Its alright, theres a place just like this at the livingston mall - 'Sarku'. This place has a similar menu but not quite as good. The teriyaki chicken isn't spectacular but it tastes good and is filling. I've sampled some other dishes and they're ok too. I'd say if you're looking for real deal japanese cuisine you might be disappointed. The service is pretty quick and the cook does it right there at the counter. There are several tables and 2 tvs on. It looks clean and the staff there will bring out your food if you stay to eat. Also they will give you extra condiments upon request. This place may be better for take out as a change from the chinese take out spots in town and opposed to sitting in for a intimate meal like the other various japanese spots. read more

On first glance, South Orange is oversaturated with Japanese food spots. As of the date of this Yelp review, there are FIVE Japanese eateries in SO - Ariyoshi, Harusame, Yama, Pandang, and now Sakura Grill. However, there is enough differentiation where each has its own unique feel and specialty. So what is the deal with Sakura Grill? It's inexpensively priced, Japanese fast food - teriyaki on the grill and your standard items (e.g. sushi rolls, miso soup, edamame). It's like a souped up version of Sakura Japan at the Livingston Mall food court, but with more selections. Seton Hall students should make this a regular spot - you get your bang for your buck here and the food is tasty! The inside has a good number of tables and the drink/condiment/utensil hub is clean. They have bottle drinks, fountain drinks, and sweetened/unsweetened iced tea. I thought it was cool that they have Sriracha sauce, but I couldn't tell if the soy sauce there was the Chinese take-out kind or could also be used for sushi rolls. Staff at Sakura Grill were very friendly. Overall, it's a nice spot to grab some fast eats in the area. read more

The food at this restaurant is subpar and I probably will not be eating here again. I ordered a chicken teriyaki salad which was supposed to have lettuce, tomato, cucumber and red onion in it. It definitely had lettuce, I saw 1 slice of tomato and about 3 pieces of cut red onion. Also my lettuce wasn't even properly chopped there were huge pieces of lettuce in it let alone the root of the lettuce. Pretty much a big disappointment. read more

We were recommended here for dinner and told it had amazing food. This was far from the truth, first off the tofu was soggy, the rice crunchy and there was no flavour in the teriyaki sauce. This was one meal. The other meal was beef teriyaki but was just beef gristle, and overcooked. We will be sure to never come here again. read more

So i just moved to SO and today was the first day i ordered lunch. I wass supposed to go somewhere else but i was closed because of the snow so i ended up in Sakura Teriyaki. I go the chicken teriyaki and my friend got short ribs teriyaki both with fried rice. It smelled delicious, when we opend it at home it looked pretty big ( i was actually surprised because i had a lot of chicken in my dish, and my boyfriend just a few ribs). So we started eating, and i was ok with my dish, nothing special but not bad either, so i shared some chicken with my boyfriend and i tried his ribs, and they were not good. I mean, there was a weird taste to it, i simply did not like it. He admitted that chicken was a lot better. It was my first time ordering from this establishment, and ordered rolls and teriyaki for delivery (we were hungry). The snow made it difficult to make the trek over. They said delivery would take about 30-40 min, and they were nearly on time. Better in comparison to others who had called for delivery. We ordered the shrimp teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, shrimp tempura/rainbow/salmon/Philadelphia rolls. Food was good and filling. We definitely had leftovers! I WAS a regular customer at Sakura Teriyaki. As usual, I phoned in my order before driving to pick up. When I arrived home, I checked the bag but, I didn't receive what I had ordered. I immediately called back and spoke with the lady who took my order. She repeated my order and when I told her that was not what she gave me, she immediately said that she didn't check the bag before giving it to me. She then asked me to come back and pick up what I had ordered. I asked her to deliver it to me instead. She then said that I will need to return the wrong item when my food is delivered. When the delivery person came to the door, he asked me for the food that was mistakenly given to me. I gave it to him and he gave me what I had originally ordered. What were they going to do with it? Were they going to sell it to someone else? Even if it were an honest mistake, they shouldn't have asked for the food back. Just the thought scares me. Very disappointed. read more

I came here on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 with my 10 year old son. He was given $20 to order his sushi as I sat at the bar table. Shortly after, he comes to me and says that the guy said that he needed $2 more. I said, he said WHAT???? He repeats it to me. I STORM up to the counter and the guy is still holding the $20. I ask the woman that's usually at the register, "WHAT DID HE ORDER?" With an angry look on my face. She repeats his order and then says, "he has enough money!" Now a couple of things crossed my mind. A) slide both of them across the counter multiple times and B) slam both of their faces on the grill. Best believe they were walking on eggshells before I left. One more reason I would move to South Orange if I had to stay in New Jersey for good, a place like this that is not a sit-down and wait service restaurant, a place like the Sarku Japan locations you find in malls where you can order fast inexpensive Japanese food and sit and eat, as there are plenty of tables. I have never seen a place like this before that was not a Sarku Japan in a mall. Other Japanese eateries are proper wait-service restaurants. I didn't have a look at the full menu, but they will prepare sushi for you here as well as what they cook for you on the hibachi grill at the counter. It's great. Of course, typical Chinese staff (not Japanese) who probably don't know much from Japanese cuisine, but this place is quite unique in town and maybe even beyond. I came in in a huge rush and was at first going to have my food to stay, but then told them I needed it quickly packed up to go since I needed to rush to a performance and was running out of time. Even as I ate my chicken teriyaki bento box and California rolls a couple of hours later, it was all still deliciously tasty. I will be back, as I like South Orange and want to spend more time there getting to know the town. read more

This place may not even be a worthy enough establishment to get a review from me. Never in my life have I been through such a horrible dining experience. The place was somewhat empty when I entered but I didn't think much of it. After I placed my order, the cook reached underneath the grill and scooped out a chunk of what I pray to God was chicken from a large dirty bucket. Probably one of the most disgusting and unappetizing sights you could see before eating a meal. The rice was dry and cold, and the chicken was rather soggy and chewy. Maybe if I had more than a few pieces of chicken I could try and say better thing about it. I have been told by many of my colleagues to not eat food from here, however I only learned my lesson after speeding majority of the night running to the bathroom because of my upset stomach.
