My visit started out well enough. I was given a questionnaire regarding my past hair experiences and what I was looking for from my salon. I was escorted to the owner (OMG!) Morty where he listened very attentively and even brought out a picture to reconfirm. After that, my experience went downhill. Morty popped out for a smoke and then kept running off (5 times) mid haircut to work on a dye job on another patron. He finished, blew dry my hair and then started, what I thought, was fine tuning on the back of my hair. After five minutes I asked what he was doing and he told me he was thinning my hair so it wouldn't be so bulky in the back. I have fine hair, bulk has never been a problem. But I thought, "Hey, i have no idea what to do with hair". After that Morty finished up and when he spun me, I discovered he had shorn my head up the back. At it's longest it is one and half inches in the back and chin length at the front. I asked for a straight simple bob, I even used the word pageboy. When I asked him why he did that to the back of my head, his response was, "It's what I did" and he turned & left. I paid in state of shock and went home. I returned twenty minutes later and told them I was not happy and my money was refunded. Neither Morty or the manager apologized and left an associate to deal with the visibly upset woman with the worst haircut of her life. Don't use this salon. The lack of attention to customers needs and lack of professionalism really make me wonder how they ever made it to the Washingtonian's Top Fifty place to get a haircut. Lately I've been spending a lot of time and money trying to find a way to manage my curly hair without straightening it or putting it in a ponytail like I have for most of my life. I finally decided that I'd have to spend the money for a haircut and risk looking like a scene from the America's Next Top Model makeover episode. I came here specifically for the Ouidad cut and got an appointment with Christie. I liked that she sat down and discussed with me what I wanted and what she was going to do before she stared cutting. She also answered my questions about styling my hair at home. The cut itself was good, but nothing I was extra excited over. She took some of the bulk off of the bottom so it was no longer a triangle shape. Now I can let my hair free, so the cut did the job. Still, $70 plus tip was a lot of money just to do the job. read more

I went to Salon Red because I saw my neighbor with a great haircut and I wanted something similar. I called up and got an appoinment with Thingy who is no longer there. I spoke with her got a haircut and color but I felt that it took a really long time for the color. I ended up with a horrible haircut. It was longer on one side than the other so much so that when I went to put my hair up in a pony tail the next day my husband had to get the scissors out to cut off the extra long pieces just so I could go to the gym and not be embarassed. So why the two stars? I got a call from the salon asking if I was happy with my cut. I was honest and they scheduled another cut with the owner Morty. He cut my hair and I felt he took a lot of time to try to give me a nice haircut. I went with what he told me but in the long run I just didn't love the cut. I wish he had just followed what I asked but I did appreciate the time and the second cut. Overall I wouldn't and didn't go back. I don't have the time to get two haircuts just to end up with something that I didn't really love. read more

I have crazy curly hair. I can only get Ouidad cuts, so I was thrilled there was a place in MoCo who can do this. Even better, the entire staff is trained in Ouidad! So you never have to wait for one stylist. As someone who is sensitive about how much hair and frizz she has, I'm delighted that any stylist at Salon Red treats me with respect, and never looks daunted or talks about me behind my back. I've had other salons' stylists say shit about me when they thought I couldn't hear. Morgan and Brooke are both amazing, can't recommend them enough. I have been growing out my hair over the last three years and as my hair is graying I've been playing around with bleaching and toning by another salon (that I love!!) , but after over $600 spent in two visits with my hair actually turning a blue/green color (and being told that it's going to take a couple more visits), I opted to visit a dear friend and excellent stylist/owner here at Salon Red. It's not a super convenient location for me (which is partly why I quit going in 2011) but Morty is the first hairstylist I fully trusted to do anything he wants with my hair and he is the master of a short technical cut. I crossed my fingers and called the store, but an answering machine came on, and as I was getting anxious with sort of a last minute request, I left a couple of messages. About three hours later I got a text from Morty himself and he said he was free for whatever time that day! Yay!!! anyway- I cut off that whole mess and am now so happy with my short hair cut! I think I will be growing out again- I do this about every 5 years, but am looking forward to my next visit with Morty! As an aside, the business has been very much downsized (physical space and staff) but I am glad to have Morty to all myself! read more

