This was the only grocery store open at the time I was just about done with my late evening workout. Safeway back home in Honolulu has a few stores that operate 24/7. But this one closes at 11pm. I decided to shop here while staying in a hotel in Downtown Seattle because my hotel room was equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. It's a pretty well sized store, with a good amount of inventory. A few departments that drew my attention was the bakery, deli, and household goods. I basically had a good 30 minutes to thoroughly scope out the entire store to get a feel of what they had on special, where everything was located, and how safe and secure the employees and security guard keeps customers inside late in the evening. My basket ended up with way more items than expected, it's okay because with your Safeway rewards card you will see the savings add up. I stopped shopping here regularly around 5 years ago, but end up coming in maybe a couple times a year when it's the most convenient option. The past 2 times I have shopped here though, the employee overseeing the self-checkout station made totally unsolicited derogatory comments about my purchases. It was a different person both times. The first time it happened, I was surprised but dismissed it as a one time thing. But then when it happened again the very next time I was there, and with a different employee, it felt a lot harder to ignore. If I want opinions on what I'm buying I'll ask for them, but shaming and/or humiliating any shopper, and more specifically those who are trying to use the self-checkout - people who are going out of their way to minimize their social interaction - feels particularly egregious to me. This is my neighborhood Safeway! Been consistently coming here for groceries and the deals have generally been good. This is a much smaller store than the one in Queen Anne though so if you are looking to place reliable online orders for things that are not groceries I definitely caution you. Parking was spacious, carts was nice and clean. The signage for specials were not marked well.i could not find cold cuts . I got an onion but had to walk to the front for a bag, could not find a sign for cereal . A lot of the white peaches were bruised. Finally on checking out i had ordered a couple of specials but the cashier was not willing to help me clip or give me the price for the fruits. . DO NOT BUY ANY PRODUCE FROM HERE. They very consistently will sell moldy corn, veggies, fruit. They have frequent refrigeration issues yet still sell moldy produce without shame. I've alerted staff countless times and they could not care any less. Nearly all fruit is moldy and old. All packaged corn is ingested with a white mold. This is an ongoing issue for this Safeway location for years. I have no idea how they are still open. read more

This Safeway is poorly stocked, incredibly dirty, and vagrants consistently flank the entrance. Things are truly disgusting in the garage - it smells of urine, feces, and vomit. The garage is noticeably filthy, and the interior of the store is poorly lit with similar lack of cleanliness. Got their Chinese Food and the guy packed it-shoutout to him. I liked their Korean beef and their sesame chicken was okay. Moreover, the chow mein was comparable to panda express. Not the best food for your stomach, and obviously it's not authentic chinese food (technically it's authentic chinese american food) but I still appreciate it for its affordability and bulk portions. I've shopped at Safeway my entire life. Tonight I loaded my cart full of items that my "SAFEWAY CLUB MEMBERSHIP" gives me nice discounts for. I just enter my phone number and this is all that has ever been required to qualify for the discounts. Tonight I noticed that the "BUY 2 GET 3 FREE" discount for 12 packs of soda pop wasn't working during checkout. The Safeway employee told me that unless I own a Smart Phone with the "Safeway App" that I wont get the discount. Like any other Safeway, this location has everything your daily life needs, but I'm writing this to talk specifically about the staff. The staff here is incredible and goes above and beyond. From helping me find my way around the store, to assisting with groceries that are too high up to reach (I'm a tiny person), they have always been extremely friendly and easy to speak with. On top of that, they have been extremely accommodating whenever I've done Drive Up for my order. There have been times when all the spots were taken and I had to park in the basement. Instead of making me come upstairs or wait until a spot opened up, the staff members found my car and helped me load everything up! It also helps that they have been so cheery every time that it always brightened my day. Never did I ever think I was gonna write a review for a Safeway. However, after coming to this one today, it felt necessary. While the staff are super friendly and helpful. The smell of the parking lot