Fun feature: Little library shelf right at the checkout where you can read a book while enjoying…read moreyour coffee. A lot of guests linger to work from this location or read. Tucked in Coventry neighborhood, there's Phoenix Coffee. The first thing you notice walking in is the vibe -- warm exposed brick walls, quirky and ever-changing local art (currently fairytale motif), and the smell of seriously strong, seriously good coffee. The Siren Eclipse art on the wall is alone worth the visit. And the scones? Unreal. Flaky, buttery, and somehow always fresh out of the oven. Really probably the best around. There's also other breakfast snacks like muffins and such. Very limited options but very tasty. Bonus points for the greenery -- the place doubles as a mini plant shop. There's a few leafy ones you can pick up. I got large drip coffee while I was there and it perfectly strong. There's two size options, light or dark roast. The menu also features some seasonal favorites. I had recently spring matcha there that was so vibrantly green. There's also a pretty extensive tea assortment. For warmer months, consider seating outside. They have very fun and aesthetically pleasing wooden benches. Street parking is available in the area but it gets busy. Try parking garage on the street to park. It's free to use.

I ordered the bandit (latte with lapsang syrup) and a mango/guava muffin--the muffin was good, but although made well, I really didn't enjoy the bandit (the lapsang syrup was a lot smokier than I anticipated). Although I'd order something different next time, I'll happily return!

I had never had Yemeni coffee before so I asked the barista for suggestions. Based on the fact that I wanted to also try one of their beautiful milk cakes (like a tres leches), I opted for the Mufawar coffee since he said it was less sweet and a bestseller. It was served on an adorable bamboo tray, piping hot and very strong! It had a unique flavor and paired well with my saffron milk cake. Yes...I said saffron. I was very hesitant to try this after he described saffron to me, so I actually got both saffron and biscoff milk cakes. Wow, this man knew his stuff! The saffron milk cake was absolutely scrumptious!!! And who doesn't love a biscoff cookie?! I had to take that one to go. I hope to return to Cleveland soon so I can try the pistachio latte (a sweeter coffee) and possibly a different flavor of milk cake. The coffee shop was quite large, bright, and tastefully decorated with lots of gold accents. I loved my experience there!

They also carry a variety of cheesecakes which were all very good. Most of all, they open late until 10pm, I tend to visit after 8pm and that is a blessing. Bravo!

Here, this coffeehouse seemingly "belongs" to the university, Case Western Reserve, but because…read moreUniversity Circle is a one mile radius that also includes the main art museum, a music performance hall, and two important medical centers with many buildings for specialties, the Coffee House is visited by everyone. It's called the Coffee House at University Circle, but I've also heard it called University Coffee House. The streets here are gridded and, north of Case Western Reserve University's smaller quad, other academic units and buildings might be found on these blocks. Incidentally, I can explain Case Western succinctly. Just like Duke, Vanderbilt, and Emory might be "Southern Ivies," private and prestigious Case Western and Carnegie Mellon in not too distant Pittsburgh seem like "two peas in a pod" and are STEM powerhouses. The kids in here seem serious and do not come across like partying types. The Coffee House occupies a loosely Tudor-styled older building that might have been something else at one time. It has two levels, with bigger rooms downstairs and smaller ones upstairs. The coffee and tea are fairly priced and there are also sweet and savory items. On the day I visited, I had walked over from the main UH Medical Center, bypassing the Starbucks that is much closer to it. I'm glad I did. I also stumbled onto the day of the week when their big cookies are $1. They feature daily specials. I didn't go looking for cookies, nor for deals on them. I was still expecting to get something to accompany my hot drink - Earl Grey tea. The service was fine. They might make recommendations if you ask and they are patient. There will be CWRU students in here with their laptops open. There will also be faculty members. There will also be people involved in or receiving health care at the medical complexes in University Circle, doing something stimulating the intellect at the renowned and free of charge Cleveland Museum of Art or at Severance Hall for musical performances, partaking in a Meetup, and then some. But I'd say that at least half of those present are connected to academia. It's an imposing large coffeehouse. There's an outdoor terrace out front for when the weather is cooperating. Note that the window of hours is sort of tight and doesn't go too far into the evening. Either way, the Coffee House at University Circle makes for a neat environment for doing the coffeehouse thing, with or without a laptop open.

Favorites include their savory baked goods and cookies When it comes to lattes, so far I've liked their cinnamon brown sugar, and seasonal matchas (the coconut matcha a couple months back was good). It's good as dine-in (plenty of seating inside and outside, though still quite full on the weekends) and as take-out. Plenty of free parking available in a lot. Staff are friendly. Also last month I tried their restaurant week special (includes latte, panini, and choice of cookie or macaron). Ended up choosing the brown sugar latte (opted for oat milk), corned beef panini and gingerbread molasses cookie. All were good, the favorite and definitely would get again would be the latte. Also if you use the too good to go app, I love their bags (such a good variety with amazing value) which sell out in minutes. Definitely in my list of regular places to stop by.

I had to visit the actual store to try other items because it's hard to find quality bread. But.... I read a lot of negative reviews about this place that seemed to have a common theme... poor service. Considering I already experienced their product, I knew these people were SERIOUS about their CRAFT, and people like them want RESPECT for what they consider an art form. These men at craftsmen, not baristas! So I went in with a clear expectation. If you're looking for a typical "cafe" (Starbucks) experience... don't go. You will leave with your feelings hurt. There won't be smiley faces on your coffee cup and service with a smile while selling you inferior products. Go with the understanding you're there to pay respect to the art. The art is the experience. You'll likely need to leave the country to find better... barely and maybe. I had a ham sandwich that tasted like it needs its own chapter in the Bible. Bottom line... go... don't just order coffee... be excited about their art... and like magic... they'll give that energy back. If they don't... it's ok... just enjoy your food and understand this place is a living passion for them, and the intent is to make you smile with great food.
