I want to like this place. I really do. It's close to my parents' house and the pho is very good. However, the service has yet to be worth the hassle sometimes. It's always very slow and the service staff has always been mediocre. I know we'll keep trying b/c of its location and our daughter loves some pho. However, if any place opens up that serves something comparable to this place, this place won't last. If you want decent pho and can keep your expectation of service low, you'd be fine here. On Monday morning, I woke up with that feeling we all know, a scratchy throat and a stuffy nose. In that state, there is only one thing I crave: Pho Ga. Now, I may be just 21 years old. But, growing up in a southern household with a mom who knows her way around a kitchen and has a love for cuisine like no other, I know what good food is. My family has been eating at Vietnamese restaurants my whole life and I have ordered the same thing at every new restaurant I go to. Probably because I love the feeling a warm bowl of Pho makes me feel or it could be the nostalgia that it brings me (imagine Anton Ego eating that bite of Ratatouille). To go with my soup, I always get Crispy Spring Rolls as my appetizer. I must say, I was very impressed with Saigon 1. I gravitated towards ordering my to-go lunch here because it was recommended to me by a friend of mine who is from Vietnam. I naturally trusted her opinion and ordered from here after being let down by many other Vietnamese restaurants in the VA Beach area. The Pho was warm and flavorful with noodles and toppings on the side for me to add myself. The crispy spring rolls were crispy (duh) with a yummy filling. I usually don't dip in nouc cham that comes with the rolls and opt for traditional soy sauce, but I think Saigon 1 has brought me onto the nouc cham train. Being from Richmond where the cuisine varies greatly and the only restaurants that stay afloat are the really good ones, I have been on the hunt for a go-to Vietnamese restaurant in the area and I think I found it. I still don't think it was the best Pho Ga or spring rolls I have ever had (Hello Dalat and Mekong in Richmond) but it is definitely the best in the Virginia Beach area. It is also important to mention that as soon as I walked in I was greeted by staff and quickly given my lunch. Next time I go, I hope to see it bustling with customers. Thank you Saigon 1! read more

Uber eats took a while to get to me because the order took much longer than expected to be ready... which is surprising because we only ordered pho so it's just broth and noodles. The pho was good but the flank steak was so tough/overcooked it hurt my jaw to chew. Pretty good serving size though! read more

Greasy pho and over priced! I also ordered grilled meat dish with rice. Very small dish and meat for $11.95 and $10.95? I can't believe people gave such high ratings. My mother is Vietnamese and an extremely picky eater. I've taken her to every Vietnamese restaurant in town, but this is the place she always makes me take her to. She loves their fish in clay pot. Personally I like their Vietnamese pancakes (not as good as mom's, but curbs the cravings when I get 'em), and their bun dishes (noodle salad) are so good. So why did I give them 5 stars? Me and my family went in there for dinner a few nights ago, and my baby was being a little fussy. All our food came out and my husband and I took turns eating and passing the baby back and forth. Then our server said "Can I hold the baby so you guys can eat?" Ummmm... YES! She walked around the restaurant holding that baby until we finished our meals. I mean, I've heard of these stories, but never seen it in action nor experienced it firsthand. It was such a kind gesture and really appreciated. So stop by and give them some love... and try the Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk! read more

Saigon 1 - Service went above and beyond! - Vietnamese Near Me - Virginia Beach, Virginia

Pho broth tends sweet and was tasty. Rice noodles were ok (they lacked the chewy/ springiness of good ones). Ambience is 2-3 stars: fluorescent lights and TVs. Prices are fair ($10-$11 for a large) and service speed was average (some Pho places bring it out in under 5min!) They have an extensive menu of Vietnamese noodle and meat dishes, plus vegan/ paleo pho options (and pork and chicken broth). If you're close by, and you're in the mood for Pho, it'll do. read more