was horrendous. I usually have a strong stomach but my lunch almost made an appearance. The stench was so strong it definitely wafted up from the parking lot up into the store. We bought this "fresh" salmon fillet yesterday morning from this Safeway location. As you can see in the pictures provided below, the salmon is infested with tapeworm. I moved to this neighborhood in 2005 and have been coming to this Safeway on an off since then, so 16 years. Everyone giving more than 1 star is being very generous. People in the deli cannot communicate in English and do not know the names of any of their products. They'll keep asking you what you want, even if you repeat the exact name on the meat packaging 10-15 times and point directly at it through the glass. This hasn't happened once, it happens every time. They shrug their shoulders. They hope you'll walk away lol. There is no one at the customer service desk, so if that older guy with the glasses is working the deli, you just don't get to buy food. What afucking joke. Safeway tries to look like the high-end stores in Seattle, but not elsewhere. They are 15-20% more than Fred Meyer. But the Safeway experience is special. Practice your high jump getting in the store as you jump over the bodies. What a cheerful store. It's below ground with not enough lighting. If you are shopping in the periphery, you can see the latest shoe styles on the feet of the people walking by. You can't see any higher than the calves. The shopping experience is playful like with a game. You have to guess the prices on so many items. 20 types of Quinoia. 20 kinds of pink salt. 20 products from Morton. 20 varieties of tofu. 100 chedder cheeses. 30 spray cleaners for windows. But don't look for Bulgar Wheat (tabouli), or Barley, or Diamond Crystal Salt (the standard in every written recipe), or Swiss or Provolone. No Seitan or Tempeh that have 5x the protein as in Tofu. If you need to polish silver or brass or clean your stainless appliances, go to the hardware store. If you want the on sale items, better get in there early. The produce section is untouched by human hands. You may wonder about doing it yourself. Some fruit has been there for several months--they are going to carbon date them. Displays have so much empty spots you hear the echos from your feet on the floor. They object to placing prices out in the produce section. I think that's a principle from the church of the flying spaghetti monster. They truly believe that absence makes the heart go fonder. They have a deli counter, meat counter, fish counter and bakery counter. No matter whether I go during the day, evening or weekend, I have never seen anyone staffing them. That goes for Starbucks and the flower stand. They believe that aisles should be kept clean. They insure this by not having any staff in the store. There will be piles of boxes. It's like playing battleship. You've made it through. It's checkout time. There is never more than one lane open. This is so you can squeeze in a half hour nap. The cashier was just hired this morning and has to go find someone to help on every other item for the 20 people standing ahead of you in line. They do manage to be polite, but they won't last the day. The self-checkout line has people screaming at the station saying, "I DID put the item down." The interface was designed by Rube Goldberg when he was angry at the world. At any given time you need to be answering a question on the monitor or on the separate credit card authorizer or on the separate cash section down below. Coupons go in somewhere else. And then there is another place to put in your customer number and tell it how many bags you have. You are also balancing your groceries, now 7 stories tall on a tiny weight plate. It is so delicate that it errors out whenever you exhale. It looks a street busker playing 30 instruments at the same time. Clearly none of the vendors was willing to play well with the others. And while you are trying to figure out which one to pay attention to next, it talks to you even more condescendingly, and the people waiting in line are fainting from standing there for hours. It tells you it is calling the attendant. You are so gullible....you believe it. You came for 3 items, and it only took two hours. You get to practice mindfulness. As you leave, you prepare for the jump again. You will see police there every other time. It is a wonderful slice of life. Remember to take a shower when you get home. read more

