I want to like this store. It's big and looks fairly new. It's clean and well lit, but suffers two really frustrating deficiencies: 1) For as much shelf space they have, there's a surprisingly limited amount of variety in each category of products. Disappointing, really. 2) Far and away the biggest problem is that checkout is always a painfully slow process... always. Never enough checkers and the ones working are always pretty slow. This is the worst Safeway and grocery store in the area, and I use that term lightly. I am not sure if they are understaffed or what, but I came in for say, the third time within the past month or so and each time the wait in lines were horrible, and all the machines are broken. The service is terrible too. The third time I came, I waited at least half an hr in line at the customer service counter to get a money exchange, only to get treated horribly and informed about a policy that does not exist to my knowledge, in other places, and not get served. A waste of time is an understatement. In addition, hours are less at this Safeway than the other ones nearby. In short, don't come here. If you want a throbbing headache, and poor service, then absolutely come. They have without a doubt lost a customer with me. Never coming back, ever again. read more

I hate when I'm out and about, running errands, and all of a sudden I have to pee. Well, who am I kidding, "all of a sudden"... I guzzle coffee. Coffee makes you have to pee. I bring it on myself, let's be honest. What I hate, is when I happen to be at this particular shopping center, and I have to pee. I'm here often; this Safeway has a * Chase Bank (both my personal and business bank), * a Starbucks (I don't care what you say coffee snobs, I'll drink Starbucks happily), * a Taco Bell (best fast food on the planet), * a Ross (yay for cheap clothes!), * a RadioShack (I bust or lose my ear-buds regularly), * a DOL (where the people are actually friendly and the lines aren't ridiculous!!!), * and a Little Caesars Pizza. Ok, I don't ever go to the pizza spot considering there are three botique pizza joints walking distance from my house, but who doesn't love yelling CAESAR CAESAR in a loud annoying voice while driving by? And I'm not a huge fan of Safeway. Their selection of organics is pretty dismal, and I put food into my body to fuel it. The quality of the food I eat is directly related to my health and longevity. I don't really want to be eating wax covered fruits and vegetables, or meats from mass-production meat farms. And their bathrooms. DEAR GOD when I absolutely must relieve myself, I am always tempted to buy a pack of mini-marshmallows to stuff in my nose. read more

I haaaaaaaate Safeway in general but I like this location and I'll tell you why. First, there is a Chase bank inside and they are relatively quick in service. Second, this store is HUGE. It's "OMG, Becky look at her butt" BIG. Third, they have a really stellar floral department! Seriously, they had the cutest succulents in planters for a club price of $4.99! Fourth, they have a pharmacy. Not that I use it because we all know I don't have health insurance but they have one and that's convenient! I do use their blood pressure machine on occasion just to monitor. Fifth, they have self-checkout, which means I don't get to complain about how badly they bag groceries, which is my biggest pet peeve about Safeway in general. When I do it myself, I can't really complain. And finally, this is the friendliest Safeway I've ever been to. I lost track of how many people (patrons!) said hello to me, which is refreshing in this frozen city. Overall, it's my favorite bad grocery store. read more

Worst Safeway I have ever been to!! We recently moved to the area and have to run there at all times of the day. There are always lines that are way too long than they should be as the cashiers are very slow. I have been there where the cashier was on her cell phone text messaging! They need better management there! We were there tonight to grab a cold drink on the way home and check out took forever because the person in front of us decided that he didn't want something. It took over 5 mins for the person with the over ride password to get there! And then the cashier ran out of $1's, called for the manager, only to have the her say in front of the now 8 people deep line that she couldn't help. WTF! So in Seattle, people seem to have an aversion to shopping at Safeway, i guess it's not cool to say that you don't shop anywhere else besides Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, or at the Farmer's Market. One person even told me that the "Safeway Smell" keeps her away. Really? Anyway, I think Safeway is a great place to buy your day to day goods - milk, eggs, meat, juices, etc... The prices are a lot better than comparable places like QFC on similar items. Also, there is a diverse selection of goods here; I can pick up some horchata and get some chutney at the same time on one grocery stop. Overall, I think Safeway undeservedly gets a bad rap in what's becoming a more and more uppity elitist Seattle. hah. Elite. read more

