Never Enough Checkers! Safeway NEVER has enough checkers. Even with 75 people standing in line at 10 AM they have 3 checkers working and 6 lanes idle! When I asked if they had more checkers, they said no - and then told me to go to the office to complain. This is no way to treat customers! I've seen this in other Safeway stores. I do not understand the mentality of the store manager. Perhaps he/she thinks all store customers are tourists and will never return. Unfortunately, this is the only grocery store in town for the residents of the area. They have to shop here frequently. We have family in Kings Beach so we are in this Safeway about once a month. There are three good employees. Thanks to them! The rest of these people have no interest in working or any interest in their customers. It takes forever to buy anything at the deli or bakery. We have to bag our own groceries. And two cash register clerks are rude and obnoxious. Parking is excellent. read more

Safeway in Kings Beach does not enforce wearing masks. Dozens of people walk in not wearing masks and they say nothing. We went in last weekend, and while most good citizens were wearing masks, many were not. One guy said to a Safeway employee "The fascists in Sacramento can't tell me what to do", and he did nothing. The guy coughed and laughed about it...still, they did nothing. It's not safe to go there. Stay away! read more

I love Safeway - they offer great produce and products, their employees are super helpful and friendly, and their prices are commensurate with other local grocery stores. I live in kings beach and understand it's hard to find help. So I'm not going to complain about the long slow lines. Some of the checkers are so rude and today was the last straw I forgot my bags and when I told the women she rolled her eyes and gave me dirty look then she proceeded to stuff the groceries in the bag cans on produce. I have been shopping at the Kings Beach Safeway for 40 yrs.!! It is the most ill-managed store I have ever been to. I shop there because I only live a mile away and it is on my way home from work. So, it should be convenient to run in and grab something. Not! Today, on a Monday, there were lines 12-15 people deep, only 2 cashiers open, no express lane open, and people shaking there heads everywhere saying "WTF"!! But, that is pretty much the norm for this store, any day, anytime. They recently installed self-checkout but, that seems to only have made thing worse. Those lines were a mile long as well. This safeway is horrible. It's embarrassing. As a local I'm trying to find something nice to say, but I can't. The checker with the bleach blonde long hair that is probably close to 50 years in age. I wish I could remember her name but I can't unfortunately. Her hair is curly and she has worked there for a long time. She is the worst ! She acts like she is doing you a favor just by ringing you up. You can tell that because she has been there so long she thinks she is entitled. Yea this place was awesome......we tried to hit up about 4 restaurants in Tahoe one evening, but since it was spring break, they were ALL packed. (as in "sorry, it's a hour wait") so we went to good ole Safeway to get food and drinks. they had everything we needed and wanted! And we didn't have to wait an hour to check out! LOL! Safeway's employees are just peaches. I left my wallet in the bathroom (I think). It had 2 major credit cards, my driver's license, countless business cards I'd be lost without, something like $40 in cash and more. When I called Safeway a day later, Rebecca said yes, she had it and it was in the safe. When I picked it up I asked if she knew who turned it in. She wasn't working at the time and said there was no note, so who knows? But imagine how hosed I'd have been had I not found it and imagine my relief that it was turned in. I said I'd love to have given someone a reward but Rebecca said employees are fired if they take a tip and we'll never know who turned the wallet in. My appreciation abounds for the person(s) unknown. And while I'm at it, the jalapeno cheese focaccia in the bakery is the ideal ski lunch. 230 calories, 79 cents each, superb flavor and it travels in a pocket well. There is an old lady in the DELI that is really rude. I asked her if she could remove some mustard from my sandwich because she added too much. She got mad because I asked her to remove some. Well she did remove it but with all the mayo included. I asked if she can add more mayo because she removed all of it. She added extra extra mayo. Not cool lady!! Weird! We used this Safeway in the winter and it was great! But we came on a Friday evening at 8:30 and they already had all of their pallets out to restock. It made it very difficult to walk the aisles. You'd think that a Safeway that was open 24 hours would be able to do that at 1:00am or later. They have a big sign posted that they will open a new register when there is 3 or more in the line and the lines that were open stretched down the aisles 8 to 10 deep. It was obvious that they don't continually restock throughout the day. Their produce area was empty in many areas. We found what we needed but what should have been a 20-30 minute grocery trip lasted easily 60-90 minutes just trying to navigate the aisles. read more

