What a find! Gil was recommended to me by a friend, and he sure didn't steer me wrong. Gil is my new hair cutter. He gave me exactly the haircut I wanted. He was personable and fun to talk to, and everything about the experience was so easy. Salon de la Cruz is an upscale salon, but without a hint of pretentiousness. Everyone I encountered was nice and down to earth, and the price was very fair. Parking wasn't too hard to find. The spots in front of the shop on Green Street were all taken, so I parked around the corner on the cross street (Catalina I think?) where there was a 2-hour limit. What the what?!!! FIrst time giving a hair cut shop five frraking stars but totally deservingly! Cut was 50-75$, mine ended up being 60 for wash cut and blow out. in and out in 45 min. I was feeling desperate for a cut cause my hair was crayyyyyy long and heavy so I was constantly tying it up so, naturally, I yelped it and found this lil piece of glisten in an old school 'hood. I called in around 11 and was able to get an appointment that afternoon... i was kinda nervous they were able to get me in so readily but, like I said, I was desperate to get rid of some of the dead weight.. I'm was still totally untrusting tho hahh Fortunately for me, I showed a pic and mentioned what I liked about it and away she went: first a wash and then snip snip snip. Couldn't tell what it looked like at first cause it was a wet cut but it sure did feel better! But good gawwwwd as she was blowing it out I fell in LOVE. I moved to Pasadena a couple years ago and it's been a struggle trying to find a new hair stylist in the area (I've gone to at least 4 different places trying to find the right fit!). I purchased a Groupon because I was desperate to get a hair cut but didn't want to spend a ton of money. It just so happened this salon is a couple blocks from where I work, so I figured, why not? I scheduled my appointment with Brittany (who is the person who does the cuts for all Groupon purchases). I started out with a deep conditioning treatment which I needed while she finished with her previous client. Brittany was great, we had a good conversation, it was obvious she knew what she was doing and overall I was happy with my haircut. The only thing that was slightly disappointing was that I mentioned I wanted to get side swept bangs, but she had forgotten until the very end to which she asked if I still wanted them. I declined, thinking I could always just get them later because I wasn't fully committed to getting them yet. ANYWAY, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this salon. It's very hip and busy. Daniqua did my keration treatment and I'm in love! My hair has never felt/ looked so healthy. I always had frizzy hair when I got out of the shower and had it air dry. My first visit to Salon De La Cruz was with a Groupon Daily Deal. They were actually booked up for that day when I called, but they said they'd honor it the following week, so I made an appointment with Eric. I felt right at home when I walked in the door. I was greeted amicably by the receptionist and chilled out on their sofa for a few minutes enjoying the good tunes pumping through the salon. I love their laid back vibe. They just feel cool. And not condescending cool-kids-club-members-only cool, but genuine everyone's-just-having-a-good-time-here cool. Eric is great. Even if my experience had been mediocre I'd probably come back for that amazing scalp massage. That alone is worth it. But let me set the record straight - there is nothing mediocre about his work. He did a fairly quick reshaping and re-layering of my raggedy looking 'do, and my curly hair was transformed into a thing of beauty. Bernice is so sweet! My friend recommended me to get my hair cut at Salon De La Cruz by Bernice and I am so happy I decided to make an appointment! The salon itself is very cute and hip. I love the decor because it makes you feel classy and comfortable. The receptionist is very nice and friendly and made me feel welcome. The first time I went, Bernice cut my (very unhealthy and long) hair which had not been cut in 2 years...and turned it into a stylish and classy medium bob! The second time I went was for color and she did balayage. She is insanely patient and treats your hair like a piece of artwork. You can tell she has passion for doing what she loves. Down side is the color i wanted did not turn out how i wanted it at all and the next time i went in for a color fix she said that she wouldnt be able to make my hair go lighter using the balayage technique and that i had to do a different style of coloring. Came here for a deep condition, haircut, and blow dry with Jenna from a Groupon deal. She was nice and service was good, however I do feel she shortened the process because of the deal. I asked for a trim on my current layers, which she did. However, she did not bother feathering out my layers to make it look more natural, so my ends came out really blunt. I've been seeing Ilfredo and Al. They previously were at another salon called The Factory which isn't open anymore and I was delighted to find that they were still doing hair. They're probably the best stylists I've ever been to. Both are amazing with color, cut, and the blowout. Came here to get a haircut with Jenna. I found her through Groupon actually, so I wasn't sure about the quality of the haircut. However, she was a total pro and knows exactly what she's doing. I skipped the deep conditioning part of my deal, but