This review is for the floral department who delivered the most AMAZING bridal bouquets for my September wedding. If you are getting married in the area look here first. Christy (sp?) and her staff made the most gorgeous floral bouquets imaginable for my wedding, for an extremely good price as I was on a tighter budget. They literally looked like they were out of a high-end bridal magazine! Safeway floral is always high quality and I'm thrilled these wonderful ladies were able to deliver exactly what I was picturing. All I did was bring in some photos I liked, gave my general color scheme and some flower suggestions, and they went from there making sure everything was in season and would work with the weather. I could not recommend them enough! They also made awesome boutonnieres for the groomsmen that were a simple white rose with some cool greenery that went perfectly with the bouquets. At this location they have not done a lot of weddings other than providing loose flowers for arrangements, but were definitely up to the challenge, were very willing to work with me, deliver ON TIME, and make me one happy bride at the end of the day :) My Mother in Law kept the bouquets at her house (unwrapped in vases) and said they lasted for over a week at her house, wow. I've occasionally stopped here if I'm getting off 80 and heading home to Incline Village - Safeway is conveniently located and if I need to get something if I've been away for a few days, then I have popped in. Recently, though, the last few times I've been here, the lines are way too long and there never seems to be enough staff to take care of people and get them bagged and out of the store. I don't mind waiting, but if you are waiting because the staff seems slow, then that's a problem - usually, they are yelling for a price check or there's something wrong with a cash register or.... who knows. I was trying to buy alcohol today 4/18/22 and after waiting in the checkout line for 10 minutes was accused of using a fake ID and was not allowed to purchase any. They said my ID was faded, and that it was Nevada. Both of those circumstances meant I could not purchase. And I'm 24. Writing this post to complain about Glen (middle-aged white cashier wearing cowboy belt). Three friends and I (all 22 y/o) were in the check out line with alcohol and he asked all four of us for our IDs even though just one was buying. When two of us didn't have our IDs, he said OUT LOUD "fucking kids." Then proceeded to be incredibly rude the rest of the check out time. Don't worry, I'm not trying to inflate my review numbers by reviewing chain grocery stores. But I'm doing so for two reasons: 1.) This safeway is like every other Safeway which is actually a good thing. Clean, slightly expensive, not amazing but dependable. The difference though is that unlike other stores in the Tahoe region, they don't rip you off even though you are right by the ski resorts in winter and camping/hiking/rafting in the summer. The prices are fair and similar to other stores in the region. 2.) The starbucks in the store is only 4 doors down from the starbucks in the strip mall. The strip mall starbucks is ridiculously packed. Stop in Safeway instead. It'll save you 10-15 minutes in the morning before the slopes (in winter) or driving to your outdoor fun in the summer. read more

Very good selection on food and other items. This store needs to paint a crosswalk (yellow paint) for the 2 entrances in/out of the store. It's a madhouse getting in and out of the parking lot near the store. Plus putting food items near the Blockbuster video machines - not good. See how many people leave with items and not pay. Safeway in Truckee is a major disappointment. Be prepared to wait in long lines because, during their busiest time of the day, they only open 3 checkstands causing long lines with as many as 15-20 people filling an entire aisle in line waiting to make purchases. The last time I was there, 5 checkstands were closed and the market was packed with customers. read more

