I wish we could have stayed longer! The stay was as advertised - you are selecting to stay in a (stunning) historic home so the wood squeaks and stairs are required to reach the upper floors. There is a gravel lot for parking, which is convenient since most restaurants and experiences can be walked to in town, helping you avoid the fight for parking. We stayed in the Charter Suite - I only wish it had been cold enough for us to use the working fireplace. That would have added extra charm! Kristi met us as we checked in and provided a warm welcome, even a warm send off by providing us muffins to go for our early flight. My fiancée and I greatly enjoyed our stay and are hopeful to one day return to Bar Harbor and Saltair Inn. read more

This was, hands-down, our favorite place we stayed during our coastal Maine trip! And it was the most reasonably priced for everything Matt and Kristi offer. We stayed on the 3rd floor in the Beehive Suite. It was a bit of a trek going up and down as many times as we did, especially with heavy luggage, but we loved the room and the view!!!! And we never heard a single other guest during our stay. They have a great HVAC system that keeps the third floor very cool. And the bed and pillows were very comfortable. There is a parking space for a car for every room. When we arrived, we got a thorough welcoming from Matt. He showed us on a map some suggestions of where to eat. The inn is an easy walk from the town and about a five minute drive from the entrance to Acadia National Park. We didn't partake in breakfast, but saw many others enjoying it. They have a beautiful deck with plenty of seating, and Adirondack chairs in the yard to enjoy the stars. They keep the lights and music on all night, so no matter when you arrive home, you feel comfortable and safe. The only thing that we missed was access to ice. There is a tiny machine in the breakfast room, but that only makes enough ice for about 3 drinks for the whole place. We had to buy ice at the Circle K every day and keep it in our cooler in the room for our water bottles and cocktails. If you ever travel to Bar Harbor, this is the place to stay!!! Not disgruntled but totally disappointed. Somewhat astonished of the many "10" and "5" positive reviews. We share our review to provide another perspective of the Inn. Having stayed at other B&B's with exceptional service in many of our travels, we booked the Beehive Suite (see website photo attached) as described below: "The two most private waterfront suites of the inn are the only guest rooms located on the third floor. Two flights of stairs is a small price to pay for the commanding view of the bay from these two special suites. The Keurig Machine in the third floor coffee lounge will save you a few steps for your first cup of morning caffeine." Please note that the description reads, "two flights of stairs." What it fails to share with you is that it requires at least 4 very distinct "turns" with several additional 3 to 4 steps up as you walk-up to the room and that all the steps are very narrow and somewhat steep. Although it is on the third floor, getting to the room will require many more steps than your average "straight up" two flights of stairs as stated in the description. Secondly, the photos displayed on the website must have been taken right at the "2014 renovation." The carpet on the website photos (#1 & #2) appears well-kept and nice as opposed to its appearance on May 6, 2013. The carpet is totally flat from foot traffic, somewhat dirty in appearance and on our arrival date, had a "musty" smell. The photos also reflect a room with lots of natural light. Again, do not expect that level of natural light - in reality, it is somewhat "gloomy" in appearance. And yes, the ceilings are not high due to its "complicated roof structure" as described on the website, adding to the claustrophobic feeling once in the room. Lastly, the description of "central air conditioning" is exactly that, central to the entire home and only controlled by two very small vents in the Beehive room. Needless to say we were very disappointed and chose not to stay at the Inn and booked a room at the Bar Harbor Inn. Since we had exceeded the Inn's cancellation date, we were charged the entire 4-night stay as a no show. read more

Building and rooms are in great shape and cared for. Yard and gardens similarly in well-manicured state. Having looked around town during our 5 night stay, we see there's no shortage of places to stay if that's all you're after. But for a really great breakfast meal, very friendly people, the tranquility of a private yard overlooking the water, and easy walking distance into town this is the _only_ place to stay! read more

Quaint perfectly located inn - we enjoyed the Acadia Suite and were delighted by the modern bathroom, fireplaces, and private sitting room. The semi-private balcony (shared with one other suite) was the perfect place to unwind. We hope to snag the first floor Master Suite when we visit next (to see the fall colors). The Master Suite is on the first floor - two other suites are on the second floor. The regular rooms are on the third floor. Obviously there isn't an elevator in this 100 year old Victorian gem. The innkeepers, Matt and Kristy, were helpful and friendly without being intrusive. Kristy is an excellent cook and prepared gourmet breakfasts! You can sit at a table for 8 or select a private table for 2. Acadia National Park is awe inspiring! This Inn is the perfect place to recharge after enjoying the park! read more

