I agree with those who said it is expensive, and I have not always had the best experiences there, but I have always gotten a great haircut from Carolyn. She is down to earth, sweet, and listens to what you want. I think with any salon it is about the individual and maybe not the salon itself. I highly reccomend Carolyn, you will not be dissapointed! Morty the owner, is a bit full of himself. I did a walk-in once and he asked if he could something a little different. I trusted him as a professional and this man proceeded to buz my hairline so that I would have to shave that part of my head daily because he said it shsped my face better. I visited the salon today for the first time. Ill start by saying I am very happy with my haircut and am only not giving this a 5 star rating because I believe the customer service (specifically the receptionists) needs to be improved. CONS: When I called to make my appointment, it was literally a 10 minute phone call because the receptionist could not understand me spelling my last name. She then was less than accommodating when trying to find an open slot for me. Because the process took so long I ended up just taking an appointment for a couple of months away but then called back and spoke to a different girl and got an earlier appointment. So when I arrived at my appointment today as I walked in nobody was at the reception desk. However after a couple seconds of waiting at the desk a receptionist started waking over and instead of greeting me or saying hold on a minute she proceeded to pick up the ringing phone and have a 2 minute conversation. After she got off the phone, instead of apologizing she just checked me in without apologizing and without being very friendly at all. She also failed to ask me if I needed anything (e.g. Water or magazine) while waiting. I honestly didn't even notice that until another customer walked in and was asked if she wanted anything by another receptionist. So while it's not a huge deal, I did take note. PROS: Regarding my actual haircut I went and saw Belinda and really liked her. I got the Ouidad cut and she had a short consultation with me before and during the cut told me everything she was doing and made sure I was okay with everything she did. At the end of it all, she was the first hair stylist I've ever had in over 25 years to do my hair correctly, and put just the right amount of product in my hair. I give 5 stars to her and would HIGHLY recommend her. Best of all, she kept me informed of all the products more of an FYI and in no way did she push the product on me. Bottom line. This review is for Nina's eyebrow threading and makeup services, as well as their special occasion updo services. It is going to be very long, but I think detail is important. When my brother got married in June 2013, all the bridesmaids came in to get updos, and the bride got her makeup done by Nina. First, a review of the updos. My updo was wonderful! My stylinst took her time and gave me EXACTLY what I wanted based on the photos I brought in. She even recommended I go in a certain direction based on the length of my hair, and she was dead on. In fact, all the bridesmaids looks fabulous. The best part was my updo STAYED PUT the entire night. It was still soft and touchable, but didn't turn into a frizz ball as the night went on. That thing was locked in place! It was a bit pricey at $75, but she took an hour and 20 minutes to pin all the curls (I have really long hair), and it was probably the best updo I've ever had. Worth it, if you can afford it. I can't say enough great things about Nina. My sister in law was the most laid back bride on the planet, and scheduled with Nina without having had a trial or anything. She just showed up the day of, said her style was "rustic" and said "do whatever." Nina is a true artist. She doesn't just know how to apply makeup, she knows what shades, textures, styles, application techniques will look good on different women. Well, my sister in law looked GORGEOUS! She was showered in compliments, and Nina was able to give her exactly what she wanted, without having a practice session, and with very little direction. After the wedding, I was so impressed with Nina that I started going to her to get my eyebrows done. Well, needless to say, she is just AMAZING! She threads instead of waxing, and has the ability to work with the shape of your face to give you the eyebrow that will look best on you. She takes her time - my appointments usually last about 20-30 minutes. She doesn't just thread, she trims, brushes, applies makeup, and even gives you "homework" for what she wants you to do at home to keep the shape nice. For example, I have a patch on my left eyebrow that, for whatever reason, my hair doesn't really grow. It's so annoying! It's like I have a tiny gap in my eyebrow. I have had disastrous eyebrow appointments before where the stylist just gives me the "standard" shape, and I get a bald patch! Not Nina. She recognized it immediately and worked around it perfectly. She instructed me to start using clear mascara every day to begin to "train" my other hairs to start growing in a different direction so they would, over the months, grow to cover the patch. I just had my second appointment with her, and the results this time were even better than the first time! When I commented, she said "oh, as the months go the shape will continue to get better as I slowly get them where I want them." O.M.G who else would have a "strategic plan" for your eyebrows and slowly work to get them there? If you have "problem eyebrows" at all, bald patches, weird shape, etc., I HIGHLY suggest you see Nina. I am going to start going there for haircuts and highlights as well, and hope those services knocks my socks off, too! read more

I've been going to Salon Red since the day they first opened over 10 years ago. Joe (former part owner with Morty) has been doing my hair for over 15 years and he does a great job. Both Morty and Joe are top notch stylists, which is why drive all the way from Potomac to Gaithers burg every month for color and cut. Overall, the staff are polite and helpful. I also appreciate the friendly and comfortable atmosphere, which is quite often lacking in higher end salons. As far as the price, I've been places that were higher and at Salon Red, you get what you pay for! read more

