They are definitely filling a need for last second items needed for food while camping, so I'm very grateful for their availability and variety. Parking was plenty. There's a Panda Express nearby. I didn't have the bottleneck checkout experience that others had (weeknight shopping) but l did notice (too late) that my checker packed my 5lbs of produce on TOP of my squishy bread which has now been, well, squished. :-( read more

Wonderful management and employees. I did a liquor promo here and they were so accommodating and kind! They have an amazing liquor, wine and cheese selection, as well as hot fresh prepped foods, salads, etc. Delicious hot soups! Everything was ok until check out. It was busy and crowded but I can get passed that, what I could not get passed was how incredibly rude the cashier Gina was. She was super friendly to the customer ahead of us. Asked her if she needed a bags and what not and wished her a great day. Then we were next, she did not say a word to us and didn't even acknowledge our presence. Still I didnt think much of it. I asked her if we could get bags since we forgot ours, with out saying anything she just pulled out bags. I went ahead and asked her how to get a membership card, she again didnt say anything to me, pulled out a card, scanned it and handed it to me. I began to feel really upset because she was being rude for no good reason. As I was processing my payment she looked to the couple after us and was the complete opposite with them and their 2 kids. She smiled and was having a conversation about how her kids we well behaved. Again she was nice to the person that had been ahead of us and now is being nice to the customers after, but was being rude to us. I paid, she gave me my receipt and that was that. I truly feel she was being racist because the other customers were all white and we weren't. She was nice to them and not to us. We are citizens of this country and simply because we didnt look white she mistreated us. read more

I've had it with this store. What a cluster! This store is so busy, they (meaning the store management and employees) could care less about you or if their service is terrible. And it is!!! On 6-22-17 it took us 20 minutes to get checked out. With 1 gentleman and his 2 daughters in front of us. He had maybe 20 items. The checker was so "green" he was looking up celery, in his little produce book, under "S". He was not only "green" he was very foreign. I don't even want to talk about when he got to the "vatermelons"! I reached out to the checker next to him, to help us get out of there, he turns around in a very foreign accent it's my first day...! OMG... really??? Finally some management staff come downstairs. (I thought OK, were going to speed this up). NO, INSTEAD THEY STAND AT THE END OF THE CHECK STAND NEXT TO US AND CHAT. 3 FEMALES, 1 MANAGER AND 2 MANAGEMENT STAFF. I went over after 5 min or so and asked them nicely, "could you please help us with the circus"! They started with a typical hollow sorry and tried to instantly defend themselves, and the guy being checked out jumped in and said how ridiculous this all was. On 6-24-17 I went back ( I know... I know.) 20 minutes to get 2 pounds of deli meat. During which time I saw one clerk that was actually doing her job, but she was so frustrated with her "green" co-worker she left for a while. (saying to him in a VERY LOUD VOICE make sure to turn off your slicer!) Then a checker comes running up, "can I get a tag for this meat"... The foreign guy didn't have a clue. THEN THE DELI MANAGER COMES OUT AND TRIES TO DEFEND THE ACTIONS BEHIND THE COUNTER. That didn't go over very well with me. I told her to DO BETTER. This store has fantastic local items, great sales, and a selection of foods in every department. The staff is friendly and professional. What I really did not like about the store is that there is a huge line every time I go in to the store. I went in two times this week and both times the wait was very long. Every time that I go into the store there is only two cashiers working but a mob of customers waiting. I would continue to shop here, because everyone is so friendly and the produce looks so great... But the lines are so long that I would only go in if I had plenty of time to spare. read more

Went to Safeway to get a weeks worth vacation groceries. Three young women of color. Went to an empty self checkout where other customers checked out without supervision. As soon as we came over to checkout, a female employee hustled over and interrupted our checkout process. She tried to correct us on our scanning methods thinking we were stealing. We simply missed the first attempt to scan the barcode. As we continue to buy our full cart of groceries, she stands directly next to us and monitors our whole checkout. No other customers in the self checkout area were even glanced at. As we finish our transactions we made sure to hold our receipt in hand as we exit the store. The employee led us out, turning around occasionally to watch our exit. Will not return. 0 STARS! read more