she did do a wash, cut and style of my hair and I loved it. The wash and cut only took 30-40 minutes and the style was the remainder of my hour there. I love the idea that I can pop in here during my lunch break for a cut. After reading the reviews, I felt like I was in for a 5 star experience at SDLC, but it was closer to 3.5. I called and made a same day appt with no problem, so off to a good start. I get to the salon and check in, and the receptionist politely informs me that Marissa will be doing my hair and she was on her way so I could take a seat. I noticed that other customers around me were asked if they cared for a beverage, but I was not. Ok, I'd just eaten lunch, so I didn't need a drink, but it would have been nice to be offered. Anyways, Marissa introduces herself to me, and we sit in her chair and talk very briefly about what I'd like. I was hoping for some input because I didn't have anything specific in mind, but didn't really get anything....ok, she's a professional, so I figure she knows what she's doing. I don't always enjoy talking when I'm having my haircut with someone because it can be awkward, but there was NO small talk at all, which felt even more awkward. There was no talking, no checking in, nothing. Ok, fine, I can read a magazine. When we were done and I was paying with my groupon, I looked at my watch. It was 3:40 which meant that the haircut took all of about 35 minutes. Fastest haircut I've ever had, for sure. I sure felt like I had been rushed through, but I had a great blow out, so I couldn't complain. The haircut was great and is holding up nicely, but the experience was noticeably lacking. It's a nice salon, and other stylists seemed to be chatty, so maybe I came on an off day. read more

I visited this salon in hopes of finding my new go to place. Having recently started working in the area, a salon in Pasadena was a must find. I read the reviews on Yelp and thought that I would try my chances. I called to make an appointment for a one process color, cut and blowdry. The booking was easy- and the gentlemen that answered the phone was nice and friendly. Upon walking into the salon, I was greeted by (who I think was) the same gentlemen. I believe he might be the owner as well. He offered me refreshments and then introduced me to my stylist, Selene. Selene was firendly, applied my color and then brought me over to a chair in the corner. After 15 minutes- she took another client. She talked to him about his hair, washed his hair, cut his hair, washed his hair again. I tried getting her attention- nothing. Fastforward to 45 minutes, sitting in the corner. She didnt come to check on my hair ONCE. I get up, complain to the other stylist and he doesnt interrupt her. Instead, she finishes, and goes and sits at the front desk. Finally, I get up and explain to her I have been sitting there for an hour. NO APOLOGY. I had her quickly cut my hair, didnt have her blowdry it- and got out of there as fast as possible. The owner was in the salon and should have been aware of what was going on. He managed to color, cut and blowdry someone else while I was sitting with dye on my hair. I do not recommend their customer service- or Selene's skills as a colorist. My hair is overprocessed- and the color is fading. read more

Recently came here with a Groupon in hand not knowing how this place was going to pan out. Lucky for me I had an awesome experience and I now think I might have found my new permanent salon after years and years of searching. I had an amazing cut by Carlos and it was exactly what I was looking for. I told him what I wanted and he gave me his honest opinion as to what was best for me. I've been looking for someone like that because I don't always know what is best for me (sometimes I see something and want that hair cut until I actually see it on me, which is too late to fix). Anyway, the cut he gave me was perfect and had me loving it from the start. I've never loved a hair cut as much as this one. I can't wait to come back for another cut. :) Another good thing is that no one tries to upsell you on products. Carlos has even offered to show me how to style my hair at home using my own tools. After feeling adventurous and trying to cut my own hair, I realized I needed professional help. Fortunately, my friend got her hair cut by Selene a few days before my experimental night and raved about her. I booked an appointment and am grateful I did! Selene was attentive and listened to what I wanted. I explained to her that I wanted to keep my length and even out my layers (it was really choppy at this point... I'm pretty sure I had a little rat-tail action going on too). I also have a lot of hair so wanted it to look full while feeling lighter. Selene examined my hair and was very honest with what she could do. I always appreciate someone who is honest and lets me know of what I should expect. Well she went above and beyond. She's very methodical and precise. She did exactly what I asked for: full texture while feeling lighter, and great layers. I definitely would recommend her. I found street parking in front of the salon. Wasn't difficult to find parking when I came mid-week around 4:45pm. Didn't catch the name of the receptionist, but she was so sweet. Actually everyone at the salon was sweet. Would come here again. Long story short, I originally gave this salon one star because Berenice did a very poor job on my hair and refused to admit it and claimed "it was what I asked