I am a big fan of this Safeway. The new store layout is beautiful, and they have almost everything that I need stocked, even if it's weird (for example: buttermilk powder, arrowroot, almond meal, taro) - and they almost always will order it if they don't have it. I have gotten all sorts of fresh produce and meat there with no problem. The floral department will is usually well stocked and well priced, and comes with a seven day guarantee. The pharmacy is also great and open until 9pm. But mostly, I like this store because the staff is super friendly and helpful (hint: you have to BE FRIENDLY to them first, y'all). I've had people hunting through the backrooms for more stock, giving me advice on meat cuts, opening the bakery to find me bread, you name it. Also, taking the time to learn the names of the core staff (they also have name tags!) and introducing yourself goes a long way to making their and your life better. (Also, I see the same complaint about this place over and over but honestly: this is an inner city grocery store with a HUGE turnover and stock, so yea, sometimes the produce isn't perfect, or they are out of exactly what you want, or the yogurt expiration date is tomorrow. Just ask them for help or wait until the next day (when there will be a whole new delivery). Also, if something isn't up to par, just return it - they will take it back without a problem.) read more

I just moved from California, fruits and vegetables mecca so this review will be biased. Safeway no mean safe here, when it comes to fruits and vegetables at least. They're expensive, "pruney" and discolored, which makes jasonddo NOT a happy camper. Peace out. read more

Very Clean. New Safeway is great in energy efficiency. great location and has parking. Starbucks, bakery, and warm/cold bar. Also makes breakfast and lunch sandwiches by order. Most workers are very pleasant read more

The flower selection is always fresh which is nice and seem to have plenty fresh veggies available- both organic and regular. Meat selection and variety of cuts and prices are great. Bakery is so/so often seems to be understaffed and the same can be said about the Deli. Wine and beer selection are really good. The reason why I give this place 3 stars is because the prices always ring up different what they are listed for so you have to pay attention at check out. Especially on buy one get ones and sales. Additionally parking can be tight during peak times. Undoubtedly self check out will be burdensome as well. read more

Today I stopped by this location heading home from a hard day at work. As I departed a penny caught my eye on the side where the customer stand to conduct business the black female loudly asked Sir what was that you picked up I responded A penny she says that's not for keeps it belongs to the store (I thought to myself it's on the side of the counter where the customers stand how is it the store clearly the person who dropped it didn't want it and she would never have known it was there if I hadn't picked it up. I proceeded back to the counter handed it to her. No sooner than I turned to depart to never return another penny caught my eye near the floral department I turned and asked if this is the store also and walked out waving my penny in the air thanking the Angels and Ancestors for reminding me they are near at all times regardless of the horrible demeanor people are willing to extend whenever the opportunity presents itself. Not being from DC where there's a SOCIAL STIGMA THAT IS ATTACHED TO THIS CITY THAT IS UNLAWFUL EVEN IN THE MIDST OF A PANDEMIC!!! The way she asked me for it was VERYYYY UNPROFESSIONAL luckily there's more grocery stores and other locations where I don't need to attend this one. There needs to be A sensitive training for people who have to deal with customers. May god smile on her evil soul. read more

Often busy, and missing key items. Always make sure to double check expiration dates on EVERYTHING. This location has no problem regularly selling expired products. read more

This is a very underwhelming Safeway but completely fine for basics. I eat a ton of produce so the most disappointing part of it is how small and unfresh the produce section is. However, I totally love the big bags of greens ($2.50 for a huge bag!) when they have them in stock. The place is definitely way more affordable then Yes, which is nice. But overall, this store just makes me sad, because it continues to perpetuate the cycle of poor nutrition/obesity and income level (to see what I mean, go to the Giant in Columbia Heights on 14th and Park, just a 15 minute walk down the road). Apparently, low-income people don't deserve equal access to healthy food. Also, I've also been harassed here multiple times. I've never smelled anything yucky, though, so I don't know where the "Stinky Safeway" thing came from. Many of the cashiers are rude but there are two African American men (Matthew and not sure the other guy's name) that are always very friendly. read more

