On a low key Sunday, my husband and I decided to visit Fall River, Mass to explore the amazing Portuguese heritage in the area (also because we're suckers for fresh seafood and chorizo). We attempted to visit the acclaimed Portugalia (a highly rated local market) but unfortunately got there too late on a Sunday. Fortunately, Sagres was open for reservations and we jumped on the chance to visit this local treasure. As we were walking in, we ran into a couple diners leaving, and we asked how their dinner was. With huge smiles on their faces, they said it was amazing, and it was their first time back since the place burned down. Burned down? I would have had no idea. Everything was fresh and updated and seemed liked it was always that way. First impression after sitting down: It's always a good sign when you visit a restaurant and the parties on either side of you are speaking Portuguese to the waitstaff :). This was a true Portuguese community with a strong sense of family. The menu was straight forward with tons of seafood, chorizo, beef and pork. Little neck clams are a spotlighted ingredient on many of the dishes. We opted for paella. Just look at the pictures. It's huge and jam packet with shrimp, scallops, clams, chicken, calamari, chorizo, and what seemed to be a half lobster. It was not dry with a crust like many paellas, but more of the juicy deep dish variety. The broth on its own was amazing, and a perfect complement to the Portuguese bread on the table. We ended up having enough to take home for dinner the next night, and the flavors may have been even better then! Thanks for the great dinner, Sagres. I am in love with Sagres! The renovation is absolutely stunning! I honestly forgot that it ever caught fire. They have to serve the best Portuguese food in all of The Riv. My family went there last month to celebrate my older brother's birthday and we all loved it. It was a busy, busy Friday night and they handled the crowd so very well. I'm so glad they're thriving the way they are. I loooove Portuguese steak and they honestly cooked mine to perfection. Hands down the best steak I have ever had. Their sangria is so good, too! An all-around nice experience at Sagres. That atmosphere is great - simple, clean, dim, friendly; filled with couples, families with young kids, groups of friends. Dropped by without a reservation on a rainy Saturday night and still got a nice table. I like when a menu is short - do a few things really well - and this menu of traditional Portuguese fare had just the right amount of options for each kind of meat specialty. If you're veg, this could be a challenge. I loved the appetizer of spicy red pepper sauce and cold homemade goat cheese - not like anything I've ever tasted - to slather onto the tasty pops (Portuguese rolls). Caldo verde soup was ok. Got the baked stuffed shrimp special and while the flavors were kickin' it was overcooked and the shrimp were tough. My side of "round fries" must've been the last of the batch because the crisp was long gone and they took on the characteristics of shriveled, soft dried apples. For dessert, layers of cream and crumbled cookies in a mini-trifle dish. The cream was just too much and left that creepy texture on the roof of your mouth. Had similar trifles prepared by awesome Portuguese mom-cooks that knocked this out of the park. Reasonably priced wine list of great Portuguese wines to try. Took a day trip from Boston to check this place out. Totally worth it! Everything we had was excellent. The sardines were crisp and fresh, the caldo verde had a rich broth, and the beans and chourico were rib-stickingly satisfying. The real star, though, was the cod fish with potatoes and onions (Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá), I was in Portugal a couple years ago, and while everything else was up to par, this dish surpassed anything I had there. The onions were caramelized and married beautifully with the salty cod and mashed potatoes. Easily the best Portoguese meal I've had in the US and worth a day trip from Boston. I want to preface this by saying I'm not typically one to leave a review. Like most, I review the very good and the very bad. This was a doozy. We walked in at 7:27 for a 7:30 reservation... we were not spoken to in any meaningful way until almost 8, we sat down at 8:15. There were at least 4 groups standing with us for close to 40 minutes waiting for someone (theoretically a host?) to come by. Again, we had a reservation. Multiple times throughout the evening the owner would interrupt the waitstaff while they were with patrons, it was so off putting my jaw dropped multiple times. To be honest, I'm still processing the events of tonight. But the owner is tough and I really feel for the waitstaff. I have been here with my parents for a lovely dinner. We all enjoyed different dishes. My dad had the Paelha A Valencia, my mom had the Prime Rib, and I had the Cedar plank Salmon when it was on the menu. We loved the food and service was great. Had some drinks from the bar -sangria was delicious. Had so much food we had to go boxes, and still made room for dessert Traditional Portuguese Flan Custard and coffee. I am a loyal customer at Sagres for the past 5 years. I have always treated out my friends and family at this place whenever they came to visit the town. I have alway promoted this place as the best Portuguese restaurant in town. Food and service have been ALWAYS good. Today (7/29/18)I had a reservation at 4:30pm. The reservation was for 5 people made under the name Paul. The food and everything was good as always but when we received our check our server tried