Sals burger and sweet potato fries
Luis S.

What stood out to me about this place was the freshness of the meat. This burger spot prides itself on serving halal beef and chicken, and you can definitely taste the difference. The restaurant is a little small and run by a friendly gentleman. They were getting a good amount of DoorDash orders while I was there, which is always a good sign. I tried the Sal Burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was cooked well, and the meat tasted fresh and flavorful. I wanted to order a second patty! The fries were also crispy and tasty. Yes, the prices may be a little high, but the quality of the meat and burgers makes up for it. Next time, I'll probably try one of the chicken sandwiches.

$15-18 per burger, I would give the patty melt 3 stars but my partner gives it 4 out of 5 stars. The onion rings were impressive, though, the cashier said they were made in-house and I'd believe that (especially because I saw a 50lb bag of onions in the hallway ). The employees were very friendly (encouraged our big group to move tables around, etc) and the vibes were family-owned business. I might to go back to try other burger(s) but the location is a bit out of my way, and at the $17/burger price point, there are plenty of other places in San Mateo I can try or return to.

We stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday evening. It was a little slow, but our food came out quickly and was excellent. We got a burger, a chicken sandwich fries and a shake. It was all excellent. The buns were really good. The meat was perfect. Not greasy or overcooked. Service was also very good. We will be back.

1st time at Sal's burger. My daughter and I ordered the same burger with different sides and both had the chocolate milk shakes, everything was amazing. The burger was charbroiled and hand formed and it had bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions & their sauce all these fresh ingredients combined well, it was cooked perfectly and very juicy. We loved them! The fries were thin and crispy. The onion rings were bread and also crispy, both good, their milk shakes were creamy and brought back childhood memories, it was nostalgic. The locale was busy, clean and decorated in good taste. The tables were bussed rapidly and Sal himself was at the front of the establishment, something that I believe is very important to me. When the owner is present it shows pride of ownership and this is awesome, he was very friendly and when we asked for suggestions he was forthcoming with his favorite. I highly recommend you come enjoy a meal, you won't regret it. The pictures do not do the food justice, but it was worth it. We will definitely return and try their other menu items.

This is one of those places where you walk in and know the food is going to be good! Its a small business where the burgers are made to order and the staff is so kind! For sides we did onion rings and garlic fries and we have no notes. Both were warm and crispy. The garlic fries were the perfect amount of garlic and the parmesan cheese on them paired perfectly. I got the All American burger and it was a well made classic burger. Patty has a great flavor to it and didn't taste at all greasy! Would definitely recommend trying if you are in the area!!

Went to this place for the first time last week and the Sal's burger was a decent burger. The only thing I would add is Mayo. Can't go wrong with Mayo just because it makes your burger more juicy. I did minus their sauce just because I'm not a cheesy kinda person. I would definitely be coming back to have some more sweet potatoes fries. Their fries taste like they add cinnamon and that just gives it a different kind a twist. Highly recommend their garlic fries as well.

What a fantastic burger! Juicy not greasy, cooked hot to order and the burger bun holds together to the last bite. I got the cowboy burger which was great. You need to unhinge your jaw to eat it but man is it good. The bbq sauce is an awesome addition to the flavor.

Inside, small and had a barnyard/winery aesthetic

Halal hamburger place in San Mateo. Sal's made SF Chronicles "Top Burgers in the Bay Area" list. It's located in a large plaza at the W Hillsdale exit and is on the left side. I like the interior design, it feels a bit like a vineyard with a simple chandelier inside, dark wood floors, and plants on the walls. Sal at the register was such a nice gentleman, super patient while we stared and debated the menu and he heard my wife accidentally spill some strawberry lemonade and came running with a rag for us. Sal's Classic: 6 oz patty, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, house sauce. Burger tasted slightly under-seasoned but the house sauce was nice. Tasted like a slightly spicy light BBQ-taste thousand island. All-American: 6 oz patty, halal beef bacon, american cheese, lettuce, tomato, sautéed onion, pickle, house sauce. This one was as great with bacon. Kids Cheeseburger: I had the same thing happen at Shake Shack because sometimes kid sizes ended up being huge. They are properly kid sizes at Sal's like a slightly bigger cheap McDonald's hamburger size. We ordered one for the kids to share but it wasn't enough so we ordered another one. Strawberry lemonade: House made, had a rich light red color and a good balance of sour and sweet.

