What an AMAZING clock-repair shop this is and it's amazingly run by a wonderfully charismatic and skilled Master Clocksmith! Here's the story: I was recently visiting my Grandmother in Corvallis, OR and she was distraught because her beautiful old cuckoo clock that she's loved for the last 45 years had stopped working. I felt bad because she was acting like there was a death in the family. I decided I wanted to see if I could get it fixed and completely restored. I asked at a couple antique stores around town and they all mentioned this wonderful place called Clocksmith Cyrus just a few miles away in the town of Shedd. I looked up the place and called, and Clocksmith Cyrus himself answered the phone. He said he had just recently moved his "long-established and very successful clock repair business" up from Santa Rosa, CA. After a few questions about my Grandmother's cuckoo clock, he lit up and said it was a clock he knew well (an original antique Black Forrest cuckoo, apparently). He said I should come right over and bring the clock with me. (I will admit that because I wanted to be sure my Grandmother's clock was in good hands, I did a quick search for reviews of Clocksmith Cyrus in Santa Rosa. I found the Santa Rosa Yelp page for his shop and it was filled with over 100 5-star reviews. People were writing essays praising how amazing this guy was and how he's a "true master" and can fix pretty much any clock that's ever existed. I was duly impressed.) So I drove the cukoo clock over to his shop which is set up in a huge warehouse garage in Shedd. This shop was like a Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory for clocks. It's huge and practically has a museum collection of every kind of amazing antique clock you could imagine. And I'm telling you, this guy was like Willy Wonka himself. He gave me a little tour and a wonderful little master class in the history of clocks. And, once he took a look at my Grandmother's clock he started telling me this amazing, colorful history of this particular line of cukoo clocks. He opened up the clock and immediately found the breakdown in the clock mechanism. He was able to show me how this paerticular antique mechanism worked and said he most certainly could "breathe new life" into this clock that obviously had seen so many decades of life with my Grandmother. I asked him where he locates the antique gears and parts that are needed to fix an old clock like this. He said most of the antique parts aren't made at all anymore, so he sometimes can find the needed piece from a similar antique clock from his huge collection, but more often than not he will remake the rare parts from scratch in his shop. He showed me the "shop" section of his business that was filled with metal milling equipment, drills, sanders, and devices that almost looked like precision surgical equipment. He told me clock making and repair has truly become a lost art and that there aren't that many knowledgeable masters of the craft around anymore. He told me they have almost all literally "died out." I gotta say I love this guy, Clocksmith Cyrus. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about this magical world of clocks that I truly didn't even know existed. When I went to pick up the clock five days later, I brought my Grandmother with me. I really wanted her to see this shop and to meet the wonderful Clocksmith Cyrus. The two of them totally hit it off and he was so kind and generous to show her around and swap stories about the clocks that have played parts in both their lives. Cyrus not only got the clock mechanism running back to tiptop shape, he restored the badly damaged and horribly superglued antique clock hands that had been broken for over a decade. He went above and beyond on this clock in its restoration back to glory. Clocksmith Cyrus brought this beautiful clock back to life and both my Grandmother and I are so grateful. She says that she's fallen in love all over againwith her wonderful old cuckoo and how its melodious cuckoos fill the house once again. I have a clock that's been broken for several years. I finally decided I was going to get it fixed. I couldn't find someone in Corvallis that did repairs, but Cyrus was recommended. I drove out towards Peoria and was surprised to find that Cyrus was going to fix it right then and there as I waited. The lock was battery operated and needed a new mechanism, and Cyrus had it on hand and fixed it within a half hour and for a reasonable price. As it turns out, he is actually a clock maker, and most of the repairs he does are on mechanical mechanisms and restoring antiques. We're very fortunate to have someone this knowledgeable nearby. Cyrus is a wonderful clock smith and a very nice person! He is extremely knowledgeable about clocks and will even take the time to explain what he will be doing to repair your heirloom timepiece. There are very few clock smiths with the skill and expertise that he has in this intricate work. Horology is definitely an art. And as a bonus, his prices are extremely fair and reasonable.