This Safeway is so disappointing. I used to work at Safeway and the way they run things at this Safeway is completely different than the way Safeway is supposed to be. People here are NOT personable at ALL. Th employees are grumpy, ignore customers and don't seem to care at all. I was in the dairy section and an employee was walking by and a customer had said "Excuse me can you help me with something" and she completely ignored him and kept walking. I looked at him and said "wow that was rude". In each department I walked through, not one employee I saw greeted any customers or asked how they were doing or asked if they needed help with anything. I worked in the bakery at Safeway in Central Cali and we were told to greet all customers with a smile, ask how their day is and if they needed help finding anything to let us know. Not one employee here did that. When I went to checkout, they do not have self checkout. They had 1-15 or less open which there was about 8 people in line and 6 people in each of the 2 regular lines open. Normal Safeway stores open up more lane when there is that many people in the lines. When it was our turn. I thought that it was very odd that they do not bag your items, they just move your stuff pushing it to the end of the area and then move onto the next person. Um hello, can we say rude? As I am bagging my stuff the next customers crap is shoved towards me. Gosh at least wait until I have my stuff if your not going to bag my stuff which is your job, not mine. Ordered a cake for a birthday over phone to be picked up today. When I went to pick it up they did not even have my cake or the order. Since I had to have a cake for a party for tonight I picked out something sitting out and asked if I could at least have something written on it and a pink flower like I ordered. Update: still sucks As someone who frequents this store out of convenience they should change their 3's a crowd slogan to Bakers Dozen's a crowd. Customer Service: horrible, horrible, horrible, non existent, and sucks. I HAVE NEVER SPENT LESS TIME IN LINE THAN I HAVE SHOPPING. 5 minute shopping=equals 15 minute wait. Incompetent management and no this is not during peak season. Employees: Friendly but only to compensate for the horrible experience. Deli: could not hire people who move any slower. They have a nice sandwich bar which does orders to go. If you have 30 minutes. Just go up the street to subway. Meat Department: Great Produce Department: great but way, and I mean way overpriced. Go to Raleys in Incline Village. Bakery Department: Great Starbucks: their employees could never handle the tempo in a real Starbucks and their Barista skills suck and they may very well be the slowest place in the whole store. Maybe if the Baristas would shut their mouths with the nonstop banter between employees it they might find a whole new level of efficiency. For this location - not the one in my neighborhood. Wish the Safeway in my neighborhood was as nice as this one. I'm sure I spent more money than I would have just because everything looks so nice at this Safeway. Found everything we needed for our winter vacation - hot chocolate, duraflame logs, wine, frozen pizzas, etc. I want to take all the nice people who work here home with me - just for one week - to show the unfriendly folks at my Safeway that it doesn't require that much of an effort to do your job with a smile. They also have the funnest parking lot, I discovered today. We pulled in next to the bread delivery truck and since I was shopping with my truck-obsessed toddler, we went over to see what was involved with delivering bread to the grocery store. The driver was this totally friendly guy and he gave us a sample of cinnamon raisin bread. How old-fashioned is that? After wards we got the plastic toboggan out of the back of the car and I pulled him around the snowy parking lot - my son, not the bread delivery guy. Then we went in to their Starbucks kiosk and got some hot chocolate. On the way out, my little guy noticed a Hot Wheels monster truck that he had to have, so I obliged. I think we had more fun at Safeway today than my husband and 8-year-old had at Northstar and we spent about 1/10th of what they did. read more

I appreciate Safeway due to their selection, long hours, and increasing selection of organic products but that's where it ends. Safeway inflates their prices at their Tahoe stores since tourists have no other options, but leaves locals paying exorbitant prices to shop at the only full service grocery store in town. I've heard enough testimonies from current and past employees to confidently state that they treat their staff poorly, while raking in major profits from their "resort" stores. Sure, they offer jobs when no one else is hiring, but that is because they don't treat their employees well enough to stay. They know that there will always be someone else hungry, looking for a job, willing to compromise themselves for a month or two to pay the bills. Please support locally owned businesses who don't send their profits away to share holders. read more

We stayed at the Northstar Resort and didn't plan to have such a luxurious kitchen! Lucky for us, Safeway was only about a 15 minute drive down the highway. It's fairly pricey, but considering it's a Safeway in Tahoe, that's to be expected. If you shop smart, though, it's not too bad. They have almost anything you could need. read more

Tourists beware. Multiple employees overheard expressing relief all the tourists are gone. Makes it a little awkward when you are in their store and are in fact, a tourist. We, too, live in a city/county who's economy relies heavily on tourism and understand it's frustrating when your population doubles overnight, but it's not like it's a surprise. You know it's going to happen, so you deal with it and move on. My suggestion would be if you don't like working in a job where you are dealing with people, well... don't work somewhere where you are dealing with people. We have used this store for a number of years when we come up here and probably will continue too because of the convenience, but will probably feel uncomfortable in the store. read more

The worst experience I have ever had. my wife is from Spain and she was trying to Oder a sandwich from CLAUDIA and my wife's English is not that good but she was trying she ask CLAUDIA if she spoke Spanish and her answer was NO so we understood a lot of people look Hispanic and don't speak spanish, as we where living we heard CLAUDIA talk to a co-worker in Spanish and that made me really mad because my wife it's only been in the country for 1 year and she is trying her best. The Safeway store has gone downhill the last few years. We have shopped here for 30 years and have had OK results until recently. They have cut back tremendously and have nobody to bag your groceries. This is a really nice Safeway as far as a grocery store goes. It has a great selection of just about everything. I was just staying in town for the week but I was able to go in and buy one of their pre-made Jambalayas and added some shrimp, crab legs and hotlinks and I found everything plus a good wine there. read more