This is a solid Safeway location! The selection is good--you can find quality produce most of the time, and the organic produce is well priced and usually on sale. There is also a huge personal health/hygiene/cosmetics section with tons of sales...better priced than even Target sometimes. What I love the most is the Just for U savings that I get through the app! I load all my coupons, and I have saved anywhere from 20%-100%. Yes, that is true! With the combination of store sales and Just for U savings as well as any manufacturer coupons that come with my receipts, I barely shop anywhere else now for American groceries (except when I feel bougie, then I will head to PCC). I experience good customer service 99% of the time; the cashiers are usually super friendly and helpful. Returns have been easy and quick as well. There are about 6 self checkout spots, which I appreciate on those busy evenings. The main con is the location of course. It is right on Rainier Ave near 20 pot shops so you might get a contact high--well, that might be a pro for some of you. read more

The store itself is fine. But the manager there is rude and does not want to listen to what the customer has to say. I was helping my mom grocery shop around 8pm today (6/18) and she uses her humana food card at self check out which works all the time. But we were having trouble and the cashier that was managing the self checkout was patient and kind with us. As she was unsure of our problem she called over a manager and I tried to explain to him what I told her, but all he said was "It doesn't work like that" multiple times and cut me off. He did not let me explain the situation and did not let me show him the issue at all. Then after repeating his sentence and saying it in a condescending manner he walked away not helping us one bit. He needs to be more patient and actually listen to customers instead of disrespecting and disregarding them like that. I am furious at this customer service. How do you expect to help customer and solve problems when you don't let them explain and disregard them?? read more

Only issue. The scooters for the disabled & the management who seem to do little about that. I came in today my elderly Mother who is on portable oxygen, can't walk, is 81 needed a scooter to go to Chase inside the store. It was hot today. I noticed a woman sitting in the scooter she was by the lotto counter & she didn't budge. I noticed right next to her & the scooter she did have a walker probably hers. So why just sit stationary in the scooter not doing any shopping? I approached one of the employee's asking about a scooter when she looked scared that I asked her. She simply pointed over to the woman sitting in the scooter over by the lotto counter and said nothing. I asked the employee about a 2nd scooter there are supposed to be 2. She replied that the other one was stolen. So were was security? When I went inside the store to get a business card from the Chase bank the same lady who just sat in the store scooter was now outside the store with her walker. But no scooter anywhere anywere in sight. I used to be able to get a scooter for my elderly Mother. What happened to the scooters? Oh well I'll probably find them on e-bay for sale. read more

Ok. I have no "love" for the safeway chain. My parents totally avoided the dinky one in the town I grew up. The prices were too high and the produce sucked. But, "my" current safeway which is this one is pretty interesting. It is very diverse and you can get ingredients for just about any cuisine type. There is a whole wall of mexican cheeses! There is Kosher food. There is several varieties of asian food. Plus you can get all those weird things like pork hocks and other strange cuts of meats. (Ok, the "regular" meat department isn't the best and I've purchased meat there that was "bad" so ya gotta be careful with that.) The produce department is decent and again, there are some unusual choices. This safeway is NOT fancy and there is always a security gaurd posted. The lines to wait can sometimes be way too long. But, it gets high marks for the level of diverse foods they carry plus a pretty darn good produce department. read more

If this store was closer to me, I'd use it as my primary grocery store. I feel like I could get lost in the place ("hello...hello...hello" hear the echo?). Because it's not in downtown Seattle, I'm guessing they can afford to take up so much real estate. It's not so much that this Safeway has better food, so many more choices, or is the cleanest around. The reason I like this Safeway is because of the ethnic diversity there. Sure, it's because it's located in the Rainier Valley-I love it! I visit this store pretty frequently since it is an easy stop for me on the way home (and even within walking distance, when I am feeling so inspired and don't have too much to buy). I have to admit that, in the first 15 or so years I lived in Seattle, I was never much of Safeway girl. This was in part because the first few weeks I lived here, the Safeway workers went on strike and so I got into the habit of going to the QFC across the street (this was on Capitol Hill) so to avoid crossing the picket line. When the strike was over, I just stayed in the habit of going to the QFC. That continued even when I first moved to South Seattle. Eventually, though, I just became disenchanted with QFC and started to find myself going to Safeway more and more. The selection here is surprisingly decent. (I have found a better selection if "natural" foods here than I can find at the Lower Queen Anne store.) Prices are generally decent. The staff is friendly. And, I am thrilled that they have recently introduced self checkout machines at this store. I'm glad this is my neighborhood grocery store. It may just be a Safeway, but it's MY Safeway. read more