Stayed on the 3rd floor beehive room I believe, the walk up the parking lot and the walk up the stairs is challenging, the hosts? ok, THE ROOM had 2 little holes with plugs in them to allow for air and the room was uncomfortable...the room has small windows and shallow ceilings feeling cave like. No ice...just a little countertop machine with 10 tiny ice cubes on 1st floor, breakfast was very good with the back patio overlooking the water. Lynn was very nice and accommodating. The breakfasts in the morning were delicious. Kudos to the chef. The bed we slept in sunk in the middle, it was lumpy and very uncomfortable. The pillows were very uncomfortable as well. My husband and I slept uncomfortably for 2 nights so for that I give it 3 stars. The bad needs to be replaced. I would be embarrassed to have that bed at a B&B. Worst sleep ever. The carpet in the room could be replaced. There was a slight smell of mold in the room & carpet looked old & dirty. They were very cheap on toiletries. The soap bottle was practically empty. You should replenish instead of waiting for customers to ask for more. To sum it up in two words: absolutely lovely. The hosts were gracious, their kids are adorable, the location is perfect and the room was impeccable - the perfect experience for our honeymoon in the Northeast. When we arrived, they upgraded us to a larger suite with a sitting room with a view of the ocean because they had the availability. Sitting in front of the fire, staring out at the water, was cozy and romantic - the stuff romantic movies are made of. It was the icing on the cake for what proved to be a fantastic stay. Matt showed us around the house, explained where everything was, gave us a verbal tour around town, and then left us to enjoy our time in peace. Perfection! Matt and Kristi are absolute gems. My husband and I stayed here for a couple of nights during the "quiet" season (late March), and we couldn't have asked for more. It was such a calm, relaxed atmosphere. When we arrived, Matt gave us the rundown of the house, breakfast, the town, etc. There was free tea 24/7, which was a nice touch. Breakfast in the morning was served at their large dining room table, and both mornings, the breakfasts were OUT OF THIS WORLD - Matt makes some mean blueberry pancakes, and Kristi made some broiled tomatoes and baked pears that were to die for. I'm pregnant, and I swear - I ate eggs for the first time during this whole pregnancy, and they were delicious. Matt had some great suggestions for things to do and places to see while we were in town. Since a lot of things were closed for the season, it was nice to have his help instead of having to search all around town for something that was open. My husband and I went for a drive around the island on our second day there, and Matt lent us a book with some maps, and also gave us a list of places to stop off (Thunder Hole, Sand Beach, etc.) - all were gorgeous. The view from our room was unbeatable; waking up to that huge window overlooking the water was breathtaking. I'm not sure if this is standard for every room in the house, but we actually had TWO rooms (one bedroom and one sitting room), and a private bath. Both rooms had fireplaces, and they had even set up a heater in the bathroom to take the chill off the floor - such a sweet thing to do. The standard shampoos and lotions were even stepped up a notch - they added Saltair lip balm and bath salts! Haven't seen those two things at an inn! As we discovered during our stay, Matt and Kristi are originally from the same area of VA that my husband and I currently live in, AND Matt and my husband both went to the same college. This led to some great breakfast conversations! I was sad to leave when the time came... I could have stayed there forever! I felt like I was leaving behind good friends who had treated me to a weekend in their home... I almost forgot that we had paid to stay there, ha ha! My husband and I would most certainly return over and over and over again. I hope that Matt and Kristi are living out their dream and are as happy and content as they seem to be, because they deserve it! What a charming family and home. Our stay was a treat! read more