I just visited Salon Red for the first time and had a great Ouidad curly cut with Christie! I heard they were doing a charity cut event to benefit the Metropolitan USO and figured it would be a great time to try a new cut for my very curly hair. I am not disappointed! My hair looks very well defined without any frizz and I'll most likely be back for another cut in a few months. The salon is very clean and modern and all of the staff were courteous and respectful. Christie was very friendly and offered me some recommended styling products without being pushy at all. Looking around at the other ladies in the chairs, it seems like they have a lot of repeat customers and have a loyal following that speaks to the quality of their services. There isn't a shortage of hair and manicure salons in Kentlands. Salon Red was a recommendation by a friend of mine, who makes me hair-envy when she gets her haircuts. Scheduling an appointment was a breeze, and yesteday I got my first haircut there. Overall, the experience was very positive until the checkout. The hairdresser I was referred to was very good at what she did, listened to my asks, and delivered the haircut I wanted. Salon Red has a fantastic referral program - I received 20% off my haircut, and my friend will be getting a voucher in mail. I could have purchased products at 15% off, and to top it all off, I was set up with a small gift bag of sample products. I don't remember a salon in my past that did ALL of these things in their referral programs. Having said that, the checkout process left a sour taste in my mouth, which will make me think twice before coming back. Two things, really, but they are big to me. 1. Tips of credit cards should be a no-brainer. Stop with the all the debit/check/cash non-sense. We are in 21st century, my credit cards are on my phone. Just do it. While at it, also do the Apple/Google pay, it's inevitable. If you don't like the fees you pay for the transaction, incorporate it in the base of your cuts. I'd rather pay 3-5% more on my cut, then be left at the checkout with the "we don't put tips on the credit cards". 2. The split of the tip between the person who washed my hair and the person who cut my hair is unfair to the customer. I am a very generous tipper, but asking me to split things is making me feel like I am under-tipping. If you want me to tip separately, itemize the haircut service for me, so I know how much was the wash and how much was the cut. I want to tip on the haircut SERVICE, not two separate PEOPLE. read more

I can't speak for the other reviews or for the salon even but I CAN speak for Danielle and that's who my five stars go to! She's been cutting my hair since I was in college (11+ years) and I can't stop going to her. I've tried others and it's just not the same. She spends a great amount of time making sure your cut/color is perfect and is extremely friendly and professional at the same time. My haircuts always last and grow out very nicely. I live California now and will still only go to her. I highly recommend going to her, you will NEVER be let down. I have yet to have one complaint after seeing her for over 11 years. Oh and my sisters (one in NYC and one in Austin) still go to her her too! Tell her what you want and you'll get it perfectly each time. Love you, Danielle! read more

I went to this salon several months ago and I don't remember the stylist's name but she had short blonde hair and was very talkative. Kinda thought she should of been from Texas or somewhere else stereotypically "southern" but she was a native Marylander. I went here twice and the first time I was persuaded to go was because they sell Ouidad hair products, which is a special product for curly hair. She gave me a trim and also curled my hair using the Ouidad products. It looked okay but way too much product was in my hair then I like or am use to. It made me feel like I couldn't even touch my hair and by later that night my hair was frizzy anyway! If there is extreme humidity in the air, all the products in the world won't help! I still ended up buying the shampoo and conditioner and a curl cream from another product line. These products have lasted me a long time and I have been happy with them. The next time I went, I wanted to see how well she could blow dry and I was sadly let down. My hair looked frizzy and not as straight and shiny as I would have liked it to be. I ended up flat ironing it when I got home. Just a side note, I have thin, fine curls, so it should be nothing for a trained stylist to undertake. A day or so later I also realized that the trim she gave me was uneven and the left front side of my hair was longer then any other part and the back of my hair was shorter. Overall, everyone is very nice at the salon but the actual styling is mediocre. I'm still on my search!! My experience at Salon Red was nothing exciting or revolutionary and I ended up spending a whole lot of money. read more

