the burgers medium, I felt like the patties were exceptionally dry. A generous heaping of cooked huckleberry, which add sweet fruity notes, helps with the moisture, but it doesn't make up for the shortfall. There is apparently supposed to be bacon jam on the burger, but I couldn't really identify it, and even if included, I'm sure it isn't added in large amounts enough to overcome the dry burger. The two patties are served on a small pile of onion straws that help accentuate the dryness. (2/5) The burger comes with a choice of steak fries or potato salad - we went with the fries and have to say that they aren't steak fries. Instead, they are pretty much identical to Lamb Weston Potato Dippers. At any rate, they are lightly seasoned, fried until they develop a light crisp on the exterior and a fluffy interior. (4/5) Spoiler alert: I had several more buffalo/bison burgers over the course of this road trip, and this was easily the worst of the bunch. Definitely avoid that dish, but I'm sure most of the rest of the menu items are pretty good. Bathrooms - Shared office bathrooms. Go through the rear door into the main building. Consider that 4 stars a 5 star rating in Wall, SD. There are so few options in town it's kinda crazy. We were here 2 nights and ended up coming back on the second night for another round. Went here for dinner on a Friday night after exploring the Badlands. It is beside Wall Drug! The restaurant is very spacious. Our server Karol was very attentive and nice. The baby wedge salad was awesome! Crisp, fresh vegetables with very refreshing ranch and balsamic glaze. Steak pasta was good. Huge serving of pasta that was al dente with very flavorful steak cooked the way I wanted it. Prime sirloin was very tender and really delicious. The crispy honey brussel sprouts was sweet and had a very good texture that really went well with the French onion soup and the steak. Great drinks and good food. I couldn't pass up a Huckleberry Old Fashioned, excellent drink. The steaks were cooked perfectly to medium rare for myself and rare for my son. They service was quick and efficient. The inside of the restaurant was clean and modern with a rustic aesthetic, plenty of seating and room between the tables. My only complaint was with one of the sides, the creamed spinach was at least three quarters cream very little spinach at all. The flavor was great though. Looks to be a fairly new place so they probably have a few kinks to work out. I imagine once they hit their stride it will be a fantastic dining experience. This restaurant presents itself as sophisticated dining, yet what transpires rather quickly is a group of employees working under poor management and no sense of commitment to standards. If you're going to be a steak house, then be a steak house, because clearly, you're not trained to follow through on much outside that box. When a restaurant charges a substantial amount for dining, and they do here, make sure the tables are clean and free of crumbs. The restaurant was not filled to capacity by any means while our party of three dined there. When we opened our silverware, which comes wrapped in a napkin, the utensils are covered in a film of dishwasher residue. Where is management? I could not tell you. In our party, one ordered chicken to be served plain no bun, and steak fries. The chicken is over cooked, the potatoes are short, curled, about 1 inch wide and 2 inches long, one side of which the potato skin remains,..reminding one of animal nails and also not crispy and lacking flavor. Another party ordered the chicken sandwich as is on the menu and unfortunately, dry as well. I ordered two items, Caprese Bruschetta, which is described on the menu at $15.00.Toasted baguette slices topped with cherry tomatoes fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, and drizzled with balsamic dressing. Sounds straightforward and harmless, right? No. That is not what you will receive. The dish is prepared to sit on white bread that is not suited for it even though it was somewhat toasted for the base. Then the cherry tomatoes, for some reason, are placed next, which makes no sense. A layer of mozzarella covers the cherry tomatoes, followed by a dot of pesto in the center. Then they melt the cheese, which also makes no sense. Nowhere on the menu does it even suggest you will receive a melted mess. Yet they managed to make it more unappetizing because they served it to me cold. It was disgusting. I ordered a side of Brussels sprouts, charred well, but riddled with so much syrup that it was heavy and again, not well thought out. I did eat them, since the "bruschetta" was hopeless. The wait time for the above order was ridiculous, and again, not a busy restaurant, and not a manager in sight. When wait staff sees a customer has not eaten their dinner and does not make any effort to correct the experience, you should move on to a different restaurant. I was actually asked if I wanted to take my remains home. lol You may imagine they do beef well, but I suggest you read the reviews carefully on that score too. My suggestion: hire experienced management, adopt a professional attitude, and buy a cookbook on bruschetta. Skip this steer. read more

So considering where we were, in the middle of cattle country, we figured the advertised steak house in town was going to knock it out of the park. We went with a local, a friend. He mentioned the last time he was here the steak was tough, but he was willing to try again. First we'll start with the CON: I ordered the bone-in, daughter got the filet, friend got the strip. Bone-in order: Med Rare. Filet: Med Rare. Strip: Med. To say my Bone-in was Medium would be generous. It was leaning towards Med-Well. Barely even pink, even at the bone. Not a lot of seasoning so had to salt at the table. This might be the first steak I've ever not finished. It just wasn't good. Filet was a solid medium. Light pink, nothing rare about it. Still good quality, though, daughter ate it. Strip was WELL, to the point that as he was cutting through this grey monstrosity, it was turning white it was so dry. There was only one waiter for the entire place. I think they had a callout issue because we, and another party, stood in confusion for a few minutes at the check-in kiosk for several minutes before he peeked out of the kitchen and said he'd be with us shortly. Service was very slow, but I can't put the blame on the waiter, he was the only one there and doing what he could. He apologized. There was a note on the menu saying a gratuity would be added for 6+ people. When we got the bill we could not see it and asked him if it was added after (we didn't want to double-tip for fairness to us, but didn't want to assume and leave him untipped in fairness to him). He said he removed the gratuity because he could not give us good service. Of course we politely told him that was nonsense and he was doing everything he could, so we absolutely added a tip. Last CON: Price. I don't know if they keep these prices year-round or not, but these were absolutely "fleece the tourist" prices. PRO: Two people in our party ordered the smash burgers, and said they were awesome. They got the huge 4-patty one. Moist, good flavor, had to eat with a knife and fork. They said, barring the price, they would eat it again. Last person got the lobster mac. I never eat restaurant mac because it's always overdone and fancied up to the point of being nasty. However, this mac was AMAZING. I don't say that lightly. The cheese was perfectly buttery smooth, but still with consistency (real cheese, not a sauce). Often the cheese is grainy because of how they make it. This was not. Silk. Noodles were just right. Flavors thrown in were perfect. I've never had good mac n cheese and this was great. The lobster was what you'd expect for a land-locked state--nothing special, nothing bad. But man, that mac was spot on. Overall: A steak house, in steak country, ruining steaks is not something to overlook lightly. While all the rest of the food was great, and keeping them from a One-Star, and our poor server busted his BUTT to help all of the tables simultaneously, so he deserves all the kudos. We didn't ask for the steaks to be taken off the bill (we did tell him they were the wrong temp so he could let the cook know to pay attention so they didn't get a ton of angry people). But we won't be going back unless their prices plunge significantly, and if we do, we won't be ordering steaks. It was a $275 lesson we won't soon forget. read more

My friend and I went here on a Saturday night while we were staying in Wall. We arrived around 9 pm and it was still pretty busy but we didn't have to wait to get seated. There is a nice bar area and tables and high tops around the restaurant. It was a nice ambiance! There was a nice selection of local beers and you could get a flight if you wanted. It is always great to see vegetarian options when going to a steakhouse! I got the heifer salad and a side of Mac and cheese (no bacon) and my friend got the deviled eggs and the brussel sprouts and everything was Delicious!!! The salad was also Huge! Worst steak I have ever had. I had the hardest time just cutting it and worst of all trying to chew it. The augratin potatoes were like soup. My wife had the same.