What a truly wonderful bed and breakfast. We stayed here from 713 - 7/19 and enjoyed every moment. The location can't be beat - a short walk to the main part of Bar Harbor, but just far enough outside that it is nice and quiet. Ample parking.... amazing location right on the water (awesome views)... huge backyard.... lovely accommodations..... just perfect. Matt and Kristi are perfect hosts - they are knowledgeable of the area, very nice people, and very welcoming. Adorable kids and an even more adorable dog ( for those allergic - the dog does NOT go into the bedrooms, for the most part stays out of guest's ways, we just love dogs so we encouraged petting her!). We were trying to decide hiking trails and Matt took such an interest in helping us plan our day on more than one occasion - he always had a recommendation. Trust him when he advises you on where to eat for lunch or dinner... you won't regret it! Their breakfasts are out of this word. We had a different meal each morning and they were all delish. My two favorites would be the blueberry pancakes and the eggs benedict. YUM!!! Free water, soda, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and little snacks (including homemade treats) available 24/7. We were visiting during a bust tourist season and the Saltair Inn was fully booked. It didn't feel that way at all. It was lovely and we enjoyed a nice stay. We stayed in the Acadia suite which was HUGE - a sitting room, big bedroom and big bathroom. It has a fireplace that I can only imagine how wonderful is during the cooler months. I probably should've rated this B&B a long time ago since my wife an I have been going to Saltair Inn for the past 5 years. I guess I haven't because I like to keep secrets. Well looks like that's not an option anymore. My wife and I have spent the past 10 years traveling throughout Maine (about every couple years or so) and have spent numerous nights in B&Bs. By far the greatest stay is at Saltair Inn. Matt and Kristi provide a service that is second to no one. The location is a 5 minute walk (if that) from downtown Bar Harbor yet when at the Inn you feel like you're at a secluded location. They have a beautiful Inn with nostalgic Victorian features and they create an environment that feels like you're at home. The breakfasts are always wonderfully done with large portions complimented with fresh fruit and creative ideas. The experience is incredible. You will not be disappointed here...well I guess some people might, but they would be wrong! =) read more

Had a wonderful 2 nights at the Saltair Inn - which is a historic mansion! Matt and Kristi were welcoming, knowledgeable, and great hosts! They gave great recommendations (Galyn's for happy hour was our personal favorite) and the breakfast was great (a fruit and hot option every day - we had Stuffed French Toast and Eggs Benedict). There is a big breakfast table by the fire, or three smaller ones looking over the water if you don't want to sit with a group. There are many amenities to make the B&B feel like home - there are mini fridges to store drinks, glasses/bottle openers, and even a Keurig on the 3rd floor so you don't have to walk downstairs to get your first cup of morning coffee. The Saltair is a short walk to Main Street and being on the water was a must! The back yard had chairs for looking out on the harbor and at low tide there is a sand bar to walk to an island that is a part of Acadia National Park. Matt and Kristi did a wonderful job and we will definitely return to the Saltair Inn! read more

