I visit Truckee for a few days 2 or 3 times per year. Rent a condo, so I cook a few meals. Do the food shopping at this Safeway. It is always super busy and crowded. I feel it's more dated and less cheery than the Safeway stores in my town, Roseville CA. The aisles here in Truckee seem narrow, hard for two opposing shopping carts to pass each other. Inventory seems smaller than a big city Safeway. The wine section here is much smaller. We bought a small cake. The quality was not up to that of our home Safeway. During our recent visit, during the week, there were depleted stocks of essentials. The egg fridge was nearly empty. If you are from a big city that has a more modern Safeway, this one is going to be a disappointment. So just get your essentials, get in line, pay and get out. I used to live near a Safeway in South Reno. It was a newer store but they had good inventory, lots of varieties within the premium brands, and the sales/promotions/coupons were frustrating.. but generally accurate. At this Truckee store, the product coverage is weaker, and I keep finding that the advertised prices don't ring up, even if you scan and/or clip coupons. I asked during my most recent visit, and the cashier confirmed that I didn't miss any steps.. it just wasn't in the system at the advertised price. This Safeway was mediocre due to inflated prices and the presence of yuppies walking around the store. It was more crowded than expected for a Thursday evening at around 6 PM, which definitely affected the ambiance. I had just rushed in with my wife to pick up a couple of things for dinner. Fortunately, my wife found a great deal on a 12-pack of Elysian Space Dust, her favorite beer. Good luck being able to park in the designated curbside pick up area (75% of the time I circle and end up parking in the back 40 of the lot). My latest experience has caused me to commit to using ANY grocer except Truckee Safeway. I paid for express curbside, couldn't park, the curbside pickup phone was not working (Called 5 times) and ended up having to go IN the store to say I was here for my curbside express pickup. I've never loved this safeway, but decided to stop in to grab some chicken tenders for lunch. As I went to turn into a parking spot there was a guy standing in the spot. His friend in a gray Nissan Z snaked in and stole the spot right in front of me. I was pretty annoyed, but not the grocery stores fault. At least that's what I thought until they got out wearing Safeway hats and proceeded to go work at the deli where I was getting chicken tenders and were very unfriendly. Safeway located in Truckee, CA is a good spot to Go if you'll need some grocery's when staying near North side Lake Tahoe area, they mostly have everything you'll need from Vegetable's, Fruits, Water, Adult beverages like Beer, Wine, and Liquor etc and frozen goods like Tv Dinners. One thing that I don't suggest is buying their steaks here it's very high in price (IMO) I wanted to get RIB EYE steaks And it was price so high like two steak slabs for $50-$60 dollars, I'd rather drive up to COSTCO at RENO (30 min drive) and grab their RIB EYE STEAKS there way cheaper and I'd say better quality and quantity. Over the past several years, during the holidays this store has always been way understaffed with only two or maybe three checkout lanes open and lines down the entire isle taking nearly 30 minutes to check out. Not this year!! The staffing was excellent with all check stands open every time we went to the store and well stocked. Lines were relatively short (given the Holidays) and compared to Raley's, the inventory was outstanding. Walked over to customer service and they said alcohol price is not guaranteed so basically meaning any price you see on alcohol can be charged at a different price and Safeway won't honor the price shown. Waited for 24 minutes for someone to help In the meat department to be told to just grab the meat in the package. There was multiple people asked to help One girl told us to grab the package, when we asked for the manager she said ya go talk to my mom in the front, when we continued to ask for the manager she stood there and continued to tell us it was her mom & she was in the front. If I could give this store 0 stars I would. Safeway I suggest you go in there and clean up the employees. Typical Safeway, almost always overpriced. However sometimes you can get a really good buy on meat.. Found some lamb T-bones for five dollars a pound. They only had two packs left of 10 each. Just enough for a family of six. We don't normally stop at Safeway, however when you're camping you don't have a lot of options. Nice to find a good price on some lamb. As in my review of Starbucks. We are pulling a 26 foot trailer and there's absolutely no place to park. We found a edge along the sidewalk that had a bunch of rocks and we were able to squeeze in next to it where people could go around us. But really no place for RV parking. read more

Bottom line: it's a relatively big Safeway with everything you need: milk, eggs, meat section, fresh fruits, canned items, and alcohol. It's about 6-miles away from Northstar/Ritz Carlton, so a relatively short drive to get your essentials for your cabin/condo/lodge/room. It's about 2-miles down the road from Raleys near Tahoe airport so if you want o save some money and come down here, it may be worth it. - Customer service was average - Venue was clean and items were well stocked - Just beware of holiday shopping like anywhere else and build in time to stay in line. Well it's a safeway in a place that otherwise might not have a big grocery store. My impression is it's serving a lot of the tourist community -- I was there on a Friday night doing shopping for my own ski vacation -- so prices might be a bit high and grocery stores as a whole have become less service oriented. The self checkout line moved relatively quickly and they had lots of stuff but nothing too specific (e.g., if your looking for more rare spices you probably won't find them there). From produce carts blocking aisle after aisle to long lines with just a couple manned checkout lines is ridiculous. It's okay as far as Safeway goes. Not the best location I've been to, but it's nice to have the option late at night when everything else is closed. We stopped here around 9PM on the way back from Reno for snacks and a bathroom break. The bathroom was pretty gross, probably the worst I'd ever seen at any Safeway chain. But other than that, the service was fast and efficient. We were in and out within 15 minutes! Great place to get groceries, but rethink where you want to use the bathroom if you're stopping here for that. read more
