What is there not to say about this place. Every class is such a good time. I've been coming here for several months now and it has been such an amazing experience. Molly and Joseph are amazing instructors and are so patient with us. It's been so fun learning a new dance style and meeting new people while doing so. I've been meaning to write a better review for this place. It has been very meaningful for me and I know many people. I lost a lot a few years ago due to chronic health issues one of which affected my nervous system for years. In the past being unaware, I would try to go to dance but brain issues prevented me from being fully present in it, and finally I gave up when it got worse. As I found out my issues, I began healing and decided to return to dancing as a way to continue that. And now, as my body has started to regained health I can finally enjoy it. Previously wrote a 5-star review of what I consider to be my home studio for over 10 years, and am disappointed that I have to weigh in now. I immediately and eagerly returned as pandemic rules eased, and have been consistently disappointed since. Unfortunately this has nothing to do with the quality of instruction: It's second to none really. It's the front desk staff. Previously the front desk staff were patient and helpful. Now they are bullying, unhelpful, and dismissive. They consistently treat me like a criminal, like I'm trying to rip them off for free dance classes. I expect to get paid for my work, and expect to pay for services received, but sometimes I need to know why I'm being asked to pay again when I already did so. It's like the "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld: If a product or service is good enough one doesn't have to be polite or can be downright rude. My attendance has declined sharply because I use dance for recreation, socializing, exercise, and fun. If I'm made to feel unwelcome there are so many other places I can go to get the exact same thing and not have to go through the disrespect. Just not worth it. ****EDIT**** I am revising this post for the following reasons: 1) This review is getting a lot of traction, and I DON'T want to give the wrong idea; You can't throw out the baby with the bath water. Since my post-pandemic return I've had some less than pleasant interactions with new staff, the which of like I have never experienced before. This was unsettling for me, and made me anxious every time I attended. Dance is my outlet, a space where I look to recover and decompress, and I cannot accept feeling any less. 2) This school really cares about their clientele; you will note the owner himself responded to this post, and the manager, Cindy, approached me in person to find out if it was she who was rude to me (it was not: Cindy has always been nothing but respectful, kind, and friendly to me). She was also interested in knowing who made me uncomfortable or unhappy. Most successful businesses are not particularly interested in one unhappy customer. This studio is one of the best in New York, and have new clientele everyday- losing 1 will have zero impact on their bottom line. But these people care. 3. The dance instruction here is superb. The instructors are epic, and your dance is guaranteed to go next-level. They will get you to goal, whether to be a proficient social dancer, performer, or even teacher. So, although I was going to amend this review to 4-stars, I'm going back to 5, because I believe in & support this business. read more

I have been taking salsa classes at Salsa Salsa Dance Studio studio since September. I wouldn't necessarily describe myself as a person with "two left feet" as dancing has been a passion of mine ever since I could put one foot in front of the other, however, I'd never taken Salsa before and wondered how I'd fare. Three months in and I'm spinning, whirling, twirling, styling and jiving at the socials and weekly events. It's addicting. Salsa Salsa has become a second home, an extended family and the highlight of my week. I just can't get enough. I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm visiting NY for the weekend and decided to check out a class here. I accidentally attended an intermediate class when I meant to go to the beginner class. They let me sit in and watch the intermediate class before starting the beginner class. Everyone was very nice and the instructor was great. He knows so much about salsa, but always does a great job of walking the class through each move. Also, it's only $20 for a two hour class. Much better prices compared to the studios in Manhattan. I'll definitely be back here next time I'm in NY! read more

I hadn't danced Salsa in a long time, and by a long time I mean years, so I decided to check out this studio for their Thursday beginners salsa class 8:30-10 PM, and I had a blast! I actually got there late, and it was quite easy to catch up since the instructors repeated the steps several times. Even though, the class was pretty packed, they would intermittently have students swap rows to be up front and center with the instructors. Not to mention, there are intermediate/advance Salsa students, who attend the beginner classes for practice and they are quick to help you out if you mess up a step or two or give you tips on your technique. To say the least, I had fun. Now all I need is some actual dance shoes. I will definitely be returning!!! read more