to trick us by adding $10 at the end saying it was a "sharing fee". When I asked him what the sharing fee was he said it's a charge for sharing foods. He charged us $5 each for 2 people, which made no sense. I was about to ask for the manager but he backed off saying he will take it off this time. He said the sharing fee was something they have been doing for a long time and probably the past servers forgot to charge. It made no sense at all. We had 5 people, ordered 3 entrees and 1 appetizer. As you may know, the seafood portion in Sagres is big enough to share. This is the first time we have been charged for a sharing fee and when I searched on yelp, no one mentioned about it. I am not sure if I want to return to this restaurant but just wanted to share my experience and warn others about the sharing fee. I have eaten at perhaps half a dozen Portuguese/Azorean restaurants in eastern Mass., and Sagres is by far the best. The atmosphere is very warm & graciousy, just like a visit to old family friends. The food is as authentic as it gets - the quejo de cabra (super fresh goat cheese with a red pepper relish) is just like it's served in the Azores. I asked where I could buy it, but was told it's made specially for them by a local woman who brings it in several times a week. I've honestly never had a bad - or even mediocre - entree there. Last night we had swordfish & cod, served with the de rigueur sides of rice & potatoes. (If you eat at a Portuguese place that doesn't give you both I'd be suspicious!). As noted by others, the caldo verde is always a good choice, and it won't fill you up so much that the pleasure of subsequent courses is diminished. The wine list is very reasonable, and I would stringly suggest sticking with the Portuguese entries. If you've never had a vinho verde (literally 'green' wine, but more like a slightly fizzy young white), give it a try with some fish. read more

Oh yeah. This is the real deal. The Portuguese rolls are always fresh and -- more important to me-- so is the seafood! For an appetizer, I love the littlenecks-- both ways: Spanish style, with olive oil & garlic, and Portuguese style, with onions, light tomato sauce, and garlic. (I like the calamari, too!) Other people have talked about how great the soups are, so I'll just say I agree. Love the Shrimp Mocambique (which is offered as an appetizer, but special requests to have it as an entree are usually accepted). My favorite is the espadarte grilhado-- the grilled swordfish. OH boy-- fresh grilled in garlic and olive oil with a roasted red pepper garnish! Like most Portuguese dishes, it comes with an abundance of starches: rice AND boiled potato, plus a vegetable. Again, the kitchen here is *so* very accommodating that they are willing to substitute "extra" vegetable if you're trying to limit starch intake and want to omit either rice or potato. :-) If you're not worried about starch, though, order an entree that comes with "Portuguese fries." These are wonderful fried potato slices just like Mom used to make... such a delight! Speaking of delights... most friends I take here wouldn't look twice at the "bean pudding" item on the menu, but if you want to be pleasantly surprised, try it! It's more like a pie (the same way a "cheese cake" is really a pie in a crust)-- with a sugary crushed-pinto-bean filling. If I'm too full after my generous dinner to eat dessert, I usually get a piece of pudim feijao (bean pudding) to go! That way I have room for my galao! If you stop in on a Friday or Saturday night, though, you'll want to stay around for the entertainment: traditional Portuguese fado, with world-class guitarists and top-notch singers. Definitely worth lingering over dessert... One last word: the serving staff. I can't say enough wonderful things about how attentive, friendly, accommodating, and pleasant they are. Arrived for lunch three days before Christmas so we had to wait a bit. That's ok. Once we got a table the waiter brought us bread. No offer of water. Barely spoke to us ... we gave our order. He came back - slammed our food down and left. Did not check on us one time during dinner. Asked for dessert to go ... they were out. Asked for a doggie box ... waited 15 mins before someone else got it. And the eggs served with the Portuguese steak were served over hard. No yolk? Loved this charming Portuguese restaurant in the heart of Fall River. Bright, clean, modern restaurant with white tablecloths and excellent service. I visited on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch and was instantly a fan. From the fresh baked bread to the authentic Portuguese entrees, every bite was satisfying. I had the cod baked in a tomato based broth with pepper and onions (sorry, not even going to attempt the Portuguese name as I know I will screw it up!), roasted potatoes and rice. Sagres restaurant has a number of really fine aspects. The newly renovated space has a beautiful ambiance and interior decor. The table service was top grade - the owner came and talked to us and gave us wine on the house. I give it 4 instead of 5 because the food wasn't as fabulous as many people tend to rate it. I thought it was just okay, perhaps I'm not big fan of portuguese food afterall, though I reserve judgement until I try it again somewhere else. The only reason for 4 stars is due to the wait we had, which I know sometimes isn't entirely the restaurants fault, but we did have a reservation for 8:30pm and didn't get sat until almost 9pm; and mind you we ever arrived early/on time for the reservation. We were at least able to hang around the bar area, where the bar tender was extremely