Every year I order a cake from Safeway for kids birthday and they always turn out amazing! Whenever I tell our party guests I bought it at Safeway everyone is like "what!!!" I've had so many bad experiences at this store been meaning to write. The store is abysmally run and organized. It is a GIVEN that I will not get through the check-out process without needing some sort of store intervention. Knowing that, I go to self-checkout because I do not want to be haggling around with a cashier annoying other customers despite my preference for engaging with a human being. So I just get annoyed myself. 90% of the time I am there I have to ask for help. I rarely have a lot of stuff too. Whether it's a falsely advertised item, an item that does not come through despite marking it on the App, an item that is a store sale that is not capable of being scanned without assistance, or one of the many wrinkles in having so many different wants to "discount" an item (just a member sale, App, coupon, who knows). Just today I noticed the price tags were different and the prices on so many items were jacked up beyond belief. This was never a great store compared to competitors with prices, but with the poor customer experience making things even pricier was laughable. I ended up at a different Safeway recently and was struck by how well it was run and smooth the experience was. So part of this is not a Safeway thing...but this particular store. We used to love coming to this store daily for our big family needs until recently when they fired or lost most of the employees and a manager that provided great service. Now it's just another boring store with bad service from both Starbucks, the service desk and most of the cashier's. It used to be easy to deal with a pricing issue, now you will be created with snarls and huffs and puffs. Forget it if your coupons don't work. Found everything in my list and shelves appeared pretty well stocked. So no issues there. Even got a few of my items on discount with the digital coupons so that's always a win!! Got in line with a real cashier and not forced to go through the self checkout which I avoid at all costs. I would rather wait a couple extra minutes for a cashier than go through self check out. This review is with regards to the bakery & ordering custom cookies/cakes. We ordered a cookie for my daughters birthday & Madison who took the order did a great job being very specific in the instructions. When we picked it up today it was not what we had ordered @ all except the writing. We'd asked to have the blue colors blended together w different sprinkles that Madison even attached to the order. It's like the decorator didn't even read the order instructions & did what they wanted instead. The edge was supposed to be the scalloped shell instead they did the dollops & there were spaces in between them Madison offered to re-do the cookie for us but we chose to take the one already made I'm mainly writing this review so people will be prepared for their cookie/cake to not turn out how they ordered it. The front end manager I always have to deal with is the worst in customer service. He was terrible as a cashier. Too busy with his appearance and co-workers to be professional, then and now. Zero help, zero eye contact, zero cares given. Acts as though helping a customer is beneath him, rough. I've left this store many times questioning myself when things go wrong.. but in the end, Safeway employees should be there to lend a helping hand, not look down their nose at customers. And, 9 out of 10 cashier kids are either too busy to help, on their phone, primping or flirting with each other. How does this store stay afloat.. Safeway is a store my wife have always prefer. Alway used Safeway when we lived in Surprise. And even though it's a little drive for us. We continued to shop at Safeway since we moved to Queen Creek. Now this store as most other Safeways, are basically the same. This location is continually servicing our needs. So why for low ratings? Pretty simple. Since grocery stores were titled as essential. I truly believed this location really felt they were above the covid protocols. Even though they had signs hanging on the doors. They never enforced the wearing mask to enter. Workers even talked to non-compliance customers and never asked then to mask up. I know everyone has their own opinion regarding covid. However all the small businesses had to comply with the rules or risked being shut down. Just not a good look for this location. read more

This the closest store to us, yet we still drive out to Fry's in Gilbert. Why? Well this place is XXXX. From time to time we would pop in to get an item or two and sometimes a full shopping trip, but with this last FULL shopping visit, we are done! Selection: I give them props of having some traditional Chicago items that we have a hard time finding in the area. For example: Giardinera, they have it (Well now we will just get it at Portillo's in QC), Home Run Inn pizza is another. The meat department is a bit bare and the store itself is all smaller and seemingly less selection than the larger stores in the area. Pricing: Its a hit or miss, but with limited stock, some seem to be a good value and others are not. Service: This is where we draw the line. On our visit, which we spent $150+, we bought soda on the promo. Only to find out when we got back home that the limit was 1 promo (bottles, which were pictured on the ad and cans, which were not). So we were charged full price for the bottles. Would have been nice for the cashier to tell us that, but nope. So I took the receipt back to the store, at which point the limit was pointed out to me. I acknowledged that I should have paid close attention to the fine print; but the register discounted the cans, not the bottles. So I got the smallest discount possible and paid the highest full price as part of the transaction. Mgr just shrugged her shoulders. I said fine, I'll just come back and return the