A friend recommended Saigon Cafe's pho, and I had to wholeheartedly disagree with her. Got the pho tai and soft summer rolls. The latter tasted dirty, as if the lettuce or shrimp was unwashed - or both. The pho tai was boring with overcooked noodles. Food aside, I couldn't get comfortable because the booth seats are uncommonly short. I'm only 5'4, and the bench didn't even hit the back of my knees (see photo). We paid before using the restroom, and as I was waiting for my friend to finish, the server who had literally just accepted our payment welcomed me to the restaurant and invited me to take a seat... I hate to write a bad review.. but we were very disappointed with this meal. We ordered and people who came after us got their food before we did. When the food came it did come with all the desired sauces but the food was underwhelming at best. The egg cake which came with my vermicelli and grilled pork was tiny and the pork was just alright. I have not eaten there since before Covid it used to be one of our favorite places for lunch. The only thing that has improved of the hours longer. I had rice for Micelli noodles with chicken and broccoli mushroom soup. The broth was fairly tasty and wasn't overly salty, which was a nice change from in the past. The broccoli and mushrooms were inedible. The broccoli was mostly yellow tasteless, and the mushrooms had a strange taste. My guess is that they were way too old. The vermicelli noodles were cooked decently, but really that much money for boiled noodles. The chicken was not particularly tasting my husband had fried rice with pork. It wasn't terrible but nothing special. I've changed a lot. I won't be back again. I'll try the other Vietnamese restaurant so disappointed in Santa Fe food lately. read more

I've been wanting Vietnamese food so badly so I decided to give this place a try. After seeing that they offered one of my favorite dishes "catfish in a clay pot" I called and placed a take out order. I had expected the fish to be in a thick spicy caramel sauce from the coconut and sugar, but it was served in an extremely salty broth and the fish were very fishy tasting. I had to throw it out because of this. I also ordered some spring rolls and they had the tiniest pieces of pork in them with one small shrimp in each roll. Believe this is now called Saigon Cafe. We really loved our meal. started with hot tea. I got rice vermicelli with unpeeled shrimp. Hubby got Vietnamese noodle soup with shrimp. Portions were very fair and food was so good!! We even ordered the egg fried rice and took most of it home for leftovers. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. I liked, but didnt love, my lunch here the other day. The booths were almost all full when we arrived, but still got pretty quick service when we arrived. I ordered the grilled chicken vermicelli cold noodle salad bowl. I mixed the ingredients together, but the dish was not served with the usual fish oil so it was a but sticky to get everything to mix. The lettuce was a little past its prime. The chicken was in very small, hard bits. The bowl also comes topped with fried onions (like the ones that come in a can), which was unusual: the texture was offputting and the flavor overwhelming. My boyfriend likes his pho; I tried some and found it a bit oily but yummy. Overall decent lunch experience but will choose other Vietnamese options in Santa Fe before returning here. read more

Saigon Cafe, in the shopping center at Cordova and Don Diego, is one of Santa Fe's reliable Vietnamese restaurant institutions. Pho Kim and, more recently, Pho Ava, are better, but Saigon hits the spot for me. I stopped in a couple days back with two friends. On the inside, this place hasn't changed since I started coming here a decade ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the food still fit my fancy as well. My girlfriend ordered the #19 rice vermicelli with grilled chicken, while I opted for the #8 beef pho (rare steak + meatballs). (The #8 is Saigon's only pho offering, so if you or your party want a variety of pho styles, you're better off heading to Pho 79 in Albuquerque.) The pho was pretty good; I asked for extra cilantro and jalapeños, which was quickly provided. The cilantro was fresh and delightful, though the jalapeños were not particularly spicy. Meanwhile, my girlfriend found her dish to be mostly alright, noting that the lettuce and the chicken could have been fresher. Our other friend, who ordered the #15a Vietnamese noodle soup w/ fried tofu, was a little disappointed. Seems it didn't have much flavor. I absolutely love Saigon. My husband and I have been going here for over 16 years. This is always our go to when it comes to treating ourselves. We have two young boys who love it too. When they are quiet during a meal, you know it's good. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be Saigon's egg rolls. read more

They need to fire their dishonest waitress. We've been going there for three years and have always had a positive experience, but last week we tried to place a to go order that included a fried fish and were told they couldn't do that because it would take 45 minutes (a lie--we got one three nights before in about 20-25 minutes) and the kitchen needed to shut down. This was at 8:10 and they close at 9. There's a laziness that seems to be pretty pervasive in NM (I've never seen so many people not want to make money, whether it's being open four hours a day three or four days a week or just straight up lying as in this case) but this was noteworthy even for them. read more

