Stella is a restaurant located in the Gravity Haus Hotel (Previously The Cedar House Hotel) in Truckee. Their focus is on high quality local sourcing within a 100 mile radius of Truckee and North Lake Tahoe. We were staying nearby and hadn't tried this fine dining restaurant yet. Chef Marshall Smith. 4.3 rating on Google and Yelp. The restaurant is located in the hotel complex in a modern wood building with an attached fully enclosed and heated exterior patio. It not a large restaurant and not overly filled on a Friday night. Food was better than we expected. Both entree hit the mark. Service was solid. They provided good help with ordering and all our needs. Food Review: HAUS FOCACCIA -- ($10) 3 pieces, made in haus fresh every day was a little more brittle than we liked but solid flavors and texture. High quality olive oil and vinegar in a cool container. 9/10 HEARTH ROASTED BEETS ($19) burrata, pistachio, blood orange, raspberry vinaigrette, mint was a beautifully plated salad. Nice fresh balanced beets, cheese and fruit. 9/10 ORA KING SALMON ($52) lemon dill beurre blanc, quinoa roasted vegetable medley was a huge portion of beautiful salmon. It was cooked perfectly and accompanied with a nice quinoa bed. 10/10 PAN SEARED SCALLOPS ($48) orange marmalade, roasted mushrooms, arugula, pistachio crumble had 3 large scallops cooked perfectly with a nice fruity and nutty accent. The current iteration of Stella is fantastic. It's a very nice balance of great food, a relatively casual and non--pretentious vibe and a simple menu. The open kitchen concept really highlights the talents of the head chef. Most of the entrees are made using a combination of sous vide, with finishing happening in a wood fired oven. Every one of our dinners was finished perfectly. I requested a substitution due to an allergy and there was no lecture or shaming about how that would be impossible or difficult. That earns the service staff and chef an extra star. I really appreciated seeing the calm interaction and flow between the host/manager, chef, sous chef and servers. If you have ever been stressed out watching "The Bear", it's the opposite of that. I think Stella may be my new favorite place in Truckee for nice dinner out. read more

This one has been on my list for a while. We ended up making a reservation here while family was in town. It's a beautiful space with lots of wood beams and glass - would be neat for a reception space. We started with scallops and pita bread as appetizers. The portions were tiny - even the pita bread! Disappointing. Service was friendly but very slow....the kitchen is small and could not seem to handle the demands of the diners. We got a mix of chicken, pasta, and steak and salad for entrees. Tried out this spot last month with some gfs. We were really excited to try it based on the reviews and menu offerings. The staff greeted us right away and were kind enough to take some photos for us. The place was pretty easy to find although there isn't a ton of parking. We got lucky and it wasn't super packed but was busy enough. The place is well decorated and loved the overall ambiance/vibe. The wait time for the food was much longer than we expected but we weren't in a rush at all so didn't mind. We appreciated that they brought over an appetizer for us to munch on that was complimentary...so thoughtful! We noticed there was only one chef in the kitchen which seemed like way too much work for him to handle. Not sure if they were short staffed that night or if he's the only one there every night. Poor guy, would probably get burnt out overtime. Regardless, we didn't really mind waiting and appreciated the thoughtfulness. The server made great suggestions and answered all of our questions. I order the steak and mashed potatoes with broccolini. I asked for medium-rare and definitely got more on the medium side...not a huge deal as it was very flavorful so I was still happy. The mashed potatoes were fantastic and the broccolini was the best broccolini I've ever eaten! Perfectly cooked but I was bummed in that they only gave me one piece:/ would've been nice to have 3 or so:/ Most of my friends enjoyed their meals although one of my friends didn't really enjoy her beet salad tbh. The staff also comped our dessert which we shared. I can't quite remember now which we ordered but it was great! Was a chocolate torte I believe, if memory serves me correctly. Great food, friendly service, nice setting - good vibes all the way around! Made a last minute reservation for two on Open Table - and ran into my nephew on our way. While most twenty somethings would rather not spend a Saturday night with their aunties, my nephew is not one to pass on a free meal so when I invited him to join us, he happily agreed. When we arrived at the restaurant, on a busy holiday weekend Saturday evening, I asked the host if we could change from a table for 2 to 3. He informed me that they were booked and didn't have any big tables. I was bummed but thought we'd have to go elsewhere because it's not every night that my sister and I get to enjoy dinner with our favorite nephew. Then the host mentioned that the table was small and that we would be crowded - oh, is that all? He doesn't know that we are gritty folks and a tight squeeze at a table would never be an issue if we had a good meal. We assured him that we were fine (it was our fault afterall!) and we proceeded to enjoy a lovely evening of delicious service and gracious hospitality. Between the three of us we enjoyed: Sunflower Cesar - solid Mushroom soup - standout Steak Frites - good Short rib - amazing Scallops - melt in your mouth good. I never leave bad reviews - I am making an exception for Stella. We so wanted to love this place, the ambiance and decor and open kitchen were spot on. The food and service were in a word, miserable. We waited for 40 minutes for our entrees, the beef short ribs were dry, chewy and inedible. At a $52 price point they should be perfect. We sent it back and asked for the chicken, after 15 minutes a bone dry barely seasoned chicken breast was served. We promptly stood up and went to the cashier to get out of they and they attempted to charge us for the beef ribs. I was appalled. We will not be back. Beware. read more