It's sad and confusing to see all the poor reviews for this location. For starters, you can't completely fault a business for other customers who bother you. If seeing ungroomed shoppers or a random angry customer offends you, maybe you aren't cut out for city living? If you solely want to shop around upper class persons, then I guess choose a different grocer chain? Judgmental either way, and personally I rarely have run into customer issues, and I shop at this location a lot. Second, while the rest of the city or country was panicking over sold out toilet paper and other common items, this location has always been completely stocked since March, with the exception of Lysol spray/wipes, but that is the case for everywhere I've shopped in Seattle, even pharmacies. There is a good selection at this Safeway, every aisle is always stocked: produce, fresh meats/fish, frozen, dairy, toiletries and medicine, non-perishable items. The store is usually fairly busy during peak times (expected), so patience and understanding from customers goes a long way. Every employee I've interacted with is very friendly and helpful and some even remember me. The cashiers, produce, hot/meat section. I'm usually asked if I need any help when an employee passes me, and various occasions the staff will walk me to the items I need to find when I didn't ask, but appreciated! I know quarantine is stressful and emotions might run high when people are in public, but this location and its staff have not given me any reason not to shop here. I've shopped at a variety of grocers and locations throughout Seattle and other larger cities I've lived in, and do not notice this one as lacking compared to others. Or update your own app?). I took the bait and followed the link, re-entered the info, and upon hitting submit the site says the server is down and clears all the fields. So they just don't give a f*ck to hear what a crappy job they're doing. ______________ I live in the neighborhood and this is the closest supermarket to me. I have been consistently underwhelmed by this store. The quality and availability of the produce is severely lacking. if products are even in stock they are wilted and decaying. At times the store is understaffed so checkout times are ridiculously long. Sometimes when customers are waiting, staff will stop to chat and pet dogs and keep everyone waiting. It's been frustrating to shop here. Even the self checkout is a shitshow. The staff will not be around when your stand needs an ID check so you have to sit there and hope someone comes back soon. This is a pretty standard Safeway with the exception of it being in the city. As such, there isn't a gas station, the store feels like it has a slightly smaller footprint, and the parking is in the basement. It's nice to have indoor covered parking during chilly or rainy days. It does mean that you either have to wait for the elevator or use the cart escalator to get your groceries downstairs. The most frustrating part of that process is ensuing you have the right cart. Some evil genius decided it would be fun to put two different cart types next to the escalator. One fits on the cart escalator and one is frustratingly two inches too wide. Before starting your shopping, choose wisely. The store has a good variety of food items and the bakery-made bread is delish. Their French loaf garlic bread is crave-worthy. The products this store carries meet almost all of my needs and plays into my frequent junk food cravings. Unlike other grocery store chains, I don't think Safeway has those taste-test sales folks that cause people to block the aisles and wait five minutes for a micro bite of frozen pizza. That's probably a good thing. The checkout team has always been nice and that's an added bonus to this location. read more

One star is too high. Like other reviewers I live in the neighborhood and the location is good, but I have shopped here for the last time today, While the entire store is tired and quality is lacking, Safeway must be scraping the bottom of the barrel for employees. Customer service is non-existent here. Today, in the self check-out, I had a bottle of wine. There was a (small) line behind me. The Safeway employee was right next to me, but did not notice the flashing light needed to check ID. After a minute I said "excuse me" can you take care of this?" She said, "no, I need to refill the bags on this register." So, with multiple customers waiting we get to see this woman take three or four trips to refill the bags. (Nevermind that I had my own bag.) Also, she was extremely slow filling the bags. (This is just placing bags by the register.) This was so much on purpose. And to be absolutely clear, I did nothing to offend her. I've lived here in lower Queen Anne for four years. Safeway needs to leave. read more