Absolute worst vietnamese food , if anyone can call it Vietnamese. Place is dirty, front door has nit been cleaned what it seems for several months. The Pho here is amazing but the service is very poor. I called in my order and apparently they didn't hear some of it even though they repeated the order back to me? Forgot an order and they charge extra for toppings for a Tofu Pho but not for Beef Pho. They also forgot noodles for one of my orders. **Check your order before you leave. read more

It's a little pricey for Vietnamese food, but it is two blocks from my house, so I thought I'd give it a try. First off, it was super-packed for the 45 minutes I was there (to pick up a to-go order that was supposed to be ready in 20 minutes). The one server was totally swamped, but did work the floor like a pro and gave me a free soft drink while I waited. The vietnamese egg rolls were standard, and I downed them pretty quick. My table of two ordered both the Rice Vermicelli with grilled pork, and the one with grilled chicken and shrimp and both were pretty decent. In a town with so few Pho Joints it's hard to be a critic. Not to brag but I've slurped down a tanker truck or two of Pho, and that being revealed, I've had every variety of Pho known to man. I have had this sort of addiction to this ubiquitous Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup for over a decade now after first discovering it at Pho #1 on Buford Highway in Atlanta Georgia. Yes, Atlanta GA has some of the finest Asian and Pacific Asian cuisine in abundance. Believe it! Now that I live in the beautiful state of New Mexico, in the majestic city of Santa Fe, I still need to get my Pho on! So far I've found three places and with Saigon Cafe being one of them I could not be kept away with their unsavory Yelp reviews. The cafe? It's dumpy and kinda dark and dingy, but not the worst place I've ever slurped the Pho at. That honor belongs to a hole in the wall on 82nd in SE Portland that bears no name, just a nasty dirty hole that served up Pho better than a lotta joints I been to. The Saigon cafe offers zero variety for Pho on the menu, only one dish, number 8. It comes with rare eye of round and sliced meatballs. Was it good? You bet it was! Was it great? No way! What it was was average tasty Pho with flavorful broth but not enough onions, but oddly enough they had a scant amount of sweet peas in there. It was not very big but pretty costly at ten bucks for an average tasting medium sized bowl of Pho. The garnish dish was funky to say the least. Jalapeño, lime, coriander cilantro, and mung bean sprout all dried out from sitting in the fridge all day. Plus get this, instead of Basil they offered Purple Shiso on the garnish plate! That was a first for me! Shiso, usually the green variety, is offered as garnish with Japanese Sashimi, or Chirashi, a really fragrant leaf similar to Basil but lighter in intensity. For myself I always order Goi Cuon as an appetizer with my Pho. Theirs were big but like the garnish plate, not fresh and sitting in the fridge all day so it was dried up as well. It was still edible except for the Nuoc Leo (peanut dipping sauce) which for some odd reason had garlic in it -Yuck! In summation of this review, for which I am only reviewing the atmosphere, Pho and Goi Cuon, I would say that the most disappointing part of this meal was the price. $10 for a no choice of meats medium bowl of Pho is no bueno. I'd of been super happy with it at $7 or at most $7.50. The Goi Cuon for $5 is kinda the going rate, but for that price it should be served closer to fresh than these spring rolls were and not have garlic in the peanut sauce. Would I go back again? That really depends on what happens with Pho Kim and if I get tired of their Pho anytime soon. Lan's is not really even an option for Pho, but they do have an amazing delicious Vietnamese menu at Lan's and I'm going to enjoy dining there too because its a super nice place to eat. You know what though? Saigon Cafe does not need a five star review from me because when I went there for lunch today the tables were full and they were busy serving hungry people that looked happy to be eating their food, so my hat is off to them for their success. Can't say I've tasted a representative sample of their menu, but the two soups I tried here were VERY impressive. The chicken curry soup was delicious, rich, just spicy enough, and had some lovely spices going on. The hot and sour soup was like nothing I've ever had before -- not at all like the Chinese version of the same dish, full of lemongrass flavor and just excellent. On the whole, this unassuming little place exceeded my expectations by quite a bit. I guess they might be a little inconsistent, but if you want good Vietnamese in Santa Fe what the heck else are you gonna do? read more
