Sake Cafe doesn't have sake, but what it does have is killer sushi. Basic rolls are $4-$5, specialty rolls are $11-$15 and appetizers are $4-$9. VERY reasonable, I think. It's BYOB, with a wine shop two doors down. You can't beat it! The service was OK - very friendly and accommodating, but perhaps a bit slow. But, in their defense, the place was packed! So my husband and I tried this place tonight on the recommendation of some of my fellow Yelpers. We were really disappointed. First off, it's dark in there. There's lots of dark wood too. "Very masculine" is all I kept thinking. I felt the place needed some more decoration. I did not feel comfortable or cozy there. The music was some kind of Japanese pop. There are two pretty good sized televisions behind the bar. They had ESPN and ESPN2 on them. So if you want to watch the game, have beer and eat sushi, this might be your place. The servers had no personality whatsoever and were not very friendly. The service was good. Perhaps a little too good. My husband put his miso bowl on the table for a few seconds while he were trading soup bowls, because he had eaten all most all of the miso and I thought we were supposed to be sharing. One of the ladies came over and took the bowl off the table. Now granted there wasn't much left in it but we didn't leave the bowl on the table very long. The miso soup was good. The spinach and tofu soup was very good and was enough for two people. The sushi was well presented.. The carrot flower on the toothpick sticking out of a slice of cucumber was a cute touch. Ok, my first review did not do this place justice. They must've worked out all the grand opening kinks, because I've been back here at least three times and the sushi has been amazing. So fresh and fatty, puts the other Capital District sushi places to shame. I was just about to give up on their Thai menu, but I decided to try their Pad Kee Mow (Drunkman's Noodles). It was perfect! With the closing of Saso's, I now have to find a new spot for sushi. First off, can I just say how sick of pan-Asian type places? I'm tired of Japanese/ Chinese, Thai/Sushi, etc. I'd much prefer a restaurant focus one cuisine and do it really well rather than do two in a mediocre fashion. That said, I haven't tried the Thai here so maybe I'm being a bit harsh. The decor here could use some work. I realize they're probably going for the simple look, but right now it's perhaps a bit too austere. Maybe a couple of plants or things hanging on the wall could add some charm, especially considering how dark it is in here. Despite the name, it seems like they may not have their liquor license yet. There were no sake menus anywhere and the large bar was totally devoid of liquor and wine bottles and instead seemed to be serving as storage. The sushi menu's pretty basic, but with a few rolls that sound kind of cool, including one with kiwi. The fancy rolls range from $11 up. The regular sushi rolls are extremely affordable....most of the fish ones are $4.50 for a standard six pieces while the vegetarian ones are $3.50. I wish there was a little more in the way of fish selection. I didn't see rolls with any fish either than tuna or salmon, with the exception of an eel roll. Did I miss something? Oh right, the requisite California roll too. I had the Alaskan roll (smoked salmon, avocado,) the Crazy Couple roll (spicy yellowfin and tuna) and an oshinko roll( I believe it's Japanese burdock root.) They were all rolled nicely, no warm rice (warm sushi rice is a major pet peeve) and fresh -- no funky aftertaste to speak of. It was...decent, good really. I guess I'm still in Saso's mourning. I miss the more creative combinations. I miss the smoked mussels and spinach roll, the indulgence roll (crab, salmon, avocado topped with amazing black caviar that popped in your mouth) and rolls made with things like escolar, fluke and mackerel. I'll have to give the sashimi a try next time. I was also bummed they didn't have those warm hand towels and didn't automatically serve you green tea. Maybe because it's still summer? A friend recommended this place to me, so we decided to check it out together. The exterior has tables for open-air dining and the interior is somewhat quaint. The one thing that really bugged me about the place was that it was too damn dark. My eyes were able to focus in the near darkness after about five minutes, but luckily, I only had a maximum viewing distance of two feet to deal with. The sushi was very delicious, but we did notice a few typos on the menu, which we were able to laugh about, despite the confusion that they added to our experience. Had really good fresh tasting food here for lunch. I play it safe with chinese when I go to new places so I got the lunch special of general tso's chicken comes with a nice sized amount of white rice and a soup or salad. I got the miso soup which tasted the same as other places I've gotten. Their chicken you can tell is actual real chicken and not the processed crap that take out spots use, sauce had great flavor. I got a cold sake (bubbly, served in a pink bottle-wish I could remember the name) and it was quite refreshing. Friend got the godzilla roll which was presented nicely and was pretty tasty even though I have yet to acquire a taste for sushi. I went here on a Friday night with some friends around 6. We figured we should make reservations since it was Friday after work and new Scotland ave- we called the day before and whoever answered the phone made it sound like reservations were necessary as they would be full- when we got there we were one of about 3 tables- no big deal just comical. Anyways, we ordered a variety of sushi options- all decent, but not the greatest sushi in the area....but still fresh, fair in price, with a cute presentation. Sake doesn't have some of the "pull out all the stops" showmanship that some of the other sushi places in the area have, and it also doesn't have some of the over the top flavor combos either but it had some good sushi that isn't trying too hard. The first time I had the sushi combination platter. I was pleasantly surprised to get slightly larger portions than expected. The quality was fine, but nothing particularly special. My second time dining here I went with the Yellow Thai Chicken Curry. The broth is deliciously flavorful and filled with a good amount of chicken meat and veggies. We only got delivery from Sake Cafe, so I can't speak to the ambiance or the service other than the woman over the phone who took my order who did not speak much English and the delivery guy who did but chose not to. But what I can say was that everything that we ordered was fresh, tasted good enough and arrived in a somewhat timely manner (only about 10 minutes after they promised it). We ordered a Philly roll, a spicy crunchy tuna roll, a crunchy shrimp and crab roll, a few spring rolls and a Godzilla roll and I thought everything they brought was not too shabby. The flavors went well together, I didn't feel like any of the sushi needed the soy sauce or wasabi too much and the spring rolls were just crispy enough to be pleasant. We also ordered a beef salad that was decent. The beef was cooked well and tasted good but the amount and flavor of the onions was extremely overpowering. This place is our friends' go-to for take out sushi in Albany, and I would probably eat here again if it's this consistently good. I thought the prices were relatively good, but you can easily spend a lot if you're not careful. I know my friends also get the chicken and broccoli quite a bit from here and are big fans of that, so if you're not a sushi fan, try that! Cliffnotes: 5 star food with 3 star service during our visit. Very reasonable prices. This IS a BYOB establishment. When we went (party of four) it was an extremely busy Saturday night, we had a 7:45 reservation and we were seated right around then. We sat in a corner so I could see the entire place. Right off the bat the server came over and asked us for a drink order, we all got hot Tea because it was freezing out, and he returned with it. Then he ran around the restaurant completely ignoring us for about 10 or so minutes. This bothered me because he wasn't really doing anything as far as I could tell except helping bus tables and cleaning wine glasses for BYOB tables that came in after us. When he did finally return we ordered all of our food and asked for more tea. We also asked for water that we had not received (didn't ask when we ordered tea) and he informed us we would have to wait because they had run out of glasses, which is kind of amateur hour. Our appetizers- Shumai, Soups all around, a seaweed salad, and an "amazing pancake". They came out quickly in a kind of staccato pace, Seaweed salad, then 2 hot and sour soups, then shumai, then 2 more soups (tom young). The Shumai was good not great, soups were also good, the hot and sour better than the tom young. The Amazing pancake came later from the Sushi bar, it was different but rather good, a kind of sushi pizza with raw tuna, panko, japanese mayo, and shredded mango on an scallion pancake thingy. I think it was after this waters arrived in bar glasses (pilsner I believe). As dinner went the service got better. Sushi arrived next. We got Spicy Girl roll, California Roll, Rising Sun I think, and Rainbow. As noted in other reviews the Sushi was very good with excellent fish quality and preparation. We also ordered crispy duck and a chili beef, both of which were very good. Towards the end of the meal the service actually got over attentive, with the server asking us over and over (I think we counted four times) if everything was good. We decided to try this place after reading Steve Barnes of the TU's review, where he said, "Now that Saso's Japanese Noodle House has closed, Sake Café has the best sushi in the Capital Region." I've had a craving for sushi for awhile, and this was only a five minute drive away, so off we went. At around 7pm on a Friday night, the place was hoppin', but we were pleasantly surprised to be seated right away at a table. When we left about an hour later, there were