Sent a FedEx package to pick up at the customer service desk. It was a case wine that was signed by an employee named, M. Williams. When we went to pick it up, it was no longer there. The Safeway employees couldn't careless that a large box of wine went missing; in fact they dismissed it like it was normal for a package to go missing. When FedEx customer service tracked it, it was never signed out of this Safeway location. Simply put, don't send your FedEx package for pick up at this location as employees consider them for grabs. read more

i wanted to and actually tried to give this place NO stars. First off the smell will knock you to your feet as soon as you hit the door. This place is dirty and makes my toes ball up in my shoes when i walk in. They don't sell some of the most common items that you would find in a 'normal' grocery store. The meat aisle is actually one that i skip right past because i simply don't trust it. There isn't a deli or a bakery. Seafood counter? Forget it! The produce is mostly wilted and poorly stocked (they don't sell flat leaf parsley!). i'll be glad when they take a bulldozer to this building and rebuild from the ground up. read more

I live one block from this Safeway and visit it at least 3 times a week. 2 stars for newness, convenience, and cleanliness: The store is generally clean. Although, I did see a mouse in the aisle one day. 1 star for staff helpfulness, selection, and fresh food quality: The morning/day staff are friendly and helpful; however, the afternoon/evening workers seem very unhappy to work there. They often run out of items before they get shipments in. The produce and meat options are not the freshest. read more

This Safeway has a great setup but they shut down the self checkout lanes way too early. shopping there after 9:00 usually means long lines. The Deli is rarely staffed appropriately and I often have to hunt down someone to help me. Fruit (especially berries) is usually spoiled. There are ALWAYS one or more panhandlers in and around the main entrance and no one is telling them to leave and not harass patrons. read more

It's really a hit or miss in this Safeway. Sometimes the produce is stocked and looks somewhat fresh and other times it's not. Usually use this Safeway as a snack grocery store for brands that can't be found in Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. read more

I call this the "eyebrow" Safeway because it has the whoosh of a roof (marina style) like the Safeway of my childhood. This look used to be the trademark of sorts for Safeway. So in some respects, the appearance is nostalgic for me and like a gem from the 20th century. But this Safeway's like an elderly person who's been neglected. It has an odd smell, crowded junky aisles, and tiles that have been walked on way too many times. The poor dame is in bad need of lyposuction, a tummy tuck, botox and anything else that can spring her back into youth and the 21st century. But there are apparently plans for that in the near future. In the meantime, you'll probably find what you need here but it won't be under the trendy glow of bright lights like the new Giant, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter or even the new Sateway downtown. But it is nearby if you live in Petworth, has parking outside, and meets a neighborhood need. You can run in, find what you need, pay for it and run out, then speed away quickly. read more

This grocery store sucks. I wasn't even able to buy the beer I wanted, despite it being on the shelves. Avoid!

The store is big and generally has most of what I need but the staff is always so rude. And not the cleanest. read more

Safeway - Flies on the serve yourself dry goods area. Inside the bins. - Grocery Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Two or so months into being open, and already this Safeway is a picked over mess--products sitting on floor, loaded on shelves backwards, in the wrong place on the shelves. I'm sticking with Harris Teeter. read more

To be clear this store still offers low quality food particularly produce and prepared food. Costumer service across the board is still low and checkout lines are just unbelievably slow. read more

Safeway's management is terrible: this store (and other Safeways in the District) always has a surfeit of full-size shopping carts but rarely has the smaller carts or baskets near the door. This store gets a lot of pedestrian customers who aren't buying more than a bag or two of groceries, so you'd think they'd revise their mix of carts and baskets, but that would require competence from their management. Seriously - the new store's been open over two years. This can't be chalked up to "the learning curve". read more