The story I'm about to tell is 100 percent true. No embellishment at all. This used to be my favorite grocery store, simply because I live really close to it. I've been craving steak, so today I went there for that specific reason. I'm a social butterfly, so when I saw a homeless dude selling Real Change, I struck up a conversation. It was a pleasent conversation, until... An elderly woman burst out of the front door, followed by four young women. They tackled her and rifled through all of her pockets. They were quite violent. I used my best judgement to assess that the elderly woman wasn't in any real physical danger, otherwise I would've used my very large size and physical proweress to intervene. The old lady got away. I stuck around for quite some time to speak to police about the crime that I witnessed. It turns out that three of the women who physically assaulted this poor old lady are employees of the store. The old lady had shoplifted and the employees were getting back their lost product. Not only is it against the law for an employee to assault a shoplifter, it's just very bad optics, it can lead to possibility of lawsuit, and it's just morally wrong on so many levels. All I did was report a crime - physical assault against an elderly woman. But the store has 86'd me. Holy crap, I am SO in the right on this matter. I've been working in the service industry for a LONG TIME and I'm really good at it. Store employees tackling an elderly woman for shoplifting is so fucking stupid. I just got off the phone with their corporate office, and I'm so offended by what I saw today that I absolutely am now on a mission to get those violent pieces of sh*it fired. I don't know for sure, but I think it's a good guess that the shoplifter is a homeless person. In Seattle, there are lots of groups that advocate for homeless people. I'm not condoning the shoplifting, but a store employee ABSOLUTELY has NO RIGHT to ever put their hands on someone, unless intervening to stop an act of violence. Which, that's not what happened. And the employees almost look they enjoyed it. I spoke to the manager immediately, and not only did he not send the employees home, he reported ME to the police. Wow. The audacity. Please, do not shop here. Boycotts work. I told their corporate office that if these horrible excuses for oxygen aren't fired, I'm going to raise hell, and I plan to do that. I don't know if I just came in at a good time or what, but my weekday afternoon shopping trip at this Safeway was pretty calm and great! I decided to switch up my grocery shopping routine a bit to see if I could save a significant amount of money by stopping at Safeway first before I went to Whole Foods to get the things I can only find there. To my surprise, I actually found most of the items cost as much or a little more than Whole Foods! However, I was also pretty pleased to see some items I thought I could only find at Whole Foods were available at Safeway! With that being said, I was able to find some produce cheaper. And, of course, Safeway has some more common, big brand names and products that you can't get at Whole Foods. So I snagged enough of that stuff to ensure that my savings were non-existent. Haha. Next time around I'm going to be a little more strict about just sticking to my list, haha. I also loved that parking was free and easy! No need to get a ticket, then worry about getting it validated--just free, 1-hour parking. Nice. I was also loving how chill and NOT PACKED WITH PEOPLE it was on a weekday afternoon. Truly a great neighborhood store. The store is indeed understaffed, but the staff members who are there are always kind, friendly, and helpful. They put up with a lot of sh*t (stealing, rude customers, being understaffed) and they always try to be there for those who visit. As essential workers who are putting their life at risk every day to serve those of us who have the privilege to work from home, my most sincere thank you goes out to them. One thing worth noting is that if you visit the store after 11pm you can expect a long wait. Namely, because the self check-outs are closed and the store is especially understaffed during this time. By far, the worst Safeway in Seattle. For my job, I am always visiting all of the stores. If they could staff more than one cashier at a time, then the experience would be drastically improved. However, they only have one cashier working almost always (unless the line gets too long), and it is a very slow getting through the line. 90 percent of the time it's not a smooth experience. If I had a choice not to come to this store ever again, I definitely would pass on it every time, but unfortunately my work requires me to come here a lot more than I would prefer. This used to be our favorite Safeway -- we've been customers for 10 years. Today around 4 PM, unfortunately, it was just a dumpster fire. We had about 8-10 bags' worth of groceries.Nobody at Safeway should have a problem with this. It's not like at the smaller stores with tiny counters, where they have a breakdown if you want to buy more than four things. Mahki starts checking us out. Could have been faster, sure, because I've stopped in before I start work nearby at 5 PM, which I fully realize is opposite to the rest of the world. In a perfect world it would be great if the checkers didn't assume everyone has just gotten OFF work around 4PM and now has oodles of time to let them scan stuff like everything's dipped in molasses, but I was still a bit early for my shift so no worries. So a perky lad with a Santa Hat named