A haven for curly girls with one caveat: I went here to take advantage of the Ouidad system (for curly hair) and was quite pleased with the service that I received. My stylist was knowledgeable, and she seemed to truly understand how to style my hair better than any other stylist I have visited. I left with great looking hair that had been properly handled for my hair type. I will definitely be back. The only reason I can't give a five star rating is because the staff of this salon did not seem very courteous when they were not directly interacting with me. The best of example of this came when a staff member stepped directly into my path as I was trying to follow my stylist to her chair. This staff member proceeded to carry on non-work banter with a co-worker and did not seem to realize that I was trying to get past him. Overall, the interactions between staff left me feeling that the atmosphere was not very professional. Update- just booked another appointment with a very unprofessional receptionist. She seemed distracted and I actually had to ask her if she needed my name! Left me with a bad taste in my mouth. read more

MEGAN AUGE is an outstanding stylist and colorist. She is extremely talented and versatile. I have been coloring my hair for the past 20 years at other salons, and Megan is the first colorist to ever get my color exactly right - every time. Megan cuts and colors my entire family now. She did beautiful cuts on my daughters. One has curly hair, and she is very picky. Megan used a special technique for cutting curly hair and it looks fantastic. She also taught her how to dry her hair so that it looks great when she wears it curly. She colored my niece's hair and it was exactly what she wanted. It looks gorgeous! Megan did pre-homecoming hair and makeup for my nieces and two of their friends, and they looked beautiful. The shop is very nice and bright and clean. It is a very pleasant place to be. Megan is truly an all-around excellent stylist and colorist. We will keep coming back to Megan because she is so good and because she always listens and understands exactly what we want! First one Dierdra was happy with but when she left no one told me I showed up they gave me Barbara. She colored my hair blond when I said no blond. How hard was that to understand. Then Rania color actually pretty good and she was very nice. Color just ok. Just the whole atmosphere not great. Owner never nice to anyone, outdated stylist. When asked how much longer I would be there (so I could call my sitter) I was treated rudely and told she wouldn't be able to finish! My hair was still dripping wet while I was trying to pay. Really nice salon with a comfortable atmosphere and very friendly employees. It's one of the few salons I have been to where there isn't a lot of pretense and snobbery. Everyone I've spoken with and worked with have been kind, attentive and professional. I have thick, yet fine and loose curly hair, not tight curls, and finding someone who knows how to manage my hair has been a year-long battle in the DVM. I ended up chopping my hair off last year after trying too many salons and stylists and never getting a good cut or customer experience. I tried Salon Red and was very pleased with my cut. They follow Ouidad styling for curly hair and while that's not how I style my own hair and I will never be into the products, etc. the cut works really well on my hair. I've been able to continue my wash and wear look with no extra effort, which is a plus for me. After 3 successful cuts, I think it's safe to say this is my new regular salon. read more

Very expensive (over $200 for color and cut), average salon. Reason I left (and I would have kept returning, in spite of the high prices) was the service. I was unable to get my usual stylist due to her schedule. When I came back in and was serviced by another stylist, this individual would not acknowledge me. Really? Very unprofessional. I used Morty one time and was very pleased. I went back a second time and the haircut was totally different. He did try to make it right after I mentioned this to him but it still was not similar to the first haircut I had liked. He said maybe I should have brought a photo of what it looked like last time because he did not remember. He also said maybe I should go somewhere else if it was not to my liking! If it's not right, you have to say so instead of living with it. I have been getting my hair cut at Salon Red for several years, after moving here from New York and searching for a good hair cut. It took me a long time to find Morty. I had to ask several strangers where they got their hair. And when three, in different parts of the county, said Morty did it, I sought him out. Went here for the first time with a Living Social deal. Customer service was great. Called and initially booked my consultation for keratin treatment with Kym. Called back and asked if I could get scheduled with Veronica, but was informed that the LS deal was only with Kym. 20 min later, Alex calls me back saying that due to volume, Veronica was taking LS appointments and asked if I wanted to schedule with her...AWESOME! Booked the consulation 4 days after the deal, booked my appointment 2 weeks later. It's been exactly a week since I got the keratin treatment and sadly, all I can say is that my hair is softer. I have asian hair (fairly straight) and wanted the treatment so I wouldn't have to flat iron every other day. I was hoping with the keratin treatment, I could just "air dry" and go...not the case. Oh well, I'm glad I didn't pay full price. Salon is nice, Veronica is very personable and Alex called yesterday and followed up with me, so Customer Service gets 5 stars....keratin treatment, 2 stars. read more