I'm a lil bias when it comes to this place b/c my favorite salsero is one of the owners here. My 1st & only salsa instructor for about 2yrs Marcus Gonzalez has the best salsa studio ever!! This place is all about fun while teaching one of the best dances EVER! If you have never danced a day in your life you will still enjoy it, they will help you through every step. Or If you're like myself and came out the womb doing a lil jig they have advance classes that will keep you excited and moving. I haven't been in classes due to that thing we all sometimes have to do ..WORK, but any chance I get to squeeze in a class I'm so here. I started taking lessons at this studio about two years ago. As of now, it is one of the best decisions I ever made. I like to take new risks, and try to expand out of my comfort zone. Something came over me to try dancing. I took my first classes here with the founders of the studio, Marcus and Jose, who have taught me so much, and who do so much for the community. Just like someone mentioned in a previous post, you will eventually gain multiple cousins! The people here do come from all walks of life, and they all enjoy dancing. I LOVE THIS DANCE STUDIO!!! I've gone to their socials in Willoughby and I loved it - so decided to come take a class. I moved out of Astoria to NJ and literally drove my butt one hour and a half hours to come here and I don't regret a thing. If you're in the area definitely check this place out. Their prices are cheaper than most + the quality of the class is superb. The teachers have patience and the students were all pretty cool/down to earth. I have only started coming here but the the instructors are really top notch & are great teachers. Coming from a dance background have come across a bunch of different teaching styles they really care that each student gets the dance properly. I look forward to each wk going to class it's a lot of fun & everyone in class has great energy. I have not kept up any gym membership but this is nothing like that and actually really enjoy it. Love these guys. Teachers are patient and knowledgeable, prices are fair, atmosphere is chill. They make Salsa very accessible. My fiancée and I both started from absolute scratch. Started doing weekly group classes with Andy in January. Intro offer + New Year's Resolution crowd = first 1 or 2 classes were uncomfortably packed...but by week 3 and beyond, there was plenty of space. By only our 5th or 6th lesson, we started to actually be able to *dance*. Not just repeat choreography, but get into it with some spontaneity. That was right about when coronavirus shut everything down. But we wanted to keep it up, so we've started taking virtual classes (via Zoom) with Marcus and Chrissy. Tremendously helpful. They're super nice and they know their shit. Strongly recommend checking them out, even/especially for virtual lessons. This place deserves to stay open, and we're really hoping it'll still be there once everything goes back to normal. read more

Being that I've never taken a dance lesson before, let alone dance salsa much, I was a bit apprehensive, nervous, and a bit uncomfortable before attending my first class. I must say, getting into it, there can't be a better start into something that's out of your element as it was mine. I was made to feel comfortable being out of my comfort zone, learning things slowly, step by step. Nothing was rushed, and for a beginners class, that's what you hope for, not being overwhelmed with info. Jose and Sasha made my first class very enjoyable, easy, and the way it was structured, I can't say anything negative at all. They did have us switch dance partners, which I was at first a little uncomfortable with, but as they put it, it's good to learn how other people move, as each dance partner does move differently. Great way to break the ice with tour fellow class mates, fellow locals, and perhaps future friends. All in all, fantastic experience, and I look forward to more classes. read more