nice, and then as our large group [there were 9 of us] started to get a little 'hangry', they brought us over Portuguese rolls to hold us over. Once we were sat they were able to take our orders and turn the food around rather quickly... The food was absolutely amazing. Not one person was disappointed with their meal. I actually think there was a few moments where no one spoke a word as we dug in. It was mostly murmers of "this is amazing" "this steak is cooked perfectly" "the seasoning is right on" I ordered one of the steak entrees, which was cooked to perfection and had SO much flavor to it and also had the fresh goat cheese. I'm a huge goat cheese fan, and the table even agreed with me- this was the BEST goat cheese they'd ever had. I will definitely be back for that again. The portions were HUGE, so be wary when ordering appetizers/saving room for dessert. Our waiter was great and very accommodating to such a large group; and was extremely friendly. The atmosphere was amazing, and the decor makes the dinner very intimate whether with a large group of friends like we had, or for a romantic dinner. The place was extremely clean. I had a group of 9, we made a reservation for 8:30pm on a Saturday night. We arrived at 8:20pm and hung out by the bar. Drinks were very fairly priced and bartenders were great. Around 8:45pm our hungry group started to get antsy so the waiter kindly brought us some Portuguese bread which made everyone happy :) Our food came quickly and our waiter did great. Every dish ordered was very delicious! I had the Paella and it was so amazing. Even the chicken in the dish was tasty! The Steak was a popular dish at our table and the sangria was great. The guy who greeted me at the door wasn't the most friendly and service is a bit slow. The food makes up for all of that. Had one of the specials so I can't speak of what's on the regular menu. The special was an octopus stew in a red wine sauce with potatoes which was incredible. The octopus was fork tender! Thankfully they gave me plenty of bread to get some of the sauce. I went here a couple months ago per my boyfriends request. I was not impressed. It was packed but I couldn't see why. The restaurant it self is pretty and all but the food didn't hold up. Bartender was nice but the wait staff seemed to be made up of teenage boys who liked talking to each other rather than doing their jobs efficiently. The food was ok. It didn't taste traditional Portuguese to me. All in all I think it's too expensive for what you get. I'd rather go to my local Portuguese club and get dinner. Went for dinner last nite w a group- everything we ordered was excellent I shared a shrimp Mozambique appetizer- lots of tasty shrimp and spicy sauce for bread dipping! The paella was so good-brimming w lobster, shrimp, fish scallops and little necks- yum! The steak - Portuguese style - with veggies and home made chips looked And tasted awesome. The pork-little neck and potato dish was delicious All of the dishes could have fed 3 people! The newly done over restaurant is beautiful. The tiled scene behind the bar is gorgeous. I went there with high expectations with my family for a good meal and serves. I got the complete opposite. We sat down right away for our reservations but we waited 10 mins for a server to come over. Since we waited sooo long. We decided to order all of our food as soon as our waitress came. I have to say their Portuguese soup was delicious but that was about it. We had two steaks that needed to go back because they were cold. Three other dishes , yes three were so burnt and dry. It would of taken too long to send back. I finished my meal before my boyfriend got his steak back. Then we waited over 20 mins for our server to come. Actually, there was at least 10 mins where there was NO servers on the floor. How do you run a business like that ? By then we were all frustrated and annoyed. I asked for the manager. The manager came up in not an orderly fashion, did not seem to care, did not introduce himself and needs better ways to manage and act like a manager. We will not be returning. I came in 2 minutes before the kitchen closed when I heard the hours I insisted on leaving. They sat me anyway and told my I had time and not to worry. Whenever my cousins and I decide to take a day trip somewhere, Fall River is usually our destination. We always end up choosing one of the local Portuguese restaurants for dinner and so far, Sagres has been my absolute favorite. Everything from the goat cheese appetizer with fresh Portuguese rolls to the thick cut of steak and fried potatoes was incredibly delicious. The large interior is really lovely, I could certainly recommend this as a great place for a romantic dinner date or a birthday meal with friends and family. We've come here before with usually no problems but this time we were not so lucky. The food was great but the service was absolutely horrible. With Covid going on we know that we have guidelines to follow. We had a limit of 90 minutes to sit at our table which we knew ahead of time. The owner came to our table 4 different times very rudely telling us to hurry up and order our meals and to hurry up and eat. We were so rushed to get out of there we did not enjoy our meal. He was also very rude to his employees. Yelling at them in front of customers, it was very uncomfortable to see. Guidelines were not being followed with Covid. The place was packed and tables were not 6ft. apart and everytime he came to our table to tell us that we only have 90 minutes he would remove his mask to talk. Our waiter was great but we won't be returning anytime soon!! read more
