As expected another fine destination from the little Wisco gang . First the setup is very warm and welcome, takes you away from the noise and crazy city . The food is fantastic specifically two dishes that stands out (though everything is excellent) The mussel toast & the smoked pork shoulder - MUST! Then finish with their excellent take of the profiteroles better than many French institutes . Excellent and friendly service as usual . Highly recommended!!!! Definitely A destination!!!! read more

Enjoyed our meal at Sailor with a few caveats. Cute, albeit tight space with very welcoming staff throughout the restaurant. Great paper plane cocktail and boulevardier. Second was not on the menu but clearly they have a capable bar staff and when ordered, was accepted without hesitation. That said, my husband was asked whether he'd like another before the glass was empty and when he declined, our server took the glass away with about 15% of the drink left. Not egregious but you know...leave it until it's actually finished. The green toast was really interesting. The particular herbs used were unusual and paired really well with the cocktails. The arctic char was served slightly after the toast and we wish it were the reverse. It was lighter in flavor so it had less pizzazz after the pow of the toast. It also had a large bone in the mix, so take care with that. My husband left his cutlery on the serving plate since it was used for fish, and instead of providing us with a fresh set, the server asked him to take his back to reuse. They should fix that... it's one of those niceties of service that elevate the experience overall. The radishes were the big disappointment for us. The NY Times photo showed a veil of guanciale on top. We had one very tiny piece of guanciale. Poof! It was gone in an instant. It was also served so exceedingly hot that it was hard to eat. Kind of an odd thing to have on its own too...would have been a nice accompaniment with the main dishes. It was still an interesting dish without it, but it felt ungenerous without. The stars of the night were the celeriac (trust me...get it, it's outrageously delicious) and the pork shoulder. Heavenly, both of them. You could have eaten the pork with a spoon and the sauce had a really interesting underpinning that just made you feel cozy. The chicken was good but I honestly wouldn't order it again. If you know the NY Times buttermilk chicken recipe, you can make something fairly comparable at home. The parmesan potatoes were super crisp but a clunky size and shape so they proved difficult to eat. Profiteroles were an excellent end to the meal. Would we return? Definitely yes. I'd love to come in spring to see what new items appear on the menu. I'd order different things because the dishes were in some ways very traditional but with fun and intriguing twists, offering unexpected surprises. I'd love to see how things progress as the restaurant settles and finds its rhythm. Overall, more of these sorts of places in Brooklyn, please! It was a nice evening out. read more

Sailor treated me to flavors that exceeded my expectations. They offer a clean setting at reasonable cost. Service is so friendly and recommendation were on spot to yummy happy belly! Their cooking balances excellent flavor and fresh components. This place provides a delightful ambiance. read more

From such a wonderful service to an enjoyable romantic ambiance to select duo creative food. I truly enjoyed my first time at Sailor. The most memorable dish was the sweetbread. The texture and the meaty-ness was a pleasant surprise. I enjoined every bite! read more

Had wanted to try this place for a while so when a brunch reservation came up, thought I may as well give it a shot. Because I hadn't realized the menus were different, I went in with pretty low expectations when I did see the brunch menu. Happily, I was very wrong and the entire meal was a delight. Started off with the ginger cake which was, in all honesty, the most "meh" part of the meal. The cake itself is very dense, almost chewy, which to be fair was described to me in detail when I asked the server about it. Just not really my style of cake -- but the vanilla cream it was served with, oh my God, I could eat that with a spoon right out of a jar and then lick the very last molecule up because to waste even a particle of that gorgeous flecked beauty of a cream would be a crime. Apparently, it's also served with the French toast, so that will be my next order there. My husband got the burger which is easily a top 5 burger in the city. Succulent, perfectly cooked and this amazing rich savory aftertaste (from the caramelized onions maybe?) I got the eggs with the pita and the pita was this beautiful puffed up wonder and the eggs were perfectly runny and served in a puddly little combo of spicy oil and yogurt. I'm getting hungry thinking of it again. So all in all, fabulous. Still looking forward to trying dinner, but will certainly return for brunch. read more

