Really nice location when you are in the Donner area. Everything is always stocked up. We also really like the bakery selection. Macaroon cookies are really good as their cheese danishes are the best, they don't have them at our local store. The only issue I have is that they always have long lines. Seems like not enough cashiers and if you are in a hurry, this is not the place to run in and out. For a busy location such as this one, they should have every register open. read more

This Safeway is OFTEN packed with long lines. Usually the lines move quickly but it can be tough to navigate the store when the lines are snaking up the aisles. I honestly try to do most of my grocery shopping before I get into town so I only have to come here for a few items. read more

Stay away between 10am and 7pm. Like all Safeways, this one is equally poorly managed and understaffed. Max 3 lanes open and people lining up in the isles during normal days. Prepare to be greeted by disaffected staff that could care less if you bag you own groceries. On that note - expect to bag your own groceries. Love how they add to the experience by restocking shelves in the middle of the day by third party vendors. Obviously a chain under commercial pressure especially with Amazon stepping into the game. Time for Truckee to get a Trader Joes and/or Whole Foods. There certainly is no lack of clientel that would drop Safeway in a heartbeat. read more

OM-G's . This is the busiest grocery store I've ever been in my entire life. 10 carts deep in what must have been 10 rows of fully staffed cashier lines at any time of the day. That being said, they are incredibly efficiently and abundantly well stocked- Yes, Safeway--borderline whole foods, sprouts, ralphs, albertsons all in one. Their cashiers are also above it all, its just part of their job and they aren't complaining, great attitude in chaos- this is hard to find surely. Best case scenario for such a mad scene. If you don't get here before 11am forget it. Waited over 20 minutes to be served in deli sandwich line. Then they couldn't check me out so I had to wait in another line for self checkout. Went here to grab a few things for camping. It was so hard to find things. My son wanted sunflower seeds...looked on the isle labeled nuts...no.... We asked and they were actually at the back of the ICE CREAM isle....why didn't I think of that???? Very hectic store. read more

It's in a location that sees a lot of traffic so it can be quite busy and hectic depending when you are here. It's best to go in here knowing what you want/need to avoid the wandering and figuring it out, which I see a lot. They always have what I need when I need to stock up on food and drinks when I rent a cabin. I usually bring the non-perishables when I go up and am here to shop for the perishables or things I may have forgotten or couldn't fit in the care when I'm here. read more

So thankful for your amazing employees! I was caught in an unexpected snow storm last night in Truckee and had to put chains on my car as I am not from that area. I was out in Truckee Safeway parking lot attempting to do this but needless to say I was cold and frustrated and the storm seemed to be escalating and I was getting nowhere quickly with the chains. I do a lot of traveling between nevada and california. I stopped here to grab a little grocerys. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. The cashier was .... horrible. Stupid to be completely honest. The deli has the worst service ever. A newer girl, Aubrey, is making sandwiches. It is taking about 13 minutes for each sandwich. Meanwhile the other side of the deli has 4 workers and another woman sweeping behind both counters. The sandwich maker disappeared for 2 minutes to get someone to open a jar of artichokes for her...so frustrating. Then she had to ask repeatedly what I wanted on the sandwich when I advised her from the start. Then she had to ask if she angered me. Please just make my sandwich. read more

I hope people also realize that this is the busiest Safeway in California. Just a heads up when coming to shop here. Expect the LONG lines and hurried employees. It's a tourist town and that's just the way it is. For a shorter wait, try Save Mart just right down the road. Or, if you have time, jump on the freeway and head down to Reno (like most locals do) and get some good shopping done at Costco or Whole Foods. read more

Well we just bought some cod there from the fresh fish section and got home to find out there were full of parasitic worms. Went back and talked to the store manager who never apologized and we basically had to beg to get reimbursed. For a serious health violation, that guy seemed quite annoyed that we would impede on his precious time. What a pain! read more

