After having dropped our daughter off at the CVG airport, darling wifey & I stopped by Findlay Market. After browsing/munching for an hour or so, I saw Saigon Market's sign. I think it had been 10-15 years (SORRY!) since I'd last been there to buy some rice. Wifey & I entered the store, and I felt quite comfortable. Being a lover of Asian foods in general, I felt at home. Brightly lit store, nicely arranged aisles, food within shelf life (a big issue for some stores), and a good assortment of cooking equipment (carbon steel woks in a nice variety of sizes). I can't recall if they have many knives for sale. I doubt it, being a knife-lover in general. Wifey & I got some dried soba noodles, some Vietnamese rice paper wrappers for Spring rolls (Goi Cuon, on the menu tonight at home), and some EXCELLENT quality, hand-packaged bean sprouts, cilantro, and Thai basil. I particularly like the care they took in selecting/packaging the Thai basil. Rather than the exceedingly long stems (to add weight, don'cha know) seen on the CAM Thai basil, the stuff I got at Saigon Market was mostly flavorful, brightly colored (green/purple) leaves. Good place. I hope to be back in less than another 10-15 years. :-) read more

This is such a cute and convenient shop if you're looking for Asian groceries and you live close to the university. I'm a huge fan of how they organize their spices in boxes so everything is easy to find! They didn't have a huge selection of produce but definitely some fresh looking cilantro, Thai basil, and Lemon grass! No longer will I be going to Kroger to buy Lemongrass for 3.99 when I can just go here instead when I can't make it to CAM. Even though this shop was located in the downtown, they have great prices that compare to CAM and there's a lot of cute shops around the area. For being so small, they had a large selection of goods from freezer to canned and I ended up being really surprised by the many goods they carry. Parking during weekdays isn't too bad because there was plenty of street parking, but during a Saturday or Sunday morning, I have to pay using the public lot. It was about $5 for 3 hours so that wasn't bad either. I will definitely be back to for all of my Asian grocery needs! read more

Saigon Market is where it's at as far as Asian groceries are concerned. Located at historic Findlay Market this scary and condemned looking building is in fact open for business! Peek inside and you will be glad you did. They carry everything from spices, to curry mixes, pho broths, Asian candy and more! I love how they have the store organized and laid out by category. It is very clear and broken out by sauces, broths, veggies, drinks, spices etc. If you are still confused the men working inside can point you in the right direction. I would recommend picking up ingredients here instead of eating out the next time you think about Asian. Or really just challenging yourself to cook something new and outside your comfort zone. Every thing is really cheap, so if you mess up it's no biggie. Definitely check them out next time you are at Findlay. read more

I go here a lot while at Findlay Market for the convenience of not having to drive to CAM if possible. For a small store, it's a pretty good selection of Asian products which can supplement everything you can get at Findlay Market. Plus there is a good selection of spices found in Chinese and Southeast Asian cooking sold at cheaper prices than Colonel De Herb. If I need a spice, I start here, and whatever I can't get, I would go to Colonel de Herb afterwards. The owner is also very knowledgeable about Asian cooking particularly Southeast Asian and if there is something you need to make like pho, pad thai, or curry, he will gladly tell you what ingredients to buy. Overall, if attending UC or living close to the downtown area, not a bad place to start for Asian cooking before going to CAM as a last resort. read more

Anytime I seem to have trouble finding an item at my local grocery or market I know that I'll end up finding it at Saigon Market. We belong to a cookbook club. Every few months we have a new cookbook with a handful of new and fresh recipes for us to cook up. Many times bc these are new to us we may have an ingredient or two missing. I love that when I walk in I can poke around and find what ingredients I need or go straight to the clerk and be lead immediately to the item! Bonus time!! My fav part to any restaurant or store! The yummy snacks and sweets available at the front when cashing out. Can't find much like them at most stores. So indulge a bit my friend! read more

Saigon is great. I live downtown and making the trip to Jungle Jims is a hassle to say the least. My boyfriend loves to cook curry & we go down to Findlay for Saigon Market goodies at least once every 2 weeks. They have everything there and it is all super authentic. Make sure you know what you're getting though, because it will be really hard to find otherwise! Many of the products there don't have English labels. THAT'S how authentic it is! Actually, I work part-time at a Thai restaurant, whose Thai owners/chefs frequent the market to purchase supplies to use in our kitchen. So you know it's legit! read more