Y'all.. I just threw out $68 of skate that has been sitting in the fridge for a week because we lied to ourselves and said we would try to cut it with a variety of carbs and turn it into fritters when we got home #denial. I'm SO bummed; our group was really looking forward! Went on a recent Sunday with a party of 4, and the two skate entrees were entirely inedible because they were spit-into-napkin salty according to the whole table. Truly shockingly terrible. We were quite hungry, ordered over half the menu plus deserts, spent quite a bit of money, and I left hungry. Small portions, some decent salads, and everything we had was on a scale of fine+ to absolutely inedible. Table wasn't ready for our reservation, and it took a while to order once we were finally sat. Waiter saw that the half of the table that had ordered the skate hadn't moved past the first bite, and didn't inquire. I'm confused. Maybe it was a bad night? But it truly was a BAD night, and an unpleasant enough experience that I don't think I'll be back. read more

Simple food done very well with some interesting modifications. I was actually pleasantly surprised that they accepted walk-ins at the start of service. That place is usually rammed. Enjoyed my coullette which is apparently a French word for picanha. Just wish it still came with frites. Will be back to try the legendary Chicken. read more

Amazing girls night. I live in the neighborhood and have been wanting to try for a while, but getting a reservation is so hard. We ordered the chicken to share, the mussels toast, the arctic char, and of course for dessert we got the profiteroles. The chicken was amazing and the potatoes served with it were perfectly crisp. I never order chicken out but it's worth it here, it was so juicy and flavorful. I loved both the mussels and the arctic char but next time I would like to try the green toast. Those were the best profiteroles I've ever had. Don't skip dessert. The ambiance was great, it's a small restaurant but they have limited seating so it doesn't feel too crowded and it's got large windows so you really get the neighborhood feeling while dining. The only feedback I have is it did feel a little rushed toward the end. I know they have limited seating, but an upscale restaurant aspiring to be possibly Michelin shouldn't ever make their guests feel rushed. read more

I would like to give this a 3.5 star but unfortunately if I'm choosing between 3 and 4 - I'll stick to 3. We went for brunch & this place IS good but over hyped. I think my most favorite item was the flatbread from the Turkish eggs and my friend really loved her Turkish eggs plate. Our server took a while to greet us with water and that doesn't always rub me the right way even though she was nice once we ordered. I got the chicken grain bowl and although it was really delicious, the portion size is quite small to be paying over $20 for it. We also got the French toast and it was GOOD but NOT the BEST - it's gotten so much hype that I think it allowed me to have bigger expectations. I also wasn't really full once we left - so if portion sizes were slightly bigger for the cost that would be great! It left me thinking that it was a good restaurant (glad we tried) but not one I'd be running back to or would jump to recommend. The ambiance of the place is cute but really tight spaces even outside. read more

The food was delicious. We had deviled eggs, smoked salmon bagel and Turkish eggs with flatbread. All fresh and skillfully prepared. The service was excellent. The hostess and waitress were friendly and attentive. We sat outside, but the ambience inside was warm and inviting. They have a new bar area. Highly recommend. read more

Visited Sailor for brunch for the second time on a weekend trip to New York. Last Saturday, we walked in just before noon and gave our names. We walked around the neighborhood and got a coffee at nearby Bittersweet, and by the time we were done our table was ready. We got French toast for the table to share, and it's absolutely the best French toast I've ever had in my life. Real maple syrup, fresh whipped cream, and amazing texture of the French toast. I also got the Turkish eggs for my entree, which was service with a delicious fluffy piece of bread with flaky sea salt and a flavorful chili oil. Everything was excellent and I'm sure I'll be back next time I'm in Brooklyn. read more

Absolutely amazing. Took a 2 hour subway ride from the Bronx to have lunch here. So worth it. Rustic, lively, cozy restaurant. I sat at the bar, the bartender was super nice. It's April Bloomfield's restaurant, so you KNOW the food was good. I stuffed my face, that's for sure. Delicious. read more

Been wanting to come here for brunch for a bit, and it certainly lived up! The french toast (which is consistently raved about), was definitely a highlight, but don't sleep on the quiche! I thought this was so unique, perfectly fluffy on the inside, and quite filling. This place has such a cute aesthetic to it and come on, it's so affordable!! Like these brunch prices are super reasonable that i think I'd recommend it broadly both for atmosphere and options. Lovely spot read more

Happy to have a restaurant as aesthetically pleasing as Sailor on the Dekalb strip. We popped in on day 1 for drinks and bites at the bar and had a lovely time. A negroni was a must and happy to report that they make a very solid one. We started with the anchovy + parmesan plate, which, if you want exactly that, was a good starter. I think after that I've had my fill of anchovies for a while but at least it was something different than we normally do. The mussel toast was fantastic - such good flavor, I did not want to share. Also had the sweetbreads which were hearty and savory, a very winter-y dish if you ask me. We had the green salad with mustard vinaigrette as well to lighten it all up and that was simple but very nice. Service was great and we really enjoyed sitting at the bar. Will definitely be back! read more