I've been wanting to eat here for quite some time. Finally made it happen. The service was so so friendly. I ordered the American and it was huge and delicious! The bacon was super yummy. I also ordered garlic fries and hands down soooo good! I will be back!

Cute, local burger shop tucked away in Laurelwood plaza area of San Mateo. They have made-to-order classic American burgers made with halal meat. These are truly hearty, filling burgers that come with a side of fries. You can also substitute the side of regular fries with garlic fries or sweet potato fries for an additional cost. If you plan to order to-go, expect a 15-20 minute wait. You can order via phone/call in advance to avoid the wait. The burger is made-to-order and the fries are freshly fried. Super hot and crispy fries.

Vegan burger and sweet potato fries (the onion rings were not vegan unfortunately)
Shaun L.

The most welcoming and friendly staff you could hope to have. The food was clean, fresh, and tasty, at a reasonable price. Good vegan and halal options. All I would say is the spicy chicken sandwich could be spicier, and I prefer my fries a little crispier. But these are tiby issues that I could address when I'm ordering. Highly recommend this spot. Me and my wife will be back. Also, great parking, comfortable seating, and beautiful wooden tables.

It just so happens that our business is located next to Sal's place. I order food from Sal all the time and honestly think it's a great family-owned spot where you can even comfortably feed a kid. I love their Cowboys Burger -- I get it pretty much every couple of weeks, and the patty is just amazing. If you're ever in the area, definitely stop by Sal's Burgers for lunch or dinner. Thanks a lot!

The burger was fresh and flavorful, and the sauce really stood out. It's on the pricier side, but the quality makes up for it. Sal the owner was nice and had great recommendations!

The burger is very juicy, the beef is fresh and the taste is good, but I agreed with someone's comments, it is a bit overpriced.

Upon entering, I noticed that it is a sister restaurant to the Lazhou Noodles but before we could change our minds, the hostess sat us (lol). I went with the main beef noodle soup, and we also tried the dry noodles with spicy beef. I was expecting the food to be very similar to their sister restaurant - BUT the food here was so much better I was SO surprised. The broth tasted better, the noodles were higher quality, and the beef was also much more tender and had less gristle. it made me wonder if it was a fluke or if this location was just that much better as this restaurant was also much more crowded versus the other locations. I can't wait to come back and bring friends, and though San Mateo is parking is not as friendly, the food experience definitely makes up for it!

Noodles are hand pulled and made directly in front of you through a glass window where you can view your noodles being made. You can select from a variety of noodle textures and sizes. The noodle dishes are separated between soup and dry noodle versions. For the soups, recommend the Lanzhou hand pulled noodles soup or sichuan braised beef stew noodle soup. For the dry noodle, our favorite is the chilli oil noodles with wide noodles. For appetizers, the spicy wonton is really good. Their spicy sauce has just the right amount of kick and is mildly sweet. While they also serve dumplings, I kind of feel there are dumplings are just average --- stick with the noodles!

Order the rice, get the rice, and eat the rice. Often times if I'm trying to be carb conscious of skip over the rice, but we ate all the rice that came with our meal. We kept saying, " this rice is so good". It was a bit nostalgic, kind of like my grandma and mom's rice. A rich rice full of flavor. We ordered one appetizer sampler plate, one chicken kebab plate, one steak kebab plate, a side of fries, and knufa. Between three of us, it came out to about $30 per person. Ever so slightly on the pricey side, but larger quantity and very filling. Fries: 5/5 none left at the end Sampler: 3.5 babaganoush was excellent, everything else was ok, falafel was very sesame seed forward. Meat plates: 4/5 tasty, really appreciate how they took them off the skewer for serving, good, but nothing extraordinary Knufa: I'm a hard critic here because my family makes in my opinion the best :-) didn't really love this one. Cheese was not stretchy, was rubbery. Tasted very much like a wheatie (the cereal). Service was five out of five. Even 10 out of five! They were very friendly.