bottles. Came back next day, bottles in hand and saw a different mgr. Told her the issue and she seemed to not care either. Ok, NP. Got my refund and left. Not to mention that the Customer Service area is never staffed, as they float to help registers, etc. So both times I had to wait for them to come over, with no apology for making me wait. Again this was not a $ issue, but one of principle. When you are in a competitive environment, selling commodity goods: you win on customer service. In this case, you lost! Pros and cons : Pros: prices were decent and the store was clean. Folks were helpful. Cons: what should have taken me less then 20min total, took me more like 35 minutes because I was walking all over the place looking for what I needed to get. Seems like an odd layout for some of the stuff, like the eggs don't even have a label on the aisle, I must have passed it 3 times. The dairy stuff is all over the place. Beautiful Store (Ocotillo & Ironwood), well stocked, clean and clerks are customer orientated. In short, customer service appears to be a priority. That is the best it gets. 8 weeks in a row when I have checked out I have had to look at my receipt to discover I was overcharged to the tune off 10.00 or more to a high of 20.00 plus dollars. Since I use my debit card, the customer service person can only refund cash. Not what I want!!! I just want to be charged for what I bought or for what was advertised in their weekly ad that I purchased. Shopping at grocery stores today is no easy deal. Down load their app is the biggest push by most grocery chains. With the introduction of digital coupons, scanners and ever changing price changes it is no wonder things like this happen but not being responsive or not caring is a complete failure. A worker must key in price changes, digital items and coupon items. With scanners the consumer has developed a trustworthy faith in pricing. BEWARE of this store. I had the clerk check my phone and app and was told they did not know what the problem was and I had everything loaded properly. So I phone the customer service line to attempt to talk to the manager to voice my concerns as a shopper/consumer and the customer service person I talked to was polite, listened intently and was solution driven with the available tools at their disposal. End result: concern will be escalated and store manager will contact you.Never happened! That was a week ago. Lastly, 8 weeks in a row means many others are knowingly or unknowingly being over charged every time they shop at this grocery store. 8 weeks in a row is NOT a mistake. It is the norm. One can only conclude the store manager is incompetent, under qualified and definitely not being a good representation of the core values of this grocery store chain. I found the store very clean and tidy!! Had a great selection of items. The store was well marked with signage and easy to navigate. Staff was excellent- including the sweet bakery lady. LOL Amazing baked fresh daily breads, danishes, donuts, pastries and pies! They store is well stocked. Lots of options for all foods fresh, frozen, boxed, etc. good beer and wine choices too! There are lots of speciality foods. The deli has a great assortment of pre-made dishes and deli meats. I can see how this store got low stars. We went to customer service to ask about a charge for a rib roast we purchased. We were supposed to spend a minimum of $25 before we could get the $4.97/lb special. Our mistake and we were cool about that...we were more than happy to pick up a few more items to fulfill that bargain but the issue was with the not so gentleman person that spoke to us. Our non confrontational approach was met with incredible arrogance. It took us by shock. The man spoke down at us and treated like we were stupid. He never offered a friendly way to help us get the special deal. He wanted us to know that we didn't understand the ad. His coworker stepped in to say that we can go back and shop for $25 worth of groceries. We thanked her gratefully for her assistance. I don't know why we were met with such disservice. The man had a lot of jewelry but the one that baffled me the most was the 2 inch wide silver and gold pendant of "The Last Supper" around his neck. For someone with a horrible, low customer attitude to display such a showy religious image, he was not an ideal human to be representing that. What a nightmare this store is!! I was sent here to fulfill a DoorDash order and did a little shopping for myself as well. Stood in the meat/fish section for quite some time before I saw someone. First asked if he was still open and he said " well, I was just about to close up. Why what do you need?" Seemed irritated with me. Asked for some fish. Fish had so many bones in it I can't even eat it (see pic) Went to the deli, asked for some roast beef that was rare and not too salty. The lady just stared at me for several seconds and then says " well, you have two options". Seemed very irritated with me. Then the checkout situation was a disaster. Only one cashier (have to use cashier for DoorDash). Jake was his name. And I've never seen someone move so slow in my life. He wasn't bagging the groceries as he scanned them either. Also had told him I had two orders, even put the divider down. He still rang them up together. Oh and another lady came in behind me before I started checking out. She had found another employee and asked him if he could help her out with her DoorDash order. He says yeah sure no problem and takes her over at self check out. I said hey wait a minute I have a DoorDash order too. I didn't know we could do that to which she said oh, you just have to ask and he went ahead and took her and gave her separate assistance. I don't know maybe there's something about me that the people that work in the store took a look at me and decided they didn't like me and were going to make my experience terrible? I don't know, but I will literally never step foot in the store again. I used to be an