A charming, beautiful B&B that sits right on the water. Kristi makes delicious breakfasts, and both she, and her husband, Matt, are excellent hosts. They both know the surroundings extremely well, and provide helpful tips about the town, attractions and happenings in the area. There's also a couple Adirondack-style benches on the far end of the property to relax and watch the tide, while enjoying an afternoon munch with wine and cheese (BYOB & C...). Overall, the B&B's location is ideal for a view of the water, and a leisurely walk to shops/restaurants. Finally, I read some of the negative reviews and couldn't respectfully disagree more - as a gorgeous old, large house, Saltair Inn has many interesting "nooks & crannies", with great stories and history to boot. Matt and Kristi take a lot of pride in their house, and keep property improvements in the pipeline for optimal guest comfort and enjoyment. It's important to recalibrate expectations when staying at a B&B; the uniqueness and individual charm of this type of accommodation makes it unfair, and even difficult to compare "apples to apples" with other B&B's. Moreover, one needs to appreciate the tremendous amount of time, capital, effort, (...and passion) it takes to own and operate a successful B&B. If you want blackout curtains to ensure a better midday slumber or sleeping-in in the morning, a proper front desk with an attendant waiting at check-in, or a larger breakfast space with more desirable seating options, your lodging expectations would really be best suited for a proper hotel. If you desire a hospitable, comfortable, clean, family-run accommodation where things are charmingly un-perfect, Saltair Inn is for you. Happily in life, we all have a choice... Three excellent nights with 16 family members in town for a Bar Harbor wedding. We rented the whole place. The rooms were private and comfortable. The common spaces were great for everyone to gather. The breakfasts were excellent. Out the back there was a view of the water with Bar Island to the right and the sand bar to walk to it easily accessible from the back of the long green lawn leading to the sea wall. Ample parking was available right next to the large well kept old home. Each room had a fireplace and many had balconies. Great location to walk to anything from the front door right on the main waterfront street of Bar Harbor. The hosts and their family were excellent and even arranged for baby sitting while we were at wedding events at the historical society and few doors down and in town on other days. Where do I begin? This was my third visit in the past 6 months and it is an amazing experience. The inn is clean, friendly and feels like home. Matt and Kristi were wonderful hosts! This is THE best B&B that we have ever visited. Below are some excerpts from our travel journal: We headed to the B&B, the Saltair Inn, 121 West Street. It is a stately looking building in a great location (central and on the water). A man on a tractor came to immediately great us an introduced himself as Matt, one of the owners. He was very personable. He took us inside to show us around and gave us some history on his family's life and the Inn which was built in the late 1800's. They were originally from Virginia and have been here for four years with their very cute kids, two girls Katie and Emily and a boy Adam (ages 2, 4 and 7 - I think). Matt was a structural engineer and Kristi worked for the FBI in DNA/forensics. At one time Matt's parents owned the inn next door, Matt and Kristi visited and fell in love with the area. In total they have five guest rooms. They currently live in the basement but are working on redoing the 3rd floor for their family. They did a fabulous job refurbishing the place. Our oversized room (Master Suite) is on the first floor with giant floor to ceiling picture windows that open to incredible views of a stately lawn and the ocean. It is nicely decorated, has a huge tub and large standup shower in an equally oversized bathroom. Large, thick towels too. There is a large sitting room with comfy chairs looking out to the ocean, a gas stove, fireplace and a 4 poster very comfy king size bed (great pillows!). Classical music was playing from a small portable stereo system, a nice touch. We were very happy with our choice. They have plenty of guidebooks, maps, DVDs, books and games. They offer free drinks, snacks, tea and coffee and a big plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies was on the dining room table, and Hershey's candy in the front hall. Matt offered to help us with restaurants, hikes and other activities. We headed to our room to lie down "just for a minute". We both passed out cold for two hours. When we awoke we headed out to the dining area where we met Matt's wife Kristi who was equally as personable. She offered us a glass of wine (after a tour of her incredible gourmet kitchen). We chatted with her and Matt for awhile. They are really nice down to earth people. We enjoyed their company. Morning 1: We had a really great breakfast. We had warm apple muffins, fresh fruit, thick slabs of bacon and homemade blueberry pancakes. She also served us real maple cream that a previous guest had given as a gift (tasted like frosting). We chatted with Kristi and Matt for a bit and they helped us to select a hike and then lent us a guidebook and a great map. ....On the way out to dinner I grabbed a few of Kristi's homemade cookies. Today we had the choice of chocolate chip or butterscotch. I used to love butterscotch cookies as a kid and haven't had one in years. It was so wonderful that I had to go back for seconds. Morning 2: Breakfast this morning was really outstanding! We had a cinnamon, blueberry, apple crisp to start and then a goat cheese and spinach quiche with a side of tomato/mozzarella/basil salad and homemade scones. We met another nice couple from Lexington, MA. We chatted again with Kristi and Matt and then headed off on our next adventure. ...We grabbed some of Kristi's cherry cobbler (really, really good!) and headed down to sit by the ocean (they have Adirondack chairs at the edge of the lawn). John smoked a cigar, we shared some wine and enjoyed the view. It was a perfect evening. Morning 3: Full house this morning of 10 guests and another really, really great breakfast. First a cinnamon apple cake, a red, white and blue parfait (strawberries, blueberries, yogurt and granola) then baked french toast with pear and brie compote and some thick cut bacon. I told Kristi that she needs to write a cookbook!! ....I had one of Kristi's 4th of July fudgy brownies with red, white & blue frosting (really yummy) and chatted with Matt a bit. John vegged a bit, taking in the view. We can see Bar Island from our window. It was low tide so you can walk over, at high tide you can't walk over... Morning 4: We awoke to a really beautiful day, no fog. At 7 we headed out for a walk - we started down the shore path and returned via Main Street. It was a beautiful morning. We returned to the Inn and sat on the back deck with our coffee enjoying the view. Soon other guests started to arrive and after chatting for a bit we sat down to another (and sadly our last) wonderful breakfast. This morning we had a fruit crisp, then eggs benedict with asparagus wrapped in phillo. After breakfast we packed, chatted with Kristi & Matt for a long time and then checked out. John bought a coffee cup. I asked to buy a Christmas ornament. They insisted that we take it as a gift from them. When we got home, we found it nicely inscribed for our first anniversary. read more