What can I say that hasn't been said - everything is exceptional at Sailor, from the service to the vibe to the food. We arrived on a Wednesday evening with a reservation, but had to wait 5-10 minutes for our table to be ready. Not a problem, though the space is tight -- you can't really wait at the bar (people are eating and it's right by the entrance), and in December it's too cold to wait outside. The hostess was friendly and apologetic, and celebrated with us when we were eventually seated. The sommelier was equally approachable and knowledgeable. Our waitress kind, funny, and open to questions. The space is beautifully decorated and warm and welcoming. Okay, now the food. We had starters, mains, and desserts, so I can speak to a lot of the menu. The stuffed radicchio was tasty, as was the mussel toast. Our dining companions enjoyed the brandade, though commented that the portion was small, even for two people. I'd say this is a theme -- everything was delicious, but I wished there was 30% more food on each plate. For mains we ordered the roasted cod, pork shoulder, and coulotte, and the clear winner of the night was the pork shoulder. Literally melted in your mouth, amazing texture and flavors, this was the dish that had me plotting my next visit to Sailor. Would highly recommend. Desserts were good too -- ginger cake was a huge portion (you could see the shredded ginger inside, yum!!), the pear and almond tart was solid but small, and finally the quince sorbet was so creamy and satisfying at the end of the meal. I'd probably get that sorbet again at my next visit. Overall - it's worth the wait and / or fight for a reservation. Can't wait to go again! read more

We had high expectations for our meal here and came away disappointed. The service was extremely slow. The waitress was perfectly pleasant but the food took a long time to arrive -- 20 minutes between an appetizer and salad, and then a good 45 minutes between the salad and our main course. We were told on 3 separate occasions that our main courses would be arriving "within 3 minutes" only to then be told that our "halibut needed to be refired." The waitress was apologetic and told us "we'll make it up to you." When the bill was presented, nothing was comped. I expected a restaurant of this caliber to have comped one item (at least). We were given a free digestif after the meal but I don't drink digestifs and it was presented as an anniversary courtesy anyway. Unfortunate! read more

This place is incredible! My Fiance and I had to stop ourselves from ordering round 2 of both the arctic char pate and the mussel toast. Unbelievable. The steak with horseradish cream was also delicious as were the desserts. Cocktails were also very good and we LOVED the ambiance. Will definitely be back! read more

As usual, Chef April nails the familiar yet unusual flavour, texture and presentation of her food! Deliciousness in every bite. We made a special trip from LA and was impressed from the moment we stepped foot in the restaurant from the warm greeting from Gabe, the care and attention of our server, the decor and atmosphere and of course, the FOOD. We ordered too much deliberately to taste as much as we could and have leftovers the next day. The toast with green sauce, mussel toast, roasted fennel with goats cheese, artic char, chicken, pork, profiteroles, fig almond tart and seasonal ice cream - a feast for two. It was fantastic for leftovers the next day! Can't wait to find an excuse to come back! read more

Great food, attentive service and fun atmosphere - easily one of the best restaurants I went to lately.

The hostess at this place has a really poor attitude. As a resident and neighbor I was disappointed but not surprised as it just another example of how outsiders have taken over and changed the culture of Brooklyn forever. read more

I came here JUST to write a review and I haven't reviewed a restaurant in years. I had a great experience at Sailor - the hostess is lovely and accommodating, the bartenders are so friendly / just great company, the food is fantastic, and the space is beautiful. Only took a year to get a reservation but this place delivered on every expectation. The interior is gorgeous, warm and comfortable. Everyone we interacted with was helpful and friendly. The food was just goddamn delicious. The brandade dip was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It's made of salt cod/bacala and just the most delicious, not fishy, salt cod I've ever had. It's served with this garlicky toast that we asked for an extra helping of so we wouldn't leave a single bite. It's warm and creamy and a taste explosion. We each had a fish entree, bass and halibut, and both were gorgeous. What a gem of a place! read more

For all the hoopla and long wait to get a reservation, I was surprised at the petite servings. The Arctic Char entree portion was the size of my thumb. Sure the place is charming, but so are a ton of other restaurants in the area that don't send you home wanting a bag of popcorn. The servers are lovely, attentive and attractive... but I couldn't help feel their "sorry dude" when they put the plate down in front of me. read more