The location at gravity Haus is very convenient since we were straying there. Service is a little slow, but the food was excellent. Really enjoyed our pokey appetizer, which was more like a tuna stack with marinated tuna, mashed avocado avocados some blood orange on top, which was a nice touch and sesame seeds. my husband had the filet mignon with chimichurri which he enjoyed. The food : amazing, we enjoyed our meals and all dishes were delicious, every component was tasty, carefully placed on your plate , the sauces : lots of flavor and we just enjoyed to the last bit . It was a special occasion, glad we went to Stella , it took a bit to get a table free for us in the area they welcome patrons with dogs but we appreciate a restaurant being Dog friendly ! Food was delicious and presentation very nice. Calamari was interesting, sitting on a bed of a soy based sauce with a yellow spicy sauce. The salmon presentation and flavor were excellent. Those in my party had steak frites and braised short ribs, which were equally delicious. Bread was corn bread like with a subtle sweetness. We sat at an outside patio which was pleasant and warm. We stayed at the Gravity Haus so we have been enjoying breakfast here but due to ice and snow we couldn't meet with our family for dinner and Stella accommodated us. The food was fabulous. We started with the cornbread baked with the miso butter. It was really good. Maybe the best cornbread ever! It was moist like cake and so delicious! I had the chicken dish served over sweet potatoes and peppers. It had a bit of a smoky taste but not overpowering and was in a spicy but sweet sauce. Very very delicious. My husband and son had the wagyu double double with fries and reported that it was one of the best burgers ever! Service was very good! They only have wine and beer in the restaurant so we did have to go to the front desk bar area for cocktails. We had espresso martinis from there and they were very good. My main grievance was the way they handled a food allergy for my 2 year old. Most restaurants take allergies for young children seriously, so I was very surprised that a nice seeming restaurant like Stella handled this as carelessly as they did. (The food wasn't good either, but more on that later) We let our server know about our kid's allergy at the beginning of our meal. She honestly seemed a little zoned out when we mentioned it - just sort of half nodded and didn't comment. So when the cornbread came out, we asked again about the allergen. She assured us that the cornbread was safe. 20 minutes later, she tells us that after double checking with the kitchen, that the cornbread did indeed contain the allergy. (Our toddler had already ingested the cornbread due to the server's initial assurances.) This news came with no apology or offer to comp anything. Seriously, what the f*ck? Besides this, the service itself ran very behind and was not super friendly. They weren't rude per se, but were not particularly nice either. The lack of friendliness would be fine if the food was great. The food looked nice and like it should've been good, but the flavors and textures missed the mark. The cornbread was dry and measly portioned for $15, wagyu burger was overcooked, and the salad was underwhelming. We tipped 20% and really regret doing so. read more