I've been going here for about 8 months, however, my main Salsa studio is Mambo-D in midtown Manhattan. I come here twice a week because it's close to where I live and it's good practice. Classes are 2 hours, with the 1st hour devoted to "shines" and the 2nd hour devoted to partnerwork. Male/female ratio is usually good. When it does tip towards more men or women, it's only by a small amount. If you look down the Yelp page, you'll see filtered reviews which usually indicate bogus accounts were used to artificially inflate a business's rating. HOWEVER THIS IS WRONG. The filtered reviews are NOT bogus. I am friends with two people whose reviews were filtered and verified they were not bogus reviews. I reported the falsely filtered reviews to Yelp, but Yelp isn't un-filtering them. Boo! The biggest problem is the class size. I'd say that *most* of the bad things I have to say about this studio are related to the huge classes. Given the room size, they ought to have a hard max of 35 people, as in, if a 36th student walks in, they should apologize and say that the class is full. At 30, you're cramped and searching for a spot to dance. I've seen a class with 40+ people, and that was intolerable. Another problem is the heat, which is related to class size. When it's 80F and humid, a room with 35 dancers is going to get very uncomfortable. The fan is an absolute blessing and they *should* have another one installed! They just installed central A/C and we're going to be experiencing it for the first time today; we'll see how well it works! I've had 4 instructors: Joseph, Kelly, Noel and Andy. Joseph, Kelly, and Noel are great instructors. Joseph and Kelly always ask the class if there's anything people want to review. Because the classes are over-full, they can't look at individuals too closely, however, if they notice that the class is screwing something up they'll stop the class and say "Hey, guys! We need to review that!". Music starts off slow and picks up in the first hour. Occasionally I thought the music played was inappropriately fast for a learning environment. Kelly sometimes plays "new" Salsa, which I find not conducive for dancing (and not conducive for listening, either). One comment for Andy: There is no need to play an hour's worth of fast Salsa songs for a beginner's class. It is counter-productive for your students. Your class needs to be working on their "body movement memory" and making their dancing "tight". Practice. Repetition. Perfection. You can't work on that if all you ever do is dance at 190+ bpm. This is Salsa dancing, not a weight loss class. Yes, one or two fast songs are helpful to impress on newbies that fast music means taking small steps. But an hour's worth? Not necessary and not fun. Instruction is done slowly with an emphasis on repetition, so even if you're a "dancing dummy" like I used to be, you will almost certainly do well here. Anybody can learn Salsa here, guaranteed. Another strength of Salsa Salsa is the structured learning environment. They have a syllabus of shines posted in front of the room, and a list of turn patterns in the back. These lists are available on the school's website so you can track your progress and practice at home. Nice touch. Yet another strength of Salsa Salsa is that it's fun (except Andy's class). The atmosphere is laid back and mostly friendly. There are a few bad eggs, but you can't hold Salsa Salsa accountable for a few people who don't smile or act friendly. The majority of people are wonderful, and I've made some great friends here. I wish Salsa Salsa focused a bit more on individual dance style, but again, this is difficult in group classes, and would be impossible because of the class size. While you'll learn to dance a competent Salsa dance quickly, I noticed that people tend to look similar. Women tend to over-style, men tend to not style at all. Instruction tends towards one size fits all and as far as I can tell, they don't active discourage the mindset that there's a right and wrong way of doing things, and if you're wrong, you must stop dancing and do over. There are bi-monthly socials which unfortunately tend to be a tad over-crowded. In summary, I think this is a fantastic quick-and-dirty way to get onto the dance floor in record time. This dance studio is light-years better than, say, Eddie Torres' studio, however, there is room for improvement, and if the owner addresses this, Salsa Salsa has all the elements of being a top notch studio. read more

Okay, but anyway, been going here for about a year now and frankly, everyone here is just AWESOME. The instructors are incredible dancers and teachers, the students are friendly and eager to learn, and the *free* socials are alwayssssss poppin'. This place is also made for all levels of dancers. For newbies, instructors will break down every step and for advanced students, they'll have special workshops (like ladies styling) and instructors will create their own turn patterns. Yay! Total scam. We were interested in taking classes here for our wedding. We were SO sold on this studio based on their reviews and location that we were ready to go all-in on one of their most expensive class packages before even trying it out. Luckily cooler heads prevailed, and we decided it was best to sign up for a one-off to test it out first. The first thing that felt off was the "front desk". I had a couple of questions about their wedding package, so I called one random weekday morning. Nobody answered. I called again throughout the day. No dice. Last week, I decided to try again. This time I was able to reach someone who was, frankly, quite rude. I told her I just had a couple of questions, she told me quite bluntly that she could not help me and that I'd have to check the website. Hey - maybe she was new and cranky? I asked her to make a reservation for a test class anyway, and she told me the only way to do it was online, that they didn't do reservations over the phone. I've been to quite a few dance studios around the city and that was certainly a first. I suppose that should have been a red flag. I went ahead and made the reservation through Mindbody Online (felt legit enough - other studios use them.) They seem to have a LOT of instructor availability for private lessons on the weekend when other studios we'd inquired at had informed us that those times fly and that we'd have to book much farther in advance to get a spot. If I had thought about it a little longer, it might have dawned on me that maybe there was a reason their books were wide open just a couple of days in advance. Anyway I booked it. I chose Jose because he has great reviews here and I figured what better way to learn than from the owner! We got an automatic confirmation email, and 24 hrs before the class Mindbody sent me a reminder text to confirm, which I responded to. Fast forward to this morning: We show up 5 minutes early as instructed to in our confirmation email. The studio is...small, kinda dingy and dark, but the mirrors and floors are in good shape and I guess that's all that matters. Side note: there is a large analog clock hanging from one of the walls that is running 5-8 minutes fast. I wondered at the time if that was intentional. It's certainly...unorthodox. It made me wonder how long the classes actually last. The "front desk" I referred to earlier is actually just a 3x3 space in the corner of the large (and apparently only) classroom. There was nobody working it, which I also found incongruous to my experience at other studios. There was a young lady in the room, whom I can only presume now is an instructor. We introduced ourselves to her and told her we were excited about our first class. She looked confused and asked us what time the class was scheduled for. When I told her,she literally said "Uh-oh" and started texting on her phone. We told her the class was with Jose. She told us to hang out on a bench and said she'd straighten it out. At this point, we're not really sure what's wrong, but maybe Jose is running a little late? Then another dude shows up. At first I wonder if he's Jose, but he won't meet our gaze. The young lady greets him warmly before returning to us. She tells us she has no idea where Jose is. I ask her what the plan is, and she says she doesn't know, but she's got to teach her class. So not only was our teacher missing, apparently the studio had two "private" classes booked for the same time. No idea if that's their usual MO or not. Also: What does it say about your business when even THE OWNER doesn't bother to show up for work? The instructor is nice, but clearly wants to get us out of the way so she can teach her student. I asked her about what we should do, and about getting a refund since, at this point, I'm thinking this might not be the place for us. She told me to call reception at noon and they'd sort it out (Apparently, that's when they get in. Must be nice!) I was hesitant about leaving without my refund, but I did. I call at noon and no one picks up again. I fiddle around with their nonsensical phone menu until I get someone on the phone. I explain what happened, she yells through the music blaring in the background (maybe an office INSIDE a dance classroom is not the best idea) that she's taken my info and she's going to process the cancellation. I thank her and I wait for the confirmation email. Nothing. I check Mindbody and not only has our money not been refunded, according to them we were NO-SHOWS! Needless to say, it's a scam: if you're lucky enough to figure out how to even book a class your teacher will probably not show up and keep your money anyway. What a stupid way to lose new customers, especially since we were already so eager to buy their ridiculously priced packages! I literally signed up for Yelp just to warn people. Book at your own peril. read more