If you can stay at a Bed and Breakfast in Bar Harbor, ME then book in advance for this place. We stayed Oct 17 for our honeymoon and was lucky enough to snag their last room open until late Nov. We had the "smallest" and newest room and it was comfortable and lovely but not only that, breakfast was delicious (Eggs Benedict can't go wrong) but Kristi would've made whatever you wanted. Coffee was perfect and we took our cups after breakfast and walked out their deck and onto the beach to watch the tide roll in! Just breathtaking! The owners set the tone from the moment you book your getaway with a sweet email to greeting you upon arrival as if you've returned to see friends from 20 years ago. You are welcome here and they are gracious, helpful, hilarious and a perfect team. My husband and I stayed for two nights in late April and met wonderful people from WA state who ran the Boston Marathon, a nice couple from Tennessee and another from Canada. The dining room allows you a friendly experience of talking with new friends about their adventures and suggestions while enjoying some seriously good home cooking. As part our unplanned road trip through Coastal Maine, we arrived in Bar Harbour with no reservation. After wandering through side streets and seeing over probably 50+ inns, we checked out the Saltair and fell in love with it's sloping lawn toward the water and the homey reception from Matt, the owner. We signed up and proceeded to walk down the shore and just take in the fantastic views from this place. Bar Harbour can be a bit overwhelming with all the tourists, but staying at a place like this makes it the experience you imagine..serene and old world. The innkeepers , Matt and Christi were extremely attentive, genuinely interested and just people we would like as friends. Young and enthusiastic about the area, they clearly chose this life because they love the town. Their beautiful kids pop in to say hello periodically and made us realize this is a real home. The morning breakfast experience was communal (not sure if by design or by chance) but I chatted with some extremely nice guests and Matt and Christi hovered and gave us advice on the day's activities. Only thing to note, is not to take dining advice from the hosts as the restaurant we were advised to have dinner at was simply not good. Bar Harbour is crowded with eating establishments, and I suspect many are targeting tourists and just not long term oriented. Besides that very minor point, they were awesome and we hope to see Fall colors and visit them again. read more

Immaculate, classic Inn with lots of character. Owners Kristi and Matt were wonderful and welcoming hosts. They went out of their way to be available to help any way possible and for any questions their guests had about the area including incredible Acadia National Park. The breakfasts and home made snacks prepared by Kristi were as good as it gets anywhere! We were there following the 2014 Boston Marathon to relax and that is what we did. We had the pleasure of staying at the Saltair Inn a few weeks ago. We stayed in the Master Suite which is definitely worth paying up for. The room is HUGE with beautiful views of Bar Island, which the Inn is directly across from. You can walk across the sandbar to the island at low tide. The suite has 2 fireplaces, a nice livingroom area, and a huge whirlpool bathtub. Kristi and Matt were very helpful in giving us information on activities, not to mention Kristi is a wonderful cook. We really enjoyed the desserts she left for guests late night on the table after coming back from dinner. She also cooks breakfast for all the guests between 8-9am. Bar Harbor town is a 5min walk from the Inn so you get the privacy of being a few blocks out of town but also have everything right at your doorstep. We would highly recommend Saltair Inn and hope to be back this fall or next year! read more

Fantastic bed and breakfast. Breathtaking views of the water from this oceanside house. Rooms are large, clean, and modern without feeling like at all like a hotel. For Bar Harbor, the price was very reasonable. Matt and Krisit were extremely friendly and had wonderful recommendations for place to go and eat. The B&B is in walking distance to everything in town and only a mile from Acadia. We really parked our car when we got there and simply walked to dinners, took the free shuttle to the park, and strolled out to Bar Island at low tide from the backyard of the house. A true delight! We were also very pleased that Matt and Kristi graciously accommodated dietary restrictions without batting an eye. read more