In my two years of living here I have shopped here often, though you have to learn when it's least crowded usually I have a decent shopping experience. I am writing this review, however, because of the very poor customer service I received today at the bakery section. I stood there for 10 minutes while the female associate cleaned the windows to the display, when she finally finished her task she asked if I needed something. My daughters birthday is tomorrow and her only request was a cake that has a dog with sunglasses, a simple request. However when I began to tell the associate this she rudely cut me off, scrunched her nose, and said "no no no, a dog with sunglasses we can not do". Thinking there may be a communication issue as she was Hispanic I smiled and tried to explain again but she continued to talk over me saying no. I've worked in sales management and customer service my whole life and this is one way to lose a customer. I went directly to the only other grocery store in town and without even mentioning the experience I had at safeway they gladly said they would make the cake and even gave suggestions on how they can make it. Safeway, please hire people who actually want to help people instead of turning them away to your competitors. read more

I was at the Safeway in Truckee and it is really not a very well run store. I was in an aisle and one of the managers was on his cell phone, a personal call, I could hear him talking loudly to his wife. This guy pushed passed me by bumping into me and did not even say excuse me. This guy is as big as a house, looks like the definition of sloth. We hired Safeway bakery to bake our cake for our wedding in Truckee. It was delicious. And so much more affordable than any other bakery in town. Isabel who works in the bakery was so helpful. We did a tasting and there were three cakes to choose from which were all delicious. Lots of choices in terms of sizes and designs. We ended up getting the marble sheet cake with raspberry filling and also a two tiered small cake for the cutting with carrot cake on the top and red velvet on the bottom. The carrot cake was my favorite but they were all delicious. And you cannot beat the price, especially when compared to the other options in Truckee. The main difference between other bakeries is that we had to pick up the cake. I delegated that task to one of my friends and it was smooth. Would recommend the bakery for any wedding! read more

Safeway in Truckee is always too busy/ crowded. They have no natural foods except for Safeway O and although it appears that many micro brews are on sale in the beer isle- they are often a dollar higher than at Save Mart to begin with. Also, the paper bags (which they reluctantly provide) have no handles! I try to avoid this Safeway at all costs, and much prefer the selection at Save Mart, and New Moon- where the friendly staff is helpful and organic yogurt and vegetables are plenty. read more

Stopped shopping here a year ago because I got sick of spending over $600 per visit and having to pack my own bags with kids at tow. Today I tried it once again to see if anything had changed. Had a extremely packed cart with people behind me. Asked the checker to call for a bagger and she said they were all busy stocking isles. When she could no longer scan any items because it was too full back there we were at a standstill. I still had a full cart to unload and the checker refused to bag. So we stood there for a good 10min until she called for an emergency bagger to come bag. When a manager had to come she was huffing and puffing that she had to bag. Check out took over 30min. It was crazy frustrating. I spent over $800 dollars and all I received was attitude and dirty looks. Your welcome Safeway! I will continue to shop at Save-mart until our new Rally's is built. Alright let me start off by saying I understand how busy Safeway gets on weekends and especially during the summer months. But this most recent trip here was the longest I've ever sat in line given that there were not very many people in there. I had a total of 7 items and there were three customers ahead of me in line. As I waited I noticed that the other lanes with far more customers were moving faster than the lane I was in. The reason for the wait was the checker averaged one scanned item for every three seconds. No joke. He would just stare at the screen after he scanned something or would missed items, total the order and have to start over and rescan everything. I wanted to pull my hair out. I don't even work here nor have I ever and I swear I could work faster and more efficiently than this man. When I go back I will make sure not to get in Johnnys line. Management please have Johnny work elsewhere in the store, like in the back stocking or collecting carts in the parking lot, not with customers. read more

Stocked in priced like your typical Saeway. But, Safeway takes advantage of this location--one of its busiest, and local management seems somewhere between erratic and hardly present. The typical problem w/this location is they very predictably get overrun every holiday. But, local management should be attuned to that, add more staff, and especially stock extra of the predictably high demand products. Safeway has extensive tracking for this kind of stuff, so not rocket science. I put that pretty squarely on local management, and corp. needs to focus on that more. IF they have it in stock, they have a reasonable selection of product and have tried to keep things updated as market trends have evolved. Somewhat more selection it seems than their nearby competitor Raley's. But if I go somewhere on a busy weekend and really need it, Raley's is way more dependable stock wise and much less likely to be badly overrun with crowds than Safeway is. read more