It's more like a 3.5 I go here pretty often, since I'm not near Vietnam Garden as much, and it's a tiny tiny tiny bit cheaper. The seats and tables are covered in plastic, sort of like the chairs that my parents had when I was a kid. Actually they're still covered up. What's with that??? They've got a big menu, the biggest menu a vietnamese restaurant in this area can have! Quite a few pages, versus the two page usually found at others. I really like their chicken soup here. I remember having it a long time ago at pho 79 when I was a teenager, and hating it. Also a couple years ago at Vietnam garden and not liking it as much. But that might have been my fault, since I recently decided Vietnamese food wasn't poison (cilantro!!!!! GROSS) Lunch specials are 6.50, and it's like a mini 3 course meal. You get a choice of soup (chicken, beef pho, or wonton), and a roll of your choice (shredded, fried, or summer) and an entree. Dinner as a similar thing, but it's around 8 dollars. I've gotten their Bahn Mi before, the grilled pork. It was good, though a bit too heavy on the mayonaise, but the crunchy cucumbers, carrots, and daikon were yummmmy. However, I also remembered why I don't eat pork anymore. (not their fault, just a personal preference). They got a little section of bun. Which someone told me is pronounced "boon". Whatever man, I pronounce my pho "fo so" and bun "bunz". I lost the bonding off my tooth eating their spring roll boon. Ouch. Better start calling it boon. It's good, but completely different than the ones at Vietnam garden. Which bums me out, cause theirs are the best ever. They also don't cost me a $100 tooth bonding. Dang it. For the dinner special, the garlic shrimp is good. Also it doesn't have the devil in it (cilantro, or basil). I don't like herbs in my asian food! Get out of there! It's like when Tyler Florence had a recipe for Bulgogi and he had cilantro in there. Bleck. I went here today, and had a little mishap with service. Sat at the table for the longest time, without menus or anything. My boyfriend finally had to go get menus. Then we had to wait for someone. This doesn't usually happen, so I let it slide, but I was a bit peeved, since my lunch break is constricting. And my beloved Korean cheesecake was wilting away in the one day in the winter that it decides to be sunny and warm. This isn't the restaurant my chinese-vietnamese friend and her family chooses, or my old vietnamese co-worker. I think they're Pho 79 and Vietnam Garden fans. Does MSG cause headaches? Cause I got the biggest one today. Too much pho in a day. "fo sho" Just kidding. But really, does it?? read more

Prior to my yelping habit, I had been here a couple of times. Interior wise, I have nothing much to say about this place, its decent, clean and pretty much average. However, the one thing that makes this place stand out is the quick service. The food will take you to Vietnam, definitely one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Virginia Beach serving a real authentic cuisine. I've visited several Vietnamese restaurants in the area but I consider this as my favourite one. The food in general is phenomenal. I love the "PHO DAC BIET" a beef pho with rice noodles in beef broth topped with eye round beef, flanked beef, meat balls, tendon, and tripe served with fresh herbs and beans sprout on the side. I honestly thought the entire dish was simply exquisite. The broth was perfectly well seasoned, just insanely divine. The fragrant elements elevates the flavor profile and adds texture of the entire dish. I absolutely enjoyed every bite of it. Truly what a wonderful top notch visit. And yes, I will definitely come back. read more

We have driven by a few times within the last year and finally decided to give them a try for dinner. The place appears to be very clean but we decided to order to-go & eat the meals at our hotel. We ordered the grilled pork chop and a shrimp & noodle Pho soup. Everything tasted great with the exception of the Thai teas. They were made too creamy for our liking. Nevertheless. We would recommend here to any one looking for good Vietnamese food. Service was good as well. read more

I was initially hesitant about this restaurant. The waiter took a little bit to start the service. Once they started though my concerns dissolved. They were not packed but they had a steady flow of customers. The flavors of the food are authentic and they have avoided Americanizing the food. If you are not a fan of fish sauce you'll probably not like this place. I had the lemon beef salad to start and the spicy beef soup for my main. The flavors were spot on. I can definitely recommend coming here. I know I'll be back. read more