Okay, so I am tired of buying the crappy, flavorless curry paste from the international section of Kroger yet I am not willing to give up on making curry dishes at home. Today I ventured to Saigon market with the mission of finding some semi-authentic curry paste, and if I was lucky some decent fish sauce to boot. Wow! I was not disappointed. The helpful staff pointed out an array of both items and even made some recommendations to my newbie-self. I nabbed three tins of curry paste (red, green, and masaman) even though there were a dozen or so to choose from. Get this: they were only $1.15 a piece! Grand total for three tins of curry paste and a small bottle of fish sauce: $4.85. I would have easily spend ten bucks on lesser quality products at a big grocery store. I was also happy to see that they sell a variety of fresh basil, which I will keep in mind next time I come back. read more

The product mix in here is quite great. It's a cozy little shop. There's all the basics and some snacks from China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and possibly more. As well as plates, rice cookers and some frozen things. Though they were selling a package of pork shumai for $9 that had only a few. There were some traditional medicines being sold on a shelf. One was basically Viagra along with some tea and coffee packages. read more

Great, local Asian grocery store! Don't be fooled by the outside - I initially thought this place wasn't open, but it is so don't be afraid to go inside. I like that it's located conveniently by Findlay Market and carries many of the staples for Asian cooking. They have a wide variety on offer, including cookware, health items, frozen foods, and they even had gluten-free sauces (soy, teriyaki, etc)! Not the largest store or selection of Asian cooking items, but a lot more convienent for many and definitely have a great selection for the space they have. The staff is very friendly and nice. I'll definitely stop back by when I need to pick up some items they carry! read more

As others have noted this is an awesome little market with a great selection and low prices on Asian ingredients. I came into the Saigon market yesterday for some shark brand siracha (the best, very hot and spicy), well they didn't have it, so the owner's son helped me pick out a brand that was comparable plus it had a picture of a minister on the side of the bottle. The prices are very reasonable and on future stops to the market I will make sure to stop in and pick up some awesome products. read more

I was trying to make Pad Thai over the weekend but I was missing two key ingredients that Kroger didn't have: Rice Noodles and Tamarind Paste. I was surprise Kroger didn't have any Rice Noodles, but I expected Tamarind Paste to be hard to find. Well, Saigon Market had both. It's a small store, but the selection is huge, and the prices are great. Ask the employees for help finding anything, they know where things are and can help immensely. I didn't actually know what Tamarind was, so they were able to 1) show me where it is and 2) show me that there was a liquid and a more solid variety. For Pad Thai, you want the liquid Tamarind paste -- apparently it's a key ingredient in getting that perfect flavor. I love asian food and like to try my hand at cooking it myself every once in a while. I used to shy away from doing this because of all the strange ingredients i could never find at Kroger - but this is definitely no longer the case. Saigon Market is my go-to for basically any ingredient you could imagine that would go in asian food. They have a wide selection of sauces and asian noodles. We were moving our daughter to Clifton area in Cinci from New Jersey. She is part Asian and loves to eat certain Asian foodstuff. We went to Happy Market first but couldn't find the preserved mustard greens and Tom Yam paste that she loved. So I walked into this little hole in the wall market that is located off W. Elder St. here in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. I am not a nasty nati native. I am a Detroit native but anyone who knows me, knows that no matter where I go I find ethnic markets....it is like my sixth sense. I walked into this market and I have to say....it is the most diverse ethnic market I have been into. Where can you go and find canned Callaloo and ackee, a plethora of gluten-based vegetarian meats, israeli couscous, hummus, along with many cans of arabic beans, a medicinal herb section that was out of this world, along with many Vietnamese selections (It IS a Vietnamese market after all!). They also had a nice variety of gluten-free baking products, dishes, cookware (such as carbon steel woks), and many other cooking utensils. The owner was friendly and healthful. This store is a culinary ADD person's paradise (I am indeed ADD and a food fanatic and unashamed!) I was overstimulated and delighted. There was one drawback.....their refrigerator was broken that housed "cold drinks"....I really wanted a cold bottle of young coconut water. As suggested by the first reviewer of this market.....they are ORGANIZED.....there is nothing better than organized chaos...YES! I definitely recommend a visit. read more

A few years ago, I developed an obsession with red bean paste based desserts. I have no idea why. At that time, this seemed to be the only place I could find red bean paste, and I still love visiting this little store. Yes, it does look condemned from the outside, but put that aside and you will enter a treasure chest of awesome foodie finds.