I shop at Safeway in the Bay Area fairly frequently. This one is huge and more modern than most others I've been too. But none of that makes up for the RUDE, DISMISSIVE, and UNPROFESSIONAL DELI SERVICE. They clearly "selected" who they wanted to serve, who I assume were mostly locals since they were pretty chatty with them. If you don't want visitors/tourists in your store, be up front and say so! I went there to shop on a Friday afternoon, about 3pm, for our one week stay in Truckee. My first stop was the deli for a pound of turkey. Few people gathered around, no number ticket system, two girls behind the counter. I waited till the folks before me finished, and then when it was to be my turn, the one free girl walked away to the other end of the counter! Didn't even acknowledge me! I left, came back two more times, waited and again got ignored and passed over. First time was about 7 minutes, the two times after about 3-4 minutes each. The only saving graces here were the delightfully kind bakery ladies, and the check out lady. I'll go back if I have to, but will avoid the deli like the plague! read more

We like the selection at Safeway and find that the employees there very nice. I wouldn't have anything to say about this location had it not been for the horrible deli sandwiches that we purchased the other week. My pesto sandwich was the greasiest thing I had ever tried to eat. Oil was dripping off of it and my sandwich wrapper was soaked. My husband ordered a panini - except what they give him was a sandwich "heated" in an oven that left panini-like marks. Shame on you Safeway corporate for advertising panini sandwiches but not providing a panini press! We'll never order another sandwich from this deli again. read more

This Safeway is nothing out of the ordinary but I;m sure a lifesaver for locals and a the perfect place to stop if you have a kitchen in your condo or hotel room. Love this safeway, nice, friendly, and very helpful people. The employees always impress me with their patience and positive attitudes. People in line are complaining, yet the checker exhibits a cheerful demeanor and keeps the line moving so we can leave with our groceries. Store manager Eric Lundstrom keeps an eye on what is going with all the check stands in order to keep the lines moving quickly. During the busy Christmas and New Years rush, he helped a woman in front to quickly fix a problem with her wine so everyone else could check out. The produce and butcher workers are out their on the floor looking to help you without having to ask for help. One of the stockers was stocking big bottles of water and he was able to do that without blocking the aisle. Keep up the good work. read more

Crazy busy grocery store in the middle of Truckee. They had a decent selection but it is so busy it's difficult to maneuver around the store. You are always in someones way or someone is always in your way. Tight busy parking lot too. But that seems to be the norm around here. read more

Here's some tips for making your trip to the infamous Truckee Safeway a better one: 1) Avoid going around lunchtime, weekends, and anytime between 3-7PM (the reasons being that schools get out, ski areas close, people get off work, etc) 2) Note that it is open 24-hours, so you can go shopping at the butt-crack of dawn should it please you. 3) Don't stop or wait in front of the store with your emergency flashers on; this is creating more problems than it solves. 4) Please look both ways before charging across the parking lot for the front door. This is not the Bay Area where you become invincible whenever you set foot on asphalt. 5) In the winter, do not buy all the milk you can for fear of getting snowed in. Know why? Because you will never, ever get snowed in for week. Should it ever happen, I will personally buy you an extra gallon of milk. Seriously. 6) Do not go into the store with ski boots on. You will slip and you will die... or at least your pride will. 7) Realize that there is a time and place to dress up in your Cole Han boots, designer snow jacket, and bedazzled denim jeans. Also realize this is not one of those places. 8) For those of you simply looking for something to do in the winter, watch all the cars try to haphazardly maneuver across the ice skating rink that was once Safeway's parking lot. I hate to have to write this review and comment because who thinks to write about Safeway?! You expect a grocery store should be where you don't have to think twice about service and not have to worry about someone being so rude to you. You should be in and out with no expectations. Unfortunately, today the Safeway in Truckee blew me away! The Safeway itself was very nice and so well organized to say the least. Once we waited in line and got to the cashier named Sandra, btw, her personality hit a 360 from how she treated the people in front of us. She seemed so annoyed that she asked my boyfriend his date of birth for a bottle of wine that he was getting amongst other things. I tried to her help out and started bagging our groceries, but this is the part I was so upset about. She was slamming and pushing items out of her way after scanning them while I was trying to bag as fast as I could so she wouldn't smash anything. She was literally pushing so many of our items out the way aggressively, I had a hard time keeping track of everything. Once we got home I realized because of her actions that we left some of our produce there with her. I have never met a cashier so angry ever! Was she upset that it was busy and there were so many people there on Saturday ? Or was she ready to go home at 4pm? I'm blown away by this experience!!! read more

