To our surprise, Pho Nguyen actually serves beer and sake! This has become our go-to pho spot now. But y'all, let me tell you... the broth here is so on point. I add nothing but veggies, jalapeños, and a fresh squeeze of lime. I mix hoisin and sriracha in a little saucer for dipping the meat and basil. The pho noodles are cooked to perfection. I also love that they offer a small bowl option. Nothing makes me feel more guilty than not being able to finish a huge bowl of pho, and here the small size lets me enjoy the noodles, meat, and broth without wasting anything. Definitely order the fish sauce chicken wings. They're so good... a bit on the smaller side, but still delicious. We always order fresh spring rolls out of habit when we have Vietnamese food, and since they make them fresh, they were able to get the shrimp on the side for me. Service is solid, even on a Friday night. They're steady paced, check on you regularly, and we've never had any issues. The decor is simple but gets the job done, and the vibe is casual and relaxed. This place has other soups that I have not seen in many other Vietnamese restaurant like Bun Bo Hu and oxtail pho. The broth has never disappointed me so one may go to places. The Tai tea is a bit too sweet for me, so I didn't enjoy it that much. The lemongrass chicken and grilled beef is yummy. So if I'm not in the mood for pho, that's my next go to dish. Not sure why I waited this long to try Pho Nguyen; I believe I've tried all Vietnamese restaurants in Hampton Roads now that I d lived in this area going 7 years now;but this one! Maybe it was sticker shock back when it was COVID or just a little after so and I saw they were one of the first ones to charge like $20.95 for a bowl of Pho. Of course being 1/3 Vietnamese I know a bowl of Pho couldn't be that much. Anyway, I was pleased to see menu prices are reasonable and since other Yelp reviews rave about this place, I finally caved in. I am very pleased. I ordered Bun Bo Hue, a noodle soup that is harder to make right in taste compared to Pho. So ultimate lithmus test so to speak. I ordered food to go, getting the grilled beef with rice, which is normally one of my staples at vietnamese restaurants and it was not good, especially for the price. It was 50% inedible fat, and very oily. The rice was hard, as if it had been left out for a while. I likely won't be returning, but if I do I will assess the service and space. read more

It's crazy how pass this place on daily basis and never noticed it. Now I'm obsessed! I was craving pho and found this place on Yelp. Upon entering my son and I were greeted and sat rather quickly. It is a nice clean environment. I was surprised how reasonably priced the menu was. I got the spring rolls for an appetizer which were delicious and ordered the shrimp pho and added oxtails. I was looking for some late-ish eats and my friend had been here before, so we decided to pop in. - Parking - Center lot. - Vibe - The restaurant seems a little dated, but it was clean and well kept. The restaurant is a wide open space with booth seating on both ends of the walls and table and chair seating in the middle. Washrooms were clean too. - TLC - The young man working was very nice, polite and super helpful. - Noms - I always have my go-tos at Vietnamese restaurants, but I was feeling more adventurous on this visit. I also wanted to take full advantage of my friend's knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine as she is Vietnamese, so I let her order. Springs rolls - a little on the small side, but well rolled and fresh. Spring rolls are my favorite. Hu tieu nam vang - this soup is like a clear pork broth and includes glass noodles, char siu, shrimp, lettuce, thinly sliced pork, quail eggs, topped with cilantro. I really liked it. The broth was clean, and everything was cooked nicely. Bun bo hue - spicy broth, fat round rice noodles, that grayish meat that is in banh mi, pork meat with bone, topped with cilantro and sliced onions. *Note - they bring out this AMAZING sauce that you are supposed to put in your soup and OMG, I just dumped the whole thing in it. It's a mix of chilis and lemongrass and some kind of salty shrimp! SO good. Don't miss on this. Shaking beef - this was my least favorite dish and my friend said it was too saucy. If you are analyzing the dish by itself (not considering it shaking beef), I thought the sauce was good. This was my first time trying shaking beef, so I have nothing to compare it to. I've seen numerous recipes of it on Instagram though and it did look saucier than the versions I have seen as well. The real disappointing part of the dish was how small the cuts of beef cubes were. I pictured bigger chunks. The beef was the size of a mint. All in all, really great soups. I have my eye on their special next, the oxtail pho! The inside of this restaurant is super cute. The lights are aesthetic, and the wood on the ceiling makes it feel like a roof. The shrimp spring rolls and peanut sauce were delicious. Always gotta have the spring rolls. They felt fresh when biting into them. The pho comes in a King, Queen, or Kids size which is nice. I got Queen because I knew I couldn't finish a King. Take your crown, Queen! My husband got some bbq with vermicelli noodles. Super yummy, the bbq was seasoned well. It was also a good texture, neither under or over cooked. Service was also wonderful. Pretty fast and reliable I typically have pho when visiting Vietnamese restaurants, but I wanted to do something a bit different for some reason *I guess shame on me for not trying pho when the name of the restaurant includes the word, pho*. For my lunch, I went with the fried rice combo dish, which came with fried rice (of course), beef, chicken, and shrimp. I would say that the dish had plenty of chicken and beef, but the shrimp was a bit lacking. I had family visiting for the weekend, kinda later in evening on a Friday night to be prepared, and Pho won out as the dinner option. A 'Place' I used to go was further away, this place was closer and had better ratings! Also, another recent review of this place, eased our decision on trying! We were immediately greeted, but also realized that we were pushing the hours, but the people didn't seem to