The Nutcracker performance that the children dance in is such a special opportunity for them to experience dancing at a professional level with NY City Ballet performers and it's truly a magical show. You also really couldn't ask for more friendly staff on the phone. The staff are equally friendly in person...when they're at their desk, that is. During my first visit, I went to the wrong floor to check in. The gentleman was so honestly nice about redirecting me and ensuring that I would be taken care of well on the proper floor. When I arrived on said floor, 15 minutes before my rehearsal was scheduled to start, no one was there. I waited for 5 minutes. Still, no one. I waited a little longer. No one. So I went back to the original floor I was on. The gentleman was very nice and helped me with my reservation. Unfortunately, since I was on the wrong floor and had to do starter paperwork, the delay of having no on at the desk on the other floor made me late for my rehearsal. They also only email you a receipt....which is a bit inconvenient if you're dealing with the financial end of a company that wants hard copy receipts. It's even more inconvenient when there's no receipt waiting for you when you check your email, and have to call the next day to have it resent. The a/c was also only working in the hallways, not in the rehearsal room, even though they clearly state that all studios are air-conditioned. Fortunately, we were rehearsing after the heat wave, and the fan they provided made the room bearable. Had it been on a hotter day of the year, we would have had an issue. On the plus side, and even though it took a hot (hehe ;-) second for requests to be fulfilled, they did their best to get us the music stands and other things we needed for our rehearsal. The space was quite large and clean. The piano ws in tune, even if it did slide at times while being played. There was no trash can in the room. But that is being nit-picky. One really annoying thing for a music rehearsal was a fairly consistent high-pitched noise that seemed to be coming from the pipes. I know they can't control that. It just made singing complicated music that much more complicated. The only time I was thoroughly unhappy was when their desk staff asked my Stage Manager to return the stands we were using to another floor for them. I was aggravated because I was paying for a service and to use the space/equipment; not to have to haul around the equipment we were renting. I've never encountered that before. It put me off quite a bit. But the waiting area is quite nice and comfortable. Actually one of the best in the city. So major plus there. All in all, we will continue to rent from them since they are so nice, the space is clean, the "meh" aspects are dealable, and I have yet to find a better 501(c)3 discount. If we weren't getting the discount, I'd probably pay a little more for a studio in a more central location with more consistency in delivering the amenities they advertise. But the kids who work here are nice, and it's worth giving them a shot to see if they meet your needs and standards.

I was told the contract process would take time and was asked to wait until February. In March, I finally received available dates and selected one. I was informed in early March that they would follow up with me soon with a contract and then radio silence Nothing!!!! Never got a contract, nothing. I looked for another space and found something with very professional poeple who responded within hours, and contracts were done in a few days- that's how you do business, not at MMAC. Despite following up by email several times, I did not receive a response. By early April, I had given up and missed the opportunity to book the space for May. Based on this experience, I recommend considering other venues, as they do not appear interested in working with potential clients.

The management team is hard to reach and barely responds, one of the managers for programming actually flat out lies, and the teacher does not have the right engagement/interest/knowledge to how to teach young kids. Almost every class we attended started 5-10 minute late and ended early (and they blamed needing to wait for all kids to line up to go to the classroom.... Pretty dumb excuse to delay a start. I think it's because the teacher doesn't have the right strategy to teach. Put on a tutu with other kids, throw on some nursery music, build an obstacle and apparently that can be called a 'dance' class.

Battery has been around for years, and their studio space feels like a "downtown" dance staple…read more They've maintained pretty steady rates over time, and both spaces are well-sized as Manhattan rehearsal space goes (unless you're doing Broadway I guess). Their current studio manager is very prompt and organized booking space as well as responding to other inquiries. Sometimes the floors are dirty, and the endless stair climb to get there is usually more taxing than the 3-hour rehearsal to come but the space is otherwise dependable. Both studios can play CDs or Ipods, and I believe there is a TV/DVD player available if you ask ahead. There is not full-time reception staff, so you have to be the responsible key-carrying renter if you use the space outside office hours. They've recently installed a vending machine with a surprisingly healthy array of picky-dancer snacks (read: high protein non-junk food with plenty of options for every dietary restriction). I would caution anyone doing risque or scantily clad work here - both studios have huge windows looking out at a high-rise apartment building and the staff have offices on the far side of one space so they walk through both studios with a kind of "open-door" policy.