Rolf is talking animatedly with the previous customer. About sports I think. After five minutes of chat he bids a regretful goodbye to his new friend, then turns around and kind of stares at our items as they roll toward him, hit the edge of the conveyor belt and start piling up. Rolf sloooooooowly begins to bag our stuff. He double-bags one of our loads without being asked, so we're thinking, Bonus! All of a sudden he walks away. Our soup cans are cannon-balling into our boxes of cake mix, which go down like dominoes. The bananas get piled on by the jars of spaghetti sauce and they just give up and die. It's a giant cluster. Husband and I look at each other, then look around to see if anyone is coming back. Rolf actually comes back and starts slowly bagging again, but gives up after filling a second sack. "I have to go," he says. I guess we didn't know enough about sports. We look brightly at Mahki, wondering if perhaps he'll start bagging our stuff himself, the way the good checkers do when bag persons go AWOL. Not this time. Too much to ask. So we dive into that giant produce pile and get it sorted. But I'm left wondering: Is Safeway a Grocery Outlet now? I thought the markup included some assistance? Does nobody recall the days when managers would appear and ask you how things were going? When the bag people offered to carry your stuff out? When it was all about the customer? Okay, neither do I, but my point stands. So we're in shock and the room has gone sort of blurry and camera-shaky. We realize the manager has been watching all of this without making any sort of move of assistance or apology. We didn't catch her name but she's a dark haired woman behind that little counter (used to be where you get cigarettes and change). My husband complains eloquently, describing the situation succinctly yet in detail. She just stares at him and says, "I'll talk to him." She might have apologized for the fact that during our long wordless transaction with Mahki he never even looked up or said, "Sorry about that," or lifted a finger to help us bag our stuff when Rolf took off. She obviously doesn't care. Everyone's a zombie in this place. Except Rolf. Rolf is kind of fun, and he has a funny hat. But don't get invested. Rolf doesn't stick around. We'll be going to the QFC on Mercer from now on. The last time we were there we had an excellent checker who was fast, cheerful and focused, and spent some extra time getting the coke boxes situated securely in our cart. Just a perfect experience. No reason to pay Safeway prices for a Grocery Outlet experience. Avoid the one at 516 1st Avenue West at all costs. Oh -- and something has been leaking into the garage for weeks now, creating this giant foul-smelling lake to one side of the garage, where you can't park. I like that this Safeway has free garage parking in a convenient location and that the employees are pretty friendly, especially the ladies in the flower department who I sometimes ask to wrap flowers. What I don't like is that sometimes the area outside has people asking for money as you enter or leave which can be a bit uncomfortable and that I can't reach the bags in the produce department. read more

I'll be honest I stopped at this Safeway to use the wifi at Starbucks because I don't have a data plan I can use in the States since my phone is a company phone and I don't want to turn on the roaming data. Well I wanted to buy some drinks so it worked out that we were already there. This store though seems like a much smaller grocery store than most because it just doesn't have the same depth as most. It's basically the smallest big chain grocery store I've even been in but being in the city it's sort of understandable. Either way we got what we came for and there was parking available on the street at the time I didn't feel like going to the garage. Don't forget your club card at home. I would rather walk a mile up a steep hill carrying 30 bags of groceries during a pandemic than shop at this Safeway. 1) I've seen two fights between homeless people in the store. 2) Deli Counter- they always pretend I'm not at the counter when I stand there. The employees always pretend to wrap, cut or get something in the back rather than help me. I will stare at their back for ten minutes and then walk away. 3.) Hot Meals- the man at the hot meal counter always messes up my order. I ask for two chicken breast and he says Chicken? Then rolls his eyes.. why?? I'm not sure why they obviously have chicken...but it's happened three times now. I can't handle it so I don't get chicken. 4) I have asked a sales associate a couple times for different products and the general response is 'Sorry that's seasonal or I've never hear of that' ... apparently Parmesan cheese is seasonal and frozen veggie steamers are unheard of. I called and complained once and the manager said 'you know we have cameras so if your lying I will know.' I said to check the tape and I will wait...