Saigon #1 has fantastic Pho (soup)! My wife and I came during a snowy night and the pho was a great addition to our outing. When we entered the restaurant we sat ourselves and we waited for about 5 mins for service. There is no music that plays here, but sometimes they have a small TV with the weather channel. We both ordered the Pho Ga (chicken soup). The small is $7.95 and the large is $8.95. I would say the Large is about 25% bigger so it's definitely worth the extra dollar. I never put any of the sauces that are table side into my pho because I like it to be 100% authentic and I personally feel it ruins the flavor, but some people like sriracha sauce. Before your meal they bring you raw bean sprouts, leaves, limes, and raw cut jalapeños. These are for your Pho. The soup is really hot so these sides can add more flavor as they steam into your soup. Rip the leaves and place the other stuff into your Pho! Mix everything together and be brave with the jalapeños because it really doesn't make it spicy. Anytime I feel sick or I want a good soup I come to Saigon #1. The herbs and heat from the soup always wakes up my sinuses and makes things all better. I enjoy the silence in the restaurant with the seldom banters in Vietnamese in the kitchen. This family run restaurant will give you great genuine food that will have you craving more! read more

Pho Dac Biet everything special combo, broth is balanced and has good flavor. My bowl had plenty of meat to make me happy. Only complaints I have, I hate the small chopsticks they use, the table wobbles, the table was dirty when we were seated so we needed to ask for a wipe down. So this is a recent find for me. I love vietnamese food and coming from california, I'm quite spoiled since these restaurants are like on every corner. I've only found one other place with pho and that's pho 79 across the street so I'll do a little comparison between the two. Saigon 1 is a lot smaller in size, but it has a lot more choices on the menu. I also found it cleaner than the other place and much easier to find. I was surprised to find that their spring rolls are significantly cheaper than the other place and equally as good IMO. Their pho was also more flavorful, however they give you less meat. The inner design of the place smells nice unlike Pho 79 which sometimes smells unpleasant due to the use of used dish rags to wipe down the tables. I can see how parking can be a bit of a problem if it's busy, but in general it shouldn't be an issue. If you're coming from norfolk, exit the Newtown exit and make a left. The restaurant will be on your right in a shopping complex. read more

I was actually in the market for a sushi place one Saturday afternoon, but stumbled upon Saigon 1. The smell was wonderful! Or maybe that was the hunger talking? Dislikes: The interior seemed small due to the lowered interior lighting. I ordered the Thai Iced Tea (picture) and unfortunately it's the pre-made kind. After the first sip, there was a strange aftertaste. The set of utensils (picture) didn't include the plastic spoon. I was both confused and disappointed. Neutral: There is a TV, but it's too far away for the front of the restaurant to see it. Likes: I ordered the "all you can meat" pho (#80/ picture). The broth is good: green onion, cilantro, onion, and meat flavors all mixed together. Yum! The staff was very attentive (or bored) and ended up bringing me two sets of utensils (I had moved one set to my side of the table & they probably didn't see it). My Banh Mi (grilled chicken) was great and I loved the roll (picture). Also, there was no chili in it. I'm not a fan of spicy foods, so I wasn't complaining. Star Rating: For a first time, it was a good experience. I feel that I got a good value for the price. Unfortunately, this place isn't as close as I would like for me to be a regular. read more

Whenever I come here, I always get the spring rolls + pho. Their spring rolls are so good! They're fresh and light. The peanut sauce it comes with really ties the entire app together. I'm not much of a sauce person, but I could really use up the entire sauce plate they give out with the rolls. For the pho, I usually get a #79, which includes meatballs + eye round beef. Two different textures to the meat, which makes every bite a little more exciting. They're very generous with how much they put in. The broth is probably my favorite part - add some sriracha and hoisin sauce, and you have the perfect cure to any cold. It's just the perfect comfort food when you're sick, or if the weather out is cold. They serve a side of bean sprouts along with a couple limes. DEFINITELY USE THE LIME. For some reason, I can't eat my soup without the lime. The lime, fresh cilantro, and the broth, just harmonize so well together. Lol. And if you're in the mood for a cold treat, try their bubble tea! It comes in a couple of flavors, and their tea has the consistency of a smoothie. The tapioca is ALWAYS cooked perfectly, not too chewy and not too firm. This place is definitely my favorite pho spot, and the only one I've been going to the past couple years. read more