This Safeway store SUCKS!. About 1:00 PM today they provided their usual service. 15 minutes in line to check out!! Three of the 8 check out stands were in operation. I spoke briefly to the manager.....She apparently DID NOT have time to listen. But she did blame the poor service on "upper management" at headquarters. The Truckee store is the highest grossing Safeway in America. It appears that they have let that go to there heads and allowed poor service to creep in. I fully understand long lines on Friday evening when the weekenders arrive....but on a Tuesday mid-day.....especially when there were available check stands to open. And OBTW, this is NOT a one time occurrence.....it happens often! read more

This is a very busy store. Many of the holiday sale items were gone. The staff was interesting. The bagger was seriously hyper and enjoying his banter with the checker. The only issue was they were unprofessional and unable to assist us in a professional manner. We received wrong change, and poor bagging service. A nice enough supermarket with a decent selection, but we almost left because the lines were so slow. Visited twice during an off-peak weekend and both times the lines were long. The first time wasn't terrible, but the second time the line for the express register was well into the aisle. The regular lines were even longer. There were several closed registers and no apparent attempt to open more during nearly 1/2 hour waiting. read more

Your average Safeway with a selection of normal and organic foods. Has the tendency to get really crowded and usually results in a long wait to check out. However, the experience is always made better when we have friendly employees working the registers. We shop Safeway Truckee all the time. This store misses on many fronts. They are frequently out of stock on many items. They frequently don't have enough staff to get you in and out conveniently, and it's terrible on holiday weekends. Their brand selection compared to other Safeway's is limited. They do have a decent wine selection with good pricing if you buy 6. The staff works hard and is friendly but you can see the burnout sometimes. It is one of the busiest stores in Northern California. The store is so small and the aisles so narrow you often wait several minutes to get through to the other side. They crowd the aisles with product displays making navigation in the store even more difficult. Management and Safeway corporate really need to work on the customer experience in this store. Frankly, I can't wait until the Raley's opens up out by the airport. It is sad that I am willing to drive farther away and probably pay a little more for a better customer experience. read more

I've lived in the town my entire life and have always shopped here. It was my fiancées 30th birthday and I needed balloons for the big party. Crystal stepped up to the plate and gratefully volunteered to fulfill the request. As soon as she told GINA, the "manager", started yelled at crystal for wanting to helping a very loyal , long time, customer. Not only in front of me but also in front of other customers. "ughhh go just GO" crystal asked "are you sure?" GINA goes "GO , JUDT GO DO IT!" VERY VERY unprofessional and just plain rude. Then as crystal is helping me a customer lets her (crystal) know there is a spill in floral. Crystal accidentally called the wrong name over the intercom for clean up. She realized it while she was still on the intercom and corrects her mistake. GINA proceed to SCREAM at crystal from the register to the floral department. Accidents happen. No need for GINA to act the way she did. Children scream not adults. I am giving them four stars as Crystal did above and beyond by helping me for a very important day in our lives. Not only this but I have bottom to know many of the Safeway employees over the years and all of them have been wonderful. I just wanted to mention again that Lucky or Raley's, you really need to get yourselves in here and set up a competing grocery store! This one cannot handle the volume of business it receives. On my latest visit, an argument broke out between a woman claiming to be a local and a bunch of tourists to the area on the proper line up and etiquette for the self check out. It was a crazy but, I see something ridiculous occur between patrons every time I go there! I cannot understand why a competitor hasn't set up shop nearby yet! I've been coming to this store for 26 years, mainly because they had the best selection of goods and their produce quality is pretty good. The problem is with some of the people they've hired lately. I feel like I'm surrounded by the types of people you saw at the Jan. 6 insurrection in D.C. I'm sure it has everything to do with the large woman manager. The worst one is the cart guy with his long hillbilly beard and menacing looks. Unmasked, of course. I could go into detail about many others, but I'll spare you. The final straw for me happened Friday, and it was pretty unnerving. A man and woman in their thirties, unmasked, wearing camouflage and from what I could see, not actually shopping, but following people around the store, getting close to them and intentionally breathing in their faces. They did to me three times and then moved on to another person. They had no cart and just looked like they were up to no good. I wanted to complain but for all I know, the manager is in cahoots with them, so I joined Yelp so I could post this to warn others. The guy has a very tanned face, slim, bushy mustache and toothless. The woman has straight dark hair and 5'6" and no make up. She will start up a fake conversation with the guy as they hover near someone and breathe in their direction. This Safeway is OFTEN packed with long lines. Usually the lines move quickly but it can be tough to navigate the store when the lines are snaking up the aisles. I honestly try to do most of my grocery shopping before I get into town so I only have to come here for a few items. read more