Classes do get packed and it can get really hot, but you're there to sweat anyway. It's not as structured as other salsa schools but it's definitely not ghetto. This is a wonderfully friendly, welcoming place, with teachers who have a passion for dance, and enjoy sharing that expertise with their students. I wanted to love this beginner class my boyfriend and I took but it was really impossible. One of the owners spent 20 minutes of our two hour class convincing us to buy more classes and stick with the studio for a few months. This extended sales pitch led to the class starting at least 20 minutes late. We just wanted to dance! There was very low energy from the instructor, lots of talking and corny jokes. We weren't even impressed by the instructors' dancing. (And, jeans and sneakers???) I want to be inspired by my dance teachers - even at a beginner class! read more

This is the best part of my week. It's a little hot and crowded in the studio but isn't that how it should be?! Instructors are amazing at breaking it down for novices but keeping the pace up for practicing pros in both beginner and intermediate classes. You can tell that all of the instructors are skilled and learn from each other. I've taken a few of the ladies styling classes here and really enjoyed them. The girl that teaches them (I can't remember her name) is very friendly, a great dancer (of course!) and an excellent teacher. She does a great job breaking down the steps and building confidence. I've been to a number of the free Friday salsa socials, and they can be fun, but it gets SUPER crowded (and hot!) and it's mostly students and beginner dancers so it's not the best place if you are an intermediate/advanced dancer and looking for other dancers at your level. read more

I and my friends enjoyed jumping into a beginners salsa class that started back in February. We all were a bit lost trying to follow on. Overall we had a nice time and experienced something new. We bought a walk-in gift certificate for my sister and her husband for her birthday and surprised them to go learn a little salsa dancing. They both love to dance but have two young girls they hardly get out alone. When they showed up to walk into a class (even though it was for beginners;and all they wanted was to have fun), the instructor says "you probably won't have a good time because you ll just be lost." I appreciate them try to ensure they're satisfied but how about being a little encouraging rather than "you're not gonna have a good time." Totally discouraging and a waste of money. And for good measure - Completely ruined the surprise party we were planning her too (just need her out of the house for a couple hours. Will never refer anyone to go here again. read more

As a complete newbie to the world of Salsa dancing (well, dancing in general) I decided it was time to take the plunge and sign up for lessons. I dragged a girlfriend of mine to the first class five weeks ago and we've been hooked ever since. The studio is always very clean and the staff is super friendly. Our instructor, Andy, is fantastic; very patient and helpful. His classes are fun, upbeat, and he always makes sure that everyone in the class is right on track.