only a handful of people waiting to be seated. Also, as a note: since I'm pretty sure they still don't have a liquor license, I think this place may be byob, because I swear every table but ours had a bottle of wine. In terms of the decor, I actually liked it. It was simple, but I did catch some decorations here and there. I actually appreciated seeing the bare, dark wood tables. Within minutes had our miso soup in front of us. Being quasi-sick, the miso soup was perfect because it was yummy and had that "comfort" food factor. After the soup, during one of our many tea top-offs, we were told that our sushi might take a little longer than usual. No big deal, we thought to ourselves, the sushi bar is packed so we weren't expecting anything instantaneous. Even so, I don't think it was ten minutes between when our soup was cleared away to when our sushi was delivered. They did forget one piece of the fiance's sushi, but we flagged down someone who brought it over right away. Seeing as the place was so busy, this was only minor. I'm guessing someone grabbed the plate before the last piece was placed on it...like I said, minor. When everything was all said and done, we were well-fed and satisfied in about an hour (remarkable considering how packed it was). We didn't break the bank, either: everything including tip was a bit less than $40. You can easily do things on the cheap here if you try, but you can also order a bit of everything and some specials and easily get into the $75 range for two. I like that kind of price flexibility. Sure, I agree the sushi menu is for the most part basic, but Sake Cafe does justice to the sushi they do offer. Everything was fresh, well-made, and without even a hint of fishy aftertaste. I decided to give this place a try after hearing a few raves about it from some friends. Considering I haven't been about to find any good sushi around Albany, I finally made my way here with some friends for dinner. My first experience was not good, but one week later I decided to give it another try. During my first visit, I wanted to give the sushi a try, since it is a sushi restaurant, after all. We drove to the back parking lot, which wasn't really a parking lot a all. There were no lines, and the asphalt was not leveled. Also, because it was the same lot for three or four other restaurants, there wasn't enough spots (some people couldn't park and took up more than one space....) So we came through the back door and asked to be seated outdoor on the street side. As a tip, DONT! there were lots of bugs and they kept getting in our water. Once seated, it took a while for a waitress to come around to serve us. Once she got our drink orders, it took another 5-10 minutes before they came back to take our food orders. I ordered the Spicy girl roll ($13) and a New York roll ($4.5). The spicy girl roll consisted of "spicy crunchy tuna and salmon inside, top with spicy and crunchy yellowtail and caviar served with special sauce." The plate came out looking really nice, with the special sauces on the side as a drawing of birds flying over a sunset. The size of the roll was the size of your average tuna roll or salmon roll. Whatever "spicy crunchy tuna and salmon" was, I didn't feel any crunch. There were tempura bits in there, but the grains were so small, it was barely noticable. instead of the salmon and tuna in there separate pieces, it was mushed together into a pasty texture. Same with the yellowtail. It looks like a spicy tuna, but much creamier. The New York roll was "fresh salmon and cucumber and avocado." There was really nothing special about this roll. It was just part of there cheap regular rolls that is really easy to make. Overall, I wasn't satisfied with the quality of sushi nor was I with the service. However, I decided to give the restaurant another shot to redeem itself. This time, I ordered from the other part of their menu. Mango Shrimp ($13) and my friend ordered pad thai ($10). Boy, were we in for a surprise. The mango shrimp consisted of mainly snow peas with red and green bell peppers, a few mango chunks, and about 5-6 medium size shrimps. I emphasize on MAINLY SNOW PEAS. I should have ordered something with a description (which was only 6 of the 20 items from the kitchen entree). The pad thai was even more surprising. It was wet and and the noodles were white. It wasn't even sweet. I'm not sure how pad thai is normally made in Albany, but being from California, pad thai are typically dry, yellow, and a hint of sweetness. Both me and my friend was shocked. Still, I don't know what all the rave for this place is about...I think next time I'll try a place that knows what it wants to be in one specific cuisine (and good at it) then a place that has no idea what it wants to specialize in (Japanese, Thai, and Chinese) and is below average... read more

