This place was on my list of places to try for a while and finally had the chance today. It was pretty crowded during their lunch rush but the line for ordering was pretty quick. By 1:30pm they had already ran out of pho so you can imagine how many people enjoy their food. The pho was good overall but the broth was on the sweeter end for my liking. They offer 3 of the fried spring rolls versus the traditional 2 which is a plus but the sauce for spring rolls is a sweet sauce instead of the traditional fish sauce which is a nice twist. My favourite spot for lunch in downtown!! They are fairly close to my office. So I always go to Saigon Subs and Rolls for lunch! They only open at lunch time and it's always packed. I would recommend to calling in and order your food and take out. It's not a big place, they do have few tables for people to dine in. 1. Beef Pho (4/5) Love the texture of the noodles. Soup base is amazing too! But the beef cooked too long sometime. 2. Bahn Mi (3/5) I ordered a pork banh mi. It's average but they do have a lot of meat and veggie in it! A couple of coworkers had recommended Saigon Rolls and Subs for lunch, and I decided to try it. The result was rather mixed, but optimistic. The storefront restaurant was very clean, both inside and out. They were VERY crowded at the time, which is always a very good sign to me. Although there was one person in front of me, the woman behind the counter took care of her in friendly, speedy fashion. When my turn came, she was just as friendly and courteous. She handed me the food, (Vegetable Pho with Chicken), and I was on my way. The Vegetable Pho smelled wonderful and familiar, as when I would eat it Downtown in my youth. The vegetables and noodles tasted terrific. The broth was salty and the chicken was a bit bland. Unfortunately, after I finished my Pho, I had gotten one of the worst headaches I've had in a long time. Overall, (besides the headache), I don't feel like Saigon Subs and Rolls is a bad place. Good food, but a few misses. The tofu banh mi had nice flavor. The tofu tasted like it had five spice powder on it, which I enjoyed. The vegetables were crisp and had a nice zing of vinegar. The construction of the sandwich could have been much better though. Both ends were just bread, and the vegetables and tofu were stacked on top of each other, so when you eat the sandwich you have to choose between a bite that's all veg or all tofu. As others have mentioned, the vegetables are sliced fairly coarsely, so these are very contrasting bites of soft tofu or crunchy vegetable sticks. (Also, the roll is not crisp like a baguette, but does taste good and holds together well.) The tofu spring rolls (the fresh kind, not fried) had good flavor, but also weren't consistent from bite to bite. The bites with mint were nice and flavorful, but that was about 50% of the roll. The other parts had no mint and were markedly less enjoyable. Judicious distribution of the herbs would bring these from 6/10 to 9/10. The dipping sauce is tasty, but it does lean towards sweet over umami. The iced tea is also good, but also a bit sweet. Less sugar and/or a darker roast would add some nice bitterness. One star is lost for the misses in food. Despite there being a few misses, they are all easy to fix and all the pieces are there for the food to improve. The other star lost is because this store's primary product is plastic. Plastic bags, plastic cups, plastic straws, styrofoam containers, styrofoam cups. It feels like they'd have plastic napkins if they could. Please stop defaulting to packaging that will outlive your great grandkids. Even if the food was perfect, I would not be comfortable ordering here again if this much disrespect for the only planet known to shelter humans is still shown. read more

I loved this place! It was right behind my hotel and so convenient that I came here two days in a row for lunch while at a conference at the Duke Energy Convention Center this past week. The first day, I ordered the tofu and veggie spring roll vermicelli bowl, which was filled with delicious vegetables such as carrot and daikon, cucumbers, lettuce, and peanuts with delicious fish sauce dressing. I also ordered a Thai tea with boba, which was way sweeter than I am used to but it was still refreshing. The second day, I got one order each of shrimp and tofu fresh rolls that came with peanut sauce for me to take to go. It was so fast that from ordering to walking out it took under 6 minutes, so I was able to get back to the convention center, eat, and present within 20 minutes of the transaction. One of my daughters' favorite pho places (Cilantro) closed recently, so we continue our quest for good pho. Having been to Vietnam numerous times, our bar is pretty high. So we kept our fingers crossed when we came across Saigon Subs and rolls. The place is small, inviting and clean, located on the west side of 4th street downtown. My daughter and I had the Chicken Pho and did enjoy it. It had everything you would come to hope for in good pho, including the veggie adds (cilantro, fresh mint, bean sprouts etc). I wish I could give it a 5 star rating but the taste was not as good as I'd hoped. And it seemed a bit "oily" in the broth. Broth worth walking in the rain for, actually the best Pho broth I've tasted in quite a while. The PHO itself was a very generous serving, with plenty of vegetables, basil, chili sauce ( I tossed it all in ). The texture of the noodles was perfect. I also added a Pork Bohn MI to go, which was not made (purposely) until I was ready to go. I forgot to mention it was for lunch the next day (other places will wrap ingredients separately). I arrived maybe 45 minutes before closing to eat in, but I didn't feel rushed. Until the sweeping began, already feeling a bit guilty for being the last patron, I got my remaining bowl of deliciousness to go. Oh, if you're the clumsy type, you do have to walk your full bowl of broth on a tray from the counter to your table. Don't focus on the bowl, just walk and you won't spill one delicious drop. I got the beef pho, which had flavorful soup, a good amount of sliced beef, beef ball, and noodles. It did not come with tripe or tendon, but I wasn't complaining because I usually have to take it out anyways. I decided to give Saigon Subs and Rolls a try. I am glad I made the trip downtown. I'm a sandwich guy so I had to give their Banh Mi a try. I chose the pork sandwich, and I will tell you it was delicious. French bread was perfect, not too hard or too soft. Meat was perfectly seasoned and tender. Topped with cilantro and jalapeños, made this a true winner. Next time I will have to try their pho soup. Add the jalapeno slices and the sprouts, and hit it good with the lime. (The cilantro's pre-added.) Give it the Sriracha and the hoisin, to your taste. Mix it up, and dig in. Why? I ordered the bahn mi's, eggrolls and Vietnamese coffee. I have yet to try their pho but from the looks of it, the soup seems pretty generic and contain only the super basic stuff (no tripe, no tendon, etc normally you would find at other pho places) and for that reason, I didn't order their pho soup. Their bahn mi's were alright. Not my favorite as I had better elsewhere. Fried eggrolls were decent as well. Overall, their food was okay...would i come back again, probably not. If you want authentic bahn mi's, try Paris Bahn Mi in West Chester. If you want great pho, try Pho Kimmy off of Sharonville. read more