Offers a decent selection of fruits, veggies, meats, and other essentials. Prices are reasonable if you use a Safeway club card. Customer service is where the supermarket really falls short. There are never enough employees working the registers, especially during peak hours like the post-work, pre-dinner surge. The result is extremely long lines and waiting times. The second problem is the rudeness of employees, who will sometimes not even try to go the extra mile for customers and who often behave rudely. Manager, do something about the surly attitude of your employees! read more

Why is it that the employees use most of the shopping carts for restocking? Several times, at the Petworth Safeway, there is a shortage of carts because the employees are using the carts to restock items. Shouldn't there be special carts for employees to use? read more

Do not ever order grocery delivery from this store. As with the FedEx packages described earlier, the store will cancel the order and not deliver them, and not refund your money. Someone at the store seems to be making out like a bandit. I ordered groceries on safeway.com for delivery and the store on Georgia Ave in Petworth came up as the closest store to my current address. This was a holiday order, and I suspect they were busy, but cancelled the order and never notified me. Corporate delivery support claimed the store had cancelled the order. However, not only did they mess with my holiday meal, they didn't refund the money charged for the order. They made it appear that they delivered the order, and thankfully I've documented from the first day, that I never received it. It is now nearly ten days since I placed a Thanksgiving order for delivery. Corporate is blaming the store for not submitting the paperwork to cancel the order and initiate a refund. The store claims they don't participate in the grocery delivery program. That leaves me without the holiday foods, I'd planned on, but also out the money. Funny, that their store is available in the selection box and defaults as my closest store. I am preparing to file a police report, as I suspect this may be happening to other people and someone at the store is making out. read more

This is a typical Safeway, it is clean and well stocked. The people who work here are for the most part (there have been a few exceptions) friendly and helpful, especially Leon. Every time I see Leon I leave with a smile on my face; he is positive, friendly, and will always help you out if he can. I wish there were more people like him around. read more

Wrong prices ring up at checkout all the time, causing long lines. Cash registers are understaffed. Bathrooms are locked and there are never associates around to let customers in after their long waits. Apart from location, this grocery store has nothing going for it. Update: Sunday early afternoon is a a peak time and 1/2 of the checkout aisles are closed. Sheer corporate managerial incompetence. read more

In-store experience is fine, but for 4 deliveries in a row I've had terrible service. The delivery trucks never show up in the window they say, and then get angry that you're not there when you weren't supposed to be there. There are always missing items - I mean ALWAYS - that we paid for and have to get on the phone with customer service about. They cannot provide driver numbers because drivers got angry that customers were calling them to come back when their groceries weren't delivered. Also many open packages, no warning call, it's just a big mess. Other stores are going to figure this out faster than Safeway will. In any case, do NOT use their delivery service. I hope their manager gets fired soon. read more

I've never experienced the smell of decay & feces that other people have mentioned.... But I don't like you because you're overpriced (but eh, what grocery store in dc isn't?) & I refuse to get yet another savings card just to get .50 of my 7 box of cereal...that later gets transferred back to my bill in the form of a 10 cent plastic bag. sigh. I think I'm going to give up and move to md. I do like your parking lot tho...meter free for the moment, but at the rate this city's going that may not last long :-( read more

This Safeway is straight up GHETTO! They have nothing. It's small and I was upset because they had no fresh fruit or vegetables....are you kidding me they had nothing. I don't even think they have a deli. The cashier was not nice. She was busy chatting with her friends. I will not be shopping here again. read more

The minute I walked in this place, my eyes started to water from the stench. I walked back out...and I'll never walk back in.