3 stars for the space and service. We did have high expectations as it's on a bunch of end of year lists. Unfortunately we were underwhelmed. There was not much flavor all round. We got the smoked arctic char pâté to start and had a sinking feeling it would not be a great dinner because it tasted like something you'd get to at a bar with a pint of beer. The beans and rice in the stuffed radicchio tasted good. The sweetbreads were also good. We got a few other dishes which all didn't taste of much so not worth mentioning. But honestly, we couldn't believe the hype after eating here?? It was just fine. Not terrible but just fine. It's such a shame as the space is so beautiful and I would have loved to be excited to go back. Also, we were disappointed that they 86'd two of the desserts. I find it hard to believe that they ran out of profiteroles and ice cream. More like it was 10.30pm and staff wanted to get outta there, so the only options were a slice of ginger cake or scooping out some sorbet. read more

Sailor combines a great space, top-notch service and awesome food to provide a wonderful experience. Service was impeccable - friendly, helpful and attentive. Sailor can be wonderful if its no hassle to go, but is really not worth it if getting in the door is a headache. I much prefer the dinning room, or at least a table, to the bar. The bar is uncomfortably crowded for dinner and the stools have no back - which for me is a deal breaker. I think the Chicken is excellent and most of the food I've had good. The last time a went, on a very small menu, they were out of three items - which I found both frustrating and problematic given the limited options. Most of all though my feeling are a bit tainted by how unpleasant the female host (not blonde) was in terms of coordinating timing. Thats what made me realize, that this place seems really excellent if its overall a pleasant night and easy to go. But really not worth it if its the least bit of a hassle. read more

Over-salted, under-flavored, glacial-paced service, plates so hot they've clearly been sitting under a heat lamp...waited for at least six months to get a table (and by wait, I mean diligently logging onto Resy trying for reservations for a party of two on a random Tuesday evening), and when the day finally came, I was left so underwhelmed. Sailor needs to sail away and let other restaurants--stalwarts like nearby Romans and newcomers alike--take the helm. read more

The wine was excellent. Service was fabulous. Their food not so much we had a salad to start off and it was supposed to be their "special" salad so it's like about 25 bucks and it was just radicchio lettuce with 1 egg and 1 asparagus lmao soooo overly bitter. They didn't try to combine another lettuce with it to balance that off like a bib lettuce would help or some golden raisins_so there's a piece of advice for them. The salad was so insipid and I know maybe they're trying to appeal to a white gentrified palate but other ppl got tastebuds. Specially for 20 up dollars. It desperately needed pepper salt and acid. I got their quiche and my partner had their burger. Burger was tasty but also again very basic with your typical sautéed onions and gruyere cheese, nothing special. The quiche was out of this world not gonna lie. It was great but the side salad it came with again the same lettuce nothing more just insipid. Just don't bother with serving the quiche with a salad just let me order my own side- which there was only 2 options: fries or chard I think. Also asked to try their "fermented" hot sauce which tasted overly garlicky-(ofc we love garlic but call it garlic aioli or garlic sauce bc there was ZERO spice to it) again idk what palate they're cooking in mind with. Just don't call it a hot sauce lol We then moved onto dessert which we regretted immediately because their almond cake tasted like a newton bar. newton bar with nuts on it actually a newton bar might be better (and I hate newton bars lol) So yeah restaurant def way overhyped. Food is meh. Maybe dinner/brunch menu would be better? Idk if I'll give it another shot though tbh there are far more delicious restaurants nearby. read more

Wow. Is it tough to get a table? Yes. Is it worth the effort. Abso-frickin-lutley! The seafood sandwich at the brunch service if on offer shouldn't be missed. It is top tier. The green salad w/ oregano vinaigrette is seemingly simple but so perfectly composed, the lettuces are beautiful and the plating is that of a Dutch Master. The Gentleman's relish, new to me, but phenomenal, a classic British sort of anchovy pâté or paste, perfectly paired with the most luscious of toast. The ginger cake reminds me of a Dundee cake without the fruit and almonds, it's dense, dark, and moody and everything you want in a brunch sweet and didn't know it. The FOH goes above and beyond in an effortless natural way. They know their stuff but aren't stuffy about it. Excellent service, really cool group. Shout out to Betty who was kind enough to talk watches with me. I did love the cheeky nautical ambience, it was curated, thoughtful, and fun down to the yellow cabinet in the restroom. I can't wait for a repeat adventure. read more

food not worth the price--very bland and without much taste. Beautiful restaurant and nice atmosphere though.
