Dinner at Saigon Palace with friends is always a good idea. This was one of those nights where the table just kept filling up with dishes and everyone shared everything family-style. Summer rolls, quail, noodle dishes, pho, and of course the beef and broccoli that I am constantly telling people to order. Once again, it delivered. Tender beef, great flavor, huge portion, and everybody at the table immediately understood why I keep talking about it. This is the kind of restaurant that works best when you order a bunch of dishes and let everyone try a little of everything tapas-style. The portions are generous and very shareable. The staff here is also genuinely helpful. They made recommendations for our table, checked in often, and kept everything moving smoothly even with a larger group. Another underrated bonus is the parking. They have their own lot, which in Charlotte honestly deserves appreciation all by itself. Easy access too, especially if you are coming from the freeway or busy parts of town. If you love Vietnamese food, this place is absolutely worth adding to your regular rotation. I had the Pho Brisket. My husband had the chicken fried rice. My Pho was GREAT! My husband didn't eat all of his food, because there was so much. The water had a funny taste. The place was relatively empty during dinner time compared to usual days according to the owner. She told us she can barely pay the bills. That's unfortunate. I hope they can survive this hard time. This is a great place for comfort food and for all hunger levels. I wasn't too hungry, so I split the Ro Cha Gio (a basket of 4 crispy fried spring rolls served with green leaf lettuce and fish sauce) and the Banh Xeo (Vietnamese yellow pancakes stuffed with shrimp, lean pork, and bean sprouts served with a side of green leaf lettuce and fish sauce) with my friend. Our food came fresh from the kitchen to our table, as it was hot while we were splitting it. The serving sizes were generous, and the taste was equally as good! My mom and I were in Charlotte for a conference, and when we are traveling we like to try out different local places wherever we happen to be. The front façade is quite unassuming, but don't let that stop you from going for a bite to eat! Inside, there are all of the quirky things that I have come to view as almost standard when it comes to Vietnamese restaurants... chandeliers hanging in places that make you go "Huh, that's odd", knick-knacks showing off a bit of Vietnamese culture, etc. Once we were seated, we went through the menu, which is actually pretty standard for a Vietnamese restaurant. We went for the spring rolls, some dumplings, and a bowl of pho for each of us. All of those items were good, and we enjoyed all of it, but there was nothing truly special about what we had. The hot bowls of soup came out relatively quickly and we were in and out of the restaurant quite fast. Food: We ordered the pork spring rolls (Go Cuon Thit Nuong) as our starter. The spring rolls were some of the best we've ever had! The balance between the pork, noodles, and vegetables was perfect, and the peanut sauce paired deliciously with the rolls. For our main dishes, we ordered the Pho Tai Chin (medium rare steak and brisket) and Bun Bo Hue (hue style noodle soup served with beef, pork knuckle, and round rice noodle). The Pho Tai Chin had a nice, full broth and a good serving of meat. The Bun Bo Hue wasn't all that spicy but still had a deep flavor that was extremely satisfying. Overall: Pho Saigon has some pretty solid food! We feel that they are a reliable spot for when you're craving a hot, comforting bowl of pho. The service was great and the food was high quality. I've been here a few times. The food is fresh and they give you plenty of herbs to go with your meal. I got the Vietnamese pancakes. The pancakes were a bit greasy this time. I had them here before and they were much better. However, gosh these are messy. Someone needs to hold a class on how to eat these without it dripping down your arm. Maybe I need to youtube it. Our waiter was friendly but he seemed just as perplexed how to eat it. I got a boba tea but was surprised when it was delivered "frozen" like a milkshake. We chose the Steamed Rice Noodle Wraps and it's a great option as a large appetizer or an entree. They give you a whole set-up so that you can wrap your own summer rolls with a whole plateful of fillings. The other great option we had was the fried noodles with vegetables. Great vegetable options and the sauce is to die for. If you've never had fried noodles before - you've been missing out. It's a bed of fried noodles covered with a bunch of sauce. The sauce softens the noodles in an amazing way. Yes, soggy noodles here is a good thing! Try it, Partner is absolutely hooked. I haven't had a good version of this dish in probably a decade so I'm so happy to find this spot! The only thing that could be improved is not using spaghetti for some of the noodle dishes.
