    Boston roll

Shrimp shumai- delicious Eel roll & shrimp tempura- delicious Boston roll- lacking. I included a photo below, but it was mostly cucumber and lettuce. Typically I'm used to a Boston roll having a larger piece of crab, avocado and shrimp. Seems like they have a different rendition of this roll! It was still tasty, just unexpected.

    5. Sashimi Deluxe

Came here for dinner and enjoyed the sashimi deluxe (I think) and my boyfriend ordered the spicy beef ramen. The sashimi was pretty fresh and there was one white fish that they wrapped around shiso which I thought was a nice touch since I love shiso. The "ramen" was really very good, but they should consider renaming it, because it's not what we expected at all. When you see beef ramen on the menu at a sushi/Japanese-ish restaurant, you aren't expecting clearly Chinese style noodle soup with mala flavoring, which is what we got. It's more like a beef Mala noodle soup, which was really good, but that's because we happen to like that too. Service was attentive and started us with ice water as soon as we sat down. They did say it was $6 extra to switch out tuna in the sashimi combo for something else since we don't really like tuna, which was ridiculous, but I think there was some sort of miscommunication going on. Some of the special rolls looked a little overpriced but interesting. 3.5 stars and I would come back to try other things for sure

    3. Green Paper Roll

Awesome place with excellent attentive service! Had the best chicken satay served with a delicious peanut sauce, a green paper roll, and tofu pad Thai ( I wanted to try everything!) Everything was amazing, not greasy, fresh. The pad Thai was probably the best I've had! Cannot wait to return!

Excellent sushi. Best black pepper chicken I'd ever had. Prompt service for a Saturday evening. Wonderful presentation. Menu was a touch spendy for my taste, but the food was worth every penny.

Maki: spicy salmon, eel cucumber.  Nigiri: maguro, hamachi, hirame, saba, toro; unagi, tamago, ikura. 2019 01 03. S23.

I returned to this small dimly lit restaurant for a seat at the sushi bar / alcohol bar (photo). The specials menu on the back wall listed an extremely good price for toro - not sure if it was going to be ohtoro or (more likely) chutoro, but I'll order it either way. Despite other reviews you may have read, Sake Cafe has had their liquor since at least December 2017. Behind their bar was sake, beer, wine and a few liquor bottles. The official website to check any NYS liquor license is: https://sla.ny.gov/public-license-query (usually good within about 30 days). I looked through the menu while Japanese pop music lingered in the background over the muted television news. The music was appropriate, considering the cartoonish sushi mural along one entire wall. The staff was changing from lunch menu to dinner, so I watched the servers change over all the other place settings from paper to cloth napkins about five minutes after I ordered a couple of small rolls and eight nigiri. The servers were attentive enough, and pretty quick, but the restaurant was barely occupied. This meant that the one chef had no other distractions when he had to finish the piece he forgot to make, just as I realized it was missing. Small mistakes might be forgiven during a Saturday night rush, but not if there is only one order ticket to prepare. The soup was presentable, and the rice was well flavored, but the overall presentation of the main was uneven. I never did like artificial decorations, such as the drink umbrella and little blue neon light used on my plate under the shredded diakon. The maki were pleasant, but the nigiri needed some work, though the taste was acceptable, even without wasabi under each piece of fish. For the individual pieces, the slice of mackerel was broken into several unappetizing pieces atop the rice (photo). The very small scrap of nori seaweed around the nigiri of the egg custard and the tiny grilled eel did not wrap all the way around to secure the item to the rice. But at least it was decorative. These may seem like petty concerns, but presentation and interaction with the chefs has always been a huge part of my experience. I am sure I'll return soon, but it seems as if only a few very small things are holding them back from their potential. 2019 01 03. S23.

It was well balanced and tasty. The food itself was delicious and fresh tasting. We paced our selves ordering only much as we could eat in one order. Among my favorites were the passion roll, shrimp yakitori and mango tango. We ordered a lot of sashimi and it tasted fresh and most importantly we felt great afterwards. We finished our meal with green tea ice cream. It was a good experience overall.

No liquor license, so no sake, but lots and lots of bubble-tea. And almost no interaction with sushi chef (and no seating at sushi bar) - all orders are placed and paid for on one of two digital podiums. Oh, yeah. You are probably going to want to rub your waribashi together to break off any splinters or sharp edges. Not the best quality. Unfortunately, the food itself is also unremarkable. The sushi rice was very lightly seasoned. The nori wrap was so tiny on the nigiri tamago and unagi, there is no possibility that it could hold each piece together. Maybe the owner only allows the chef to use 1 sheet of nori each day. The ikura on the gunkenmaki didn't have that little "pop" when you bite on one, confirming the freshness. And the barely spicy salmon maki was partially minced salmon, with a bit too much non-salmon filler. I'm sure the college kids love this place. 2023 05 31. S14.