This is for the sandwich area: if you want to experience the slowest customer service, you should go there. The staff was extremely rude to us, and gave me a quite awful attitude. If I can rate a zero star, I would do that. This is the worst Safeway store experience I have ever had. If you provide service that's awful, your business won't last very long. By far the worst grocery experience I've ever had in my life. Worse than any grocery experience I've had in any other country. This place is total hell, almost as bad as a busy the DMV. At least at that place you get to sit and wait for them to call you're number. All you get here is the chance to hear local customers talk to the checkers about local gossip. They take all the time they want being chatty. The checkers can be overheard talking about how they get paid more to work at this location and are willing to make the trip for the extra money. They talk about how they dislike all the crowd and that they are aware that their line is slow and that they don't care, it's all the same top them. So maybe worse than DMV. 30 minute lines are way to common. Empty shelves all the time. Not sure how they get away with this. It sucks. It's been this way since day one. I've been shopping at this Safeway since it opened in this location. Before that it was in the hardware store on the next block up. I've been a resident, I totally understand the relationship that locals have with everyone else, especially the flat landers. The fact Truckee is a ski village in the winter and a nice escape for people in the summer. That's never going to change and the Safeways well never be uncrowded. Come at high season and you'll have plenty of company. The lines for the cashiers are exceedingly long! Fortunately, you can speed up your departure by using the self-check lanes: there's a single line for a handful of self-check stations, and Safeway personnel lurk around to deal with problems that trigger red lights at stations. While you can't scan alcohol at the self-check, a staff member will come over to check our your alcohol if you've waited in the self-check line. The produce that we bought at this Safeway was of "supermarket quality" and no better. On the other hand: I pretty much liked the made-to-order ham and cheese sandwich that I ordered at the deli line. The "French roll" that I chose as my bread tasted mighty sweet to me, but otherwise the sandwich was A-OK. Also, I bought a bag of pre-ground Peets coffee at this location and was perfectly happy with the coffee I made when I got back to my temporary Tahoe "home". read more

This review is for the meat department. I'll keep it short and simple. I've never experienced lazier employees in my life. We wanted a trout that was larger than what was available. The guy told us we can only get what we see cause, "I have to pull the fish out and look for you." We also wanted a ribeye that was larger than what was available on the shelf. "Well, I'd have to cut another piece. You can't buy two smaller pieces? My other guy is walking around somewhere. He's wearing the same apron as I am. You can look for him..." Waited 45 minutes in line to pay. The first time this happened I thought maybe something had happened that made them short staffed but the next weekend it was the same thing. Apparently it is policy to be understaffed and just make the customers wait and wait. You will be out of business doing this. Next time I will buy all my stuff before coming to Truckee. The town of Truckee has worked had to attract out of towners but Safeway has made it clear that we are not welcome and we should take of business else where. No more Safeway! read more

Got a sandwich from the deli.. Taste good but customer service was awful! The girl who helped us and did our order was RUDE!!!

Hate to write this because I been a customer for 10 years. The store has taken a major people change over ... and for the bad these past few months, in my opinion. I used to know about 5 of the employees by first name. Now, I only have 1 friendly face. It seems that all the white people are leaving and being replaced by latinos. And the store has a young new Manager whos is also latino. Today, throughout the store I hear open chatter on the floor between associates in Mexican. Since, I don't understand ... I'm always uneasy with the possibility that they are talking about me. Problably not, but I'm still made uneasy with my Safeway experience now. What's worse and surprising, the Store Mgr (Gaby) talks in Mexican to her employees, in front of customers, so its hard to complain formally to her. Very unprofessional and disturbing to many Safeway non-latrino customers. When I talk to my one remaining friend, she says that most of the associates are very unhappy with the NEW latino manager and that she favors here ethnicity over the existing staff. Many have left and the replacement is 100% latino. When I ask for help now, I have to search for a white associate. Because the last time, I asked for assistance and went to a latino ... she didn't understand my request and just looked at me strangely and told me to go to the customer service. Yes this place can get insanely busy but if you plan your trip with a shopping list, team effort and off peak shopping hours, then it will be a successful trip. I suggest that if you do shop here for the weekend, gather up a bunch of friends and each take a few items from the shopping list. Then all scatter around at once grabbing your items and you will be out of there within 30 minutes. We did this on Sat morning this past weekend and it works well for teenagers as well who have short attention spans and don't want to be there in the first place ;) Other then the long lines and high traffic times, this store is pretty great! It's big and stocked full of really awesome produce. I was impressed and hung out there for most of my shopping trip gathering up all of the brightly colored veggies and fruits to make our meals. Our line was short and our cashier was friendly and quick. So was the bagger. We bought $200 worth of groceries and were in and out in 30 minutes. I always have no problem with parking...just be careful crossing the parking lot as many drivers in HUGE trucks are in a hurry and are not paying attention and might hit you. If I could give 0 stars to this Safeway, I would. The employees can't get their information straight on what they actually can and can't serve at the deli. It's probably because the managers can't get it together when it comes to the rules. I've gone to this Safeway on multiple occasions to get a ham and egg breakfast burrito and twice I've been told by two employees they can't make them with ham as it's not allowed. Whereas on other occasions, other employees have made it without issue. I even asked the ones that made it with ham if it wasn't allowed and they said that wasn't true. Talk about inconsistent training and inconsistent messaging. Who's running this place? This is the most frustrating experience ever. It's like I'm rolling a dice every time I go to see if I get to order a ham and egg breakfast burrito or not! What bothers me even more is that I used to work for this company and never heard of such inconsistent messaging to any customer. This place is horrible. read more