My hair is very long and I've have had horrible experiences in the past where stylists ignored my request of a trim. However Christie is very patient and understanding and cuts only the amount I specify. She is very talented and knows exactly how to execute the vision I have for my hair. I used to go to Salon Red before I moved and I will say this, Rania was by far the best stylist/colorist I've ever had (and I've had a lot). Literally anything she did to my hair turned out wonderful. One time she even put in temporary hot pink streaks in it when I said I was looking for something a little more "edgy" for my last few months of freedom before I joined the world of a conservative firm and somehow it looked amazing and not ridiculous. Got numerous compliments on it while pink at school and it faded down perfectly to a happy natural red by the time I had my work orientation (where I got more compliments and an HR woman later told me my choppy cut she saw that day was her inspiration for cutting her hair after years of it long). Short trendy choppy cuts, blond highlights, long layered boho hair...she makes everything look good. I have extremely thick red, wavy hair. I even used to travel over an hour to get there after I moved because she could literally do no wrong. She's a total sweetheart, will happily give you exactly what you ask for, but can also be counted on to come up with something awesome if you walk in and say "just DIFFERENT, I don't care what you do I just want something new and hot!" So why did I leave? Getting an appointment is impossible (we're talking a month out), the receptionists are rude, you're often waiting and there for hours because of overbooking and receptionists that won't call and let you know your stylist is running behind, and when they say pricey...they mean PRICEY, so I finally just decided I couldn't deal with that many negatives when I'm traveling that far. But if you have an endless supply of patience and really don't have a budget, go to Rania. I'm still trying in vain to find someone in Baltimore as good as her. read more

I had a really awful haircut experience with Danielle. To make a long story shorter, I live on a farm and need to be able to pull my hair back into a bun to keep it out of the way, and so I told her. I am also almost 70 years old. Bottom line, she cut it too short for a bun, and then told me I could use pins, that she didn't cut hair for anything so (lowly) as a a bun anyway, that I wanted an updated hairdo, that I asked her for a hair cut and that was what I got, etc. At one point during the cut I asked if she weren't cutting it too short, and she said the length was still there--she was just curtting the interior!! Go figure. She also spent the entire time chatting with a trainee and may well have been distracted. In any case, if I want my hair all up without a lot of hardware or lumps, I get the same style as Pebbles from Flintstone until this hot mess grows out. It may well be a fine haircut that I got if I want to spend time with a blow dryer, but it isn't what I asked for, and it doesn't suit my lifestyle. The arrogance of this woman is mind boggling--avoid her unless you want what she wants to give you. the owner did come out and said he agreed with me and offered me a free haircut with him after this grows out. read more

I had a LivingSocial deal for a manicure/pedicure. Michelle was nice but busy, and it seemed like she rushed through me so that she could get to her regulars faster. My nails were filed unevenly, my toes are gloppy, and I didn't see any evidence of that the tools were sterilized. The nails stations are upstairs from the salon and has that horrible acrylic smell. I feel fine with what I paid for the LivingSocial deal, but I wouldn't pay full price and I won't be back. read more

I have been to this salon for a few different occasions. I loved Kate, she was the first person I had my haircut with and she LISTENS!! Danielle....not so much. She's extremely high on herself. A great stylist she may be...for short hair. I don't care how great of a stylist you think you are, but if you can't LISTEN to what the customer wants, then you're not good at all. I have long hair and wanted to keep most of my length. I am not trendy but wanted to change it up and add some long bangs. Long enough to tuck behind my ears. I brought in a picture of EXACTLY what I wanted, nothing different, very simple style with distinct layers. What I ended up with did not look similar at all to what I had in mind when I left. In fact, Danielle told me not to expect what the hairstyle looked like because that was when it was styled and not what my hair would ever look like on a daily basis. What?! Before I left I asked her to add in layers because I couldn't tell I had any. She had responded that I had asked for "seamless layers" (ie blended layers that are not distinguishable) and that my hair wasn't healthy enough for additional layers and I could get them if I came back to her once I was "used to my new haircut". uhhh methinks not. read more

Danielle did a great job taming my hair (I am growing out short flip cut and have a lot of hair so the random lengths were getting too bulky for me to manage). She was very personable and not afraid to share tips and over the counter alternatives instead of pushing the pricy items most salons do. I was a little shocked at the counter when checking out. I have been going to another salon/spa in Gambrills that is 3 times the size, experience and ambiance for years and paid far less (about $40 LESS!) but have moved and needed to find something closer. I'll go back in 7 weeks and give it another shot. I'm hoping with just a maintenance cut the cost is less compared to the consultation and major cut. read more

Salon Red used to be a salon that I would recommend to all of my friends. My last visit, however, changed that. I booked an appointment for the USMC ball and was quoted $60 over the phone. After my service, which made me an hour late for my next appointment, I was charged $80 and told that my coupon (which I was given for referring customers to the salon) would not be accepted because it had expired (fine). I was told by the manager that the owner would call me, and after calling twice to speak to him, I never received a call. Today, I went into the salon and was told a few things: 1) The owner was not going to refund my money. 2) The reason I was quoted $60 was because the receptionist quoted me the price of a haircut. 3) The owner of the salon was too busy to speak to me but "would call me". I refused to leave and after much back and forth the owner came shooting up to the front, pointing his finger and asking if I was "the one" that wanted my $20 back. He practically threw it at me stating angrily that, "His time was worth more than $20." I'm glad that a well-off salon owner's time is worth more than mine, but I am a teacher and my fiance is a US Marine. Money is a blessing that we do not spend frivolously. Anyone who has ever budgeted for anything would be angry by the fact that they were being overcharged. Shame on him for being so pompous. He will never get my business, nor will I refer him again. read more
