Recently, I've had horrible luck with my highlights/color. I had a really bad hair color about 4 months ago at a different low end salon. I asked a friend who she recommended and she told me to come to Salon Dumbo to see Diego! I made an appointment two weeks in advance and SD kept updating me and reminding me about my appointment date and time. I love this feature! It's wonderful they keep their clients updated especially when there is a no show fee (ask about this over the phone when you book). When I walked in I was greeted warmly and offered coffee, water, or sparking water. Later while I was waiting for my foils to set, she brought me a water and another coffee. I really appreciated that they do this. You are spending a lot to get your hair done and the complimentary coffee and water was absolutely wonderful - a lovely touch to make their customers comfortable/get the best bang for their buck. Diego spent 90 minutes alone washing and drying my hair. He gave me an amazing hair cut that gives my hair so much movement. At the end of our appointment, I was immensely emotional. Because of my previous bad experience, I was worried how my hair would turn out. Diego exceeded expectations. I'll get my hair done by Diego for as long as he'll have me. Everything about this salon is perfect and Rodrigo is an ARTISTE! I'd gotten highlights maybe three times previously. The last time was about five years ago. None of those experiences changed my life and I never felt like maintaining the upkeep. However, my hair has NEVER LOOKED THIS GOOD, so I will certainly be returning to "Rod Hair God"! Yes, I went to Salon Dumbo bc I needed a blow out for a video shoot. The booking online was convenient, and Diego was great. Since they were so friendly over the phone and accommodating to my time preference same day, I was really looking forward to my appointment. The location is beautiful right in the heart of Dumbo, and the service I received from Kinga was top tier! She didn't rush through any part of the service (wash with nice head massage, full haircut with razor detail/blow dry/ aftercare recommendations) yet still got me done during my lunch break and...this might be the best haircut I've ever had! SDQ is now Salon Dumbo -- call it whatever you want but I got the best hair cut with Brenna this afternoon! The have a Monday "express cut" special which is $35 for an excellent cut. Brenna was able to finish my sentences because she so knew exactly what needed to be done to update my overgrown long bob (at this point just medium length hair ;)) to exactly the length and texture I needed for a light, layered look that won't frizz into a triangle. They called just before my appointment and told me the stylist cancelled so they were putting me with someone else. On arrival I was clear to say I wanted to maintain the length of my hair with long layers. The girl knew I was in a rush so throughout the cut she didn't check in with me, she just kept saying "just trust me" as she chopped away. Needless to say I left with a terrible blunt long bob (like I had in third grade) that could've been done at Supercuts. Never again. read more

Despite my moving out of the city a few years ago, I still make a point to book an appointment with him when I'm in town because his work is that good. I have always been over the moon with my haircuts and color because he takes the time to understand what I want and knows how to execute it in a skilled and stylish way. I was so happy when he became the owner as he brings so much experience and skill to the table--plus he's a nice person and a joy to chat with. Dumbo - with David - is my go-to salon when I am in NYC! Not only the salon is cozy and beautiful, but David has a real sense of his clients, and wants them to feel fabulous, and truly themselves. My hair is specifically difficult as I curl randomly, and when I met him 12 years ago, I was desperately looking for a good stylist as I had no time to go see mine in SF before leaving for a wedding. And our hair love story began... I really appreciated also that even if David thought he would probably never see me again, he took the same care of me as he did of his regular clients. After several bad colors at another salon, I had kind of given up as my old colorist made it seem like my stubborn gray hair was the issue. I went in just for a blow out and I immediately knew that this woman was talented and could fix it so I scheduled an appointment. I decided to start the summer with a color, cut and keratin.