This really is as good as it gets here in Truckee! It is one of the nicer cleaner Safeways I've ever been in here in CA. Honestly I would never review a big chain grocery store business but the staff here was so helpful to me the other day. I was in my car in the parking lot and looked in the mirror and noticed my earings in which my grandmother had given me and while in a aisle felt my ear and it was missing. I was so upset looking around one of the employees asked if they could help and I said I dropped an earing. They took me to lost and found and it wasn't there. The manager asked some employees to sweep the entire store to find it. Luckily I got it back and I think they went above and beyond to help. read more

This Safeway has the impression it doesn't need repeat customers. NO MANAGER on the floor. NO ONE behind the counter to ask questions of ...like why aren't all the checkouts stations open???? It must be nice to think that it is ok to just have 4 checkout stations open, no express "under 15 items" available, 17 people in line to check themselves out because each of the four lines that were open had at least 8 people waiting. When you are in lines, they run clear down the aisles so no one can get through. After waiting 30 minutes, and with 4 people still in front of me, I put my 5 items down and left. I went to Save Mart where the prices are a third of what they are at Safeway, employees were friendly and all checkouts were open, Three others in line had also come from Safeway with the same feelings as me. I won't ever return and when I get back to Phoenix, Arizona I am going to start a boycott with my friends in an effort to get people not to go to any of there stores. If this was the first time this had happened it would be different but this is the 4th time in two weeks with the same outcomes and no changes. From local people who live in Truckee, they explain that Safeway won't do anything about it because they make too much money at this store. REALLY??? Maybe they haven't seen a grassroots program against them yet!!! I am suggesting people boycott the Truckee Safeway until they fix the problem!!!! read more