employee here and the manager of the whole store made the environment toxic. She would be on her phone on the floor around customers. Also it seem to me that she mostly pick up a younger employees. She made us feel not really safe in her environment. She even asked me about my personal mental health which is against the ADA. Terrible service, terrible store managers, terrible employee attitude towards customers is usually the norm in this store. The deli staff is always slow and will gladly hand you a plastic bucket with more of the salad on the outside than inside and the lid not closed. Safeway has some of the highest prices of any store in town, and now expanded the self serve checkout. The idea of a self serve for a few items is great, but for normal shopping loads a traditional line is faster and at these "full service" prices is correct. Appearently the store now has a policy of NO cashiers after 8pm, no matter how busy the store is. Tonight, at 8:10PM, I got inline to wait behind about 10 others waiting for a completely packed self service corral. 15 too 20 minutes later I was finally next in line to enter the self serve coral. When Iooked behind me, there were atleast another 12 to 15 more people waiting. All the time, the store employees (two groups of 3 each) standing chatting and laughing with their hands in their pockets. When people standing in the long line started to ask the staff if they were going to open a cashier line, the reply was the store policy is no cashier lines after 8pm. So much for old Safeway slogan of "three's a crowd". Again, full service pricing, with zero service provided. Thankfully there is a Bashas and a Kroger/Fry's store about 3 miles farther away. I will continue to shop the other stores as much as possible. Sad store. Update: Well Dawn M., I did try https://www.safeway.com/contact-us.html via phone, all options appear to be focused upon if I had delivery issues. Nothing specific to say issue in a store. After 10 minutes battling with the Chat bot, I finally was in line for another 10 minutes waiting for a live agent. I finally had chat contact with Christian Eli. I shared that I posted this and told him you said to go to site to setup a way to be contacted. He wanted me to re-type what had been posted. Again I said you asked me to try to setup a contact. But would only say the information would be forwarded to the store. Nice gratuitous response to my first post, but obviously it appears you never actually expect someone to try to contact you when invited. Plus another 30 minutes of my time wasted. Hello, I was at the Queen Creek, AZ store location today, Sunday August 27, 2023 for our weekly grocery shopping like we do every week. Our family likes the location because we are right across the street. And we always see are friends and family at this location when we shop. And every week we get deli meat and see the same people. One being the young punk kid with a piss poor attitude. Even my wife hates talking to this kid and she'll talk to anyone. Most of people that shop at Safeway refuses to get anything from this kid. Well today while I was grocery shopping, I went to the deli to get meat and the only kid available was the kid with the piss poor attitude. I asked for turkey and salami sliced thin, which he didn't say anything and didn't even ask if that was okay or not. So, then after he grabbed whatever kind of meat without asking, I asked if that was thinly sliced after he cut it and replayed back "yes" every rudely. Which the meat was not and I told him that it was not so, he replayed back, "that this thinly sliced and can't get any thinner" with an attitude. I told him I come here all the time and other people can get it sliced thinner than that. He replayed with no you can't so, I gave him the meat back and he throw it on the back counter behind. That is when I asked for him to get the manager. Then this young punk stomped around the counter and raised his voice and said "let's go get him then," and stormed to the front of the store. Then I followed him while still grabbing things I need for the week. At this time, he didn't see me follow right behind him, because I don't have time for this young punk attitude and I still have a couple of more things to grab before checking out. So, he finally saw that I was not following him and then at this time he yelled "aren't you coming!" And that is when I started to get pissed! I told him "You're on my time and you can wait for me." That is when I went to checkout and talked to the manager. Which he was nice put did a piss poor job of handling this kid. Also, he handled this is a way like nothing happened. That kid should be fired or at list set home without pay for some time. This is the problem with this world all of this young punk kids get away with treating adults like crap. I treat everyone with respect until they start with crap like this. And for not slicing my meat the way I want it. It is not that hard to do your job. The intitled little punks need to be told when they are wrong and management needs to disciplined these kids. I know you are not their parent, which I think they need to discipline this punk too. I have never been so disrespected anywhere before in my life. I would hope this kid learns not to be a little punk and grows up. Lastly, my family will not be shopping at Safeway any more. I have had enough. Also, almost all of the boxes with small chip bags where opened and it looks like someone ate a couple of bags out of them. Terrible customer service!! Went shopping and tried to take advantage of the chicken sale. Apparently you needed a digital coupon. So stupid. My phone wouldn't load it. After many tries on the cashiers part we went to the customer service desk. The woman there was more concerned that I had 4 packs instead of the two limit. I explained to her 4 times my husband was getting 2! Trying to get this stupid coupon to work took so long and her great concern that I may buy more than the limit.