I've lived in the area for 2 years and each experience I have is worse than the last when I shop at this Safeway! The deli employees could care less about quick and proper customer service. The meat/seafood counter employees are even worse and hardly ever around. The lines for the checkout are beyond ridiculous! Every time I try to use the self checkout, I end up needing someone to come check my bags and wait on average of 5 min for assistance. One time I waited so long that my time ran out and my order was cancelled and I had to start over again! I have been going to the QFC more regularly and after giving one last chance to Safeway today, it was the worst experience yet!! This store really needs to get it together! read more

This Safeway makes me sad. And confused. And angry. If you want something that's not an everyday, generic brand staple item, they'll probably be out of it. This place is a dogsh*t sandwich. They were supposed to deliver my groceries the day before Thanksgiving. They called me at the end of the delivery window and claimed their computers were all down and they had to cancel the delivery. However, they wouldnt' cancel the delivery for me, so I had to call corporate and wait on the phone for *more than 2 hours* to get a refund. Some other fun points: * Their front door has been broken ever since I started shopping here 3 years ago. * The lines and crowds are insane. They never have enough people on staff, and half of the ones that do work there are completely incompetent. * Their store is dirtier than it should be * There are crackheads all over. The world's first Super Safeway from back in the 90's. Luckily the place has undergone another remodel in recent years because it was really starting to look shabby. This is my neighborhood grocery store and I love it. Huge and expansive, you can't beat Safeway for overall value. You gotta admit, safeway produce is waaaay better than it was 5 years ago. Hands down the most frustrating and disappointing shopping experience every.... single... time. Three times I have walked out and left my shopping behind. Today I got raw chicken drizzled all over my hand. All hand sanitizer stations were empty and not a single employee could help me. Lines are too long, cashier have no sense of urgency, and nobody knows where anything is. I will drive twice as far and spend twice as much at PCC just to avoid the enraged feeling they leave me with every time I am stupid enough to go in there. read more

Chronically understaffed, cluttered, and not very clean. Be ready to wait in line if you have a life because I can't shop at 7 am or 9 pm. The long-term staff are very good but the rest walk around aimlessly. I worked many years in management for a non-discount big box retailer and I would have been fired if my store looked like this and employees were so blasé. There have been cobwebs on the lights above the self-checkout for weeks. The self-check itself is a joke. It's poorly laid out with the scanners back to back so that when there's a line, it's hard to see when one is open and others can walk right up and take one. Most of the time there is nobody manning the area because they are doing other things or trying to manage the other cashiers who seem clueless. More than once, I've waited 10-15 minutes with the red light flashing because it couldn't sense my canvas bags. That's a regular occurrence. I used to train cashiers. I'm fast at the register, but I always end up waiting. The "freshly baked bread" is absolutely dreadful. It's all just soft white bread. I bought focaccia the other day and tossed it after trying one piece. I used the restroom once. Never again. It was filthy. Truck stops are cleaner. I was gagging and used the cart wipes after I left. The front entrance is also dirty and it smells around the shopping carts. The store is HUGE. But the selection is comparatively terrible. I went three times over a month to buy marscapone and they finally got some in. I bought limes for a taco party last winter and when I got them home, realized they were are rock hard and had no juice. A friend who works in high-end restaurants said it's likely the limes had frozen at some point. The final straw was yesterday. I've attempted to purchase a bottle of vodka on two previous occasions in the last week. Once I waited at the cabinets and no one came. The next time I waited in the customer service counter line and they started helping people from both ends, leaving me standing there. I tried one last time yesterday. I pressed the 'help' button at the cabinets. The new guy from self-check came over and told me I had to go wait in the self-check line first. I explained that I would check out there. He wouldn't budge. In the time it took to come over and refuse to help, he could have gotten my bottle and had it ready for me when I reached the register. So he wanted me to wait in line then hold up everyone else while he and I walked back to the liquor cabinets to get what I needed. Pretty stupid system if you ask me. The only reason I go here is that it's a 7 minute walk or 3 minute drive. From now on, I'll drive to QFC. Yes, there's a bank and a Starbucks. That's all this place has going for it. Obviously this dump rakes in the profits which is why the corporation overlooks the many shortcomings. 10/7/15 I made the mistake of going back because I just needed a few things as I was in a hurry. Because I had a gift card, I used the checkout instead of the self-check. I don't notice at first it was the same person who 'helped' me with the alcohol non-purchase previously. I've never seen anyone so slow at the register. It took 20 minutes and I was third in line. I don't know what transactions were happening but when people handed him cash, he didn't know how to count money without spreading it out on the check stand. He mangled my gift card when he tried to validate it. Twice he handed me the card and greeting card which I handed back. I don't want to carry them in the rain! He struggled bagging and I finally just put the cards in the bag, reached over and grabbed it. After I left I realized he never gave me my receipts. It's my own fault for going back. I'm sure he's a nice guy but he shouldn't be dealing with customers and he sure as hell shouldn't be on the register. Let him run a department and stock shelves. read more