I usually like getting a "Salmon Lovers" from the place in Stuyvesant (Mr Fuji sushi) or Asian Tea House in Rensselaer. Asian tea house's salmon lovers is really good, but they are further away and it's like $28. Fuji sushi is more comparable in price to Oishi, but the salmon isn't as buttery and delicious. Pretty much every time I have ordered now from Oishi I'm extremely pleased with the salmon and have even tried a few more menu items. My husband loves the fried coconut shrimp on their app menu. The shrimp tempura roll is a bit overwhelming but also good. The salmon/avocado roll is also great.

When we entered there was no host at the counter, we were just standing there for a minute or two before we started searching for someone. Finally, a lady came out the back kitchen and seated us. We just wanted a small lunch since we were planning on picking up food from Che Figata later that evening. Well, I guess there is no regular menu only the all you can eat buffet menu ($28 each)? The way it works is there is actually no buffet at all, you must place an order for items on the buffet menu then wait for the food to be delivered. If you're still hungry and want more you need to place another order. On one hand, your food would be fresh and not sitting out on a buffet; alternatively, most people will fill up before their second or third item arrives. Something to note is you can only order 2 pieces of sushi or sashimi per order, and one sushi roll per order. It wasn't too busy; however, customers that were already seated were just twiddling their thumbs waiting for more food to arrive and there was only one server and she didn't look like much of a go-getter. After about 5-minutes of waiting around for something to happen we decided it would be better if we got the hell out of there before we were stuck sitting around like everyone else. I guess this concept works as this restaurant does have good reviews, but I just didn't like the vibe and couldn't risk a potential bad experience on Mother's Day. Sorry Sushi Shine, we decided to go to Sawa Shushi Bistro instead and had a wonderful experience there.

Wouldn't have thought I would have tried (eaten years ago traveling in Asia): razor clams, snail, frog leg, crawfish, abalone cooked in different ways (a very pricey seafood- in garlic sauce with vermicelli noodles & in Buddha Jumps Over the Wall herbal soup). Other seafood items included: ONE whole lobster per person (not sure if this was specifically for the holiday), blue stone crab, crab legs, shrimp many different ways (cocktail, boiled in shell & dusted with seasoning, battered & fried for "Coconut Shrimp" kind of like sweet walnut shrimp), a raw bar area, grilled oysters, oysters & XO sauce... The sauteed string beans were good, pineapple sticky rice. The rice in the large rice cooker was large short-grain with varying types of doness (some crispy, some wet...). The short ribs, pepper beef, & pork belly cubes were lukewarm, not very flavorful & a bit tough. The dim sum options in the steamers were probably great when they first came out, but my shrimp crystal dumpling wrapper was tough and crispy on the edges & mushy shrimp & black sesame seeds inside & the lava custard bun was congealed & lukewarm. There's a few soups like hot & sour, broth for wonton, an herbal chicken & goji berry (good for eyesight). There was a dessert area with a lot of fresh fruit, cake & pudding cups (catering-like quality though), almond cookies & herbal jelly, an ice cream bar case, a few canned K-pop sodas, refrigerator of milk tea, passionfruit juice, mango sago, etc. & 3 cases of hot pot ingredients including various fish meatballs, tofu puffs, udon & potato noodles, watercress, chrysanthemum leaves, napa cabbage, mixed mushrooms, frozen thinly sliced pork belly, beef, and lamb. I didn't get to try the mad-to-order ramen & noodle soup. There's a huge sushi bar with lots of pretty bites, but items looked a bit crispy around the edges. The eel on the sushi was paper thin. The spicy tuna sushi was not. good. Have never heard of or seen the herbal soup Buddha Jumps Over the Wall. Supposedly it takes a long time to simmer & the ingredients are immune boosting & collagen rich. Broth from pork shank, chicken feet, abalone, dried scallops, mushrooms, a quail egg was also in there. It's kind of like a rich hearty dark broth with "healthy root beer" undertones. This soup only appears at the best wedding & other banquets. Try it! Final thoughts: eat anything with abalone ($$) buffet is worth it for that. Get a hot pot & warm up any seafood in the water before eating it. Lots of interesting items to try. Overall it FEELS like a buffet - big on quantity, little on quality, kind of empty. Maybe during seafood season, items would be juicy & tasty, but even the meat items felt like empty St*rbucks food. It's not a bad experience, good bang for the buck. The frog legs were literally like a chicken wing & well seasoned & spicy. The lunch pricing seems good also.
