I have serious issues with this Safeway. In the past month, I've brought home expired perishables - on the shelf in the store, but out of date. I've also brought home produce that ended up slimy and spoiled within a day or so. I bought a bouquet of "guaranteed fresh" roses which wilted and shed petals within 24 hours. The baggers have damaged my purchases putting bread and eggs at the bottom of the bag, putting an unsecured open container of $12 sushi sideways and spilling all over. I'm going to make an effort to stop shopping here entirely. When does Whole Foods Sunnyvale open?? read more

This place used to be better 25 years ago. They run out of paper bags. I've got molded cake, bad crab. And they appear to be racist, towards afro-americans I've seen the treatment towards others in the store. I find this to be quite appalling in this day and age of time. Especially if you are spending good money. Management needs to be improved and advise on what is happening in their store. Do yourself a favor and Shop where you are appreciated. Inattentive (and sometimes hostile) service, sickly atmosphere that feels like failure incarnate and sub-zero morale. It's only gotten worse in the eight years we've been in the babe. Long lines? I stopped because it is near work. I usually go to the one closer to home but thought I would try this one as it has a bigger produce section. 1st issue- brown substance smeared down an aisle. Told a cashier, he called someone, no one came for a while then when someone did come they just put a and basket turned upside down over the top of it. 2nd issue was 1 cashier open with a long line at a busy time (I assume they know people are going to shop after work at 5pm). Cashier wasn't very nice but hey I don't want to chit chat with 100 people a day either so no biggie. Watching my items ring up and noticed a couple issues so I said "Hey can you do me a favor and check on these 2 items". He rudely told me I was wrong and proceeded to show the discount on a similar item but not the one I was talking about. I finally got my point across and the 2 items were fixed but not before a lot of back and forth and shitty attitude from him. I COULD have just let him ring it up wrong then went to customer service and made them enforce the free item and $5 gift card policy... I guess I won't be going to this location anymore. Love this Safeway! It has all the GREAT and amazing things that an American grocery outlet should have, including the parking lot, traffic, etc. Like all Safeways, prices will range here depending on when you go and whether you have a rewards card. And so I won't belabor that part of the review and just say that the prices are decent for American products. The store is decently navigable from the moment you walk into the store. There's some weird corners here and there, but the signs are very accurate and so you won't take too long looking for stuff. What I really love about the place however is what extends beyond the store. They picked a great parking lot. There's so many entrances and exits into the lot. Compared to the other one that's ALSO on El Camino Real, it's so easy to park and get in and out. Love it! Overall, this is my go to Safeway now! Shop well and prosper, read more

Never enough checkers. No matter what time of day or night. We've lived in our Sunnyvale home for almost 20 years and we never had such horrible service for the past year. The employees are awesome. This is a manager and company issue. Will now take the time to go to Nob Hill.... Longer drive but last week in the store and they are always fully stocked beautifully every day of the week. Sad. Possibly the worst customer experience ever for a grocery store. Employees are rude and just straight refuse to help out. I just moved to Sunnyvale, two blocks from this store, and now travel an extra 10 minutes to buy my groceries somewhere else since the employees are so awful at this location. It's a grocery store so I don't expect much help but where you need someone, deli, customer service or check stands, good luck cause they either ignore you or can't help you at all. The last draw was an employee in the evening blocking my way in the store at the side door, refusing to let me in even tho they were open and ignored me when asking if they closed early and why I couldn't get in. He did it in such a manner I could tell he had no regard for customer service. The staff is RUDE. I came in past midnight for some vegetables and there is only one counter open, but the cashier is not there. I patiently wait for five minutes before going to search for the cashier. Turns out he's chatting it up with his co workers, the slacker. I give him another 30 seconds before interrupting. I politely tell him I'm ready to check out. He grunts "ergh over there" and signals with his arm to go to the counter. His co workers laugh and I hear one of them say "haha that was great customer service." I proceed to wait at the counter for another couple minutes before this guy decides to show up. He aggressively scans and shoves my items to the bagging area without a single word. He does the same for an older gentleman behind me. The staff in this place, the past-midnight cashier in particular have no place working in any position that involves customer service. I will not be visiting this place again. read more

Honestly, as a young black man I know people look at me and make judgments, but the experience I had at this Safeway location made me extremely uncomfortable and has prompted me to make the decision to visit this location anymore. I usually use the self-checkout kiosks on a regular basis as this is the fastest way to get in and out, during this particular early morning visit I was followed through out the store while shopping by a large Hispanic woman, adding insult to injury, as I proceeded to one of the self-checkout kiosks she promptly yells at another employee while standing behind me, "Daniella make sure you watch self-checkout." I have never been more uncomfortable or embarrassed in my entire life as there were other shoppers, not of color, who weren't being followed or made to feel uncomfortable. I would visit this location regularly as it is very close to my home, but unfortunately I will not be returning to this location. Horrible job Safeway. NOT EVERYONE IS A THIEF. read more