This place is so poorly managed. I'm writing this review while standing in an express checkout line that looks like it will take me at least twenty minutes to overcome. This is not an uncommon occurrence, hence why I try to only shop here in the middle of the night. If you are not a vampire or are busy, I would recommend another location if possible. At the moment there are 3/7 checkout lines that are unmanned, which is usually the obvious reason for the disastrous traffic jam that forms in the front of this store between the hours of noon and 9pm. The staff are all actually pretty nice but they are definitely getting set up for failure by the people up top. TLDR: horrendously understaffed at all hours of the day. Bring reading material unless you enjoy side eying tabloids for thirty minutes. read more

Pharmacist forged my signature to steal $1,200 worth of insulin - store circled the wagons to protect the thief. I bought a phone card. Scratched off the silver stuff; no numbers underneath. Card says clearly that if there's a problem with the card the vendor (in this case, Safeway) must refund. They refused. Store always smells of rotted meat & the service is the worst. Had to get a lawyer because they refused to honor state issued checks despite sign saying they do. Criminal at every opportunity. read more

This morning at rainier Safeway gas station my credit card got stuck in the reader and would not come out. I asked for help from the gas station attendant who would not help and walked away after making threatening comments while cursing at me for asking for his help. He said :" he was not going to be rushed, cursed me and called me stupid repeatedly I. The lot while other customers were watching in disbelief. This was a 350 lb black male and I'm an immigrant who simply asked if he can help me get the credit card that was stuck. He finally asked over without a mask and verbally assaulted me in front of my child also, who was terrified. This person should not be working at the station and is a threat to the rainier community where I live and raise my children for over 25 years. Nobody should be afraid to go to the gas station at Safeway period. read more

Check out process is terrible, that's been my only interaction with crummy machines and the clearly overwhelmed staff. It's a huge store with good selection, though, so worth a visit. I prefer the smaller QFC a mile or two north on Rainier, but when I need bigger selection on the shelves, I'll make the occasional trip to this Safeway and it does the job. I've got a friend who is able to walk to this Safeway from her home in cat hair pants. So that's convenient. But the store closes at 1 am. So if you're looking to do any post-midnight boozing, you're gonna end up standing outside wondering how it is that you're locked out of a safeway in the middle of the night. Don't let that happen. This is the worst grocery store ever. I couldn't find many pieces of produce on my list and the stuff I did find was old and poor quality. I stopped by the deli before heading to the checkout, that was a mistake. I ordered a Signature Sandwich-turkey, pesto, and avocado. The person making my sandwich asked me what I wanted on it and when I said pesto, she didn't seem to know what that was. I had to say it several times. I also picked up some pre-made sushi and made sure to check the expiration date, it was fine. The rice was dry and tasted like sawdust. Finally, I arrived at the checkout and there were 10 people in one line because the only other lanes open were self check out. This store really, really sucks and I will not be back. read more

The guy that works in the deli kept looking over at me but was to busy stocking hot snacks area to help, the lady behind the counter stayed in back doing prep to put out, she also kept looking but never said anything. So I gave up and started to walk off, one of there bakery staff walked over to buy something and the lady in back ran our to help her. We are moving our shopping to the Red Apple on Beacon Hill. They actually care about there customers. This has happened a few times at this location, the managers are useless, they change faster than the weather. If you need a Safeway, use the one in Weat Seattle. read more

