I am elderly, and remember a downtown very different from what now often looks to me like the Tenderloin. This is not the fault of this store, but circumstances now make entering like being processed into a high-security facility. The focus is now on high-end work, and general services like wristwatch band replacement are no longer available. The staff was faultless in civility and instead of saying no, we can't do it--as is so common nowadays--I was referred to another business which I happened to know was reliable. I brought in a diamond necklace that didn't hang quite right, it keeps facing the wrong way. The girl said she knew just what new setting would fix the problem. I was happy. I waited for months until I got the call that it was ready. It wasn't right. The new setting just kept the diamond from sliding back and forth along the chain, it didn't keep the diamond from turning backside-front. And now the chain has been cut and soldered to a fairly plain basket setting, in comparison to the sleek and sophisticated original setting. You know the bumper sticker around town that says "Keep Salem Lame"? Well, I feel like now I have a lame necklace, courtesy of Salem's most visible jeweler. The employee insisted that "the misunderstanding" was on my part, not the store's. Whatever, I still can't wear the necklace, hundreds of dollars later. (I've been going to jewelers for decades without this kind of problem; I won't go to Vernon's ever again. I waited a long time to make this review because I was trying to just forget about it, but the necklace was an anniversary gift and I hate that it is ruined.)

Fortunately, I decided to venture down a search into the more local small businesses and came upon this cool old school & quirky shop. I think the gentleman's name was Jim. Older dude that could pass as your nerdy techy friend who's probably collected every tech gadget since the original Tron came out. Told him what I was looking for but I gradually got discouraged as all he was showing me were the bigger style bigger sound units that are common for home systems. But, alas! With a little patience we revealed a new treasure: smaller desk top speakers! Minor speaker mesh stains on the front but super decent with a little TLC. He was super friendly and chill, even making an effort to find parts that could potentially be missing from this set (like compatible power cord). It also came with an amp box that I've got sitting below my desk table, which was a nice surprise (I keep it plugged in for the deeper sounds or just unplugged for more "regular(?)" crispy audio). All that for a really awesome deal; I think it was something like $15-30 or something crazy like that. Good shit, dude! Thank you. If you're looking for small speakers, I probably snagged the last set but I definitely recommend this place for any help with acheiving 2 things at once: reusing/upcycling any sort of old working electronics and supporting a damn good local friendly small business.