Just want to warn anyone who attempts to order a Safeway Order Ahead holiday meal. Today, three days before Christmas we receive a call from the store advising the Holiday meal order that we had placed on December 9th is now sold out, and there are no other options. The person on the phone was extremely rude, and would not help us out at all. I clearly do not understand on when a order is placed plenty ahead and now three days before Christmas we are notified of their mess up. I do not recommend the Safeway Order Ahead Holiday Meal, Safeway cannot be trusted in fulfilling your order. If I could give zero Stars for this Safeway Store, I would. The clerk in the Deli section need to know to wait on customers and not just fellow employees. I was getting a sandwich and waiting behind a Safeway employee who was paying for his lunch. After waiting for them to finish their lengthily conversation, I put my sandwich on the counter to pay, at which time the clerk abruptly closed the check out and proceeded to the back room, turning to tell me I would have to pay upfront. I visited the store today in an attempt to purchase some birthday balloons and a birthday card for my god daughter. There was no one at the balloon station at the time so, my friend and I, went to ask if we could get assistance. Originally, I asked a older guy at the register if we could get help, but he directed me over to a girl that was working at the self check out. I did not see her name, but the guy at the register said her name was Celina. My friend then walked over to ask Celina for help and she said she would be right over to help us out. I left to go to the restroom and let my friend know what balloons to order. It was 10 minutes after I returned and I saw my friend was still standing waiting for help. Therefore, I walked over to Celina and asked her if I was going to get the help or not because, we had already waited a long time for the help. She looked at me and didn't say one word, but another lady working the register told me no one knew how to work that station and that it had been closed since 6pm. Frustrated, I walked over to my friend and told her they were not going to help us out since the beginning so, we left the store. My friend proceeded to tell me she had asked Celina for help, again, and my friend was told that she had sent someone to help us out and would be there shortly. It's just so rude for someone, that clearly knew they weren't going to help us, to stand there and tell us they would help when they couldn't. I don't know if Celina had a bad day or what the issue was, but her body language and attitude was very unprofessional. I've been working customer service for 5+ years and everyone should know that you always act professionally and keep a great demeanor regardless of the situation at hand. Overall, I had one of the worst experiences at this Safeway. I feel all the walking back and forth and frustration could have been avoided if this was handled in a professional manner. read more

I put in a pick up order and it was never filled and my card was charged. I was left hanging for hours after getting a text that said " apologies, your pickup order is running behind schedule but we'll notify you as soon as it's ready" Two hours later it still was not filled and was getting close to the cut off time for pick orders. I had to get a refund, which meant calling customer service. I will never use Safeway online ordering every again. The online support was very helpful and refunded my order. read more

This place has progressively gotten worse by the year. Long lines, inefficient managers and throw in there some checkers who obviously need training. Went in yesterday and this totally inefficient checker spent (no kidding) over 25 minutes with one customer. They kept going back and forth. My items were already placed on the counter so another checker came and took everyone behind me. I left the store without my items. . They never have more than two checkers on board. To say the manager is inefficient would be an understatement. I have been going to this store since it opened and I will never, ever return. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, PLEASE DO YOURSELF AND YOUR GROCERIES A HUGE FAVOR AND GO TO ANY OTHER SAFEWAY LOCATION! After today's nightmare of an experience, I will gladly drive further down the street to go to the next Safeway location. After all, there are multiple Safeway locations on El Camino Real. About my experience: I live in the area, so my family and I shop at Safeway often for most of our grocery needs. Today was by far the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I have received, not only from Safeway, but from any grocery store in general. Today, it was CHERYL ringing up customers, and LORENA bagging. Cheryl and Lorena are THE WORST EMPLOYEES EVER! My husband and I had no choice but to choose their checkout lane because the only other lane open was the express lane, and we had way more than 15 items. First of all, neither Cheryl NOR Lorena greeted me nor my husband when it was our turn, because they were way too busy chit chatting with each other about irrelevant stuff, most definitely not related to their jobs! Cheryl rang up my items, and then literally threw them onto the counter; I bought some pasta sauces that were in glass bottles and she tossed them onto the counter. I had to check each bottle after she rang them up to make sure none of them were cracked/chipped or damaged because of her rough-handling. I looked up at Cheryl and even asked her "why are you being so rough? Can you not?". Cheryl did NOT even acknowledge me and continued doing so; honestly, I don't even think she heard me because she continued talking with Lorena. Lorena was just standing there chatting with Cheryl; she didn't even bother to ask if we needed a bag. She literally has one job, and she failed at it today so miserably. I looked up at her once Cheryl starting ringing things up, and told her "we'll take as many bags necessary". Usually, from my experience at other Safeway stores, they ask you which type of bag you prefer, paper or plastic. Nope, not Lorena. God forbid I interrupt her "story" that she was telling Cheryl. Lorena was SO SLOW, she couldn't have cared less. Cheryl was practically done ringing up the guy BEHIND us, so my husband and I jumped in to bag our own items. I even had to push the button to move the items down; because Lorena was too busy sucking at her job. My husband and I were also in a rush, and the line wasn't even too bad when we were ready to get checked out (only one guy in front of us). It should NOT have taken that long to get checked out. I know I could have just used the self check-out lane, but forget it. I will not be returning to this location. NOT WORTH IT! What customer wants their groceries literally thrown down? The store itself isn't terrible. There is a decent selection of wine and I have never had an issue with not being able to find something I needed. While the selection is good, the prices are pretty high here. My top complaint is that there are NEVER enough cashiers open and people are often lined up into the aisles. However, once you do make it to a cashier, the ladies are super nice. read more