As we were purchasing our groceries the other night, we remembered that the icy driveway to the cabin we were staying in had not succumbed to the melting powers of the small amount of driveway salt in the cabin's garage. So we asked the cashier, then a stockboy, then an assistant manager-type if they knew what isle the driveway salt was located in (we were hoping to buy the biggest bag possible -- otherwise my crappy 2WD Nissan Altima would have little to no chance of escaping Truckee).. Now, you'd think that a supermarket in a mountain town would get more than its fair share of requests for an item like driveway salt (especially in late December), and you'd think that if you asked three different employees if they knew where the driveway salt was, at least one of them could point you in the right direction. You'd be wrong. I managed to extract my car from the driveway, but it involved a pair of pliers, a blow torch, and a clown suit. Needless to say, we never got our hands on that driveway salt. I moved away quickly but it appeared to be an employee (perhaps) wearing a face shield but no mask. I only shop at places that strictly enforce health guidelines. 3.5 stars. Part typical safeway. Part tourist trap. It's not that they have touristy merchandise over priced that they sucker you into buying- it's that the tourists actually get trapped here. We hit this store just before 4pm (read just about the times the slopes close) after driving up from Los Altos. Our job was to buy the perishables needed to feed our group for the weekend & then head to our cabin to stock the fridge & welcome later arrivals. Let me tell you something about the state we were in. I had been car sick the WHOLE way up and slept for much of it to avoide the nausea. Myd aughter was tired of being confined and just wanted to run and jump. My husband was tired from the driving and just ready to relax and have a bite to eat. So we were in great spirits for grocery shopping. (sarcasm) We found everything we needed, though some of the produce looked a little tired and we opted for other things. It did take us some time to find things because this is not our regular grocery store. All in all it was a decent shopping experience & the employees were nice. The other customers, however, were overwhelmingly yougn adults just coming off the slopes, running around and yelling to each other about who was gonna getteh steaks and what booze were they gonna buy tonight. My daughter almost got knocked down/run over a couple of times by said young adults who were too self involved and in too much of a hurry to notice that there were people shorter than their site line in their path. So in their mindless running around and trying to be fast, fast, fast in their shopping transition from slope to party, they seemed to be stuck int he store, running from side to side, from aisle to aisle, taking out small children along the way. read more

Probably the worst birthday cake I've ever purchased. I ordered the cake several days in advance. When I came to pick it up, the staff couldn't find it. Someone was finally able to locate the cake nearly 30 minutes later after I already purchased another cake. The cake was lopsided, crooked, and had chunks of icing gouged out of the side. Look: 2 stars -- doesn't have the shiny browned, artisan look that most other bakeries have Freshness: 5 stars - baked fresh daily Taste: 5 stars - has the sour tanginess of sourdough - even better than boudin or le boulanger. Texture: 4 stars - soft interior, slightly chewy exterior skin, but they could do better with the skin. For the store, itself, they have a good selection of goods as do all safeways. But prices are higher than other markets, especially on the fruits and vegetable sections. I never thought I'd see a grocery store like Safeway I'm the vicinity of Lake Tahoe! Of course, I didn't know the area well so this was probably normal. lol It was definitely good to see there and whoever comes up to this area will be able to buy groceries and anything else they might need. The parking lot was large and we didn't have any issues finding parking. The inside looked very clean and organized from what I saw. We didn't buy any food but some medicine that the others needed. There was a Starbucks inside so that was nice even though it was closed when we went there. This place also had those self-checkout machines so you can pay for your stuff quick and easy. Ridiculous. No care or concern. Why doesn't this store have more employees helping out? Took forever to order a sandwich at the deli then had to wait in line with everyone else. Only two lines in all checkout stands working. This is at 5/6 pm when they are busy and no employees to work the checkout stands. We went there around 4pm on a Sat and there wasn't much line. (hey, it is nothing comparing to the Bay area Safeways) . The store has very good selection for Truckee. There were sure plenty of alcohol and yogurt selections. :) Lastly... i want to say the 'Fudge Brownie with Chocolate Chip Cookie' from the bakery is to die for. While renting a house near the Safeway on Donner Pass In Truckee, my family spent a great deal of time buying great tasting shrimp, salmon as well as steaks and all kinds of breads and produce in this supermarket. What impressed me the most was how incredibly helpful the checkout staff was and I'll give you a few examples. On one very busy Saturday evening, when every aisle had 10 to 15 customers waiting to pay and when we finally got to the checkout register, the Safeway person offered us a " prize" for our patience! She insisted on not charging us for our bags and was so sweet that I'm only sorry I don't recall her name. This afternoon, while we were waiting to pay for our groceries, Crystal, realized that the gentleman in front of us failed to put in his customer Service phone number, and was entitled to a $6 refund. Although he had already paid with his credit card, Crystal had him give her his number and she handed him six dollars in cash! Although we only saved $3 on our purchases, I was blown away by the efforts that the staff puts in to make sure that the customers get great service at impressive savings! read more