What a delicious meal! I started with the tuna tartare, beet salad, and a comforting bowl of squash soup. Each dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. I also shared the Black Cod, the Filet Mignon, and the Steak Frites with my friends, and all three were absolutely outstanding. A solid spot for dinner that I'd like to return to. I have 2 kids, so sitting down for dinner is a bit of a tough spot, but this spot actually has a nice little courtyard area the kids could run around in, so bonus! It's a hidden gem as its this beautiful separate building from this bougie small hotel/resort. We sat outside in the covered outdoor area with heaters and it was lovely. This space is truly a very chill, rustic and lovely spot to eat. Menu is small and you will see ingredients are being used in many dishes, I'd imagine to keep cost and waste down. As one can expect, prices are expensive, but not more so than any other spot in the area, and as mentioned, the spot was lovely and not crowded. The food was solid. Staff mentioned the chef was out of town, so not sure if that affected anything. Prices were adequate for portion sizes, but as mentioned the menu was limited: cioppino, short rib, burger, chicken and a risotto. The server recommended the burger, but we went with the short rib, chicken and risotto with the risotto being the favorite. Kids pasta at $10 was reasonably priced, but I feel like the kids cheeseburger was $18 which is pricey. It came with a ton of big ole fingerling potatoes, which indeed is not the most kid friendly, but they were delicious for the adults. While service was kind, it was lacking. We went family style and they didn't bring serving utensils of any sort, even for appetizers, even after requesting. We asked for a few other things that took a wee bit long to come thru with, if it came, which not the biggest deal, but for a more upscale spot, one expects a bit more. Overall, a solid first try. What was not expected it was Valentine's Day I thought I made a reservation for 6 o'clock only to find out there was no reservation when we got there. The team was so nice & exceptional taking care of us. They said if this next party does not show you we can take their table. We lucked out with that one, we got it. I wish I could give more than 5 stars because this place is a must try anytime I'm in truckee. The food was amazing, the service, great, and the atmosphere was nice. For appetizers we had the nectarines, heirloom tomatoes, foccacia and burrata, and the ahi flatbread. Everything was delicious but my favs would be the burrata and ahi flatbread. For entrees we got the steak, lamb special, sea bass, and burgers. The steak with chimichurri was amazing and the fries with black truffle aoli were so good. The tomato purée on the steak and sea bass was also great. Everyone loved their entrees. I have kids so i asked if they had cups with lids and she looked like she knew nothing. Waited some more before a waiter-Porter came to take our orders. We order appetizers and a salad. He brought us cold focaccia with dips. We had asked to taste two wine. He dropped it off and didn't come back to see if we wanted to order a bottle. We told him he brought us cold focaccia which was hard too. We watched him go to the kitchen and say something to several ppl. We didn't get good vibes. Stella has potential to be a very good dining experience, but fell short of its potential during my visit. The shortcoming started with our reservation being pushed back about 40 minutes, resulting in being seated close to 9 PM. The restaurant was obviously either over booked or running behind in service, and a phone call notification would have been nice. We felt rushed during the dining experience because of the late seating, which is never a good thing. The menu was fun and interesting. We ordered a number of items and regret they were out of the Octopus. The only dishes I found to be a bit underwhelming were the Gnocchi and the Cauliflower. The Eggplant, Squash, and Bone Marrow were all very good. The plating for all dishes was really nice and the food itself looked great! For the price and type of dining experience Stella aims to offer I think there needs to be some tightening up with the service and menu. We heard from another party that the hotel is under new management and we noticed the head chef is relatively new so perhaps they are still working things out. All-in-all I would give Stella another try with hopes of a more positive outcome. read more

Dined here on a Saturday night. Stella was a little light on staff, but an able waitress /host took on what looked to be a Herculean task of serving the indoor and outdoor dining area. The open kitchen will leave you opining over how to order -there's something great about watching the knives fly and the skillets sizzle with a wonder which will be your plates. Menu seems locally sourced and to vary often, yet the ragu was a standout the night dined. I recently reserved Stella for my spouse and young child, and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. Despite having a reservation and arriving on time, I was made to wait. Meanwhile, an older white couple who arrived after me was seated promptly, which felt like a clear instance of discriminatory behavior. When I asked is there a problem the manager claimed that "you were late by few mins and my server was busy". Even after seeing us upset about this the manager did not even apologize once. The lack of respect and professionalism was disappointing and upsetting. They take 25$ reservation fee per person and they don't value the time of their customers. It's 2024, and witnessing such blatant racism in a place that's supposed to be welcoming to everyone is unacceptable. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and addresses their discriminatory practices. Until then, I cannot recommend this place to anyone who values equality and fair treatment. read more

This is laudable- what is laughable is that they fly in branzino "overnight" from Italy. Seriously- what is the carbon footprint of these 5oz fillets? Surely the restaurant can source some mountain trout and prepare it similarly? That said, that Branzino was delicious. White garlic cream sauce gives the dish its impact The roasted cauliflower was excellent and surprisingly filling. Farm fresh feature was basically a bowl of corn. Stayed at the adorable Gravity Haus after a day of golf and cancelled our reservations in downtown Truckee when we heard about Stella's and read the menu. For dinner we ordered the Ahi Poke appetizer, the beet and burrata salad and for entrees got the scallops and filet mignon. I had to send my very rare filet back as I had ordered it med rare. It came back perfect, was delicious. All our dishes were very flavorful and well thought out. Between the fabulous meal and the great experience at Gravity Haus, I plan on returning to both soon. read more

We had a great meal at Stella. The food is elevated and yet the ambience is casual enough for kids. It's also very close to downtown Truckee so very convenient. We ordered the hamachi crudo (staff favorite) which was an excellent starter (with mushrooms, avocado and some additional elements i can't remember - the fish was a tiny bit fishy but the flavor and preparation made up for it), the little gems salad with sundried tomatoes and croutons, the eggplant dip with focaccia, and the sea bass entree. It was all really delicious, and just the right amount for two of us. The kids ate off the kids menu - the fish of the day (grouper) with fingerling potatoes and broccolini, and the pasta with pecorino and added chicken (an entire sous vide chicken breast!). Both were successful options. The ambience is open and bright with the big windows, but not as cozy and romantic if that's what you're looking for. Also it did take nearly two hours for our meal as the restaurant seemed a bit short staffed. We can't complain though since they were willing to move us up to a 6 pm. read more
