Got myself some wonton noodle soup because of a bad bronchitis episode. The DoorDash order arrived quickly and everything was in tact and not leaking or anything. Due to my staying at a hotel, having no way to eat the noodles and wontons without basically putting the entire thing in a long cylinder like container made it challenging to enjoy or eat the food in general. It made a mess trying to break up the noodles that were otherwise dried up and clumped together. The wontons were ok. The broth just tasted like regular pho soup with strong hint of fish sauce or some sort of seafood based agent. Not a fan. I appreciated the fresh garnishing it contained and the otherwise stellar texture of the food. The ambiance is a 5. The non working Vespa by the entrance reminds you of transportation in Vietnam- bikes and scooters. There are red and white lanterns and banana leaf-shaped ceiling fan blades. Cute. Decor has rooflines with clay shingles just like in Asian countries. Service is a 5. You're greeted at the door and told to sit anywhere. Chopsticks, chili oil and glass of water with lemon twist are placed on your table. The condiments seem to be in clean containers. I am not sure how the other reviews indicate that it's the best pho broth in Hampton Roads when mine was mediocre at best: the color and smell seem on point but the taste isn't rich or deep in flavor like P** Ng***n for sure! Additionally I figured why another review indicated that it was pricey where small bowl is about $16. It's because this place introduces the concept of "appetizer" sized bowl which is charged the lowest tier price of almost $12, which then seems to justify the small size to be almost $16! I can only think of kids eating the appetizer sized portion. The ratio of meats/protein to noodle is small so you feel like you didn't get anything substantial for the price you pay. Thoughts as I decided what to order: I initially was thinking about ordering the bun bo hue, but decided that was too risky and easy for them to screw up. The noodles were way too overcooked and broken, he said. Sizzling steak - We thought this would be bo luc lac aka Vietnamese shaking beef, but it turned out massively disappointing. The beef was under-seasoned and not very good. This vegetables that came with the dish weren't typical of a bo luc lac dish. Rice plate w/ grilled Korean short ribs - The meat was grilled and seasoned perfectly. Came with a small side of kimchi. The rice portion is very small and I wanted more rice. Even though it was not our first time eating Vietnamese food, the waitstaff was happy to help us elevate our experience. Hubby has a cold and wanted some pho. I was taking a class at plant house yesterday and this was on the way home so I picked this place to get food from. Idk if it's pho 79 or viet pho. The sign and menu both say viet pho, but google maps and yelp and my receipt all say pho 79. Either way, it was great. I planned on just getting pho for both of us, but then I saw they had bahn mi sandwiches so I thought that might be nice too. They didn't have a tofu bahn mi, so I asked if they had one and the nice lady went to ask the kitchen if they could make me one and they said yes! So I got a tofu bahn mi and got my hubby a beef bahn mi. They had all the yummy flavors of a bahn mi, but there was no sauce so it was a little dry. I added some mayo at home to spruce it up. I'd still order it again though and it was so nice of them to make it for me. For the pho, hubby got the P2 which is beef and meatballs. I got the P12 which has no meat. I still got the delicious beef bone broth though and added fried tofu. It came with all the fixings like bean sprouts, basil, a lime wedge, a few jalapeño slices, cilantro, green onions, and hoisin. We added extra hoisin at home, along with some sriracha. Everything was amazing. It's conveniently located right next to Trader Joe's, so parking was a bit of an issue since it was a Saturday and everyone was at TJs. It was great to be able to go shop there and waste some time while I was waiting for my food to be ready. There were about five tables of people eating. I will never go back. A couple weeks ago, went in to place an order to go, and upfront told counter girl that I had a couple errands, and I would back in an hour....apparently this was too hard for her to comprehend to delay having the order for 30 min. There was no language barrier either. I have worked in food service before, its not hard to do, people do it all the time...and basically there was only 1 other customer..so it was not a matter of being overwhelmed either. I left without ordering , the customer interaction on her part was ridiculous. Went tonight, and the same inept counterperson was there, and even managed to screw up the order even when given the menu #'s to punch in ....how feeble minded or pure lazy can you get. Coming from Northern VA where Vietnamese restaurants are aplenty and stellar, my expectations weren't too high for this unassuming restaurant in a strip mall. But we were very pleasantly surprised. We were a party of 6 so we ordered quite a variety - banh mi, pho, and soft egg noodles. The meat in the pho was absolutely delicious - not fatty and really tender, with a generous portion of noodles. The soft egg noodles with beef were probably my favorite - the sauce was delicious. The banh mi was generously filled with toppings and the bread was a perfect balance of crispy and soft, but the meat portion was a bit small. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. The service could have been better - they got one of our pho dishes wrong and we had to flag someone down anytime we needed anything (extra chopsticks, water refill, etc). We were one of 3 tables on a Monday afternoon so service could have been more attentive. But the food would definitely bring us back. read more

Let's start with what kept me from giving it the full 5 stars and then get to the good part! I had the chicken and egg pho. It promised a soft boiled egg on the menu and the egg was hard boiled. Not a big deal to me personally as I love all types of eggs but my best friend who is a bit more particular than me was present and said she wouldn't have liked this. Thing is, I think it's important to stick to what the menu promises. The broth had a nice light flavor to it but it could stand to be a tad more robust to make it better. The bathroom had two stalls. It was a dated maroon-red early 00's design and very dimly lit. The stall I used had a screw no larger than the tip of a pencil as a lock as if it had been broken off and there was a conveniently placed toilet seat cover dispenser, however it was empty. If the bathroom was a bit more maintained and had an air freshener of some sort, I believe these small tweaks would boost the quality of my experience as well as those of other patrons. Now for the good part! Loved the chicken in my pho. When I usually get chicken pho from other restaurants, the meat would be very dry but they cooked it perfectly and threw dark meat in there. Made a world of a difference! The noodles I've been having around the area when I have pho hadn't been of the highest quality but I love the way this place made them. The waiter was polite and attentive. The inside had a lovely theme to it that it kind of reminded me of some of the themed restaurants I've been to at Disney so it kind of helps distract from the outside world and adds some whimsy fun to my experience. we have been coming to this Pho79 outpost for 4 years. while we found the food and ambiance better than many of the others, over the last few months they have been severely shrinking the portions. it's a big bummer. the fresh spring rolls went from a substantial dish to share, to finger-sized nibbles that doesn't really satiate one person. they raised the prices on ALL pho bowls (small and large) and are clearly using much smaller, shallow bowls. and last weekend we were there the pho came out luke warm. we try and support this business as the service is very good and the ambiance better than many Asian eateries. it's a bummer that management is ruining the experience with bad decisions. no one wants half the food for 20% more the price. read more

This is also listed as Viet Bistro. We've now been there twice including yesterday which was Valentine's day. This is a spin-off of the main Pho 79 that's at downtown Virginia Beach. We actually find it to be better than the original. The decoration and ambiance are okay. It's pretty obviously a converted Italian restaurant, but there's nothing wrong with that. It's soft muted colors overall it's quiet and you can enjoy yourself with just your tables company. The pho itself is tich and delicious. Exactly how you expect to be. They give a good plate of mixed items to stir in. The basil is fresh and includes the basil flower which I didn't realize was as tasty as the leaves themselves. There's cilantro, lime, bean sprouts, and fresh sliced jalapenos. My wife and I both ordered the pho bowl with top round steak. It was thin sliced and properly medium rare. The noodles held the flavor well and the automatically added in green onion and very thin cut traditional onion brought a lot of depth to the pho. For appetizers we first tried the crab meat rangoons but they had substantial thin sliced onion in them. I can't stand onions we sent them back and tried the Springer rolls instead. I've eaten food from Pho 79 a lot- but yesterday was my first time actually dining in. It's one of my favorite take-out meals and they deliver too! I'm pretty basic with my order and just stick to the P1 most days. However, I've never been disappointed when I try other options. They even have a large menu filled with items beyond just pho, but I haven't tried anything from the other sections yet. The broth is super flavorful, and I always add way too much sriracha to get me sniffling by the end of my meal (worth it!) The fixin's are your standard lime, jalapenos, basil, and mung bean sprouts. The prices are just right and you can order three different sizes of pho for every level of hunger. read more