This Safeway is a HUGE upgrade from what it was!! Everything is so organized and stays pretty well stocked. I wasn't too happy with the deli sandwich (the guy didn't know how to make anything) but it's cool. Def satisfied with the overall grocery store. read more

I have been to this safeway several times now because my parents live walking distance. I also frequented the safeway that was here before (only on a NEED basis). It is SEVERAL steps above what it used to be. It is very clean, the isles are organized and the produce looks very tasty. Which is more than I can say for a majority of the safe ways in the area. The woman at the starbucks did take awhile but it was because she had no one helping her so I can't really complain about that. It is a clean store, with lots of options and nice service. I'm giving it 3 stars because they do need to hire more help. read more

Love the new store. It's very clean and organized, which makes my shopping easier. The workers their are very welcoming and ready to help! Parking is convenient and is validated. And it is also metro accessible on the green and yellow line at the Petsworth station, you will see the store right when you coming up from the station. Buses are convenient as well to this location. read more

Did you all not experience the old Safeway that smelled like a sewer!? This store is a gem! Growing up in the area, all I wanted was a bakery and for it to not stink every time I went in there. Now it's new, not smelly, and has a bakery, meat counter and deli! Hoorah!! I've been greeted by employees, unlike other miserable Safeway stores. I've never had a problem with produce. One major annoyance is the bathroom situation and that someone has to unlock it for you. Other than that, this Safeway totally wins with its spacious floor plan and beer and wine. read more

As a person who is in the customer service field, and that manages several stores for the company I work for, I sincerely have a clear understanding on how people can be in this business. However, when it comes to spending my hard earned money, at least 5 out of the 7 days a week, at this location (3830 Georgia Avenue)I do not need anybody to give me a(n) attitude, or show that they have a distain for someone because of their character and personality (e.g. me being vocal about wrong pricing in the store and body language I receive due to me being a part of the LBGTQ community). There have been times that I spoke to the Store Director (Marlene) about how I get treated when coming to the location, by her Front End Management (Jackie, Stephanie and Sarah). While I do believe that she did have these conversations with them, I believe that it truly did not sink in. In fact, their "new/old" Assistant Store Director (Shondell), made me "extremely sick" with her attitude on 4/17 Monday and again today, when I pointed out the discrepancy on their breakfast menu. I wish that she (Marlene), would "revamp" her team to make it pleasant for the customers and employees, that work extremely hard to make this Safeway a family oriented and community based store. For the record, even though I can find myself being rough, at times, every employee, minus "the clique" loves when I come in the store, because I make them laugh, when I noticed that the Front End Management made their day A LIVING HELL! read more

I love the new Safeway! The people in this are very helpful and very pleasant. Being vegan and gluten free I was happy to find lots of options in this store. I have the feeling that the Yes Organic Market will be losing some business that they acquired during the Safeway renovation. read more

I live very close and I personally have not had an issue with the store. A few spills here and there and the Starbucks sometimes is not all that conveniently stocked with the know how or ingredients I need for certain drinks but they are nice. If anything,I love the just for you sales and how I have never have had any problems with customer service nor the people that help with the self checkout. Ironically I have never been through the regular lines because even as long as the self checkout out is , there is never a problem with the wait time or an issue with any of them being closed. Unlike some stores in the area. I also will say that they have most of the organic or gluten free items that I have to eat due to food allergies. So good look Safeway I can forgive you for the horrible service that the one 3000 miles away has mainly due to the area. read more

DICEY! Man this place needs some serious attention. The smell of bad fish permeates the entire store. The produce section is small and subpar at best. There is little redeeming value to this store, even more so since Yes market is now open. I really have nothing good to say except the fact that is in a very good location. read more

Previous Yelp-ers mentioned the smell: that's the first thing I notice, too. When I walked in at 6:30pm ish last week after getting back from work, the security guard was arguing with a man who tried to steal a bag of chips. Hmm... This Safeway doesn't sell booze (!); the prices at Giant and Target are cheaper for select items like bread. The produce can be spotty, but the weekly discounts ($1 oranges or apples or whatever it is of the week) make it worthwhile to stop in, esp. if you are coming from the Georgia Ave metro station. Lines can get long in the post-work hour of 6 - 7:30.. a self checkout would be great! read more

This review is for their bakery. I ordered a sheet cake for my daughter's birthday, and they decorated it beautifully! Plus it was a really good cake. All of the party guests raved about it.