During the COVID-19 crisis, thus store will not allow reusable bags, yet it continues to be "out of bags". Walmart has bags, and has bags since the beginning of the ban on reusable bags. So combining the high prices of Safeway with poor customer service means Safeway again compares unfavorably to Walmart's overall grocery shopping experience. read more

I would give this place negative stars. LOL such a joke. I literally spend HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS HERE because I have a family of 8 (1 disabled brother and 2 older parents plus my own fam) and this place is located close to my neighborhood. SITUATION: I was shopping after my trip to the gym. In the meat section picking out chicken I notice an elderly gentlemen waving his arms trying to get the attention of the meat people behind the counter. FOR FIVE MINUTES The ALL ignore him. Ahwhile later I am pushing my cart to get to the coffee aisle (across the way) and roll through the situation he was trying to gain their attention for; multiple bottles of broken glass and salad dressing. WTF. Trying to get glass out of my converse (no socks, gross I know lol) and shopping cart wheels this worker who was a middle age woman with a red apron from the meat section aggressively yells at me that "YOU ARE SPREADING IT EVERYWHERE" WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU" I am stunned to be spoken to in that way since again I spend like a thousand dollars here every month and the elderly man had CLEARLY tried to get them to come clean it or just acknowledge him but they wait until somebody runs into it to make a scene. The sweet older man tells her its not my fault and she turns her back and yells to who ever is behind the counter that "PEOPLE ARE DUMB AND GOING THROUGH AND SPREADING IT EVERYWHERE" I'm like okay. Never coming back here ever. My brother is a buyer at whole foods and when I go there I get treated like a valuable human being. You will be too, don't put yourself through this. November 19, 2016 Came here earlier this evening to buy a few groceries. I was on my way out until I saw Starbucks (the one inside this Safeway branch) carrying the annual Starbucks Bearistas. I took a few photos of the Bearistas on display, with my camera, and was about to buy one or both of the two kinds of bears, until I was stopped by this woman manning the Safeway self check-out lane, who told me that I cannot take pictures in the store. She proceeded to stand there and tell me to delete the photos. I pretended to delete the photos, but I didn't. She actually bothered to inspect my camera to verify that they were deleted, gave me some sort of disciplinary nod and walked away. Now, if she is doing her job, then fine. However, if this is Safeway's policy, as a customer who frequently shops at Whole Foods Market instead, this is not going to do anything to promote my fading business with your establishment. Nowadays, nearly all people have cameras on their phones, and if someone chooses to take a picture, it could also be because he or she would like to promote your merchandise to someone else not currently present at the moment, shopping with him/her. I wanted to take photos to show to my sister (who is not in the U.S.) to see if she wanted some for her collection too, so I could buy them for her. I was just astonished to see them here since the U.S. "Starbuckses" have never (to my knowledge) carried these Bearistas. The Asian "Starbuckses" have carried them since 1997, and I personally have a collection of some of them. The Bearistas are more popular in Asia, but I think they may be trying to introduce them to the U.S. market now. Anyway, this review was mainly for that woman at the Safeway self check-out area, who had a shift during the time frame of 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM. She actually walked over to me at the Starbucks stall to direct me to delete the pictures and inspect my camera. The lady at the Starbucks stall didn't even care that I took the photos. I was completely off-put at how this Safeway employee had this power tripping demeanor towards a customer. I never even saw signs which said not to take pictures. Whenever I get the chance to do so, I take photos of establishments in order to post on Yelp to help people see what the establishments look like. I was trying to promote business with you, elsewhere, but after this, I don't feel like visiting this location, or your other groceries, anymore. I'll stick to other establishments which do not have such a preposterous rule. read more

I don't mind this location at all. It's a short walk away from work, which is convenient. I usually come in before 10a or around lunchtime. One of the cashiers at least called on the intercom for a person to come help me, however the employee was too busy talking to her friend to assist me in getting he Money Order I needed for my students.