mind! The inside is nice, open and quaint...I imagine with more people in there it would have the typical sounds/noise levels, but nothing crazy imho. I had their Pho Ga, son had the beef, and I think my niece had something similar. My brother had a sampler dinner plate that looked tasty for the little time it existed! I've been here a handful of times and always went with a Queen size of Pho noodles, specifically the Pho Ga (chicken pho) and have never been disappointed! Perfect on a cold, winter evening after a long day at work/studying. Today I wasn't really feeling a hot dish like Pho so I tried one of their rice dishes for the first time. It wasn't anything crazy new or unique, but I was totally satisfied with my order!! I had the rice and grilled chicken dish that was a cup of steamed rice, 3 chicken skewers, and a small, simple salad. It doesn't look like much but I couldn't finish my rice at the end! The chicken was grilled to crispy perfection and the simplicity of the plate was just what I needed. My bf also tried something new, their Spicy beef noodle soup. He was also satisfied with his dish, and it wasn't too spicy. I will add to be careful about the spice though because it could not sit right with some people. Can anyone truly say anything bad about this place? It's located in a strip mall, and a little hidden from the main road. It's a little shady on the outside, but when you enter it's this beautifully decorated restaurant. I mostly go for the pho. They have different size bowls, and the biggest being a king which can be pretty large for some people (not me). You have the option to chose from the menu pho items, or create your own. Which is nice for those who are specific about their protein choices. The broth is so rich, and it's a delicacy on its own. I definitely recommend this place to all my friends. This restaurant is a great addition to the neighborhood. I really enjoyed the interior decor and the layout of the restaurant. The holiday decor was very nicely laid out. The menu was easy to read and it accompanied a small drink menu. The service was friendly and attentive. The only drawback was the taste for me. It was chock full of veggies, but the tofu was soft and lightly crispy. The tofu was listed as fried and typically when eating it in the past at other locations I've had it where it tasted spongy and no soft/mush tofu texture. The broth was quite lacking in flavor. I really wanted to like the soup which I ordered the pho chay and I even added plum sauce, but I think a vegetable broth or added spice could bring the flavor out more. Pho Nyguen at Lynnhaven. 4 in our party, ages 55, 51, 16, and 14. We started with an app of 6 chicken wings. The menu said fish sauce was optional on them, but ours arrived with the fish sauce on them automatically, and the kids didn't like it. But my wife and I did like it. Different, definitely a unique taste for wings. Left our fingers very sticky, which was weird, because they weren't really that sweet. Maybe they were but the fish sauce masked it. Ok, we all got the king size portion of Pho each. It's there biggest portion per person, but I don't think it's that huge. I'd say it's the perfect. The 14yo & 16yo, along with their 4'11" 100lb mom, and me all finished our own king size bowls, down to the last drop. Literally. Remember, I don't really like Pho... But today, it was really good!!! I was so glad we went and I ordered Pho instead of a rice dish. We left full, with bellies full of warm tasty broth, veggies, beef, sprouts, noodles. Oh, and cilantro. Oh my! This is our first time at Pho Nguyen and it is adorable. Simple and homey and definitely not some chain restaurant. Our booth is so comfortable booth and I've just finished the best Bahn Mi I've ever had. Plenty of delicious juicy pork, shredded carrots and some pickled veggies all tucked into a section of a perfectly crispy, chewy French bread. I'd tell you what the veggies were but I was loving it too much to stop and check it out. Just know they were crunchy and tasty! My SO, who is a slow eater, (giving me time to write this review) is loving the pho he ordered - H1. I've had pho before and was not a fan. But this? Delicious, full of glass noodles, sliced meat, perfectly done shrimp, fresh basil, quail eggs, and beautifully seasoned. I had no idea pho could be so good, it wasn't bland at all! The add ins - jalapeños, fresh bean sprouts, basil, and chunks of lime to squeeze in made it all the more wonderful. This is now our go-to-Vietnamese restaurant. The cherry on top was our server, an attentive, polite young man who hustled to tend to his tables. When we told him how much we loved the meal, he held out his hand and shook hands with us both. I love this local Pho restaurant. It's easy to visit with a big parking lot in a large shopping center by Wal-Mart. Staff is swift and efficient, food is delicious! I enjoy their grilled food dishes best, served with rice and a few veggies. The meats are marinated and come out on a skewer with flash fried scallions. It's so good dipped in the fish sauce! I'm a bit of a baby eating this and have to pull it all off the skewer and cut it up. Rice is consistent and fresh. I like their pho too! Their chicken and veggie broths are tasty and there's a nice selection of additions you can get. They come in kid, Queen (medium), and king (large) sizes. Noodles always fresh and not too sticky. I like the appearance of the restaurant. It's well organized with private-ish booths to either side and larger group tables in the middle. It's always clean and there's not broken tables or wall scratches. The sauces at the tables are clean and tidy. Parking is easy, but it can be busy during peak hours at Sakura next door or Gong Cha. All I've been able to find since moving to Virginia are assembly line pho places like domoishi and little odd shops with weird hours that sell thin flavorless broth with minimal soup ingredients. Pho Nguyen served an amazing Pho with a good banh mi (which I like to dip in my pho). They also have actual chili pasts and oil (not kept on table, gotta ask). All in all, I haven't had a bowl of pho this good since leaving San diego. Even 30 minutes away, this will likely become my go to place! read more
