The basic gym membership is an incredible value and the center itself easily deserves five stars as one of Brooklyn's true community treasures. The pool in Crown Heights is a bright, clean, six-lane gem inside the restored Bedford-Union Armory. Crystal-clear water, perfect temperature, friendly lifeguards, and a welcoming, community-first vibe with discounted lessons and inclusive nights. However, now they've decided to take away all late basketball open court hours and give it to basketball academy and adult pickleball. They only have late open court hours on Thursday night from 7 to 10PM which causes a large influx of people on one night and it's impossible to do anything. For comparison, late open courts hours used to be 3 to 4 times a week from 7 to 9PM. The gym also gets very crowded due to their limited machines and gear. They're pushing for more and more kid related activities and leave out young adults and adults. I would suggest signing up for the YMCA or another gym that's geared toward adults if you're not a parent.

While I was in there I found it to be a very nice and comfortable space where members of the community can gather to converse or play games, read or perhaps enjoy some sort of show since there is a small stage in one of the rooms. I believe some sort of membership is required to enter and since there didn't appear to be a website for it, you would need to drop in personally. Its right near John Paul Jones Park and the Shore Promenade so at least you will have some other places to look at when you visit.

Currently this clean, open location is a hub for Covid vaccines for seniors. The staff is solid, the vast gym hall has spread out seating for safe and quick treatments. There are working water fountains and spotless restrooms. This was a safe and good experience today. There is a private parking lot adjacent to the building. Loved that there were 4 spots open when I pulled in today at 12:30 pm. The Community center has been a Voting location, hosted basketball tournaments, had naturalization ceremonies, seminars, health and exercise classes and social get togethers. A Universal center with multipurpose functionality!! I did not see anything closely resembling "Brownsville is the murder capital of New York" or "Brownsville has consistently held one of the highest poverty and crime rates of any neighborhood in New York City" today at or around this location or at the restaurant that served us a memorable meal a mile away. I just got another great taste of one of the five boroughs of the City that I love!!