One of my favorite grocery stores. There are many around so you never have to drive too far. Weekly ads in mailer and newspaper make it easy to find deals/coupons on items. Their meats and fish are pretty fresh. Deli has good selction of food and they keep it hot. Staff is always helpful and friendly. Items are easy to find with all the aisles marked clearly. Make sure you sign up for a membership card to get the best prices. Some locations also have gas for affordable prices which you can also get a member discount on! read more

I've been using them for months thru order-online but today might be the end of that. My order was supposed to be ready at 3pm. Went in to get turkey holiday dinner box since I was down here and none checked the freezer just ignored me. I had to call a manager from my cell while at the deli. I'd give negative stars purely on the lack of hustle there is at the register. This is not an exaggeration one bit I was in line one for 45 min. First the gentlemen a person in front of me didn't know what to do with his coin voucher and neither did the cashier ok what ever lets move on. The women In front of me dropped her dollar and instead of just handing her another dollar and get the line flowing they both stood there using a paper-bag to go fishing for the dollar that fell behind the ATM slider thing. After being in the line already for 35 min it's my turn and let me tell you she couldn't of gone at anymore of a glacier pace. I was bagging my own groceries faster than she was putting them out. This is the "Rainier Valley Safeway" that is in charge of Seattle area web deliveries. I ordinarily wouldn't go out of my way to rate a friggen Safeway, but in the middle of all the summer smoke, we tried out the delivery service on a Thursday. People in our home were feeling bad and needed some relief. They had no available spots until 8pm Friday - ok. Then we were called at 7pm Friday and told they would be "very late" - ok. At 10pm we were called and told the truck had broken down and we would not receive our delivery - bummed, but we survived. By Sunday I had left messages and emails through the app every which way but had not been contacted. Our visa had been charged! I called 5 Seattle Safeways on Sunday morning until I was routed to the right one for deliveries, and once I was finally there, they told me "all the staff for deliveries took their break at the same time, even the person who's supposed to be on the phones." I asked a manager to take down our order number and make sure our charge was reversed. Later that day (I work Sundays at a hospital) I was called by the Rainier Valley Safeway delivery service to tell me I'd better be ready because they were door dashing our delivery that hour. I called back when I was at my desk again -- hours later, and talked to "John" who didn't identify himself, just yelled weird things like "who are you? What! You'd better be ready!" and was the least professional most arrogant person with the fewest personal coping skills I have ever spoken with. I tried to explain what happened, and he never stopped YELLING AT ME that there was nothing he could do, and it wasn't his fault that the computer decided to send the groceries when it did (I didn't say that it was, I just couldn't accept the groceries). I told him I couldn't be there to receive groceries and he accused me of blaming him. He even said i had already received the groceries and I "have nothing to complain about" (although I had asked someone at home and they said nothing came). He spoke down to me and was basically just a horrible unkind human. I hope this deters you from ever using this service. Safeway doesn't give one kernel for you, and apparently treats their staff so badly they fall apart at the drop of a hat. Plus, I still don't have a refund! read more

This Safeway is better than the QFC north on Rainier, but it's still a Safeway. There's a decent selection of organic items -- and the produce area is quite large. There's a small section off of the produce area for vegetarian/ vegan items, but after a trek to find Seitan last night, I realized Safeway has a *small* selection of these items (including *no* seitan). The olive bar at Safeway is nice, and again, it's definitely much nicer than the QFC, but I'd love it more if it was even more veggie friendly. Veggie salad bar? Seitan?! read more

Honestly I've been coming here for years! Best times to go to this safeway location is early mornings before 7AM or after 7PM. Anywhere between then you will run into lines. Holidsy shopping is a nightmare so don't procrastinate and then complain! Tsk tsk do your shopping early on holidays you won't be sorry. I've waited 1 hour in line before it was before Christmas eve! Save yourself and do it early. Lots of selection of produce especially with organic pesticide free produce, lots of gluten free options, & ethnic cultured foods. They have a bakery, pharmacy deli and flower & balloon stand. Located inside are a convenient Starbucks shop & Chase Bank. Don't forget to use your safeway card and rewards for coupons. Next door is Ross dress for less store. Parking is challenging if you go during peak hours so go after the rush hour and busy times! read more