I just went with a group of friends, and while I'm torn between Sushi Tei and Sake Cafe... I have to say that Sake Cafe is a great sushi restaurant (if not the best in the region... I wish I had dishes from both places right in front of me). The price is also pretty reasonable, especially the "boats." As you might guess, my group got one of the 75 piece "boats," which had a nice selection of rolls and fish... it didn't blow me away... but it was very good. However, I absolutely loved our seperate order of the Sake Cafe Spicy Mix appetizer, which is an assortment of fish pieces served in a really delicious spicy and sour sauce. That dish was definitely something special... and it makes me very interested in returning to try other atypical offerings. The ambience is nice, or at least nicer than Sushi Tei's. Our waitress really tried... but unfortunately her English was not very good, and my group had to spend a fair amount of time repeating our orders until we got it straight. While this establishment has a sterling reputation for delivery, I must admit that I do enjoy eating in. The specials include truly fresh fish. The presentation on plate is top notch. Their selection of beverages now includes alcoholic offerings... and their Saki choices are among the best. I prefer "Nama" or raw saki, usually found nowhere outside Japan. The ferment is unpasteurized, and includes both yeasts and Koji molds with health advantages not found in 99+% of Saki's. Combine this with fresh fish served in inventive ways, and you get a truly memorable dining experience. I'm lucky to have this in my neighborhood. read more

Some of my closest friends had been raving about Sake Cafe for a while, so when my family made a surprise stopover in Albany, I was excited to try the place. Since they serve cooked dishes as well as sushi and sashimi, and are within walking distance (on a nice day) from Center Square, the restaurant fit the bill to please people with differing tastes. We ordered the Amazing Pancake and Tuna dumpling for the table to start. Both included amazingly succulent tuna and pleasurable flavor combinations, but the Tuna Dumpling was truly amazing. As described to us by our friendly and informed waiter, the tuna is pounded very thinly and formed into a dumpling much in the same way a traditional dough-clad dumpling would be. It was stuffed with crab meat (that appeared upon examination to have been finely extruded somehow) and accompanied by a tasty but not overpowering sauce. For our meals, our party ordered the Thai Basil Chicken, Pad Thai, a Spicy Yellowtail roll, Sweet potato roll and the Kiwi Salmon roll with tobiko. Although the Thai Basil was spicy and delicious, the Pad Thai was a little flat. Regardless, all of the rolls we ordered were absolutely fantastic. I may have preferred the Spicy roll a little spicier, but the Kiwi Salmon roll was hands down the best piece if sushi I have ever eaten (and maybe the prettiest too). The pinks and greens of the asparagus and salmon filled roll were complimented in flavor and visage by the thinly sliced emerald kiwi "wrapper" gently drizzled with tropical fruit sauce. The tiny glistening tobiko were a perfect crowning addition adding an extra playful *pop* and pushing this roll to the top of my "must order again" list. For dessert, we ordered Mango sticky rice, green tea and vanilla ice creams and the carrot cake. I am told that the carrot cake was very good and although I did not try the vanilla ice cream, the green tea was delicious and the Mango sticky rice was sticky and fruity-fresh without being too sweet. In the end, I have no qualms bestowing a 5-star rating upon Sake Cafe. Our collective dining experience: the delicate and fresh sushi, friendly and helpful servers combined with the priceless experience of watching family members not known for eating adventurously go back for seconds, ensures that we will be going back to sushi cafe for another round as soon as it is cool enough to walk a few blocks. read more

Located on New Scotland amidst a string of other cafe seating dining options, this is a reasonably priced place that does sushi and other Asian options reliably well. You're not going for ambiance; the inside is dark and unremarkable and the soundtrack of Asian pop is infernal. Sitting outside gives you good people watching opportunities, however. But, again, this place is about the food. I'm partial to the chicken satay appetizer, and the salty edamame for starters. All the sushi is fresh and delicious; I've tried most of it and haven't ever been disappointed. Oh, and there are plenty of sake choices if that's what interests you. Finally, the staff is attentive and helpful, and you will likely find yourself in the company of staff from other restaurants if you park yourself at the bar (always a good sign). read more

The sushi sashimi combo for one was very fresh and flavorful and my dinner companions said that the Thai chicken and vegetables was tasty and well prepared. The service was great. The sushi is one if the better capital district options and this is coming from someone who regularly consumes sushi on the west coast so the bar is quite high! The presentation is unique and creative. I've been here several times and never have been disappointed.