for" even though my hair literally looked nothing like the pictures I showed her. I asked for balayage ombré(balayage highlights with ombré effect) but instead I left with sparse streaks of highlights which were barely noticeable. She was very rude and mean and refused to fix it for me. However, I went in the next day and the owner, Gil, offered to redo it for me for free even though he was booked that day. He was super friendly and witty and did an amazing job. I recently took advantages of a Groupon offer for a blow dry. I was greeted by a super nice stylist and throughout my whole service she was super nice and we talked the whole time. I requested my hair to be styled in curls. I left the salon and when I arrived to my house, 2 hours later after picking up my kids from school and sitting through traffic I noticed that a piece of my hair kept sticking out, no big deal I thought, the curls will eventually drop and my hair will look nice. (I get my hair done often so I understand this happens) I wake up this morning and this piece of hair is still bothering me..I try brushing it out, teasing it, etc but no luck. I get to work and it is really bothering me, especially since it just got done, usually a blow dry can last 3 days for me. I contemplate calling the salon because I don't want to complain on the stylist because she was super nice and I understand "ish happens" but as somebody who works hard for their money as I know the stylist do to, I figured let me call and hopefully they can just tell me to come in and they can fix it. Long story short, the way the owner handled the situation, horrible. First he gives me the option for me to call Groupon and request my money back as he would process the transaction as not redeemed. I'm thinking to myself, why can't he just offer for me to come in and fix it. No big deal, at least I think so. He then accuses me of sleeping on my hair and trying to call in to have it redone. Then after he noticed my tone changed as I was shocked I was speaking to the owner and this was how he handled things, he FINALLY offered for me to come in so he could personally fix it. I declined and thanked him for his time. I will say this again, I apologize to the stylist, nothing personal, I think you're a sweet person, I was just hoping this could get fixed for my company holiday party this evening. I personally will never step foot in this salon again based on the owners communication skills. As much as I like to review the haircut or the product itself, I believe it is difficult to quantify or grade as haircuts styles, wants, and needs varies with each person. Therefore, the subjectivity of that forces me to review the overall experience, business, and quality of service of this salon. I was fortunate to have met Gilbert, the owner of De La Cruz. Despite the fact that he was occupied with a customer already, he cordially greeted me and received my appointment on time. First impression is very important in any business, and Gilbert definitely scored all points on that front. Process - Gilbert prefers to cut your hair dry. He explained that he rather form the shape of the cut first before shampooing your hair. He believes as hair dries off during the cut, hair expands therefore more difficult to command a shape. Scissors / Clippers - Gilbert opted for clippers, however, I preferred scissors. I vocally suggested I rather have a cut with scissors, if he was comfortable with it, and of course he had no objection. You should vocalize what you want, Gil doesn't seem to mind which method. Communication - Gilbert made effort to keep the conversation going. Within each little small talk topics, he would make suggestions as to how to style, what are the current styles and what he's going to do next. Trimming - I don't know if he cuts your brows, square your back, or razor off fuzz on the back of your neck, under your chin and etc...on a regular basis, but that was pretty cool. Makes you feel like you're getting all the bang for the buck. Details are so important and he scored another point on this as well. Service - He didn't push for the next appointment nor did he push any product. I came in with a coat on and asked if I can hang it somewhere, he offered his closet in the back. He offered a cup of water. It really felt like he owned the business and wanted to make a good first impression, of course to seek repeating customers. I mentioned earlier that he was initially occupied with a customer. Gil took the time to service me while letting the lady wait for her perm to settle is a good business decision. He had the situation under control considering taking care of two customers at once is difficult. Conclusion - I will go back. read more

About 18 months ago, I searched "hair salons, asian hair" in pasadena. I did it about four times, changing salons every time until I met Marissa Chavez at Ravissant. My hair is like cable wire. I have unsuccessfully tried growing it long all my life only to be accused of looking like Roseanna Anna Danna thus resulting in a bob or an "Aniston" circa 1994. I went to Marissa with my problem - help me grow my hair long, address my large forehead, starting at an androgynous Dorothy Hamil length. From from my first visit, she fixed the androgyny issue and gave me the BEST BANGS I have ever had. I'm forty and that is a lot of haircuts. A year later, I have longer hair, reaching the middle of my shoulder blades. I love it. About 6 months ago, she moved to Salon De La Cruz.
