I was pleasantly surprised. Growing up in an Italian family from Brooklyn I'm pretty spoiled my whole life with great Italian food so I'm a tough critic. For appetizers we had baked claims and the eggplant rollatini. The eggplant rollatini was cooked perfectly. It was light and the breading didn't fall apart. The baked claims was incredible that I had to dip the bread in that delicious oreganata and I usually don't do that in restaurants but it was too good. My main course was the spaghetti bolognese and I was relieved that there wasn't some sort of vegetable in there to give it a sweeter taste like peas or carrots as they do in some other restaurants. If I have one critique is that there was a lot of meat and I would of liked to taste more of his sauce because every Italian cook needs a signature sauce and I wanted to taste more of his. The restaurant is a little pricey but the portions are generous and the food is fantastic. When you sit down in a nice place with great food in a bougie area that has linens you have to expect to pay but in my opinion worth it. I do recommend Sal D's for the comfortable atmosphere, interior design and convenient parking. However, I'm not completely certain of the food and aspect of late dining. We arrived about 7:15 with numerous tables occupied. Greeted nicely, we were asked where we wanted to sit, which was great. Water was eventually brought to us and our waitress was pleasant. I ordered a dish that is normally in a red sauce, but white sauce was also offered. I chose the white, but it lacked flavor. The calamari appetizer was tasty, but rubbery as calamari can be. The other fish dish, I was told was tasty. Soon after we finished, dessert was offered, to which we declined. Then the bill came. We continued to sit and chat. I started seeing unhappy faces and came to realize we were the last diners. Perhaps the restaurant should inform late diners prior to seating that it closed at a certain time. It was only about 8:30. I think I need to re-visit Sal D's at an earlier time and try other dishes, hence the three star rating. read more

As we usually do, this past Saturday we went for dinner at Sal D's. There were empty tables but they tried to sit us at this tiny table right outside the kitchen. We have sat there before, and believe me, you don't want to have your Saturday night dinner there unless you don't mind being bumped continuously as the very busy waiters fly out of the kitchen. The usual young lady in charge was not up front. Instead, some weird woman, when we offered to wait at the bar until a table for two opened up, said that wouldn't be possible because after all, it's Saturday night! She had to save the tables for three or more people. She's in the wrong line of work. Long story short, we crossed the street and had a delicious meal at Piccolo's. We came for dinner for my mom's 90th birthday and it was lovely. The restaurant gets very busy and only takes reservations for large parties so arrive early. The restaurant is on the small side and can get noisy when it's full. Our waiter was very nice and was attentive but not intrusive which was excellent. The food was excellent. Everyone really enjoyed their meal. The portion sizes are very large so go hungry. The only issue was dessert. We were given the dessert menu and we ordered. The waiter came back and said what we ordered was not available. He then made a suggestion to my mom what to have because it was her birthday. Well he came back and said that choice was not available either! Normally this would not have been an issue but it was my mom's 90th birthday. Turns out there were only 3 things available on the dessert menu. We ordered the cannolis. Unfortunately they were not as good as an Italian bakery cannoli. The dessert and the issue we had with the dessert wasn't enough to change my rating or my recommendation of this restaurant. It's a very good local Italian choice. read more

This would have been 4-5 stars, if not for the rushed feeling at the end of the night. Came here last night with a family member that I very rarely get to see between 7 and 7:30pm. It was definitely busy, but the service was great and the food was wonderful. Was very happy with the experience. That was until 8:30pm rolled around. Granted, we did not realize the restaurant closed at 8:30pm - we were so tied up in catching up, and honestly would have guessed a modest 9pm closing time if we had been thinking about it. No joke, starting right at 8:32pm, someone was peeking around the corner or coming up to the table and staring at the bill every 30 seconds to 2 minutes. When my family member went to the restroom for all of a minute and a half, the bill was checked on twice. That's the only reason we realized maybe this restaurant was closing. We still had wine left and weren't interested in chugging it, but we were conscious that we should head out shortly. The bill was checked on, subtly and not so subtly, no less than 6 times between 8:32 and 8:45. That is not an exaggeration. We grew up working in the restaurant industry and we understand everyone wants to go home at the end of the night, and the frustration of people staying WELL past close (especially on a Sunday), but this was literally 10-15 minutes past close and the bill was already dropped. There were other tables still in the restaurant. The hovering was unnecessary. We were so put off by this uncomfortable behavior. Don't think we'll try it again here. read more