My problem comes with how I feel when I'm there, I feel like I'm intruding or like they're doing me a favor for "squeezing me in" even if I booked 2 weeks ahead of time. This review is for the airbrush tanning and special occasion (updo) services. I hope to update this review later once I get a haircut at this salon. Also, my apologies for the long review. Apparently I'm Wordy McWordison. Updo Review: I was a bridesmaid in a wedding over Christmas weekend. The bride requested us to all have updos, so I scheduled an appointment with Amanda, one of their newest stylists (per their website). I have long, fine, straight(ish) hair and I NEVER wear it up (except for a ponytail/bun thingy just to keep it off my face - NOT appropriate for special occasion). Amanda is adorable. I immediately knew based on her style (cute, with a slight edge) that I would not receive Terrible Wedding Hair. I tried to explain what i wanted (which really, I had no idea - I showed her a couple of styles that I liked on Pinterest, which included some knotty buns, with some volume in the front - sort of like a Bump It, but not so BUMP. Also, NO TENDRILS. My God, people. Enough with the tendrils). She took what little I gave her and then styled my hair pretty nicely, considering I hate updos and I kept telling her I wanted volume in the front when in fact, it turns out I didn't like volume at all (thus making her remove all the volume she had created). She had a small bit of assistance from Kym and Barbara, whom she referred to as "updo masters," so really, I always felt confident that I would receive a great style and not look like an idiot during the wedding. I was very happy with my final updo, and it stayed put ALL DAY (from 1030am when she finished to almost midnight when I took it down). This was especially impressive considering we had 40 mph wind that day, I kept hitting my head on things (I'm kind of clumsy) and I danced a lot at the wedding. I paid $60 (plus tip), which I think is reasonable for an updo considering the other salons I consulted (DryBar in Bethesda and Hypnotic in Olney) quoted me $75+. Not sure if the low price was because she's relatively new or not? All in all, I highly recommend Amanda (and probably Kym and Barbara, based on my small interaction with them and Amanda's comments). I'm actually in need of a haircut, and I think I'm going to go back to Amanda since I think she has great style and an easy personality. Stay tuned for an update. Airbrush Tanning Review: Again, since I was a bridesmaid and going to be photographed a lot, I decided to get a spray tan so that no one would wonder who the vampire-with-pneumonia-bridesmaid was. I am very fair-skinned, and even more pale than usual considering I had a baby in September and never got my normal summer tan (you try getting in a bathing suit while 8 months pregnant). Therefore, I scheduled an appointment with Nina, their makeup/tanning stylist. Nina was also great. Very friendly, she asked me what kind of color I was looking for, and immediately assured me that I would not go from uber-pale to Snookie. I just told her that I wanted a bit of natural-looking color (don't we all) that would essentially just let me blend in with the other maids. I've been airbrushed before (see my review for Solar Planet, in which I compare that train wreck to Ninotch in Bethesda, the best place ever) and I'd say the experience is very comparable to the better tanning salons. The spray itself is COLD, but Nina uses a space heater to help keep you comfortable (though I bet this would feel refreshing in the summer). Speaking of comfort, even though I stripped down to my skivvies, Nina made me feel completely comfortable the entire time - she's a true pro. I paid $45 (plus tip) for the full-body spray, which again is comparable to better salons (and $10 less than listed on the website, not sure why mine was cheaper). Now, about the tan itself. BAD ASS. Seriously, I got the tan at 4ish Friday night, and the color deepened nicely throughout the evening (you can't shower for at least 6-8 hrs, preferably overnight). By the next morning, I was worried the tan would wash completely off in the shower, and while of course it decreased a bit, it was PERFECT for the wedding. No streaks. No blotches. Just great, natural-looking color that just gave me a nice glow, enough for people to tell me I looked great, but not to know that I got a spray tan per se. The website says their tans last 7-10-14 days, depending on "how well you typically hold a tan". I would say my color was wonderfully noticeable from Friday night until Sunday night, and then less so on Monday and Tuesday and had faded a lot (at least in my face) by Wednesday pm., though I still see color in my stomach and legs. THIS IS AMAZING. My other spray tans lasted about half as long. I would highly HIGHLY recommend Nina to anyone. I will definitely come her for my next spray tan. read more

I was taken right on time, which was much appreciated, and the stylist, Kim, was personable and took time to sit with me and go over my hair and what I wanted. My cut looked very nice. I thought the customer service was good, and their referral program is also nice in that it rewards both referrer and refer-ee with discounts. Also, parking was free and extremely easy! It was boxy and, I looked like the female character from the Dilbert comics, no layers, no depth. She was incredibly nice and so was the rest of the staff; hence the two stars. Salon Red is conveniently located and has great staff. I adore Barbara and if Christie isn't available I will go to her. I don't trust many people with my hair so this is saying a lot. There is a woman who shampoos and I wish I remembered her name because she is amazing. Made sure the water temp was just right and used the minty shampoo I love and gives the best scalp massages. I started coming to Salon Red almost two years ago after an awful experience at another salon where my hair was completely bleached out blonde and very damaged. Megan M. immediately came to my rescue and told me that this was going to be a long process to get my hair back to the color I wanted and for my hair to be healthy again. After my first appoint with Megan, my hair was dramatically better looking and now my hair is healthy and almost all of the bleach from 2 years ago is gone (I keep my hair long so it took a while)! I get compliments all the time on how beautiful my color is and it's all thanks to Megan. She always consults me before coloring my hair and is great at listening to what I want. I moved to Gaithersburg after college and got a recommendation to try out Salon Red and when I called the make an appointment, the receptionist recommended Veronica for my "trendy" haircut. At the time I had a short hair cut with the longest pieces at my chin that angled up towards the back of my head. I LOVED the cut she gave me and got so many compliments on it. She really know what she is doing! She also mixed a great brown color with red undertones. I have since grown my hair out but still received great haircuts. I left anoter salon after my much-loved stylist moved, and the person that she recommended at her salon was technically good, but sitting in her chair felt like torture with her bad attitude. SO, I was recommended to Salon Red by a friend who has been going to Morty for years, and at the last minute I called for a Saturday cut and color. The helpful receptionist recommended Jessica, a stylist new to the salon. I was so pleasntly surprised with this salon; the helpful and friendly staff and Jessica was wonderful. I trust her completely, and don't even bother taking in pictures anymore - I just tell her what I am looking for (a little shorter, or keep the body but not the length, or something "different") and she works her magic. Sam is the best! Before shampooing my hair, she sat me down and asked me what I wanted and if it'd be okay to cut this area and that area and I totally agreed with her. My hair is isn't too thick, but not thin either and it's right above my chest. I left there feeling extremely happy and I got the cut I wanted!