They were extremely welcoming and were very helpful identifying the right level for our daughter. We are now regular members and our daughter has made friends with the other students. We continue to be impressed by the quality of the instruction and the dediction of the staff. It's an easy trip on the subway out to Brooklyn.

Even when a few of the children began to become distracted, our instructor managed to ramp up the interest level with ribbons and participatory exercises. Getting just one kid to pay attention is a big enough challenge, so I was in awe to see what a pro could do. Immediately, we felt like we had been welcomed into a little community. All the staff members we encountered were friendly and helpful, which I especially appreciate in such a chaotic situation as a herd of families arriving and a little bewildered. My only wish is that the space were larger, but otherwise this is a wonderful neighborhood dance school. Well done!

I've been extremely pleased with both the adult and the children's classes/programs. My three year old has loads of fun in her afterschool program with ballet, tap and hip hop. I enjoy adult ballet and modern. I've only been in classes a few months but I've improved tremendously due to the supportive friendly environment. No more knee pain! Adult classes are truly a bargain taught by current and former professionals, the owner Lakey was with Alvin Ailey. You get a ton of personal attention and the routines are modified to your abilities.

I attended the play The Dutch Masters at this venue on May 24, 2025. So, this review is both for…read morethe play and the venue. First let's talk about the play. Any play involving only two actors are tough. On a stage with multiple actors, the audience has multiple subjects to process. Any imperfection could be hidden among the actors but not with two actors. Having said that, it was an awesome performance by the actors. The story took place on the D train leaving Rockefeller Center going uptown (in 1992 New York according to the synopsis). Written by Greg Keller and directed by Calvin Atkinson, Isaiah Brown portrayed Eric a tall black young man who had a chance encounter with Steve, a white bookish young man played by Eoghan O'Casey. Eric started a conversation, but Steve appears nervous and uncomfortable. After all, they were in a closed environment and as any New Yorker, unexpected encounter or someone who pushed their way into someone's personal space is always suspect. What does Eric want from him? Steve was extremely nervous thinking he is about to get robbed but was surprised that Eric seems to know a lot about him. Steve was scared when coerced by Eric to get off the train at 145th Street to buy some marijuana to smoke in a park. They took turn smoking and Steve was clearly getting high. Eric studied a cigar ring apparently on the loaded cigar which he bought. Eric looked at the cigar ring and mumbled Dutch Masters --which for Eric was interpreted as the slave masters but for Steve it was interpreted as the Dutch paint masters (like Vermeer and Rembrandt). It brings up two awkward different worlds for Steve and Eric. Steve still scared followed Eric to his apartment. And here is where the plot thickens. Without spoiling the plot for others, the ending plot was a surprise and explained how Eric knows so much about Steve. Both actors performed admirably well. Isaiah Brown was very strong in portraying a young man dealing with inner turmoil and a complicated childhood. Eoghan O'Casey was believable as a nervous white young man. All in all, both actors were excellent. The lighting and sound effects are appreciated with authentic PA announcement as the train pull in and out the stations and the door chime as the door closes. A five stars from me on the play. As far as the venue, it was a nice, clean, intimate and cozy environment at a prime location. Uniquely white in decor which made the actors and props stand out. It was a little hard having to climb stairs to the third floor with my bad knee, but this is the building fault and not the venue itself. The building apparently is not very well maintained since the elevator was out and the sink in the bathroom has no water. You might say that's a harsh review for a broken elevator but if you look at other plays, as early as Tuesday May 20 to all the way to June 1st, they all have the notation that the elevator is under repair. That's over twelve days of a non-working elevator. The building was either not serious about getting it repaired or lack of care about an important equipment to comply with the Federal ADA rules. While I would give five stars for the venue/studio, the building only deserves a two star. At the end of the day, a pleasant experience and an excellent must-see play.

The performance…read morespace is small and the seats weren't comfortable, but the play was *terrific*; not only did all four actors give wonderful performances, but the writing was also really great. There was lots of humor, and also some seriousness underlying everything. Performances will continue through February 25. As an aside, the (small) waiting area was rather attractive and a friendly woman worked at the concession stand.