We picked up dinner on Friday night for the 2nd time this month. The first time was SO much better! The 2nd time was less than mediocre for me but okay for the BF. I ordered Zuppe de pesce from Mike who answered the phone. He was very nice. I told him gluten free thinking they might add a piece of bread. I called back and got a very cranky woman and reminded her to please make sure it's gluten free. I think she heard me wrong and changed my order to gluten free pasta with seafood. I ordered shrimp scampi pasta for BF and he liked it, hence the 3 stars instead of 2 Their gluten free pasta is sticky and gummy and they forgot to add extra marinara as requested. Too many calamari rings and not enough seafood. I had a few bites of leftover pasta last night then threw the rest in the trash. Very disappointing!!! read more

I called to make a reservation for dinner for me and my wife for her 60th birthday they told me they won't take reservations for two people. I told them that i was a regular customer and i was taking my wife to a show at 7pm and wanted to come in at 5pm they refused. not that the place is anything special other then convenient . Sal D's is the most underrated Italian place in Huntington. Been coming here for what seems like decades. It was my late mother's favorite restaurant period and she's been gone 10 years, so their wonderful food always reminds me of her. It was a tradition for my wife's family too, my father-in-law is a big fan so Sal D's is always a good choice for our family dinners. The specials are always great. What a great place. Had the antipasto, spicy calamari, and backed clams as appetizers. All were excellent. The montepulciano wine was great. They have the kind of menu that is interesting and creative while being affordable and gives you the feeling of family. Anything in their Oreganata style is my favorite, but everything you order is going to be good. My wife is obsessed with their Rigatoni Alla Vodka- simple dish made to perfection. Don't sleep on the bar pies, salads and baked clams. Tiramisu desert is very good. We also get catering from them for parties a few times a year, always a crowd favorite. It was ricotta within it and melted mozzarella on top. The eggplant was perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth. I ordered it as my main dish since I wasn't very hungry and it was perfectly filling. The Mediterranean Paloma was the best Paloma I've ever had. The grapefruit and tequila was perfectly balanced and was not sour. My friend had a glass of Malbec. They have a small full bar as you enter to the right and a dining room with traditional wood chairs and tables that can be a noisy when crowded. Sal D's serves traditional Italian dishes with menu specials on most occasions. One could also find on the menu various bar pies such as thin crusted Margarita pizza and zuppa di clams which I will order on my next visit. With the waitress recommendation, I ordered the bronzino in a piccata sauce with artichokes that was not on their menu. The dish was wonderful and I was very appreciative that they accommodated me with a special meal request. Our party also order the artichoke & burrata as an appetizer long with glasses of wine. Walked in on the Friday night before Valentine's Day and was expecting a wait but was nicely surprised that there was none. The waitress seemed a little overworked but pleasant enough. We started w the stuffed artichoke and I have to say it was the best one I've ever eaten at a restaurant. I loved it! So we went on to a pizza with onions which was awesome too! This is where the review gets wonky. We ordered the seafood risotto which I didn't really care for. It was on the bland side and they did not use the right kind of rice for risotto. It was just your regular white rice which was over cooked and not too yummy. So just then, the waitress from the table behind me dumps a glass of red wine on my coat, pants and my cellphone! Total pandemonium! No not total but my coat was a light color and then it was red! So they offer to bring it to the dry cleaners the next day and comped 1/2 of our meal.
